Die Dipsomanie - eine klinische studie (thèse d'agrégation) COPY INSCRIBED BY SMITH ELY JELLIFFE

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Some browning and chipping especially in first volume, rear flyleaf loose, embossed library stamp on titles of both volumes. Library bookplate and withdrawal stamp; modern bookplate. First Edition of Vols. I – II of the Trabajos de Laboratorio de investigaciones biologicas de la Universidad de Madrid, containing the first printings of several of Ramon y Cajal’s key papers on the human cerebral cortex. Established in 1901 and funded by the Spanish government, the Trabajos was the successor to Ramon y Cajal’s Revista trimestral micrografica, the periodical he had founded in 1897 to publish his neurological researches and those of his pupils at the University of Madrid. Volume I of the Trabajos consists of six papers by Ramon y Cajal, four of which—“Estructura de la corteza olfativa del hombre y mamíferos,” “Textura del lóbulo olfativo accesorio,” “Estructura del septum lucidum,” and “Sobre un ganglio especial de la corteza esfeno-occipital”—were translated into English and published together as Studies on the Cerebral Cortex (Limbic Structures) (1955). Volume II contains an additional eight papers by Ramon y Cajal, together with four by other authors. These papers were some of the first fruits of Ramon y Cajal’s researches on the human cerebral cortex undertaken in 1879-1900, in which he used advanced staining techniques to “[describe] and [classify] the various types of neurons in such a way, he believed, as to permit the ascribing of specific structural patterns to different areas of the cortex; hence he was able to place the concept of cerebral localization on firm histological foundations. His descriptions of the cerebral cortex are still the most authoritative” (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Garrison-Morton.com 1428.1

Cinq Années de Ma Vie 1894-1899

McClure, Phillips & Co., New York 1901 - 2 p.l. & 212 pages; A remarkably rare and legally significant copy of the 1901 memoirs by Alfred Dreyfus, the French Army officer at the heart of a cruel forgery and subsequent miscarriage of justice known as the "Dreyfus Affair" -- which has reverberated around the civilized world from 1894, when Dreyfus was falsely accused of treason to France, right through to the present day. This copy was never published in any usual sense, nor was it ever offered for sale to the public. In this case, the old saying is incorrect -- one can judge from the cover that this book is different, and special. The front cover has the two-tone cloth and decorative gilt-stamped title (in English), of the normal edition published by McClure, Phillips in New York. But the spine is nearly a half-inch thinner than normal, and has a neatly-handwritten title in French written in ink at the head -- [substituted for the usual U. S. trade edition of the English translation, which displayed a title lettered in gilt, all in capital letters: FIVE / YEARS / OF / MY LIFE / [Fleur de lys device in gilt] ALFRED / DREYFUS / and at bottom McCLURE / PHILLIPS / & CO"]. This made-up French text edition is one of two copies legally filed for copyright at the Library of Congress with the following physical marks in evidence of this remarkable fact: The paper Library of Congress label is mounted with glue to the lower spine -- the LC Classification "DC" is printed, the rest ("354 / D78") is supplied in ink ms. along with the notation at the bottom of the label - "Copy 2". The Library of Congress, "Copyright Deposit" bookplate is mounted to the front paste-down, with penciled class and book numbers repeated from the label on the spine, and the note: "Copy 2". The (blank) front free-endpaper facing this bookplate has the modern Library of Congress "Surplus-Duplicate" stamp in blue ink, (making this copy legally possible to buy and sell). The title page has a perforated stamp: "LIBRARY OF CONGRESS" (there is also an ink stamp in small blue letters: "L. of C." at the foot of page 99). On the copyright page (the verso of the title page), there is a rectangular ink stamp reading: "The Library of Congress | Two Copies Received | April 24 1901 | Copyright Entry | (The Date is repeated and the Class and Number for copyright, different from the Class and book numbers entered on the label, are handwritten in ink) | At the bottom of this retangular stamp is the stamped notation COPY B" There is also, at the foot of this page, a penciled notation with the Class and Book number repeated in pencil, and this is now crossed through with a diagonal line. Finally, the date "APR 24 1901" is also inkstamped at the head of the rear free endpaper. (On the blank recto of this leaf, there is another date stamped in ink: "May. 9. 1901" The verso of the title page has two statements and three short paragraphs which explain what this remarkable copy represents. "Copyright, 1901, By August F. Jaccaci. / Copyright, 1901, By McClure, Phillips, & Co." The first man named, August Florian Jaccaci, was born in Fontainebleau, France in 1856. After traveling extensively in various countries including Mexico and Cuba, he settled in the United States in the early 1880s. He worked briefly as an artist in the Midwest, creating murals on commission, including a mural in the Capitol building in St. Paul, Minnesota. Jaccaci then moved to New York City and worked as art editor for Century magazine (where S. S. McClure was also briefly employed). He became art editor of 'McClure's Magazine' at its founding in 1896. Evidently, S. S. McClure referred to himself, Jacacci, and his partner John Phillips as "The Three Muskeeteers" in the founding of McClure's Magazine. Jaccaci evidently "induced" Alfred Dreyfus to write these memoirs and made the business arrangements for publication in several languages in 1901. It should be noted that Samuel Sidney McClure's first publishing business was McClure's Syndicate (1884), which [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Theatre. Illustrated Monthly Magazine. The 1st 42 volumes comprising 1901 through 1925 complete.

New York:: Meyer Bros. & Co. & The Theatre Magazine Co.,. 1901-1925.. Hardcover. Very good overall. An almost unobtainable run of this high quality magazine, which provides extensive coverage of performers and productions on the New York stage in the early 20th Century. It also gives a window into the cultural landscape, particularly fashion, opera, vaudeville and early motion pictures. Each issue includes superb colored images for front cover portraits of leading players (usually actresses) of the day as well as color back cover ads. It is a photo-rich publication. This copy possibly inscribed by Noel Coward to Thomas Quinn Curtis. It is inscribed on the ffep of Volume 1; "To Tom Curtis for his prenatal Memories. Noel. Creperal (sp?) 73". Thomas Curtiss was the theater critic for the International Herald Tribune and other newspapers, based in Paris for over 50 years. The signature is not identical to earlier ones, but this would be a late signature, shortly before his death in March 1973. Certainly, the two would have known each other, considering their involvement in the theater and the cultural scene at the time. OCLC: 5589695 describes the publication as monthly from 1901 to 1917, starting with [Vol. 1], no. 3 (May 1901). OCLC: 558986926 describes the series to 1931. It was first published as "Our Players' Gallery", published in 2 issues as Vol. 1, no. 1 (Oct. 1900)-vol. 2, no. 1 (Jan.-Feb. 1901) as OCLC: 10991846. These are not present in this bound edition, but this copy does include "Our Players' Gallery" Edition de Luxe," published by Meyer Bros. & Co in 1901, 32pp with "Over 100 Portraits of Stage Celebrities." This is NOT located in OCLC, title page loose.) Each volume contains an index, Vol.1 also indexes the "Our Players' Gallery". The exquisite front and back covers are works of art. Although listed as "photographs", they are printed on rag paper in 12 colors and more resemble luminous paintings. Some of the artists include Ira S. Hill, Otto Sarony & Arnold Genthe. The advertisements are often for cigarettes and flash cars. 42 volumes, small folio, the early years contained in one volume with 12 issues of between 16-34pp & b&w covers, progressing to two volumes per year, each with six monthly issues of approximately 34pp and 20pp of adverts with chromolithographed front & back covers and chromolithographed portraits. The covers and sometimes internal pages are printed on rag paper in full color; the interior pages are printed on glossier paper stock in black & white. Uniformly bound in publishers green decorated buckram with art nouveau border on front board. Some spines a little bit browned but boards. Inscription on the front inside board of volume one (inside hinge paper somewhat cracked) otherwise all bindings very firm. An advertisement for the magazine in Life Magazine in 1907 indicates the tremendous cost of the magazine. It quotes the 1901-02-03-04-05-06-07 volume for $25, $18, $15, $10, $6, $5 & $7 respectively, "A Book for Your Parlor Table, 12 color plates, 1,500 engravings... The Handsomest Magazine Published, The most sumptuously illustrated the most splendidly printed, full of anecdotes, reminiscences and stories of stage-life." (Life, Vol. 50). We have to agree with that description.

        Undine and Aslauga's Knight

London: George Newnes Ltd. The Caxton Series, 1901. Limited Edition. First Edition Thus. Full Decorative Calf. Cloth Box. Near Fine. One of 25 copies printed on Japanese vellum and signed by illustrator Harold Nelson, with a stunning Cedric Chivers of Bath Art Nouveau-styled binding whose centerpiece is a leather relief and intarsia image. 8vo. 20 by 13.5 cm. xiii, 192 pp. With 12 illustrations, in a Medievalist style akin to the work of Beardsley, and additional decorative devices. It is the highly decorative yet sublime Art Nouveau full calf binding, above all else, that makes this copy special. Decoratively one finds typical Art Nouveau ornamentation -- languid bending lines, rising from and resolving themselves in geometric floral devices and the like, a verticality, etc. Ornamental effects are in gilt and/or blindstamped. The box comes in a plain cloth box, which served to protect it. The pictorial leather work is of course the piece-de-resistance. LIght wear along the joints. A few dark spots along the edges. Light foxing on a few tissue guards. The box has the title crudely written by hand on the side. General moderate wear to this box.

Ferdinand von Reznicek: Am Busen der Natur (Originalzeichnung)

1901 - Tusche, Farbstift und Deckweiß auf Karton. 40 x 23,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert. Veröffentlicht: Simplicssimus. Jahrgang 6 (1901), Heft 23, Seite 181. First on the Antarctic Continent,

London: George Newnes, Limited,, 1901. Being an Account of the British Antarctic Expedition 1898-1900. Octavo. Original blue diagonally-ribbed cloth, titles and vignette of author on skis gilt to spine, front cover lettered in gilt and decorated with large gilt and silver block of the Southern Cross in pack ice, top edge gilt, fore edge untrimmed, black coated endpapers. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of the author with facsimile signature and laid-in tissue guard, numerous photogravures in the text (18 full-page), 3 coloured folding maps. Spine slightly sunned, a few very small nicks to spine-ends, tips bumped, mild spotting towards top edge of half-title, very light offsetting and marginal foxing to title, small mark to bottom edge of sig. T2 not affecting text, leaves partly unopened. An excellent copy. First edition, first-issue binding. Rare presentation copy of this uncommon and attractively produced polar title, inscribed "To Mr Moberly Bue, with the author's compliments. March 8th 1901" on the half-title. Financed by the publisher Sir George Newnes, the Southern Cross expedition "laid claim to a number of 'firsts': the first time dogs were used on the Antarctic continent, a furthest south record, the first sledge journey on the Ross Ice Shelf ?[and today] best remembered as having discovered the northward movement of the Ross Ice Shelf and the emperor penguin rookery at Cape Crozier" (Taurus). Borchgrevink probably did not get the credit that he deserved as Sir Clements Markham and the geographical establishment were dismissive of his rather journalistic account, and their "attention was focussed on Scott's forthcoming expedition" (Howgego). It was not until 1930, just four years before his death, that Borchgrevink received the RGS Patron's Medal.

        FROM BEHIND THE VEIL .

Published for the Author by Christian Publishing Company [1901]., St. Louis - Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-xiv 15-419 [420: blank], original maroon cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold, rear panel stamped in blind. First edition? "Lost race novel set in pre-Columbian Central America among the Chichimecs and Toltecs. The former are postulated to be survivors of Atlantis. Oddly enough, all the characters in the novel have English names (Winnie, Edmond, Oscar, Stonewall, etc.); and they speak and act like characters in a Victorian society romance. The heroine has not two but three rivals. This story is spliced together with a rather opaque adventure story about conflict between the Chichimecs and the Toltecs. The most overtly fantastic feature of the book relates to a lake high up in the mountains, whose depths conceal a strange monster generated from the slain bodies and reincarnated souls of vanquished Chichimecs warriors, ingloriously dumped into the lake by their enemies, the evil Toltecs. The natives have a fear of the lake and avoid it. Once every century, the monster rises and frolics in the sunshine for a period of time, then returns quietly to its Stygian prison. The story is told within a double frame narrative: American campers discover a cave in which are found the remains of a Spanish priest who translated the story from the Toltec language into Spanish, which manuscript is then translated by the campers into English. The priest states that the original story was composed in 1005 A.D. Why 11th century Toltecs (or Chichimecs) would compose a Victorian novel, complete with English names and English mores, is nowhere explained. Perhaps these ex-Atlanteans were time travelers. Imagining so would help relieve what is otherwise an extremely dull (though rare) book." - Robert Eldridge. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Not in Eichner, Atlantean Chronicles. The Stuart Teitler Collection of Lost Race Fiction, p. 8 (recording this edition). Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 A-323 (recording a Salem, Mo. edition of 1901). Some damp staining to cloth and edges of text block, lower right corners bruised, a good, sound copy of an uncommon book. (#149485) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
