Includes Fiske's classic historical works on America, as well as his scientific and philosophical writings. This deluxe edition of Fiske's works was planned and in part prepared before his death in July 1901.

Amerikanskie milliardery. S 16 portretami i prilozheniem stat'i Andr'iu Karnegi: Predubezhdeniia protiv trestov. Perevod s frantsuzskago pod redaksiei A. E. Ianovskago [American billionaires. With sixteen portraits and, as a supplement, Andre Carnegie's essay, "Popular Illusions about Trusts." Translated from the French and edited by A. E. Ianovskii]

St. Petersburg: XX Vek, 1902. Octavo (18.3 × 12.3 cm). Contemporary beige cloth; [4], 379 pp. Sixteen photographic portraits on separate leaves; numerous decorative head pieces and vignettes. Original wrappers perished; stamp of a non-existing lending library to title; else about very good. First and only edition of this sensationalist account of the life of American billionaires of the Gilded Age, supposedly written by a French journalist with exclusive access to the likes of Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Morgan. The supposed author -- according to the preface a former contributor to the journal 'Revue de revues' -- is likely a spurious pseudonym, as we have been unable to trace any French original with this title. The goal of the book is to expose the sheer power and inherent corruptness of the American financial and industrial elites, as demonstrated through descriptions of their business practices, but also their daily lives and intrigues. Chapters are devoted to the "first four hundred" and their families; to the daily life and psychology of the wives and daughters of America's richest; to their eccentricities and other gossip; as well as to their children and the system of lineage. Translated and edited by Abel' E. Ianovskii. The author is particularly critical of the practice of holding companies, or trusts, and the translator has here appended his Russian translation of Andrew Carnegie's essay, "Popular Illusions about Trusts" ("Predubezhdeniia protiv trestov"). Carnegie himself is the subject of the short chapter, "The Steel King." Complete, with all sixteen portraits. Rare; not traced through KVK or OCLC.

Souvenir Acis & Galatea Masque of Love As Produced At the Great Queen Street Theatre, March 10th, 1902

      J. J. Waddington. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1902. Softcover. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Beautiful condition except for paper covers which are missing one corner and taped at spine. Pages are very good. This from the library of a family member Elena Gordon Craig whose name is inscribed on the front blank page. 19 plates by Edward Gordon Craig, one tipped-in on brown paper. First edition, first impression of this souvenir booklet which accompanied Gordon Craig's second entrance into theatre design, the 1902 Purcell Operatic Society production of Acis and Galatea. Craig, who was the son of the great actress Ellen Terry, grew up in the theatre and acted from the time he was a child. In the1890s he became friends with the artists James Pryde and William Nicholson who suggested he that he take up wood engraving. This spontaneous, affectionate approach to creativity was an aspect of his character that articulated his entire life, embracing also the tone of his writing and his theatre design" (ODNB). Though he had retired from acting in 1897, Craig still longed for the stage, and was able to combine his theatrical and artistic passions by working as a theatre designer. "His first production, Dido and Aeneas (1900) for the Purcell Society at the Hampstead Conservatoire, was revolutionary This production was followed by Handel's Acis and Galatea (1902) at the Great Queen Street Theatre, described by Granville Barker as 'an ever-shifting maze of colour, form, and motion'. Haldane McFall was supposed to have commented that the colors were good enough to eat. This copy includes 19 plates of theatre and costume designs by Gordon Craig from the beginning of his legendary career as a theatre designer .

Volume II with photogravure frontispiece - the Attack on Peiwar Kotal - and a similar portrait, title page vignette, three steel engraved and six half-tone plates, three folding maps and a folding panorama. The result. is that he shows love and respect for India and things Indian?; Jain 974; Riddick 401. A runaway bestseller, Roberts' memoirs ran to eight editions in the first month of publication and evidently to thirty-five in four years. This copy inscribed on the half-title of Volume I, ?Mrs. Lucas-Tooth with kindest regards and best wishes from the Author F.M. Lord Roberts, June 1908.? The recipient was most likely Everild Lucas-Tooth, daughter of Sir Edward Durand and wife of Selwyn Lucas Lucas-Tooth. Copies of Roberts's memoirs rarely turn up so fully inscribed.

Land-Grant Railway across Central Australia. The Northern Territory of the State of South Australia as a Field for Enterprise and Capital. Boundless Resources: Pastoral, Agricultural, Mineral. Natural Harbors. Navigable Rivers.... With Illustrations, Maps and Copy of the Act of Parliament authorising Construction of Railway

Adelaide, printed by Hussey and Gillingham for the South Australian Government, 1902. Foolscap folio, [i], 120 pages with 20 numbered illustrations and a full-page frontispiece plus a very large folding colour geological map (in two sections, 660 x 730 mm and 650 x 730 mm) and a very large folding map of Australia (615 x 805 mm, showing the approximate route of the proposed Transcontinental Railway, from Oodnadatta to Pine Creek). Original flush-cut quarter cloth and papered boards lettered in gilt on the front cover; spine a little sunned; corner tips lightly worn; leading edge a little marked; an excellent copy. The full title of the two-part map is 'Geological Map of the Northern Territory of South Australia ... by H.Y.L. Brown FGS, Government Geologist. Physical Geography, compiled by C. Winnecke FRGS, from private and official records. Adelaide, 1898'. Just over half the book (pages 24-84) is devoted to 'Extracts from Journals of Explorers, Travellers, and Others'; in chronological order after John McDouall Stuart come Gosse, Ernest Giles, Barclay, Knight, J.A. Giles, Favenc, Favenc and Crawford, Alfred Giles, Newland, Winnecke, Lindsay, Tietkens, the Horn Expedition (under Winnecke), Davidson, Carrington ... to say nothing of the various pastoralists, overlanders and travellers represented. We have handled a slightly variant copy before; the text of the Transcontinental Railway Act ended at page 120, and it did not have the unnumbered page of text facing the title page (a copy of the announcement, dated 10 December 1902, calling for tenders for construction of the railway). Rare in our experience.

One of the larger bindings to be produced by the Guild. Letterpress by G P Warner, title page designed by Temple Ovenston. There is a pencil note on the rear blank end paper that indicates the binders "des. Gdg," is given, referring to the finisher. Illustrated by Howard Penton. First Edition. 64 plates mounted onto tabs. 15pp of text describing the illustrations. 4to. (13 x 9 inches).
