Robinson is credited as an early practitioner of the mixed herbaceous border of hardy perennial plants, a champion too of the "wild garden", who vanquished the high Victorian pattern garden of planted-out bedding schemes. Robinson's new approach to gardening gained popularity through his magazines and several books-particularly The Wild Garden, illustrated by Alfred Parsons, and The English Flower Garden. Robinson advocated more natural and less formal-looking plantings of hardy perennials, shrubs, and climbers, and reacted against the High Victorian patterned gardening, which used tropical materials grown in greenhouses. He railed against standard roses, statuary, sham Italian gardens, and other artifices common in gardening at the time. Modern gardening practices first introduced by Robinson include: using alpine plants in rock gardens; dense plantings of perennials and groundcovers that expose no bare soil; use of hardy perennials and native plants; and large plantings of perennials in natural-looking drifts. In 1866, at the age of 29, he became a fellow of the Linnean Society under the sponsorship of Charles Darwin, James Veitch, David Moore, and seven other distinguished botanists and horticulturists. Two months later, he left Regents Park to write for The Gardener's Chronicle and The Times, and represented the leading horticultural firm of Veitch at the 1867 Paris Exhibition. He began writing many of his publications, beginning with Gleanings from French Gardens in 1868, The Parks, Gardens, and Promenades of Paris in 1869, and Alpine Flowers for Gardens and The Wild Garden in 1870. Jekyll wrote about Robinson that: "...when English gardening was mostly represented by the innate futilities of the "bedding" system, with its wearisome repetitions and garish colouring, Mr William Robinson chose as his work in live to make better known the treasures that were lying neglected, and at the same time to overthrow the feeble follies of the "bedding" system. It is mainly owing to his unremitting labours that a clear knowledge of the world of hardy-plant beauty is now placed within easy reach of all who care to acquire it, and that the "bedding mania" is virtually dead." Robinson invited several well-known painters to portray his own landscape artistry, including the English watercolourist Beatrice Parsons, the landscape and botanical painter Henry Moon, and Alfred Parsons. Number 108 of 150 copies printed on vellum with hand coloured frontis and pictorial colophon device by Walter Crane, hand drawn initial letters in gilt, red and blue, bound in full vellum with gilt titles on spine and blind stamped rose and lettering to upper cover, vellum a little darkened on edges of covers. No.9 in the press's "Great Poems in the English Language" series that were published between 1900 and 1905. , The Essex House Press was the press of the Guild of Handicrafts, which had been set up by Charles Robert Ashbee in 1888 and which he moved to Essex House on the Mile End Road in 1891. It was here, in 1898, that the guild took over the staff and presses of William Morris's Kelmscott Press to form the Essex House Press. The years at Essex House were the most successful years for the Guild, which would move again in 1900 to Chipping Camden, where this book was printed. Initially successful in creating Ashbee's idealised working community by 1905 the Guild was starting to make losses and in 1907 the Guild of Handicraft Ltd was put into liquidation. Ashbee's role in the life of the Guild had been that of facilitator, in that it was he who had initially created and guided it. He was also responsible for designing much of its output and in many areas his designs were copied by the wider Arts & Crafts movement. However Ashbee's aims in creating the Guild were wider than simply producing beautifully designed and made items. He was interested in the experience of the artisans who worked for him and in the shaping of aesthetic tastes. The Guild of Handicrafts was perhaps doomed by Ashbee's overly idealistic nature and he himself would attribute some of its failure to the move to Chipping Camden. However Ashbee remains an important and transitional figure who sought a way to bring the ideals of the Arts & Crafts movement into an increasingly mechanised workplace. , 195 x 130 mm, 12 [2] pp .

        The Life and Works of Charles Kinglsey (complete in 19 volumes)

      London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1903. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Very Good+/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This edition, limited to 525 copies, was published between 1901-1903. These books ares clean, tight, square with sharp corners and unmarked (see note on Perry below). There is some light rubbing. The boards are covered in brown silk with gold titles and designs on the spine and a large gilt circular design on the front. Volumes I, II, Vii and XVII have a split at the edge of the back strip near the top. Most of the pages are unopened. These books are from the library of DeWolf Perry and his book plate with his signature is on the front paste down. James DeWolf Perry was an American Episcopal clergyman and prelate. During the Spanish American War, he was chaplain of the 6th Massachusetts Infantry. He married Edith Dean Weir, the artist. On September 21, 1910, Perry was elected the 7th Bishop of Rhode Island at age 39. During World War I, he served as chief of Red Cross chaplains in France from 1918 to 1919. On March 26, 1930, Perry was elected the 18th Presiding Bishop. He was the last Presiding Bishop to retain his diocesan jurisdiction while serving in the national post. The French government awarded him the Legion of Honor in 1934. In a rare instance, he participated directly in politics in 1937 when he accepted an appointment to the Republican Party's Committee on Program, which was charged with drafting "a declaration of principles to redefine the party's stand on political and economic issues.

Chromo-lithograph; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 42 pages; There are 42pp and 24 plates full color full page plates two of which are pasted face down inside the covers with only blank backs showing as issued. The story line is printed on the backs of the plates. Hard paper wraps with red cloth spine. Red dye from spine has migrated into the edge of the binding margin. Does not infringe upon either text or illustrations. Size 8.25 x 6.5". Bienvenue & Schmidt suggest that this was produced as a give-away for audience members at the 125th performance of the theatrical version at the Majestic Theatre in 1903. Bienvenue & Schmidt p.146. Both Hanf and Bienvenue remain silent on why the two plates were pasted to the covers face down. "...First and only printing of rare pamphlet printed on original color plates for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When the George M. Hill Co. , the original publisher of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) , went bankrupt in early 1902, George W. Ogilvie purchased the firm's stock that included unused color plates for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Baum and Denslow sued to have the printing plates to all of their books returned to them as they were negotiating with The Bobbs-Merrill Co. Of Indianapolis to reissue their joint publications. They had every right to as they had paid to have them made. Pictures from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a shameless attempt to cash in on the recent smash hit musical extravaganza The Wizard of Oz. The color lithographed covers were based on publicity photographs of Fred Stone and Dave Montgomery as the Scarecrow and the Tin Man in the play. Because Ogilvie did not possess the book's actual printing plates, he merely commissioned a new story from hack writer Russell and printed it on the versos of Denslow's original color plates. This largely incomprehensible "Story telling the Adventures of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Little Girl" bears almost no resemblance to Baum's American fairy tale. It mentions neither the name "Dorothy" or the word "Oz." Unfortunately, two of the plates (the pictorial title page and the picture of Glinda the Good) were used as endpapers and pasted to the backs of the wrappers. Although Denslow's name appears on both the cover and title page of this pamphlet, he does not seem to have approved of or been personally involved in any way with its production." An interesting and scarce ephemeral production in the Wizard of Oz pantheon. Collates complete. .

Individually housed in contemporary reddish-brown morocco slipcases, blind rules. Doves type printed in black with red initial letters by Edward Johnston, on handmade paper. Slight rust marking to spines of vols. 1 and 4, the latter with two small wormholes affecting spine only but not the contents, the usual spotting to the first gathering of vol. 1, else a fine set. First edition thus, one of 500 sets, the masterpiece of the Doves Press, famous for its austerely dramatic incipit with Johnston's single elongated initial "I"; this copy signed by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, co-owner of the Doves Press, on the blank flyleaf preceding the title in the first volume.

He effected a merger with Marshall & Snelgrove as well as a takeover of Harvey Nichols. He was noted for his paternalistic attitude towards his staff, providing medical and educational support. He was also a pioneer in the dairy industry. On his retirement he sold most of his shares in the firm for £1.8M, so severing his family's connections with the retail chain that still bears his name. He was created a Baronet, of Bladen in the County of Dorset, in 1931 (Wikipedia).

      East Aurora, New York: The Roycrofters, 1903. Hardcover. Fine. Thin folio. 36pp. One of a few 'tall' copies printed on Roycroft handmade paper. Roycrofter records for this period are scant so the total print run of tall copies is unknown but is believed to be fairly limited. The 1905 and 1906 catalogues list the& printing numbers only as "a few". This copy is bound in 3/4 brown levant morocco, marbled paper sides and matching endpapers. The spine is in six compartments with raised bands, and each compartment but the title is exquisitely tooled in a gilt floral motif with colored flower petals. The binding is believed to be by Danish binder Lorenz Schwartz. The colophon identifies the illuminator as Grace Fournier, the daughter of Alexis Fournier. Fournier and his family moved to East Aurora to work for Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters in 1903, the same year as the publication of this title. There are two beautifully illuminated initials in the text, one of them in purple, pink and green with gilt initial, the other in red and green with gilt initial. The colophon is illumined in shades of blue, green and purple, and signed by Grace Fournier. There is a lengthy dedicatory inscription beautifully calligraphed in an arts and crafts style; also by Fournier?? In remarkably fine condition with only a trace of wear to one corner, and the boards yawning a bit.

In a matching morocco-backed felt-lined solander box. Printed in red and black. Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of Paul Chevalier. Tompkinson, p. 171; Ransom 42. With the inevitable slight offsetting to free endpapers from the turn-ins, otherwise A MOST ATTRACTIVE COPY IN VERY FINE CONDITION, the binding lustrous and unworn, and the text with no signs of use. Stikeman's work here adorns a substantial poem in rhyme-royal, "The Kingis Quair," or "King's Quire" (i.e., "King's Book"), composed in England in 1423-24 by James I of Scotland (1394-1437). James had been captured by the English at the age of 12 and detained for 19 years, during which time he became both well educated and betrothed to Lady Jane Beaufort, the heroine of the poem. The work is obviously imaginative and autobiographical, recounting the plight of a love-struck royal prisoner and his (eventually successful) entreaties of Minerva, Venus, and Fortune to aid him in his quest for Lady Jane's hand. The poem, which shows the influence of Chaucer, was discovered and first printed in 1783, and later was quoted from by Rossetti in his "The King's Tragedy," a work which has James, who was assassinated at Perth when he was 43, as its main character. This attractive edition by Charles Ricketts' Vale Press is printed in an uncial-style type appropriately called the King's Fount, and between the typography, the high quality paper that always comes with Vale Press printings, and especially the binding, this is an item with several sources of pleasure. The binding comes from the celebrated collection of Paul Edward Chevalier, about whom, see item #63, above.

      1903. Set of 92 glass lantern slides. Photographs taken circa 1903-1904 by Albert Edward Coe. Images are black and white. Each glass slide measures approximately 8 x 8cm, and each labeled with the photographer's name in gilt. The lot in very good condition, contained in a wooden box, measuring approximately 20 x 38 x 10cm (WxLxH). Accompanied with two manuscript lists in the photographer's hand. The first is headed 'Holiday in the Mediterranean' 10 pages. The second, a double-leaf folio sheet listing the slides. With the innate ability to render objects their due grandeur, renowned nineteenth century photographer Albert Edward Coe, owner of Coe & Sons Ltd. and leader in Britain's elite photographic society, presents sublime views of antiquity and architecture in Turkey and Greece, dispersed with insouciant scenes of travel at the turn of the century. Exclusive and rare! Coe's seafaring tour was one of the last voyages of the clipper SS Cuzco, taken in 1903 or 1904. His journey and artistic approach affords us a unique visual perspective of some of history's most significant landmarks. Features spectacular cityscape and harbour views, ancient towering columns, dilapidating monuments, archaeological sites, and remnants of despotic Roman, Greek, and Byzantine Empires. In Constantinople (Istanbul) we see the interior and exterior of the Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), the Galata Bridge, mosques, and a group of male dervishes. He continues to Smyrna in Anatolia, capturing scenes of the inner city and its people, only a few years before it would see ruin by the Great Fire of Smyrna. Several photographs are taken in Ephesus (Efes) on the west coast of Asia Minor, including an ancient aqueduct and theatre. In Athens, Greece, he photographs the Parthenon and the Erechtheion of the Acropolis. Coe also visits Ancient Corinth and the canal which had just been completed in 1893. Together with Coe's original lists of the photographs. The first is headed 'Holiday in the Mediterranean' and lists photographs in sequence taken, essentially also serving as an itinerary of travel, 10 pages, 8vo fastened with a brad. The second document, headed 'List of Slides' is more specific in naming places and sights, 3 pages written on a folio double-leaf. From these lists it appears that all but nine photographs were made into glass slides. Select photos in this collection warrant special merrit for the breadth achieved, particularly when taken into consideration that the art of photography was still developing, and the tools at Coe's disposal were somewhat rudimentary by today's standards. (The first fully practical color plate, Autochrome, did not reach the market until 1907.) .

Lauriat" on verso of front free endpaper), covers framed by two plain gilt rules, raised bands, spines lavishly gilt in compartments with large central fleuron surrounded by a lozenge of small tools and intricate scrolling cornerpieces, densely gilt turn-ins, top edges gilt. EXTRAVAGANTLY EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 653 PLATES, five of these folding, two double-page, and two colored. Front pastedown with engraved bookplate of Joel Cheney Wells (see below). Just the vaguest hint of rubbing to extremities, isolated small marginal stains, but still A HANDSOMELY BOUND SET IN FINE CONDITION, fresh and clean internally, and in lustrous bindings with few signs of wear. This set contains numerous letters, essays, tales, and poems, as well as Lamb's larger works, "Elia," "The Last Essays of Elia," "Rosamund Gray," "The Pawnbroker's Daughter," and "The Adventures of Ulysses," and the popular childres' works co-authored with his sister Mary. The correspondence of Lamb, by turns witty and meditative, reveals a life of intense reading and writing at a time when British literature was undergoing a radical transformation. Lamb was a friend to many of the leading literary figures of the Romantic period, and his correspondents include Wordsworth, Southey, and Coleridge, whom he had known since his youth. But Lamb is chiefly remembered as "the prince of English essayists." According to Day, Lamb contributed to the essay form by concentrating on feeling, rather than thought, by projecting a fuller sense of self into the work, and by imbuing his text with a poetic or lyrical quality. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was educated at Christ's Hospital, where he formed a lasting relationship with Coleridge. At 17 he joined the East India House, where he worked from 1792-1825. In 1796, Lamb's sister Mary (1764-1847) stabbed and killed their mother with scissors in a fit of insanity. Charles took on her care as well as serving as sole support for a dying aunt and a prematurely senile father. For the two years preceding this catastrophe, Lamb himself had experienced a period of derangement in his early twenties that haunted him the rest of his life. Nonetheless, Lamb and his sister were devoted to one another and lived long and productive lives, publishing together the wildly popular "Tales from Shakespeare" (1807) and "Mrs. Leicester's School" (1809). Some of Mary's poems are also included in this set, which concludes with a two-volume life of Charles Lamb by E. V. Lucas. Former owner Joel Cheney Wells (1874-1960) was an inventor and co-founder American Optical Co., whose collection of early Americana was the foundation of the living museum in Old Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

Unbound as issued in original green cloth portfolios by Carabin-Schildknecht of Brussels, the cloth grained in imitation of cayman, alligator or snake skin, the upper covers with large onset red cloth panels elaborately blocked in gilt with an overall art nouveau design by Francois Wissaert of Brussels, incorporating the title, author's name and an emblematic scene featuring Amazonian Indians, cloth ties. A fine copy of one of the two greatest works on the palm trees of Brazil, illustrated with spectacular semi- abstract images of almost 150 species. The plates divide naturally into two groups: the first smaller group is of views of entire trees, often in their natural setting. These have a naive immediacy and vitality that is charming. The second much larger group of detailed drawings follow the correct guidelines for technical botanical drawings, but, mainly as a result of the need to fold the large leaves to be depicted, they achieve a wonderful semi-abstract status that recalls the photographic work of Man Ray, or painterly images from artists ranging from Georgia O'Keefe to Victor Vasarely. The book was the result of almost thirty years of field work by Barbosa Rodrigues, where, working under extreme conditions, he always tried to produce a record of the plants close to where he had found them. Following in the footsteps of Carl von Martius's Historia naturalis palmarum (Munich, 1823-50), Barbosa Rodrigues notes that he studied and described more than 100 species that were new and unknown to science. Barbosa Rodrigues, Brazilian born botanist and traveller, collected widely in Brazil between 1868 and 1897. Much of his early work was on orchids, and by 1869 he had completed over 800 plates and designs: this work was never published (the albums of drawings are now in the library of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden), and he turned to the study of palms. As he notes in the introduction to the present work: "Aux Orchidées j'ai sacrifié les joies de ma jeunesse, aux Palmiers les loisirs l'âge mûr" [To Orchids I sacrificed the joys of my youth, to Palms the leisure of middle age]. He served as director of the Manaos botanical museum from 1883-1889, and was the first director of the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro from 1889 until his death in 1909. Despite his almost ceaseless travelling within his own country, the only trip he ever made to Europe was to oversee the publication of the present work. That Barbosa Rodrigues should choose Belgium to publish his work is perhaps at first sight surprising, but Belgium in general, and Ghent and Brussels in particular were, at the time, world-renowned centres of excellence in the fields of botanical research and publishing. As the present work so ably demonstrates, a number of the best botanical chromolithographers in the world were then working in Brussels. With thirteen color woodcut illustrations, twelve of them full page (one for each month of the year) by Karl Müller, Wilhelm List, Alfred Roller, Koloman Moser, Ferdinand Andri, Leopold Stoba, Emil Orlik, and Max Kurzweil. Calendars and decorative borders designed by Roller. Roller's lettering was a major influence on the graphic artist Wes Wilson, best known for his psychedelic rock concert posters for the Fillmore in the 1960s. Ver Sacrum was the major publication of the Vienna Secession movement, a group of artists who banded together in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century to challenge what they saw as the conservative, academic bent of the city's art establishment. Their membership included the artists named above, as well as Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and others. Ver Sacrum was published from 1898 to 1903, running essays on art theory, in addition to original artwork by the members and other artists whose work influenced them. In conjunction with the magazine, a yearly calendar was published, this being the last of them.       1903. hardcover. [Bannerman, Helen.] LITTLE DEGCHIE-HEAD. An Awful Warning to Bad Babas. By the Author of "Little Black Mingo" and "Little Black Quibba." London: James Nisbet & Co., 1903. Original light olive cloth illustrated in black and printed in red. First Edition of the most unusual, and one of the least-known, of Helen Bannerman's eight small-format books for children. Five of the eight were about "black" children (though they were really about native Tamils in the region of southern India where Helen Bannerman lived) -- usually outwitting fierce animals that threatened them: LITTLE BLACK SAMBO (1899), LITTLE BLACK MINGO (1901), LITTLE BLACK QUIBBA (1902), LITTLE BLACK QUASHA (1908) and LITTLE BLACK BOBTAIL (1909). Her other three were this one, PAT AND THE SPIDER (1905) and THE TEASING MONKEY (1907). LITTLE DEGCHIE-HEAD (a "degchie" is a large handle-less pot frequently used in Indian cuisine) is about a little (white) girl named Mary who despite warnings from her mother, cannot resist poking at fires; one day she falls into the fire and literally loses her head. Domingo the cook finds her headless body and manages to affix a deghie onto her shoulders as a temporary head (with his artwork for eyes nose and mouth) -- after which Mary hides her head in shame. But on Christmas Eve, Old Father Christmas comes to visit, sees that she needs a new head, and leaves a beautiful doll's head, which, in the morning, Mary successfully glues onto her neck -- after which Mary would never go near a fire any more. As in all of the Bannerman books, the color illustrations (many of which are strange to say the least) are opposite the text, with the reverse side of both leaves blank.         Queer Things About Japan

      London: Anthony Treherne & Co., 1903.. First Edition (First Impression). Half-Leather. Very Good +. An unusual binding with nice gilt decoration to the spine. Corners are bumped and worn and the spine ends are worn at the extremities. Internally it is in nice condition and the Hokusai end papers are present as are all the plates. I don't know if this was a publishers special binding or not. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel.

An excellent set.Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), English poet and critic, “was considered a quintessential Victorian writer in his philosophy, his taste, and his manner of expression” (Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature). His most famous poems are “The Scholar-Gipsy,” “Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse,” “Thyrsis,” an elegy written on the death of Arnold’s friend Arthur Hugh Clough, “which Swinburne adjudged, after Milton’s ‘Lycidas’ and Shelley’s ‘Adonais,’ the finest elegy in the English language; and ‘Dover Beach,’ perhaps his best-known poem, which uses the image of the sea as a metaphor for the Sea of Faith, ebbing away from the naked shores of the world” (Benét’s Reader’s Encyclopedia).
