Wezatas Manadshafte [Special Issue on William Morris and the Kelmscott Press]

Wald Zachrisson, Goteborg Sweden 1903 - A rare copy of an issue of a Swedish publication honoring William Morris and the Kelmscott Press that beautifully exemplifies the breadth of Morris's influence on modern fine printing. This tribute was published by Wald Zachrisson, a master printer, publisher, and craftsman who was described in 1922 by Frederic Goudy in "Arts Typographica" as having "done more to lift the printing industry in Scandanavia than any other man." Peter Waldemar Anders Zachrisson (1861-1924) was a Swedish book printer based in Gothenburg. Zachrisson's important efforts to reform Swedish typography and book arts were inspired by William Morris among others. He named his printing company Wezäta AB after his initials. One of his publications that became an important medium for Zachrisson's ideas about printing, typography, and crafts were Wezätas month booklets. The booklets were published from 1902-1912 with widely varying content such as essays about Albrecht Dürer, Carl Milles, Ernst Josephson and Christopher Plantin, which alternated with essays whose themes are exemplified by titles like material idealism, Swedish art and the classic line, or a few words about taste. There were full booklets devoted to people like William Morris, Arnold Böcklin and Axel Petersson in Döderhult or to subjects like Japanese art. Every issue had changes - a new method of reproduction, new paper grades, colors or printing processes. Many German, English and American professionals and trade magazines expressed admiration. This is a remarkably fine copy of this special issue on Morris. It includes a biography in Swedish with a portrait of Morris, and drawings of Kelmscott Manor and the Kelmscott House and Press; a facsimile of four pages from "Notes by William Morris on His Aims in Founding the Kelmscott Press;" and copies of the first two pages of Reynard the Foxe, and two pages from the Chaucer. The cover of the periodical has the title and publication information surrounded by a beautiful color border of a William Morris design. In near fine condition save for a small stain on the bottom edge of the rear cover. 6 x 9 inches. Partially paginated [20 pages]. MOR/060316.

      - 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dresden, February 3, 1903. In black ink on stationery with watermark "Extra Superfine." In German (with translation).Draeseke thanks the musicologist Hans Volkmann belatedly for sending him a copy of his new book on the composer Robert Volkmann (1815-1883):". I learned of your address [only] yesterday through my old friend, Geheimer Hofrat Stern. Perhaps it will be of interest to you that, while living in Lausanne, I have energetically championed [Robert Volkmann's Piano] trio in B-flat minor. [I wish] your book, devoted to the memory of such an excellent musician, the widest possible dissemination."Slightly creased at upper edge.Together with:Vintage postcard bust-length photograph, ca. 136 x 87 mm. With reproduction signature to lower margin. Edges slightly worn and silvered; verso lightly browned with some biographical annotations in pencil. "Early in his career Draeseke was among the most original of the composers associated with the New German school of Wagner and Liszt, but by the time of this essay [Die Konfusion in der Musik, 1906] he had become more conservative in style. He developed a distinct approach to harmony, and an idiosyncratic handling of voice leading." Alan H. Krueck in Grove online Robert Volkmann's Piano Trio in B-flat minor, op. 5 (1850), mentioned in the letter "was championed by Liszt, to whom it was dedicated, and admired by Bülow and Wagner." Thomas M. Brawley in Grove onlineHans Volkmann's monograph on his great uncle Robert is considered to be one of his most significant works. Adolf Stern (1835-1907) was a poet and literary historian.

Size: 26 x 18 Cm. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed "E. Granados" to the French music publisher Bellon

      - 1-1/4 pp. Octavo. Dated Barcelona, November 30, 1903. In black ink. On stationery with "Academia Granados" printed at head. In French (with translation).Granados grants Bellon the exclusive rights to his works in France. In a postscript he also mentions "Pablo" - almost certainly the noted cellist Pablo Casals (1876-1973)."I have spoken with my editors and they agreed to cede to you the exclusive rights of my works for all of France. I very much wish to see Paris again, and I will do so with the greatest pleasure on that occasion. One day or another I will travel there for nothing more than my own pleasure, and I assure you I will bear that expense without regret. You told me that Pablo would return the 25th - In a letter Pablo tells me that he will be there the 7th. I will certainly tell you of his return." Slightly worn; creased at folds. Catalan pianist and composer Enrique Granados "appeared frequently in recitals, concerto performances and chamber music alongside such prominent figures as Thibaud, Saint-Saëns and Casals, a personal friend, for whom he composed several pieces. He became well known for his impromptu improvisations. Granados';s musical language is rooted in mainstream European traditions, frequently blended with elements derived from traditional Spanish (and less often Catalan) folk music. [His] foremost strength was undoubtedly his melodic gift, which can be best appreciated in his songs and piano works. Granados made a significant contribution to the development of a national Spanish school and, though he is often considered more conservative than Albéniz or Falla, the degree to which native elements inform his music should not be underestimated. " Mark Larrad in Grove Music Online.Jean-Bénédikt Bellon (1867-1914) was active as a music publisher from ca. 1902-07. Letters of Granados are rare; this is a rather significant example.

Holy Bible]. THE ENGLISH BIBLE containing the Old Testament and the New translated out of the original tongues by Special Command of His Majesty King James the First and now reprinted with the text revised by a collation of its early and other principal editions and edited by the late Rev. F. H. Scrivener...

Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1903-1905. 5 volumes. Limited edition of 500 copies printed on fine white paper with characteristic Doves Press watermark. With fine calligraphic initial letters executed in hand in red ink by Edward Johnstone. Each volume with title and colophon. Large 4to, bound by the Doves Bindery in original limp vellum, the spines lettered and numbered in gilt. Housed in a two piece morocco edged blue slipcase. A beautiful and very fine set, a very few gatherings lightly spotted as is usual. The vellum bindings in very beautiful condition, the leaves crisp and bright and clean. FIRST EDITION OF THE GREATEST BOOK OF THE DOVES PRESS, HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND VERY SCARCE. Considered the major book of this Press, the opening page to Genesis is critically acclaimed as one of the finest pages printed, certainly of modern production. Roderick Cave, in his THE PRIVATE PRESSES, has said, "Johnston's masterly calligraphic initials...were a perfect example of how to marry calligraphy and typography, and [the pressman] J. H. Mason's setting was full of those almost invisible refinements that only another printer can recognize" (p. 122). Ransom described the distinctive red initials by Edward Johnston as "a pattern for all time of complexity reduced to the minimum of simplicity." THE HOLY BIBLE was an all-together perfect choice to be the masterwork of this press. To again quote Roderick Cave, "[T]he Doves Press was a religious activity; its discipline one of prayer rather than of chorus girl....Books could reduce God to a page of visible type, as sunlight on a still morning showed the river in His form; and that was the reason for making a book with immense care, and making it beautiful.” Thus the greatest of all books became the most splendid offered in the press’ wonderfully elegant format of clean, pure and understated simplicity.

Rare, magnificently and accurately illustrated, indispensible original edition with detailed and exceptionally clean plates of the earliest excavations by Norman de Garis Davies of El Amarna--the city built in the desert by the controversial monotheistic Pharaoh Akhenaten near the end of the 18th Dynasty. Because of the widespread destruction of records and artifacts relating to the Pharaoh Akhenaten, his beautiful wife Queen Nefertiti, and his son Tutankhamon--caused by centuries of erosion, robbers, and recently by religiously-inspired vandals at a museum directly across the Nile from Amarna, this series of excellently executed records has even greater importance now than when it was initially published. Norman de Garis Davies, (1865-1941) was a wealthy Englishman and former Unitarian minister who gave up being a pastor for his love of archaeology and associated artistic renderings. Davies was initially active at Tell el Amarna from 1903 to 1907. There, he worked various non-royal and royal grave groups a few miles from the Central City, as well as the royal necropolis of the royal grave (no. 26) and graves no. 27-30. These graves were located in the northern limestone mountains nearly 100-feet up on the steep slope of the desert mountain edge. In his capacity of Field Director / Survey Project of the Archaeological Survey, Davies published layouts of the graves of officials at Tell el-Amarna in the Archeological Survey in 6 "Memoirs" from 1903 to 1908, which we offer here. Between 1905 and 1907, Davies also worked for George Andrew Reisner in Geza and James Henry Breasted in Nubia. In 1906, Norman became engaged to Anna (nick-named "Nina") Macpherson Cummingson, and they married on October 8th, 1907. She is noted for the quality of her architectural drawings and recreations. In 1912, Norman de Garis Davies was awarded the Leibniz Medal of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. The husband-&-wife archaeological-and-artistic studies of ancient Egypt continued throughout their lives. Among their subsequent famous publications, we note Nina's drawings for the MMA from the grave of Djehuty kt 45 (1908). When Egyptologist Alan H. Gardiner saw Nina's work, he became so impressed that he agreed in 1909 to buy as many pictures of her work as he could afford. Thereafter, considerable acclaim attended their Thebes Tomb Series (TTS) in five editions of the "Memoirs" of the EDF from 1915-1933. In addition, for the 1926-27 archaeological excavation season, Norman and Nina received permission from the MMA to help the Egypt Exploration Society in Tell el-Amarna. Their work followed excavations begun by Henri Frankfort in November 1926. Charles K. Wilkinson, who had belonged since 1920 to the graphic department of the Metropolitan Museum, made a series of preliminary drawings, while Norman and Nina made color copies. This work resulted in the book: The Mural Painting of el-'Amarna, which Henri Frankfort issued in 1929 and to which Norman contributed a chapter. Nina also published color copies of the frescoes in the northern palace, and together they were represented by other drawings. Because of thievery, the frescoes were removed later and the fragments brought to the museum in Cairo. Her drawings became an important source for reconstructing the entirety. Norman De Garis Davies died in his sleep of heart failure at Oxford on 4 November 1941. Continuing to work on their unfinished projects throughout the Second World War, Nina prepared Norman's work on the Temple of Hibis. She put together the material and let the drawings photographed. Finally, she sent everything to the Metropolitan Museum. Unfortunately, in their publication of 1953, her earlier work found no mention: see, Part III, The Decoration. Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York. 1953. Nina & Norman's Egyptian collection was bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and his books to the University College, London. His written documents went to the Griffith Institute. According to Martin Fitzenreiter: Contemporary Art, 2002: "The works by this artist-Egyptologist belong without question to the best that can be achieved by the art of copyists. The accuracy of the strokes, especially the delicacy of color rendering their work of many years of empathy with the nature and art of ancient Egyptian paintings are still unmatched by any technical recording method of the "soul" to mention. " Pharaoh Akhenaten's almost 20-year-long controversial reign appears in Egyptian history as a "cultural revolution" in theology and art. Typically, the pharoah was represented stylistically with an elongated face with feminized features: full lips, a narrow waist, wide hips, a bulbous belly and thighs, and developing breasts. A few statues also show him sexless. The pharaoh and his wife were also depicted with peculiarly long thin fingers and toes. The king was often accompanied by his family as a tender father and lover of his wife Nefertiti whom he embraced. Other scenes depicted him with his children, six princesses, with whom he played. The royal figures of Akhenaten and his wife were often slightly clothed, sometimes naked. A central reference point of Akhenaten's new religion was the light, represented by the sun. In most pictures, one finds representations of the Aten, the sun god, depicted as a stylized sun disk, whose rays flow in life-giving hands. Nefertiti and various high officials are also shown receiving the presence of the Aten. As high priest and embodiment of the Aten, Akhenaten also wrote a solar hymn, which he dedicated in the grave of Eje (Ay). His sun hymn was identified by the French Egyptologist Urbain Bouriant by closely comparing the Davies' engravings with the archaeology (published 1884; rev. 1908). In addition, five shorter hymns to Aton were identified in the graves of Meryre I, Tutu, Mahu, Ipi (Apy) and No. 23. Seymour de Ricci (1881-1942) was a bibliographer and historian--often of French subjects--who collaborated with Davies' on the text of The Rock Tombs of El-Amarna: The tomb of Meyra (1905) and its continuation with the Tombs of Parennefer, Tutu, and Ay (1908).
