HAMON SHUU: COLLECTION OF WAVE & RIPPLE DESIGNS.

[Kyoto 1903, Unsodo]. Blue stitched wrs., very good, 3 vol.. set, 76 double-folded sheets, 152p. woodcut illustraions of. waves, wave patterns & water, very good copy, 16 x 24 cm.. covers bright, contents clean. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. A COLLECTION OF THE MYRIAD OF WAVES & WATER PATTERNS With 4 pages of text. This work shows every conceivable wave, water & theme possible. A designer's wish book, lovely, unique drawings in Japanese. Basically this was done as a guide for Japanese craftsmen to create sword furniture, Netsuke, lacquer ware, Buddhist art works and a host of other practical applications to Japanese arts. * Some of these designs are found on Tsuba, and in sword blades, as well as sword cases & stands. These fabulous forms are commonly found in paintings, handmade papers, book covers, and decorations on ceramics, textiles, and on any other object with appliqué design. Books of this caliber are not commonly found, as most were simply "used up" by those who used them as a reference in the creative process. * Hokusai was one of the master print-makers and painters who skillfully used water and wave patterns in his illustrated books [E-hon], which have been copied and duplicated throughout. * Color scans can be sent by email.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1903 - 1903 Original Hardback Wisden. Very Good Condition.

1903. Hi, Here we have a very rare 1903 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. The 8th Wisden Hardback. As per all 1903s the hinges were broken, Wisden forgot the strengtheners and hence why you never see one with original hinges or just with broken ones, but I have had them proffesionally restored and you can hardly tell, otherwise a super book. The lettering (gilt) is bright and strong to the front and to the spine. The front board is in excllent condition. The spine cloth has the odd mark and at an angle the rear board has a splattering of marks but not obvious unless you look under light. The pastedowns are bright and yellow, and the pages very clean, some spotting around the photoplate tissue which is in very good condition. 1903 is a rare Wisden.

MEANDERINGS: Special For the 'Singapore Free Press.' Two Articles on Travels in

Singapore [1903-07], Singapore Free Press. Blue cloth album,. covers faded, corners rubbed, several pieces of cloth miss-. ing, 74 numbered pages, each page has 3 columns of articles. tipped in from the newspaper, 25 x 30.5 cm. contents clean.. A very interesting collection of newspapers, issued in serial form, each numbered, and all signed by C.T.S, and extracted from the SINGAPORE FREE PRESS. A most detailed & extensive description of Japan and Malaya. * The first part covers pages 1-63 and is a comprehensive article of the author's sojourn & travels throughout all of Japan. It begins in 1903 through the last part in 1906. The author left Singapore, bound for Japan via Hong Kong and Shanghai, with passage on a Japanese ship. The British author befriended several Japanese in an earnest effort to learn about the Japanese personality and to write of their spirit and excellent manners. It is a lovely, flowing narrative from his own diary, and covers the first stop in Hong Kong. A lovely description of the "quiet" island and it's steep Peak. With day trips to Aberdeen, the post office and so on. * Next stop was Shanghai, where it was winter ! A ride in the Chinese wheel-barrow, taking photos, visit to the race course, the Country Club, Nanking Road, the Bund, a trip down the river, back to the ship, and continue on to Japan. * Arrival at Nagasaki, watching as 1360 tons of coal were man-handled aboard in some four hours ! From here on the story is continued with much excellent detail about Japan, her people, sights, traditions and scenery. * Mr. S. tells us of his Jinriksha rides to the various sights. What makes this narrative not only different but superior to others is the attention to detail. The meticulous author tells us his story of the sights and sounds of the country and people as if he were a camera. He faithfully records exactly what turn-of-the century Japan was like. He noticed everything & faithfully recorded it in these articles. Using his ship as a "hotel" the author visited all of the ports from Nagasaki to Yokohama. Stopping at each port, he thoroughly explored each city to the maximum. The next port was Kobe and the Naval Review, Motomachi, Shinto & Buddhist shrines. On to Yokohama, where the author had breakfast with Basil Chamberlain on Easter Sunday, and who escorted him via Jinrickishas to see the cherry blossoms. On to Ueno park, Shinto shrines, a Christian book store, and other points of interest in Tokyo. Return to Yokohama to to the Ball by the St. George Society, a visit to the Buddhist Temple of Hommonji at Ikegami. Then Mr. S. continued on a journey throughout the rest of Japan, down the West coast visiting the sights, taking trains, horseback rides, and by jinrikishas to Miyanoshita, Shizuoka, down the Tokaido, to Kyoto, Miidera, Awata Palace, Kin and Gin Kakuji, Chuzenji, Nikko, Utsunomiya, up Mt. Fuji, Karuizawa, experienced an earthquake, tea-ceremony, Ise & much more. * The second part also written by C.T.S. covers pages 66-77 with three columns of articles tipped in concerning his travels and experiences in Malaya from 1907-07. It starts with notes on Penang, of coolies, notable English merchants, natives, Taipings, motoring, Ipoh and beyond, Seremban curios, long motor trips to Raub and Kuala Lumpur, and other random journeys throughout the country. Page 76 has an article extracted from THE JOURNAL OF THE THAMES, Feb. 20, 1892 which is on sailing. A few last random articles from the Singapore Free Press concerning H.G. Wells. Most all articles are either layed down, or pinned to the pages with period straight-pins. A most obscure and otherwise unpublished set of excellent primary essays. After a search of several bibliographies to try to determine just who C.T.S. is, we could not find a matching name. Clearly Mr. S. was a British resident or possibly civil servant who lived and worked in Singapore during this period. * Excellent primary resource. Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. * * * * BUY WITH .

THE WOODLANDERS (Presentation Copy Inscribed by the Author)

London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1903. Hardy, Thomas. THE WOODLANDERS. With a map of Wessex. London: Macmillan, 1903. Early reprint edition in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. A FINE, fresh copy INSCRIBED by the author on the front free endpaper and dated 1907. The presentation is rather enigmatic. "For Alliance sake (I. K. H7. VI)." Hardy seems to be quoting Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 1, Act Two, Scene Five in which an unjust death is blamed as being "for alliance sake." THE WOODLANDERS is itself filled with Shakespeare allusions, especially Hamlet, and Henry VI Part 1 is alluded to in other of Hardy's works. A mystery only partially solved and a recipient as yet entirely unknown. Purdy p. 57.. Inscribed By Author. Decorative Cloth. Fine.

[Photographs]: New Jersey Infrastructure and Transportation Reference Photos

New Jersey. [1930s]. A collection of 217 photographs from PSEG (Public Service Enterprise Group) printed in the 1930s measuring between 5" x 7" to 8" x 10", most with captions. All photos about near fine with some original envelopes and negatives. PSEG was formed in 1903 after the merger of numerous smaller energy companies and firms throughout New Jersey. These prints, created in the 1930s, are taken from a variety of sources from the early days of the company and its sister companies starting in the late-1800s to promote the new face of the New Jersey power company. They show towns and companies throughout New Jersey, some after natural disasters, roads, buildings, public transportation, and company baseball games. Companies shown are the Newark Gaslight Company founded in 1845, United Electric Company of New Jersey, and Citizens Gaslight Company founded in 1870, these and numerous other branches of small New Jersey area power companies combined to form what is now PSEG. One photo of a group of men taking the field in baseball uniforms is captioned, "first field day meet of the P.S. Railway May 20, 1913 - Hilton Oval." Another photos shows downed power lines and reads, "Elizabeth - E. Grand St. and Jefferson Ave. Pole line result of storm March 1, 1914." The same storm is captured in a photo from Plainfield showing "P.S.E. wires in good shape," while "Western Union Line down." A photo depicting a horse drawn car that reads "Belleville & Cemetery" on the side is captioned, "driver - Mr. James J. Noonan 1884 - Jimie had more claim to fame than merely as chauffeur of the deluxe equipage he was the backstop for the old Woodstock's baseball team and a hero to all the kids of the Woodside section and Belleville." An extensive collection of photographs depicting the first few decades of the 20th Century in New Jersey and the early days of PSEG. .

        Principia Ethica.

Cambridge, 1903. 8vo. Orig. brown full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Uncut and unopened. Apart from very tiny bumps to capitals, a completely fresh and clean copy - near mint condition. Inscribed (in the month of publication) on the half-title: "H.G. Dakyns/ from G.E.M./ October, 1903". XXVII, (1), 232 pp.. A magnificent presentation-copy of the first edition of Moore's seminal magnum opus, his hugely influential "Principia Ethica", which helped found analytic philosophy and introduced and named the "naturalistic fallacy". The present copy is inscribed, in the month of publication, for Henry Graham Dakyns, who was a close friend of Moore's at Trinity. "Moore's "Principia Ethica" (1903) is a landmark in the history of ethics. Its impact and influence on subsequent ethical theory, at least in Anglo-American philosophy, have been tremendous. Its specific doctrines of the indefinability of good and of the naturalistic fallacy, whether reinforced, amended, or even rejected, by later theorists, have served as the starting points of much of twentieth century philosophy." (Morris Weitz, 20th-Century Philosophy: The Analytic Tradition, (1966), p. 68).George Edward Moore (1873-1958) is one of the most influential twentieth century philosophers, and his contributions to analytic philosophy can be compared only to those of Russell, Wittgenstein, and Frege, with whom he founded this philosophical discipline. His impact on Anglo-American philosophy in the 20th century is unsurpassed. "Principia Ethica" is the most important of Moore's works. In this work, he makes use of analysis to establish the main doctrines of the book, and thereby lays one of the cornerstones of analytic philosophy. Moore here applies logic to ethics and shows us how this can provide a better foundation for ethics. Moore begins by showing that analysis will reveal to us that "good" is a simple, non-natural, and indefinable property, which cannot itself be defined and analyzed, because it is not a complex object that can be divided, but a simple object of thought and goes on to define ethics as an inquiry into what is good. He furthermore shows how sometimes false premises in the definition of good lead to false conclusions about ethical behavior and he introduces his seminal concept "naturalistic fallacy", which is defined as the error of assuming that "good" can be defined by naming various properties of things which we believe to be good. "Naturalism", according to Moore falsely assumes to have defined "good" and is therefore unable to provide any logical reason for any principle of ethics."It appears to me that in Ethics, as in all other philosophical studies, the difficulties and disagreements, of which history is full, are mainly due to a very simple cause: namely to the attempt to answer questions, without first discovering precisely WHAT question it is which you desire to answer. " (Moore, Preface, p. VIII). "The influence [of "Principia Ethics"] was not only overwhelming; it was exciting, exhilarating, the beginning of a renaissance, the opening of a new heaven on a new earth, we were the forerunners of a new dispensation, we were not afraid of anything." (Keynes)
