        The River War

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., , 1902. An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to upper board and spine, together with facsimile gilt signature and block of one of Kitchener's Nile gunboats to the upper board, and of the Mahdi's tomb to the spine, black surface-paper endpapers. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Kitchener, 14 coloured maps and plans, 6 of them folding, a further 8 sketch-maps in the text. 40pp. publisher's advertisements at the rear. Very slight fading to spine (but considerably less than usual), very slight rubbing to ends and corners with a very small tear to cloth at head, spotting to edges, end leaves, and somewhat to margins of some inner leaves, still an excellent copy, sound and presenting very well. First one-volume edition, the second overall following the two-volume first edition of October 1899, this one of only 1,003 copies (as such a more scarce edition than the first) published on 15 October 1902. The text had been revised considerably, and a new chapter added describing the ultimate destruction of the khalifa and the end of the war, making Churchill's self-described tale of blood and war "at once accurate and complete." All subsequent editions of The River War are based on the 1902 abridged and revised text. A very smart copy in the original cloth.

Journal of the Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1896-7: Equipped at the Request and Expense of Albert F. Calvert, Esq., F.R.G.S., London, for the purpose of exploring the remaining blanks of Australia

Perth: Government Printer., 1902. Folio, 62 pp., with a large folding lithographic map measuring 890 x 648 mm., an excellent copy half crimson morocco with gilt lettering by Sangorski. Incomprehensible suffering and despair. Official account of the scientific expedition financed by the wealthy English traveller Albert Calvert, dispatched 'for the purpose of exploring the remaining blanks of Australia'.Lawrence Allen Wells (1883-1932) was an Australian born surveyor who rose to prominence for continuing the work of the Elder Scientific Expedition after it collapsed under the leadership of David Lindsay. Accurate and understated, Wells won the esteem of the Adelaide scientific community and attracted the attention of Albert Calvert who insisted that Wells lead his expedition. Accompanied by his cousin Charles Wells and other scientific companions, the Calvert Expedition of 1896 passed through the Murchison goldfields, and headed north to the Fitzroy River. At Midway Well the party split intending to meet at Joanna Spring, some 300 kilometres to the north. The first group led by Wells' cousin perished in the attempt. Unable to locate Joanna Spring (incorrectly mapped by 30 kilometres to the east by Warburton some years earlier) the second group barely survived an incomprehensible 13 day march of some 220 kilometres over sand hills with no water before reaching the safety of Noonkanbah station on the Fitzroy River.

Autograph letter signed in full to "Herr Levy"

. 2-1/3 pp. of a bifolium. Dated [Berlin]-Charlottenburg, January 23, 1902. In German (with transcription and translation). Regarding a recommendation for the director of the Berliner Tonkünstlerorchester, Herr Strunz, and mentioning Strauss's "Singgedicht," Feursnot. Strunz "is looking for some patrons enthusiastic about the arts who could help him materially... Is it very outrageous of me to bother you with this? Since, however, I myself, too, am only guided by purely artistic interest in this enterprise, to which I contribute the greatest sacrifices of time and effort myself, perhaps you will forgive me... I am going to travel to Vienna tomorrow for the premiere of my opera..." Creased at folds; four small file holes to blank inner margins filled in with matching paper just slightly affecting several letters.. We have been unable to identify Strauss's correspondent with certainty, although it is possible that he is the German composer and patron of the arts, Martin Levy (1836-1911). The Berliner Tonkünstlerorchester, an ensemble devoted to contemporary music, was founded by Strauss. Feuersnot ("Fire-Famine"), a "Singgedicht" or "sung poem" in one act to a libretto by Ernst von Wolzogen, was first performed at the Hofoper in Dresden on November 21, 1901; it had its Viennese premiere on January 29, 1902. "Strauss's second operatic essay was a ribald exercise in snook- cocking. His first opera Guntram had suffered a painful fiasco in Munich, his home town, and Feuersnot was his jovial revenge... That Feuersnot should be appreciated only by scholars was the last thing Strauss intended: for the sake of the dewily attractive, well-shaped score, there is a strong case for reinventing its text in terms as rudely up to date as need be."
