John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1902 - 1902 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition

1902. Hi, This lot is an 1902 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the seventh year of the hardback and a year I have found hard to find recently, especially in this condition. The front board is very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, one tiny mark to the top, the rear board is near perfect and the spine gilt is very bright and original. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. The only downside and it is a bit picky is there is a tiny indentation to the edge of the rear board where a band has been around it. A rare Wisden in superb condition (++) and a very nice price.

        The Hound of the Baskervilles

London: George Newnes, 1902 First edition, first printing, with "you" for "your" on p. 13. Illustrated by Sidney Paget. Publisher's decorative red cloth binding designed by Alfred Garth Jones, ruled and titled in gilt with a hound's silhouette stamped in black, surrounded by a gilt floral design; lacking dust jacket. A very good copy, slightly shaken, with some sunning to spine and light wear to extremities, light foxing to top edge, front hinge very slightly starting at half-title, front pastedown with contemporary ownership signature and residue of now-removed label and rubber stamp, front free endpaper with small blind-stamp. Overall, an attractive copy with a clean text block and a bright, decorative binding. Green and Gibson A26. The Hound of the Baskervilles is Doyle's third novel to feature the well-known detective character Sherlock Holmes. Though the author had intended his second Holmes novel, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894), to be the last, he continued the story into a third book after public demand, despite the ending of the second, in which Holmes falls to his death in the concluding story, "The Final Problem." The most popular of the Holmes cannon, The Hound of the Baskervilles purports to be an episode earlier in the detective's career, prior in chronology to "The Final Problem." The story tells of a murder mystery at the Baskerville Hall country house that involves the Baskerville family's superstition surrounding a hellhound myth. The plot was largely inspired by Doyle's golfing holiday at Cromer in Norfolk in the spring of 1901, where he spent time with a young journalist friend named Bertram Fletcher Robinson, who told Doyle a legend about a haunting ghost hound in the moors of Dartmoor. Like his previous two Holmes novels, The Hound of the Baskervilles is illustrated in black and white by Sidney Paget. Alfred Garth Jones (1872-1955) was an English artist, illustrator, and book designer whose style is hallmarked by his bold, thick lines and his Art Nouveau aesthetic. Trained in both Manchester and Paris, Jones created many types of book art, including illustrations, bookplates, binding designs, and page decorations. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

        The Discourses of Epictetus.

London George Bell & Sons 1902 - 2 volumes, 8vo., translated by George Long, edition limited to 250 copies on handmade paper, titles in red and black, later half navy morocco over marbled boards gilt by Bumpus, matching endpapers, top edge gilt and others uncut, a fine set. Epictetus (55–135 A. D., was an exponent of Stoicism who flourished about four hundred years after the Stoic school of Zeno of Citium was established in Athens. He lived and worked, first as a student in Rome, and then as a teacher with his own school in Nicopolis in Greece. Our knowledge of his philosophy and his method as a teacher comes to us via two works composed by his student Arrian, the Discourses and the Handbook. Although Epictetus based his teaching on the works of the early Stoics (none of which survives) which dealt with the three branches of Stoic thought, logic, physics and ethics, the Discourses and the Handbook concentrate almost exclusively on ethics. The role of the Stoic teacher was to encourage his students to live the philosophic life, whose end was eudaimonia ('happiness' or 'flourishing'), to be secured by living the life of reason, which – for Stoics – meant living virtuously and living 'according to nature'. The eudaimonia ('happiness') of those who attain this ideal consists of ataraxia (imperturbability), apatheia (freedom from passion), eupatheiai ('good feelings'), and an awareness of, and capacity to attain, what counts as living as a rational being should. The key to transforming oneself into the Stoic sophos (wise person) is to learn what is 'in one's power', and this is 'the correct use of impressions' (phantasiai), which in outline involves not judging as good or bad anything that appears to one. For the only thing that is good is acting virtuously (that is, motivated by virtue), and the only thing that is bad is the opposite, acting viciously (that is, motivated by vice). Someone who seeks to make progress as a Stoic (a prokoptôn) understands that their power of rationality is a fragment of God whose material body – a sort of rarefied fiery air – blends with the whole of creation, intelligently forming and directing undifferentiated matter to make the world as we experience it. The task of the prokoptôn, therefore, is to 'live according to nature', which means (a) pursuing a course through life intelligently responding to one's own needs and duties as a sociable human being, but also (b) wholly accepting one's fate and the fate of the world as coming directly from the divine intelligence, which makes the world the best that is possible.       1902 - London: Grant Richards, 1902. Original blue cloth. First Edition of Masefield's first book, which consisted of only 500 copies. Encouraged by Yeats and with the title chosen by the publisher, Masefield quit his bank job and decided to try his hand at nautical verse (and (later) prose. The title unfortunately led to comparisons with Kipling and his "Barrack-Room Ballads" (whose verse Masefield "hated") -- especially as both poets used the vernacular in their ballads. (Incidentally the publisher went bankrupt just two years later -- though most of the copies wrere by then sold.) In Masefield's opening poem "he proclaimed that he had no intention of glorifying heroism or imperialism; his concern was with the outcasts, the despised, the despairing" [Babington Smith]. Sadly, though Masefield would live 65 more years, SALT-WATER BALLADS is regarded by most as his best work; it includes his best-known poem, "Sea-Fever" (which in subsequent printings, includes the word "go" in the famous opening couplet "I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky.").~This copy is about as fine as this book gets (very light foxing on a few leaves); atypically, the spine of this copy is not discolored. Simmons 1; Wight 1; Handley-Taylor p. 27. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: George Newnes, 1902.. FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.359. With 16 illustrated plates by Paget. Bound in publisher's decorative red cloth, showing silhouette of the hound against a skyline in black and gilt to front board, gilt titles to spine. In a leather-spined clamshell case. Internally clean and free from marks and spotting. Text-block is tight and sound, slightly cocked, one gathering standing slightly proud. Spine sunned, bumping to corners, spine ends bumped with a little fraying. Arguably Holmes' most charismatic case, and one which has consequently been adapted for stage and screen numerous times - and only about half of those times as a parody.

He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year 1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region.Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum, Library of Congress, the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Taft, and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston, Mark Twain, Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson.Artist and historian, Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) was a pioneer etcher and producer of fine press books who treated a vast array of subjects, including Texas and the Southwest. Historians of fine press printing have compared him to William Blake. This collection of Wall's scrapbooks, publications, and correspondence was built by collector Natalie Williams of Marshall, Texas.
