The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come

NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1903. Very Rare Book. Another indicator of it's rarity is the name of the Publisher. Publisher is Grosset & Dunlap of New York.Grosset & Dunlap is a United States book publisher founded in 1898. Book is in tack. Will need some restoration. Imaging finding a book from the late 1800 with a love note dedicating this book to Miss Carrie Duke. Rare edition thus. Hardcover. Orig. spine that is intact but needs restoration. Front and back cover intact. I searched the internet intensively and found pictures of first editions HOWEVER none of them had the love dedication note or the black trim around the title of the book. Information on Miss Carrie Duke listed below:Woman's Work in Kentucky." by Mrs. Eugenia Dunlap Potts. Publication: Eagle, Mary Kavanaugh Oldham, ed. The Congress of Women: Held in the Woman's Building, World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, U. S. A., 1893. Chicago, Ill: Monarch Book Company, 1894. pp. 562-568.Susannah Hart, the aunt of Mrs. Henry Clay, raised and pulled the flax which she wove and spun into her wedding gown, with an art so clever that she could draw the width through her wedding ring. She belonged to the wealthiest of those early families of note, and was the wife of Gov. Isaac Shelby. She died at the age of seventy-two years at "Travelers' Rest," the grand old homestead which has never passed out of the Shelby family. She was the mother of ten children, and her descendants are widely scattered. Mary Hopkins Cabell Breckinridge was a contemporary whose work can never die. Hers were not deeds of daring nor of tragic from the lurking Indian. Her power was in her eloquent conversation, her strong opinions, her decided views of duty. Her sons are orators and statesmen; her daughters are ambitious and progressive. Margaret Breckinridge, a granddaughter, devoted heart and hands to hospital work during the war of the Blue and the Grey; and by her gentle, self-sacrificing ministering was named the "Angel of the hospitals." She said, "Shall men die by thousands for their country and no woman risk her life?" Still a younger generation is led by Miss Sophronisba Breckinridge, who after years of travel in Europe, studied law in her father's office. Mrs. Catherine Hunt, the chatelaine of one of Lexington's proud homes, reigned a queen in her domain. The train of servants, the management of her handsome estate and all the demands upon the mistress of such possessions, called for executive ability of rare degree. Hers was the thinking head and the guiding hand. The Baroness Burdett Coutts says: "Woman may be allowed to lead in acts of charity," and right nobly has she set this example. This woman, Mrs. Hunt, used her prerogative here. Sixty-one years ago, when cholera wellnigh depopulated the Blue Grass capital, she went forth on pious mission bent. Coming upon three desolate little children, whose parents lay dead, she said to a friend: "What shall we do with them? Let us buy them a home." She opened her purse and established the Orphans' Home, Lexington's oldest charitable institution, where many little feet have found a resting place. Mrs. Henrietta Hunt Morgan was her daughter, and the Hon. Francis Kay Hunt, of legal celebrity, was her worthy son. Mrs. Morgan presided over her household much after the manner of her bringing up. She was the mother of a remarkable family. Her sons were Gen. John Hunt Morgan, Col. Calvin Morgan, Capt. Charlton Hunt Morgan, and Lieut. Thomas Morgan. Her daughters were the wives of Gen. A. P. Hill and of Gen. Basil W. Duke. Behold the evolution of the Kentucky girl, if I may so term the greater liberty of today! Mrs. Henrietta Morgan Duke, of Louisville, Ky., one of our commissioners, is a woman of incomparable qualities of heart and brain. She reflects the grandmother and mother in strength of character and in executive ability. Times have changed, and she has risen to the demands. Her young daughter, Miss Carrie Duke, the violin virtuoso, represents the fourth generation of this family. The ancient code would have held her captive, but the liberty of the present sent her abroad to develop the divine genius that now sways multitudes. Another young descendant of Mrs. Hunt is Miss Lucy Lee Hill, a World's Fair Commissioner, who bravely and briskly went about the work of collecting exhibits; faithfully she has presided at the state building. Yet another great-granddaughter is Miss Eleanor Howard Morgan, daughter of Capt. Charlton Morgan, who entered Bryn Mawr College, where her scientist brother, Dr. Thomas Morgan, holds the chair of biology. This young girl perfectly illustrates the fact that developing a woman's brain does not necessarily rob her of feminine charm. No lily of the valley, breathing its delicate fragrance far below the gaze of man, is more modestly environed; yet her influence pervades all the atmosphere about her. She inherits, not the dash of her uncle, the cavalry chief, but the steady glow of woman's star when lit by the brilliancy of intellectual fireSince I don't have a true value of this book, it may be priceless. I have decided to start at $5000.00.

        Autograph Note Signed.

The most famous expatriate of them all was this experimental novelist, playwright and poet who removed to Paris in 1903 and remained there for the rest of her life; an influential mentor, critic and literary innovator, she championed Modernist literature and art and is today often remembered for her 1933 memoir "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" and her often-quoted "rose is a rose is a rose" sentiment. ANS, 1p, 5¼" X 8", Bilignin France, n.y. Very good. On imprinted "Bilignin / Par Belley / Ain" letterhead, Stein pens a note in her horrid scrawl in brown ink to admirer Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Reads in part: "Thanks for your birthday letter it gave me a lot of pleasure, I like the mixture of Ohio and [ ? ], it brings everything closer...." Signed with her usual illegible scribble. A nice example, and while undated quite likely of mid-1930s vintage. Bilignin is a small village in France near the Swiss border where Stein and her companion Toklas spent the summers.

The Riddle Of The Sands (First UK Edition)

The First UK printing published by London, Smith Elders & Co.in 1903.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD+ condition. 336pp. + 4pp ads. Publisher's decorated black cloth with titles in white to the spine though quite rubbed as is lamentably often the case.Light bumping to extremities, rubbing to spine not affecting the integrity of the book.Decorated boards sharp, a little bit of inoffensive wear here and there.Internally free from inscriptions and erasures. There is the expected occasional light spotting.Illustrated with fold out maps and charts which are all present.Frontispiece folding chart a trifle creased with some light soiling to the title page.Housed in a custom slander box.A very good copy of the first edition of a book somewhat contentiously described as the first modern espionage novel, vying for the title with Kipling's Kim, published two years earlier. Originally written after he returned injured from action in South Africa and first published in 1903 the novel of imminent conflict with Germany was highly influential and is actually credited with the founding of British naval bases at Invergordon and Scapa Flow; newly regarded as strategically important after examination of the scenarios in Childer's novel. Childers was of course a staunch advocate of Irish Home Rule and was found guilty of possessing a firearm in contravention of the Irish Emergency Powers Resolution and sentenced to death by firing squad in 1922.The book was adapted in 1979 into a movie starring Michael York and Simon MacCorkindale. An exceptionally scarce and important title to find in any condition.Highly collectible with such attributes. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.

        April Twilights

Boston: Richard G. Badger, The Gorham Press, 1903. First edition. Original boards, cover and spine labels. A little bit of darkening to the spine, and discoloration of the endpapers, but a fine copy. with what may be the original glassine wrapper. Crane A1.a. First edition of Cather's first book, and her only collection of poetry, published at her own expense. Joan Crane, citing American Book Prices Current for 1930, noted a copy of April Twilights with a tipped-in "Literary Note", and concluded, although never seeing it, that it was "an announcement flyer for the book in the form of an advertisement and order form issued by the publisher...." In 1997 we discovered what was then the only known surviving example of this note, and identified it as being of Cather's authorship. The note is discussed in David H. Porter's "On the Divide: The Many Lives of Willa Cather." In this copy the "Literary Note" is tipped to the front endpaper, as might be done for a review copy.

[Photo Album]: Pamatnik 1902-03 [Austro-Hungarian Navy]

[Croatia]. 1903. Oblong quarto. Measuring 17" x 12". Custom cloth-covered portfolio album containing 38 stiff sheets with 165 gelatin silver photographs, and 28 mounted postcards. The photos measuring between 3.5" x 2.25" and 4" x 3". The sheets are hand titled in pen throughout. Near fine portfolio with part of the silk tie missing and modest wear to the extremities and hinges with fine and fresh images with only light bumping to the sheets. A portfolio album with photographs attractively arranged to commemorate service in the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Based in Pola, on the Adriatic (today the modern Croatian city of Pula), the Austro-Hungarian Navy (K.u.K. Kriegsmarine) was a major force in European naval affairs at the turn of the century and playing a role in international conflicts, such as the Boxer Rebellion in China. The person who created this album apparently served on three vessels during their tour, the Ironclad Warship SMS Tegetthoff (launched 1878), the Screw Corvette SMS Saida (launched 1878), and the pre-Dreadnought Monarch-class coastal defense ship SMS Wien (launched 1896). These three ships are each given separate photographic treatments, but a large number of other ships, both warships and commercial sailing vessels, are seen throughout the porfolio. Images capture shipboard life, torpedo boats, armaments training, naval maneuvers, shore life in Pula, a trip to the Near East, and naval visits to Dubrovnik and Gruz in Croatia, the Port of Piraeus (Athens), and Thessalonica in Greece, and the Greek Islands of Samos and Corfu. There are also a number of mounted postcards of various ships and locations, including a panorama of Pola signed by 25 sailors. About a dozen photos appear to have been captioned in the negative. A wonderfully comprehensive and uncommon view of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. .

April Twilights. Poems by Willa Sibert Cather.

Boston: Richard G. Badger, The Gorham Press,, 1903. Octavo. Original grey-brown boards, printed paper label to front cover and another to spine. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and green quarter morocco slipcase. Lacking the front free endpaper, front board re-attached, small dampstain in margin, slipcase a little rubbed. An excellent copy. First edition of the author's first book. Presentation copy inscribed on the title page by the author, "To Zoe Akins with One Million Good Wishes, Willa S. Cather." The recipient was a successful playwright and screenwriter, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her adaptation of Wharton's The Old Maid. It is probable that this was inscribed in the 1920s. Cather's attitude towards her early poems changed over the years, and when this book was re-issued in 1923, many of these poems were not reprinted. Badger's Gorham Press was essentially a vanity operation, where authors paid the expenses of publication. In 1908, Cather purchased the remaining copies from the publisher and destroyed them. From the collection of M. B. Goldstone. Laid in is a letter addressed to Goldstone from a collector who owned another copy of April Twilight, signed and dated by Cather and owned by Akins, as well as a copy of Sonnets to Duse by Sara Teasdale, inscribed by its author to Akins.

Sixteen Illustrations of Subjects from Kipling's "Jungle Book."

London: MacMillan and Co., 1903. - DETMOLD, Edward (1883-1957), DETMOLD, Maurice (1883-1908). Sixteen Illustrations of Subjects from Kipling's "Jungle Book." London: MacMillan and Co., 1903. Folio. 16 chromolithograph plates (13 x17 inches), each with printed leaf of descriptive text, housed in original green cloth gilt portfolio, 31 additional color trial proofs on various papers, many annotated by the artist and/or printer, housed in a separate green cloth portfolio with printed label to upper cover; the two volumes housed together in custom ecru clamshell box (tiny tears on edges of title page, some spotting on the text leaves, repairs to two 1.5 inch tears on proof #17 of 'Council Rock' and repairs to a half inch tear and torn corner on an unmarked proof of 'Baloo in the Forest'). Provenance: Bonham's sale 23413, Lot 91. FIRST EDITION, WITH ADDITIONAL COLOR TRIAL PROOFS, SOME ANNOTATED BY EDWARD DETMOLD. The additional plates include "Council Rock" (one final and 8 color trial proofs); "Mowgli and Bageera" (one final and 3 color trial proofs); and "Baloo in the Forest" (2 finals and 16 color trial proofs, including one heavily edited by Edward Detmold). Edward and Maurice Detmold, twin brothers, were talented illustrators by the age of 13, "From the age of five both boys showed an interest in drawing animals at London zoo and spent six months studying drawing at the Hampstead Conservatoire. Precociously talented, they first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the age of thirteen, attracting the attention of Edward Burne-Jones," (NPG 3037). Their work was dedicated to the masterful illumination of animals in particular, and became highly sought after in Edwardian society. Many of their illustrations reflect influence from Japanese art, Albrecht Dürer, and the Art Nouveau movement. THE JUNGLE BOOK "The end result of this incongruous joining together of the quasi-scientific and the ornamental is an image which is both fanciful and often rather disturbing." (Diana Johnson, RISD: Fantastic Illustration and Design in Great Britain, 1850-1930). Edward and Maurice published the plates for Kipling's The Jungle Book in 1903 when they were twenty years old, and five years before the illustrations were resized and published with the text. Dark and bold, with beautifully defined characters set in elegant yet wild environments, these plates best represent the influence of Dürer's striking woodcuts on the Detmold brothers' art. From a review published in the 1904 issue of the magazine The Studio, "Their study of natural history enabled the clever young artists to choose without difficulty a number of subjects especially well-suited to their powers of illustration, and the decorative treatment of the various animals and reptiles, as well as of the figure of Mowgli himself, displays skillful and sound draughtsmanship." This was to be their last project together, as Maurice committed suicide in 1908. Edward continued to paint and print illustrations for hugely successful books such as The Fables of Aesop (1909) and Maeterlinck's The Life of the Bee (1911). In 1957, due to a depression that set in after two world wars, Edward took his life and followed Maurice in death.         Études et Préludes [Inscribed & Signed]

Alphonse Lemerre [1903?], Paris - Second edition of the Sapphic author's first book, originally published in 1901 under the genderless authorship of "R. Vivien," and dedicated "A N.," Vivien's American expatriate lover Natalie Clifford Barney. By the publication of this edition approximately two years later, Vivien would have already enjoyed limited but enthusiastic critical success, which may explain why she and her publisher chose to publish under her full name, rendering the nature of her work more explicit. Works in this collection include the love poems "A la Femme Aimée" ("To the Beloved Woman"); "A l'Amie" ("To a Woman Friend"); and "Nudité," which refers to a nude lover's virgin breasts. Works inscribed by Vivien are rather scarce, as she died in 1909 at the premature age of 32. Small octavo (18.75cm.); recent black morocco-backed marbled boards, original blue pictorial wrappers bound in, custom cloth clamshell box; [12],134pp. Fine.       8vo., 2 volumes in half gilt ruled brown morocco, spine panelled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. A very good set. A handsomely printed edition of Varavenargues's maxims in parallel french and english text.. Luc de Clapiers, marquis de Vauvenargues was a minor French writer and moralist. He died at age 31, in broken health, having published the year prior--anonymously--a collection of essays and aphorisms with the encouragement of Voltaire, his friend. He first received public notice under his own name in 1797, and from 1857 on, his aphorisms became popular. In the history of French literature, his significance lies chiefly in his friendship with Voltaire (20 years his senior).
