Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Gustav Mahler").

Wien, 21. I. 1902.. 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt mit Adresse am Gegenblatt verso. Kl.-4to..

Archive collection, consisting of preliminary studies and drafts for his magnum opus "Geschlecht und Charakter" ("Sex and Character") as well as for "Eros und Psyche", together with notes and autobiographical writings.

[Vienna], c. 1899-1902. - Altogether c. 700 pp., mainly written in Weininger's meticulous handwriting, but also including some more perfunctory pages in Latin script, some shorthand. Numerous corrections and deletions. Some browning and wrinkling, occasional paper flaws to edges. Various formats, but mostly 4to (34 x 21 cm), as well as a few pieces in-8vo and small formats. Well preserved altogether. Extensive and previously unknown partial estate of the ill-fated Austrian philosopher. Of outstanding importance for a scholarly study of the textual development of Weininger's principal work as well as for the biography of the controversial philosopher. The present collection mainly comprises preliminary studies and working drafts for his dissertation "Eros und Psyche", as well as for "Geschlecht und Charakter" ("Sex and Character"), the notorious magnum opus which he expanded from his dissertation. Also included are numerous citations and excerpts from Weininger's literary studies, several library order slips, some exercise books and letters, a portrait, and a short autobiographical statement, as well as his father's written permission that Otto learn how to handle a gun. - Weininger's major work, a precocious study of the relationship of sex and character which earned the author his Ph.D. degree, was dismissed at first but gained immediate popularity after he shot himself at the age of 23. The work remains a key document of Vienna fin-de-siècle thinking. In spite of his rabid misogyny and antisemitism, Weininger was considered genius by the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein as well as the writer August Strindberg.

Uniformly bound in later dark green quarter morocco over cream linen boards, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered to three panels and decorated to the others. Profusely illustrated throughout. A very good set. One of the great historical and topographical descriptions of London. Besant was commissioned to compile the survey in the 1890s, under-supported by the publishers who "relied too much on Besant's talents and money - both already hopelessly over-stretched". The set was published posthumously between 1902 and 1912.

        Daphnis et Chloe

1902. BONNARD, Pierre. Daphnis et Chloe. By Longus. [x], 294 pp. Illustrated with 151 lithographs printed in black by Bonnard. 4to., bound in full green morocco by Creuzevault, in a matching slipcase. Paris: Ambroise Vollard, 1902. |~||~||~||~||~| A fine copy of Bonnard's second great book, a work that has spent over a century in the shadow of its more famous predecessor Parallèlement. Although unappreciated at the time of publication (as was Parallèlement), "the book today is considered one of the finest of the period" (Garvey, The Artist and the Book, p. 26). Vollard originally planned to publish the book accompanied by woodcuts by Maurice Denis. However, Bonnard became enthralled with the book and produced his illustrations at great speed, which resulted in them being chosen by Vollard. Unlike the radical layout of Parallèlement, Daphnis and Chloe reverts to a more formal style of layout without any reduction of the impact of the illustrations. This is an exceptionally fine copy, with a hint of rubbing on the hinges, free from the foxing which mars so many copies, and in an elegant, restrained binding by Creuzevault. PROVENANCE: Francis Kettaneh with his ex-libris. Francis Bouvet, Bonnard. The Complete Graphic Work 75. The Artist and the Book 28. Rauch 22. Rewald, Pierre Bonnard 145. Terrasse 42.

"Richard Strauß und der Symbolismus". Eigenh. Manuskript mit U.

      O. O. u. D.. 13 SS. auf 13 num. Bll. Folio..

Oblong 8vo., plates measure 210 x 140 mm, binding in original black cloth. Rochester: Vredenburg & Co., n.d. [ca. 1902].         Journal of the Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1896-7: Equipped at the Request and Expense of Albert F. Calvert, Esq., F.R.G.S., London, for the purpose of exploring the remaining blanks of Australia

Government Printer., Perth 1902 - Folio, 62 pp., with a large folding lithographic map measuring 890 x 648 mm., an excellent copy half crimson morocco with gilt lettering by Sangorski. Incomprehensible suffering and despair. Official account of the scientific expedition financed by the wealthy English traveller Albert Calvert, dispatched 'for the purpose of exploring the remaining blanks of Australia'.Lawrence Allen Wells (1883-1932) was an Australian born surveyor who rose to prominence for continuing the work of the Elder Scientific Expedition after it collapsed under the leadership of David Lindsay. Accurate and understated, Wells won the esteem of the Adelaide scientific community and attracted the attention of Albert Calvert who insisted that Wells lead his expedition. Accompanied by his cousin Charles Wells and other scientific companions, the Calvert Expedition of 1896 passed through the Murchison goldfields, and headed north to the Fitzroy River. At Midway Well the party split intending to meet at Joanna Spring, some 300 kilometres to the north. The first group led by Wells' cousin perished in the attempt. Unable to locate Joanna Spring (incorrectly mapped by 30 kilometres to the east by Warburton some years earlier) the second group barely survived an incomprehensible 13 day march of some 220 kilometres over sand hills with no water before reaching the safety of Noonkanbah station on the Fitzroy River.         The River War

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., , 1902. An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to upper board and spine, together with facsimile gilt signature and block of one of Kitchener's Nile gunboats to the upper board, and of the Mahdi's tomb to the spine, black surface-paper endpapers. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Kitchener, 14 coloured maps and plans, 6 of them folding, a further 8 sketch-maps in the text. 40pp. publisher's advertisements at the rear. Very slight fading to spine (but considerably less than usual), very slight rubbing to ends and corners with a very small tear to cloth at head, spotting to edges, end leaves, and somewhat to margins of some inner leaves, still an excellent copy, sound and presenting very well. First one-volume edition, the second overall following the two-volume first edition of October 1899, this one of only 1,003 copies (as such a more scarce edition than the first) published on 15 October 1902. The text had been revised considerably, and a new chapter added describing the ultimate destruction of the khalifa and the end of the war, making Churchill's self-described tale of blood and war "at once accurate and complete." All subsequent editions of The River War are based on the 1902 abridged and revised text. A very smart copy in the original cloth.

Perth: Government Printer., 1902. Folio, 62 pp., with a large folding lithographic map measuring 890 x 648 mm., an excellent copy half crimson morocco with gilt lettering by Sangorski.
