Autograph Letter Signed "C Bemont" [Charles Bemont, French scholar and autograph-collector] to unnamed correspondent [M. Kirkaldy, ref. to "Madame Kirkaldy" within], with Alfred Dreyfus calling card and autograph message and his own card with message

Printed heading 9 Rue du Condé 27 Oct 1902 - Four pages, 12mo (letter), all items in good condition. He will fulfil his promise of some autograph letters, "le plus notable et vivid", which had been relegated to the country but retrieved the day before. He describes a Michelet manuscript, notes taken "après la lecture d'un ouvrage de M. Dupanloup" before he became bishop. He discusses Dupanloup's character and achievements at length. He continues "J'ajoute une lettre . . . Saul Meyer [NOT present] et une carte de visite . . . adressée par le capitaine (ou ex-capitaine) Alfred Dreyfus, il y a un an environ, c'est à dire depuis qu'il a été remis en liberté". He then refers to "Madame Kirkaldy" [correspondent's wife presumably] perhaps being reminded by the autographs of the "bibliothécaire français" she met at the Bodley (Oxford) when she was expecting her third child. He recalls other Oxford experiences of the time (dining at Christ Church etc) and hopes for a meeting to "parler de vos Normands". WITH: Calling card of Alfred Dreyfus (name printed centre) with message under printed name in Dreyfus's hand, "remercie vivement Mr Bemont de som aimable proposition, mais il est inutile de faire faire un tirage a part de | [reverse of card] l'article, puisqu'il l'aura dans la Revue Historiques." Also with: Calling card of Bemont himself, with message [to M. Kirkaldy - another mention of Madame] in his hand, "22 déc. 1902. Cher Monsieur | Voici pour ajouter à votre collection d'autographs. C'est une lettre de grand peintre français, Jules Breton [NOT present] . . . [described, then promising more]". [Attributes: Soft Cover]

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire. Année complète 1902.

Bureaux de la Revue 1902 - - Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1902, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Edition originale. [Manuscript Book]: Suitable Reflections on a Pilgrim's Progress from Bachelordom to What's-to-come. A Serio-Ludicro Tragico-Comico Poem... Being a Faithful Account of Excruciating Sorrow and wherein is particularly shown how the spacious corridors, ante-rooms, back porch and pantry of Bachelor's Hall became damp, moist & unpleasant, from the many divers tears that leaked from umbrella racks and cus-pitoons upon Charles Mac Rae's Resignation. [Alternate title]: An Epithalamium for Bachelors: For Twenty Years a Household Remedy. [Cover title]: Needles and Pins, [Needles and Pins], Open the covers, And Trouble Begins

[No place: The Sign of the Stein. 1902]. First. String-tied wrappers in hand-painted canvas dustwrapper. 32mo. (5" x 4.75"). (16)pp. Light edgewear and rubbing, near fine in near fine dustwrapper with a modest stain on the rear panel. Artist's engraved business card laid in with a manuscript presentation. A wonderful and wonderfully funny hand-lettered and hand-illustrated book by Walter Jack Duncan, celebrating Charles Mac Rae's courtship of his fiancee, his dwindling days of bachelorhood, his impending marriage, and the horrifying spectre of babies, with just the right touch of sophomoric humor one would expect from a talented 21 year old in 1902. Every page is embellished or illustrated in a most pleasing manner reminiscent of W.W. Denslow. Walter Jack Duncan was a noted illustrator born in Indianapolis in 1881. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City with John H. Twachtman, and illustrated for the popular magazines of the period: The Century Magazine, Scribner's, McClure's, and Harper's Monthly Magazine. He also served as an official artist with the A.E.F. during World War I and illustrated many books, including several by Christopher Morley. A lovely production, suitable for reprinting. .

A Dream of Freedom, romance of South America.

      - London, F.V. White 1902. Octavo publisher's illustrated cloth blocked in ochre, white and black; xii,318pp, frontispiece. Some minor browning and signs of use but rather a good copy. Tipped in the front opening is an original photo of Nisbet dated 1901 and a notice of this book. Only edition and rare. And rare in more than one sense. It is the only novel that I know of set in the William Lane led utopia of New Australia and Cosme in Paraguay; in fact it is one of very few contemporary books on the settlement (the only other that I know of is the vitriolic 'Where Socialism Failed'; 1912). Likewise it is one of very few novels set in an actual utopia - or at least an attempt at one. Nisbet's preface is a mildly petulant jab at his critics and sounds a weary note about having written more than forty novels without repeating himself. As his first novel (set in New Guinea) appeared only 14 years earlier it's a not unimpressive achievement on some level. The author of the newspaper notice inserted at the front was alarmed at the implied threat that this could be his last novel and must have been relieved as more novels appeared later the same year. But there weren't many more novels - and they petered out in 1905. In the same month (January 1902) that the freshly widowed Nisbet dates his preface he married a 73 year old widow (20 years his senior); I wonder whether he was writing with the exhaustion of a new burden undertaken or the release from financial strain. A fine set.Walt Whitman (1819-1892), "American journalist, essayist, and poet whose style of writing in such works as Leaves of Grass (first edition, 1855) revolutionized American literature. Such poems as ‘I Sing the Body Electric’ and ‘Song of Myself’ asserted the beauty of the human body, physical health, and sexuality in 1856 the second edition of Leaves of Grass appeared. This collection contained revisions of the poems of the first edition and several new ones All his later volumes of new poems were to be incorporated into successive editions When his brother was wounded at Fredericksburg, Whitman went there in 1862 to care for him. For the rest of the Civil War he spent much time caring for both Union and Confederate soldiers. In May 1865 Drum-Taps showed Whitman’s readers a new kind of poetry, ranging from his early oratorical excitement to his later awareness of the horrors of the war. The Sequel to Drum-Taps, published in the autumn of 1865, contained his great elegy on Lincoln, ‘When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d’" (Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature).Myerson B4.

        Art of Walter Crane

George Bell and Sons, London 1902 - Walter Crane. Hardcover. FIRST TRADE EDITION. This is still the best and most comprehensive work on Crane's art, encompassing his illustrations, paintings, and decorative works. There are 8 photogravure plates, 24 full page colored plates, and over 100 other illustrations of his paintings, wall paper designs, and book illustrations. There are also two inserted facsimile leaves from The Story of the Glittering Plain published by the Kelmscott Press. It was the only Kelmscott Press title illustrated by Crane, despite his close friendship with fellow-Socialist William Morris. The book begins with a chapter discussing Morris's influence on Crane's ideas of Socialism and art. A very good small folio bound in the original blue-green pictorial cloth, with the cover design and spine printed in black and gilt. The covers show wear, with slight fraying at edges, brief spotting, and the front hinge slightly cracked. The interior is quite clean and bright save for some very light aging to margins and a small brown stain on one of the color illustrations and its facing page. Altogether a very nice copy of this rather scarce book. 138 pages. ILL/042210. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Les Systèmes Socialistes. Tome premier - Tome second

Paris, V. Giard & E. Brière 1902 - Two volumes in 8vo.; pp. (4), 406, (2); pp. (4), 492; contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, a bit rubbed at extremities, raised bands, some gilding to spine ends, two contrasting gilt lettering-pieces, decorative endpapers, marbled edges, half title of volume I with some browning and a repaired tear in outer margin, moderate age toning towards edges, else clean and crisp, a very good set. First edition. This is Pareto's second major work and an analysis of various types of socialism. The purpose of this book was to set out considered criticism of liberal beliefs, and therefore of any doctrine based solely on reason. Pareto maintained that socialism took advantage of the desire which every man has of transcending his own state, of imagining new roles for himself and his family, of building castles in the air and rationalizing them, of living in a better world. In this way socialism elaborated on powerful myths and political formulae which could be used to spur the masses into action and, through this action, bring about real changes in every sector of individual and collective life.(New Palgrave III, p. 802).         (Novel): Diane, Priestess of Haiti, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, LXIX, April 1902

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott. 1902. First. First, and apparently only edition. Front wrap detached, and chipped at the bottom corner, as are the edges of the first two pages (both of ads), last page of the novel has a short tear and small chip, as do a few of the following pages, else a sound and readable, good or better copy. This issue contains the only appearance of this complete novel by an African-American author. The novel features a separate title page, prints the author's name and title on the spine, and takes up a significant portion of the magazine (80 of the issue's 128 pages, with the remainder mostly comprising advertisements). Durham (1861-1919), born in Pennsylvania, was the assistant editor of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. In 1891 he was named U.S. Charge d'Affaires to Santo Domingo and U.S. Minister to Haiti, an office that he served until 1893. This novel was not published elsewhere to our knowledge. Individual issues of this magazine are rare -- we have never seen another example of this issue offered for sale. .
