EXTRA! Alaska Forum. September 1, 1901

Rampart, Alaska:: The Forum Publishing Co.,. 1901.. Folio: 15" x 11". 1st printing. 4 pp. 4 columns of text under masthead.. Two leaves split along fold. Paper yellowing, as to be expected.. Discrete reinforcement to second leaf edges. 1.5" vertical tear to. lower margin of 2nd leaf [no loss]. Withal, a VG example.. The "Alaska Forum" a relatively short lived newspaper [Sept. 27, 1900 - Aug. 4, 1906] that sprang up to serve the many folk who invaded the small native town of Rampart City in an attempt to make their riches during the Yukon Gold rush of the late 1890s. & & This particular supernumerary publication issued as a promotional 'come hither' for the region, for as the Editor states, "It is the attention of the publishers of the ALASKA FORUM, by means of this special issue, to bring the attention of people in the Eastern states the claim of Rampart City, Alaska, as the gold mining center of this Territory. To that end thousands of copies of the FORUM are being distributed over New England and the Eastern States." & & Herein the Editor splashes numerous headlines across the copy [e.g., :A Rich Discovery! Made on Rhode Island Creek" or "Two Sections - Full of Gold - Easy to Reach"] announcing the many good 'finds' still being found, obviously in an effort to lure more people to the area, which, in fact, had reached the apex of its notoriety. & & Despite Wingate's efforts, a scant two years after this issue, Rampart City, depleted of its prospector population who had decamped for other fields, had shrunk back to its native, pre-Gold Rush size. & & A rare item documenting divers aspects of the Yukon Gold Rush.

Zur Theorie des Gesetzes der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum.Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1900. First edition.

Rare first printing, and a fine copy, of the founding document of quantum theory, "marking the dividing line between classical and modern physics" (Norman). In this celebrated first announcement of quantum theory, Planck derived his radiation law based upon the assumption that energy is emitted and absorbed in discrete quanta. Dibner 166; PMM 391; Horblit/Grolier 26a; Evans 47; Sparrow 162.<br/><br/> "In this important paper he stated that energy flowed not in continuous, indefinitely divisible currents, but in pulses or bursts of action [or quanta]" (Dibner). Planck determined a unit of energy in a system showing a natural frequency in definite quanta and proposed a constant of angular momentum, the value of which is known as 'Planck's constant.' This unit of energy enabled the explanation of wave-length, specific heat of solids, photo-chemical effects of light, the orbits of electrons in the atom, the wave lengths of the lines of the spectrum, or Röntgen rays, the velocity of rotating gas molecules, and the distances between the particles of a crystal. "It contradicted the mechanics of Newton and the electromagnetics of Faraday and Maxwell. Moreover it challenged the notion of the continuity of nature" (PMM). <br/><br/> "Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics, but his fame rests primarily on his role as originator of the quantum theory. This theory revolutionized our understanding of atomic and subatomic processes, just as Albert Einstein's theory of relativity revolutionized our understanding of space and time. Together they constitute the fundamental theories of 20th-century physics. Both have forced man to revise some of his most cherished philosophical beliefs, and both have led to industrial and military applications that affect every aspect of modern life" (Roger H. Stuewer, Britannica). <br/><br/> Published by the Berlin Physics Society, the first appearance of Planck's revolutionary work is very rare. (It was later published, in 1901, in the more widely distributed Annalen der Physik).. In: Verhandlungen der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesselschaft im Jahre 1900, Zeiter Jahrgang, pp. 237-245. The entire volumes 2 and 3 offered here in a fine contemporary cloth binding with gilt spine lettering, 4to (221 x 147 mm), pp. vi, 260; vi 228

"[The] author has given a comprehensive, thorough, and extremely scholarly treatment to the entire field of Mexican law. Approaching his coverage first with a historical survey, Pallares discusses the heritage of Mexican legal thought from the mother country, the evolution of national institutions and law from the commencement of independent life, and then follows up in great detail on the codified and statutory fields in separate chapters. Doctrinal discussion of subjects of legal philosophy and jurisprudence has enhanced the academic nature of this work as a reference source." A second edition was published in 1904.         THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON

1901. [the true first edition, FINE] With Many Pictures by E. Hering. Indianapolis: The Bowen-Merrill Company, n.d. [1901]. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition (American), preceding the London edition by about a month. To quote from Smith&#39;s biography:~...the moon has long had a leading place in the minds and myths of humans. Jules Verne had written one such fantasy in the 1880s [sic - actually 1865] in his VOYAGE TO THE MOON, but Wells was not satisfied with the science in that book... he [Wells] described it [THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON] as an &#39;imaginative spree&#39;, and said &#39;it is probably the writer&#39;s best "scientific romance".&#39; One of the reasons it is the best of Wells&#39;s work based on science is that all the scientific aspects -- gravity on the moon, the impact of the sun on the moon&#39;s surface, and even what the surface might be like -- were... [verified with] leading experts in astronomy, astronomical physics, and other disciplines to ensure that the book was accurate, within the bounds of knowledge and theory of that time.~THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON was Wells&#39;s first book to be turned into a movie (in 1919 -- remade in 1964). And ever since 1969 this was the book that collectors asked Neil Armstrong to sign.~This is a remarkably fine, bright copy of this attractively-produced book. This has become a difficult Wells science fiction title to find in acceptable condition. Wells Soc. 18; Hammond B7; Currey p. 518. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case.

[Original Calligraphic Manuscript of:] TO HOPE

[London: Percy J. Smith, April 1901].. 7 leaves, recto and verso. 12mo (15 x 11.5 cm). In black ink, with red titling, ornaments and initials, on paper (watermarked "O.W.P. & A.O.L."). Bound in stiff vellum, with hand-lettered title on upper board. Vellum a trifle soiled, very good or better. Folding case. An original calligraphic rendering of Keats&#39;s poem by the skilled calligrapher, typographer, painter, etcher and artist of the Great War. Smith studied at Camberwell College of Arts & Crafts under Edward Johnson. He served in the Great War with the Royal Marine Artillery at the Western Front in France and later Belgium, an experience from whence came his remarkable series of etchings depicting trench combat. He established the Dorian (later Dorno) Workshop & Studio, served as a consultant to Heinemann, and specialized in typographic design. He continued to pursue his work as a visual artist alongside his career as typographer and calligrapher. Among his most notable projects was the four year commission for the lettering of the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge. He was a Fellow or member of a number of professional societies of artists, as well as of the Society of Calligraphers and the Double Crown Club. This manuscript dates from quite early on in his career and may have been a project while he was a student. It is expressly dated and signed in the form of a colophon. The front free endsheet bears pencil identifications, as well as Smith&#39;s address, in an unknown hand. Smith&#39;s calligraphic manuscript appear to be uncommon in commerce: ABPC records one sale, that of a 1907 rendering of selections from Shakespeare, 14 leaves, sold in 1977. The provenance of this manuscript, according to the slipcase made for the subsequent owner, includes the Justin G. Turner manuscript sale.

Wilson, was a British journalist and naval historian. The Second Boer War and the earlier, much less well known, First Boer War (December 1880 - March 1881) are collectively known as the Boer Wars. The Second Boer War was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the Afrikaans-speaking Dutch settlers of two independent Boer republics, the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. It ended with a British victory and the annexation of both republics by the British Empire; both would eventually be incorporated into the Union of South Africa, a dominion of the British Empire, in 1910. The conflict is commonly referred to as The Boer War but is also known as the South African War outside South Africa, the Anglo-Boer War among most South Africans. V. R. I Her Life and Empire has an illuminated decorative colour title page and is illustrated throughout with illustrations and photographs of the life ofQueenVictoria with objects of interest such as a note written from her to her mother. Condition: Uniformly bound in half calf but with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities and slight rubbing and marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound.         THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON

1901 - [the true first edition, FINE] With Many Pictures by E. Hering. Indianapolis: The Bowen-Merrill Company, n.d. [1901]. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition (American), preceding the London edition by about a month. To quote from Smith's biography:~.the moon has long had a leading place in the minds and myths of humans. Jules Verne had written one such fantasy in the 1880s [sic - actually 1865] in his VOYAGE TO THE MOON, but Wells was not satisfied with the science in that book. he [Wells] described it [THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON] as an 'imaginative spree', and said 'it is probably the writer's best "scientific romance".' One of the reasons it is the best of Wells's work based on science is that all the scientific aspects -- gravity on the moon, the impact of the sun on the moon's surface, and even what the surface might be like -- were. [verified with] leading experts in astronomy, astronomical physics, and other disciplines to ensure that the book was accurate, within the bounds of knowledge and theory of that time.~THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON was Wells's first book to be turned into a movie (in 1919 -- remade in 1964). CREEK INDIAN LANDS NOW ON THE MARKET [caption title]

Holdenville, Indian Territory: Western Real Estate Company, [circa 1901].. Broadside, 11 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches. Small chip in lower margin, else fine. Rare broadside advertising lands for sale in Indian Territory, issued a dozen years after the "opening" of Oklahoma in 1889 that brought thousands of Sooners into the region. The land had been secured as a result of the "passage of the last Creek agreement," a reference to the 1901 treaty between the United States and the Creek Nation, that resulted in the allotment of land to specific tribe members, which could then be resold. Many members of the Creek tribe were relocated to Indian Territory when they were removed from their lands in Georgia in the late 1820s and early 1830s. The broadside advertises 100,000 acres of land being offered by the Western Real Estate Company of Holdenville, Indian Territory, located just southeast of Oklahoma City. A trust company had been established to guarantee title to the land, and to loan money to purchasers. The agricultural potential of the land, "the best country west of the Mississippi" is touted: it would produce "from 30 to 80 bushels corn per acre; from 3/4 to 1 bale cotton; from 75 to 500 bushels potatoes to the acre. It is a fine fruit and berry center. The climate and the seasons are the very best. We never fail to make a crop here." No copies of this broadside are located in OCLC. Good evidence of land hunger in pre- statehood Oklahoma.

Bryn Mawr College Calendar for 1902 (Jessie Willcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green, Ellen Wetheral Ahrens: one of the greatest rarities and stunning illustrations)

Bryn Mawr: Bryn Mawr College Students&#39; Association, 1901. First edition. Oblong quarto. Exceedingly scarce original printed Bryn Mawr College Calendar comprising THIRTEEN FULL-PAGE THREE-COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS BY JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH, ELIZABETH SHIPPEN GREEN AND ELLEN WETHERALD AHRENS. Measuring 14 x 7.5 inches, this calendar was printed by the Beck Engraving Company who go on later to print many of Smith&#39;s books, including all by David McKay. Original printed wrappers with cover illustration by Elizabeth Shippen Green, calendars calligraphied by the three artists with decorative inititals, six full-page colored illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith, six full-page colored illustrations by Elizabeth Shippen Green and one full-page colored illustration by Ellen Wetheral Ahrens. These illustrations were commissioned especially for this illustrious calendar by the Bryn Mawr College Students&#39; Association and are the first and only appearances of these images anywhere in print. The concept was pre-date by one earlier number which had only 5 full-page color illustrations by Smith (others in border designs). Without a doubt the scarcest and most graphically stunning of any of Smith&#39;s ephemeral items, of which there are hundreds if not thousands of examples through her prolific career. Some very minor chipping to paper, original ties still present, an amazing survival.

Publisher&#39;s dark blue decorative cloth, the upper cover and spine stamped gilt (the first and primary binding state, of four). An unusually Fine, bright copy, the hinges uncracked, of one of the most difficult of Wells&#39;s science fiction titles to be found in collectible condition. & & & The last and perhaps most complex of Wells&#39;s early scientific romances, inspired by Jules Verne&#146;s &#39;Journey to the Moon.&#39; Unlike Verne, Wells had all scientific aspects of his lunar voyage verified for plausibility by experts at the time. In 1919, the book was turned into the first of the films to be based on Wells&#39;s work. "These early &#39;scientific romances&#39; remain unsurpassed for their imagination and visionary power. Where Wells&#39;s contemporaries saw him as adding the scientific imagination to nineteenth-century romance, the twentieth century regarded him as the greatest of the forerunners of modern science fiction. His tales of future evolution, alien intelligence, interplanetary warfare and technological dystopia anticipated most of science fiction&#39;s thematic repertoire."
