Enorme collectie handschriften, typoscripten, drukproeven en krantenknipsels. 1928-1937.

In vier archiefdozen.

        Principia Ethica

Cambridge: at the University Press, 1903. Cambridge: at the University Press,, 1903. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine gilt, edges uncut. Light dampstains along lower fore edges of boards, spine ends and board edges a little rubbed, minor wear to fore edge of front board, endpapers lightly tanned. Otherwise an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. G. E. Moore (1873-1958) was critical of the dominant idealist metaphysics of the time. In this, his most famous book, he presents a new approach to ethical theory wherein 'analytical concern with the structure of ethical concepts is sharply separated from debates about the substance of morality' (ODNB). While the integrity of Moore's arguments remains much disputed, it cannot be argued that Principia Ethica greatly influenced 20th century moral philosophy. Connected to the original nucleus of the Bloomsbury Group through his membership of the Apostles, 'Moore was never himself a member … but if he took from them a profound, and perhaps exaggerated, sense of the value of friendship and art, they took from him the thought that lives dedicated to these values were indeed lives well spent. As Keynes later put it, Principia Ethica provided them with their "religion" (Keynes, 436)' (ODNB). Writing to Clive Bell in 1908, Virginia Woolf remarked, 'I am climbing Moore like some industrious insect, who is determined to build a nest on top of a cathedral spire'. This copy with the ownership inscription to front free endpaper of the educationalist and social activist Isabel Fry (1869-1958), while she was headmistress of the experimental Farmhouse School, Mayortorne Manor, Wendover.

Die Malereien der Katakomben Roms. Text u. Tafelband (2 Bde., compl.).

Freiburg, Herder, 1903 - 2°, XIX (1) 596 S., 54 Textabb.; 2 Bl., 267 teilw. farb. Abb., Kart. u. HLwd.-Mappe, Bibliotheksschild a, Rücken. Titelbl. m. Stempel u. - Joseph Wilpert (1857-1944 in Rom), Priester, Christlicher Archäologe.

(1913). Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl.         Series of Autograph Letters and to Gerald Christy and One Page Autobiography

[England]. [England], [early 1900s]. Very Good. An unexpectedly interesting and charming collection of eight letters from Frank Thomas Bullen to Gerald Christy, the manager of The Lecture Agency, which represented a number of major figures of the time. All handwritten but one covering a period from about 1903-1909. Also included is one page of a handwritten autobiography of Bullen. Frank Thomas Bullen (1857-1915 wa a well-known British author and novelist of sea stories and historic naval fiction. The letters mainly discuss various aspects of Bullen's lectures and engagements, such as payments, schedules, and how much the lecture circuit has helped his finances. The final two letters are particularly interesting. In a typed letter dated 28-12-05, Bullen writes: My dear Christy, When with all the ignorance of the novice I first coolly asked you to put me, an absolutely unknown man, on your distinguished list of lectures, I was, although much disappointed by your refusal, charmed with the kindliness with which promised to do what you could for me. My acquaintance with you during the subsequent years has confirmed my first impressions, and I hardly know which I admire most; your business abilities, or the way in which you compel all of your clients to become your friends. Yours (I hope) in Saecula Saeculorum. Written by hand below his signature Bullen writes "Will this do? It's the best I could think of and I hope it will fit the niche you expect" - perhaps in reference to the autobiography? The last two page letter is dated Dec. 9 /09 and concerns Hillaire Belloc at a lecture engagement. Bullen writes "what imibroglio this Harrogate affair has been. Of course I knew nothing of the trouble with Belloc until I got here, but I wasn't long in learning and I must say I was rather disgusted with his attitude." He goes on to describe Belloc's behavior at the event and how the parties involved simply accepted it. The twenty-nine line autobiography ends mid-sentence but seems to be almost complete. He writes of his seafaring life, his wife and dear little girl, of having been a clerk at a London office for sixteen years, and finally of starting to write with a measure of success. He mentions his most famous book, The Cruise of the Cathcelot. All are in very good condition, with creases where folded. The autobiography has sume smudges but also very good. AUTO/052014.

[Two Conjugate Leaves on Vellum from:] THE ENGLISH BIBLE CONTAINING THE OLD TESTAMENT & THE NEW

[London: The Doves Press, 1903 - 05].. [London: The Doves Press, 1903 - 05].. Folio (327 x 470 mm). Two conjugate leaves (4 pp.), folded. Some light dusting in margins, some creasing toward toe of fold, but very good. In a somewhat worn and bumped double die-cut mat. A conjugate specimen leaf from the vellum issue of the Doves Press Bible, printing four pages from II Chronicles (pages 161/2 and 175/6). Long regarded as the Press' masterwork, and numbered among the great achievements of 20th century fine printing, the edition appeared in five volumes over two years and included 500 sets on paper, and only two sets on real vellum (plus one comprised of rejected sheets, according to Tomkinson). Given the improbability of a set reappearing for sale (and the monumental cost if/when that might occur), specimen leaves such as this are the only practical possibility for the average citizen to approach this peak of the art of printing on vellum.         Port Tarascon the Last adventures of the Illustrious Tartarin

London - Sampson Low, Marston & Company, 1903. London - Sampson Low, Marston & Company, 1903 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A 1902 new edition of Port Tarascon by Alphonse Daudet. Alphonse Daudet(13 May 1840 16 December 1897) was aFrenchnovelist. The year 1872 brought the famousAventures prodigieuses de Tartarin de Tarascon, and the three-act playL'Arlsienne. But Fromont jeune et Risler an at once took the world by storm. It struck a note, not new certainly in Engligh Literature, but comparatively new in Frech. His creativeness resulted in characters that were real and also typical. The three Tartarins -Tartarin de Tarascon,Tartarin sur les Alpes,Port-Tarascon- and the short stories, written for the most part before he had acquired fame and fortune, constitute his life work. Condition: In a red cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine and front board. Externally, generally smart with some minor shelfwear only. The spine is faded and there is some wear to the top and tail of the spine. The corners are also a little worn. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some age-toning to the edges of the leaves. Front and back pastedowns and end-papers are a little browned. There is an ink inscription to the recto of front free-end paper. There is a portrait of the author with a tissue guard opposite the title page. Overall:VERY GOOD INDEED..

        Three Bears Asleep

London: Frederick Warne, 1903. London: Frederick Warne, 1903 Pen and ink drawing, 5.35 x 6.35 inches. Pre-publication material for page 50 of The Golden Goose Book. Being the Stories of The Golden Goose, The Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, Tom Thumb (London: Frederick Warne, 1905). Signed with the author's monogram in black ink to the bottom left corner. Image depicts the Three Bears (of Goldilocks and the Three Bears) sleeping in two-poster beds: with Papa Bear in the largest bed with a bear head to the top of his bed frame and an Ursa Major constellation to the foot of his bed; Mama Bear in the middle, wearing a sleeping cap and with a patchwork quilt; Baby Bear in the foreground with bear patterns to his sheets and bed frame. In an original off-white mat with notations: "GG p.50" in pencil denoting the book and page for which this illustration was intended, "reduce to 115 mm" in pencil above the page notation indicating the author's edits for the final drawing, and "73.5%" in blue ink to the lower right corner denoting a similar sizing edit. Doubly matted in white, in a light brown wooden frame. Fine, with a few hints of light smudging and the slightest hint of faint toning to the edges of the sheet near the mat, else fine. A lovely illustration, matted with the artist's edits for publication. This pen and ink drawing of the Three Bears provides insight into L. Leslie Brooke's creative pre-publication process for The Golden Goose Book. While the artist's pencil and pen marginal notations indicate that there were still changes to be made prior to publication, this drawing was likely done closer to the end of the production process; the choice of pen implies an already pre-planned illustration, unlike preliminary sketches, which are usually executed in pencil as the artist is still deciding upon the illustration's layout. This drawing depicts the Three Bears as they appear in the final, published illustration on page 50 of The Golden Goose Book, and the artist's notations are purely logistical, indicating that the material itself had been finalized and that the book was in the process of being laid out. Leonard Leslie Brooke was a prolific British artist and illustrator born to Irish parents. After receiving his training at The Royal Academy of Art, from which he received the Armitage Medal in 1888, Brooke succeeded Walter Crane as illustrator of Mrs. Molesworth's Victorian children's novels for Macmillan. A turning point in his career, he went on to write and illustrate many of his own books, including The Golden Goose Book, the Johnny Crow series, and The Nursery Rhyme Book, among others. Interestingly, when Brooke's publisher Frederick Warne received the proposal of The Tale of Peter Rabbit from Beatrix Potter, Warne sent the illustrations to Brooke, who immediately lauded the artwork and encouraged Warne to publish to book.. Signed by Author. Pen and Ink Drawing. Fine.
