This is now known as the Boveri-Sutton chromosome theory." ..."The Boveri-Sutton chromosome theory (also known as the chromosome theory of inheritance or the Sutton-Boveri theory) is a fundamental unifying theory of genetics which identifies chromosomes as the carriers of genetic material. It correctly explains the mechanism underlying the laws of Mendelian inheritance by identifying chromosomes with the paired factors (particles) required by Mendel's laws. It also states that chromosomes are linear structures with genes located at specific sites called loci along them." Wikipedia Rare books make Fine Gifts. Shipped in new box. Free tracking USA.         The Complete Works of John Lyly

Oxford - At the Clarendon Press, 1902. Oxford - At the Clarendon Press, 1902 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of the works of novelist and poet John Lyly, collected and edited by R. Warwick Bond. Illustrated with frontispieces to each volume. Lyly was best known for his books Euphues, The Anatomy of Wit (1578) and Euphues and His England (1580). Lyly's literary style, originating in his first books, is known as Euphuism. For a time Lyly was the most successful and fashionable of English writers, hailed as the author of a new English, as a raffineur de l'Anglois; and, as Edward Blount, the editor of his plays, tells us in 1632, that beautie in court which could not parley Euphuism was as little regarded as she which nowe there speakes not French. After the publication of Euphues Lyly seems to have entirely deserted the novel form, which was much imitated (e. g. , by Barnabe Rich in his Second Tome of the Travels and Adventures of Don Simonides, 1584), and to have thrown himself almost exclusively into play-writing, probably still with a view to the mastership of revels. Eight plays by him were probably acted before the queen by the Children of the Chapel and especially by the Children of Paul's between the years 1584 and 1591, one or two of them being repeated before a popular audience at the Blackfriars Theatre. Their brisk lively dialogue, classical colour and frequent allusions to persons and events of the day maintained that popularity with the court which Euphues had won. Complete in three volumes. Condition: In a green cloth binding with gilt detailing and protective Brodart wraps. Externally smart, with just some light shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd light patch of foxing. Overall: FINE..

Souvenir. Acis and Galatea Masque of Love

London: The Purcell Operatic Society, 1902. London: The Purcell Operatic Society,, 1902. As Produced at the Great Queen Street Theatre, March 10th, 1902. By Martin Shaw and Gordon Craig. Quarto. Original brown wrappers printed in black. 19 plates by Edward Gordon Craig, of which 1 is tipped-in on brown paper. Wrappers edges a little chipped and toned, short splits to head and tail of backstrip, text leaves faintly toned, some spots and occasional light dampstaining to plates. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Edward Gordon Graig on the front free endpaper. This souvenir booklet was produced to accompany Gordon Craig's second foray into theatre design, the 1902 Purcell Operatic Society production of Acis and Galatea. As the son of superstar actress Ellen Terry, Craig had grown up in the theatre and acted from the time he was a child. During the 1890s he became friends with the artists James Pryde and William Nicholson, who encouraged him to take up wood engraving, which he embraced "wholeheartedly, with a boyish, breathless, energy… This spontaneous, affectionate approach to creativity was an aspect of his character that articulated his entire life, embracing also the tone of his writing and his theatre design" (ODNB). Though he had retired from acting in 1897, Craig still longed for the stage, and was able to combine his theatrical and artistic passions by working as a theatre designer. "His first production, Dido and Aeneas (1900) for the Purcell Society at the Hampstead Conservatoire, was revolutionary… This production was followed by Handel's Acis and Galatea (1902) at the Great Queen Street Theatre, where it was described by Granville Barker as 'an ever-shifting maze of colour, form, and motion'. Haldane McFall observed to Craig that the colours in the first act were 'good enough to eat'" (ODNB). Signed copies of this fragile publication are extremely rare.

Confessioni e Battagli di Giosuè Carducci, Serie prima [Signed/Firmato] [Confessions and Battles, First Series]

Bologna: Nicola Zanichelli, 1902. Bologna: Nicola Zanichelli, 1902. Second edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the second edition bound of Giosuè Carducci's Confessioni e Battagli di Giosue Carducci, Serie prima in half-leather and decorative boards with the decorative paper apparently laid over the prior board covering (some chipping at the spine ends and modest use wear to the joints, rubbing to the board corners and more moderate wear to the board edges, pages age toned, rear hinge cracked), SIGNED BY GIOSUÈ CARCUCCI on the title page; Carducci produced three volumes of his Confessions and Battles published one per year from 1882-1884 in which he defended his anti-Christian sentiments. Carducci was an ardent anti-Christian, goings so far as to author the poem "Inno a Satana" ["Hymn to Satan"], and intentionally blasphemous poem composed as a toast for a dinner party. The poem was provocatively published by the radical Bologna newspaper Il Popolo, to coincide with the 20th Vatican Ecumenical Council. It was during this period of time that ardent Italian republicans were agitating for an end to the Vatican’s domination over the papal states. An influential Poet and considered to be the national Poet of then modern-day Italy, Giosuè Carducci won the 1906 Noble Prize in Literature "not only in consideration of his deep learning and critical research, but above all as a tribute to the creative energy, freshness of style, and lyrical force which characterize his poetic masterpieces". In presenting the Prize to Carducci, C.D. af Wirsén, then the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, mentioned, but glossed over, Carducci's "Confessioni" and focused instead on his Poetry, the work upon which his reputation primarily rests. Signed copies of Carducci's works are quite difficult to find. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY GIOSUÈ CARDUCCI. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Album of Original Watercolor and Ink Designs for Calendars from 1903 to 1907

, 1902-1906 1902-1906. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. Uncommonly clever, colorful manuscript calendar illustrations built around a theme for each of the years. Small folio. 31.5 by 26.5 cm. A total of 29 original watercolors, all dated and signed E.L.P.R. The identity of the artist is otherwise unknown and possibly irretrievable. What is manifest, however, is his skill, humor and panache, and these illustrations stand out among the fluent amateurs of the day, if amateur the artist in fact was. Some of the imagery is decidedly pre-Raphaelite in its style and modeling, while others are more suavely Fin-de-Siecle. Similarities can be found to Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, Burne-Jones, Cecil Aldin, and a host of others, but never is this artist merely imitating. The 1904/1905 series, departing from the calendar format, feature full paintings meant to illustrate one word or short phrase captions such as "Declaration", "Osculation", "Vexation", and these qualify as polished, arresting works of art. The other years have mounted card sheets each covering two months. Typically there is a large watercolor in the center and for 1903, two small ink vignettes for each month. The other years simply present each month in the usual tabular format. These years also have lines of what is presumed to be an original narrative poem which carries through the particular year. The poem is commensurate with the illustration, and it reinforces the cumulative effect of the work. A number of the mounted cards have small neat holes on the top, clearly suggesting that the leaves were once hung on a wall and/or were bound together by a ribbon. Original decorative cloth album.

        The River War

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902. Hardcover. Good. This book is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This is the first one-volume edition of Churchill's second book. It was originally published as a two-volume edition in 1899. In 1902 Churchill (by then a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons. There is also a new Preface. Every one of the many subsequent editions of The River War is based on this 1902 abridged and revised text. Mohammed Ahmed was a messianic Islamic leader in central and northern Sudan in the final decades of the 19th century. Claiming that Allah had selected him as the true Mahdi, he found fertile political ground in the resentment of the inhabitants toward the corruption and oppression by Egyptian rulers who had long dominated the region. Economic and political problems in Egypt further strengthened the Mahdi's hand, enabling his forces and followers to occupy most of the Sudan. In 1883 the Mahdists overwhelmed the Egyptian army of British commander William Hicks, and Great Britain ordered the withdrawal of all Egyptian troops and officials from the Sudan. In 1885, General Gordon famously lost his life in a doomed defense of the capitol, Khartoum, where he had been sent to lead the evacuation of Egyptian forces. Though the Mahdi died in 1895, his theocracy continued until 1898, when General Kitchener reoccupied the Sudan. With Kitchener was a very young Winston Churchill, who would participate in the battle of Omdurman in September 1898, at which the Mahdist forces were decisively defeated. In this book about the British campaign in the Sudan, Churchill was unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of Imperial cynicism and cruelty. The text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. This book offers us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century in a distinctly 19th century world. Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called the last "genuine" cavalry charge by the British army. Because it was significantly revised and because all subsequent editions to date are based on this text, this 1902 first abridged and revised edition is as important and desirable as any in the Churchill canon. This first one-volume edition had only a single printing of just 1,003 copies, and so is considerably scarcer than the first edition. This edition has the same distinctive front cover gilt decoration of the Mahdi's Tomb and gunboat as the first edition, but is bound in red cloth. Here is a worn but original copy in good overall condition. The original binding shows wear to the hinges and extremities, with fraying at points along the hinges and spine ends and overall spine dulling. There is a small black mark across the first "H" in the author's name, overall light soiling, and some discoloration at the upper front and rear covers. The contents remain reasonably bright and retain a stiff, unread feel with modest spotting mostly confined to the first and final pages and page edges. The frontispiece and tissue guard are intact, as are all of the extensive maps and plans. A name inked to the first free endpaper is the sole previous ownership mark we find. The front hinge is a little tender, with a cosmetic split between the first and second free endpapers but the mull is still intact beneath. We have encountered copies with both black and white original endpapers. This copy features white original endpapers. The binding is protected beneath a removable, clear mylar cover.         Confessioni e Battagli di Giosuè Carducci, Serie prima [Signed/Firmato] [Confessions and Battles, First Series]

Bologna: Nicola Zanichelli, 1902.

Autograph Letter Signed with Interesting Notes about South African Tsama (Citron Melon) and a Gratitude to His Correspondent for "your kindly criticism of the Marchesa"].

Cambridge 1902 - Old Mill House, Trumpington, Cambridge, 15 September 1902. Octavo (ca. 20,5x12,5 cm). Brown ink on paper, letterhead of the Mandeville Hotel. Fold marks, otherwise a very good letter. An interesting letter by British traveller, writer and naturalist Francis Guillemard, written to a fellow colleague, with some noteworthy details about tsama, or citron melon. Tsama is native to the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, where it has been traditionally used as a source of water during dry seasons. Guillemard obviously got acquainted with tsama when serving in South Africa as a doctor during the First Boer War (1880-1881). "I was most interested in your information that the tsama grows as far south as Graaf-Reinet [Eastern Cape Province, South Africa]: I had no idea it flourished away from the true desert. I must turn up your reference to Livingstone when I get back to Cambridge. I had forgotten that he mentioned it. My boys could tell at once which were bitter and which sweet melons. As you say, our cucumbers are sometimes bitter (I have an idea that both sweet and bitter come off the same plant, but am not sure of this) but the difference of degree in bitterness is astonishing in the tsama. The fruit seems to be either as bitter as gall or quite tasteless". In the end Guillemard thanks his correspondent "for your kindly criticism of the Marchesa: it is pleasant to get these little appreciatory words". Guillemard "travelled widely, visiting Lapland, the Southern African interior, Madeira and the Canaries, South-East Asia and throughout Europe. He was present at the first Boer War, 1881, and also made visits to Cyprus, founding the Cyprus Exploration Fund. He was elected University Reader in Geography, Cambridge, in 1888, and served as Geographical Editor of the Cambridge University Press. His published works include 'The Life of Ferdinand Magellan and the First Circumnavigation of the Globe, 1480-1521' (London, 1890)." (F.H.H. Guillemard/ Janus: Online catalogue of Cambridge archives and manuscripts). In 1882-1884 he participated in a zoological expedition in the yacht Marchesa, visiting the Far East, the Philippines, New Guinea and most of the chief islands of the Malay Archipelago. He brought back large zoological collections from the voyage and published "The cruise of the Marchesa" in 1886.
