Portrait and Biographical Record of Arizona

Chapman Publishing Co., Chicago 1901 - 1034 pp., biographical index, Arizona historical index, and Arizona county historical index, quality photographs. THIS 111 YEAR OLD BOOK IS EXTREMELY RARE, they are seldom for sale! It has been rebound in it's original full leather boards and is fully usable and complete. It's pages are fragile, with chipping, some water staining and one spot of insect infestation from page 979 (smaller in size) to page 1034 (larger, to nickle size). Some biographical information and index information is affected by the insect infestation but in no way does it render the information useless. It affects a very small portion of the biographical text. That being said this book is invaluable to the Arizona territorial researcher or historian, it contains excellent photographs of many of the pioneer "movers and shakers" of the Arizona Territory. The photographs of these Arizona pioneers, accompanying their biographical description, are stunning. Some examples of biographies are William M. Breakenridge, Charles Shibell, William "Bucky" O'Neill, Henry Clay Hooker, George W. Cheney, E.B. Gage and many more. The counties of Arizona are well represented with many of the pioneer biographies coming from Cochise County many of the people were there when Tombstone was booming! If you are a Arizona historian or researcher this book is invaluable. This book is wrapped in a protective Mylar cover. As a collector, the book has been in my collection for eight years, it was my good fortune to be able to purchase another from a pioneer Tombstone family, thus the sale of this one. Please note this book weighs a little over nine pounds, shipping will be quoted to the buyer when their location is known. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        [Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing

Oblong octavo. Flexible cloth with 35 photographs mounted rectos only. Some adhesive used to affix the photos has bled through to the images but all are still easily viewable, overall very good. A very faint inscription on the first leaf with the name William Armstrong and apparently dated in October, 1901, but which is otherwise unreadable. Location not obvious but there is an image of a steamboat with "Scranton" and "Lackawanna Railroad" on the side which might indicate Northern Pennsylvania. Virtually all rural or rustic scenes, with about half of them scenes of hunting and fishing: duck shooting, boating with guns, posing with guns, lolling around the campfire, displaying caught fish whilst drinking beer, and so forth. .

REBELLION In PHOTOGRAPHY. Illustrated with Photographs by the Writer. Reprinted from the Overland Monthly August, 1901.

San Francisco: 1901 - 20 b/w reproduced photographic images. Genthe, born in Berlin, emigrated to San Francisco in 1895, where he taught himself the art of photography. In this article, written very early in Genthe's career, he presciently declares his admiration for the new camera equipment, which allows for "an unstudied pose and a natural expression." Further, he herein likens photography to art, where the photographer should strive for "the approval of the painter and sculptor."         [Photo Album]: Travels to Northern Africa, India, Turkey, Persia, Russia (Azerbaijan), Tunis, Greece, and Western Europe

Oblong quarto. Red half calf and cloth with "Photographs" in gilt on the front board. Erosion of the calf, which is a bit powdery, else sound and very good. A collection of 356 good quality photographs of turn-of-the-century foreign travels. The majority are 3" x 2.25" silver gelatin prints, with a substantial number of prints that are a bit larger, including a few cyanotypes. Condition of the photographs is mostly near fine. Most have been captioned, either in pencil beneath the mount, or on the negative. Most bear the date 1901, a few 1902. The unidentified photographer was an exhaustive shutterbug, and it seems that little that he observed went undocumented. Many of the images are of architecture, but some are of native peoples as well. There are generous selections from several countries including India (Bombay, Agra, Delhi); Egypt (Karnak and other parts of Luxor, Cairo, Thebes); Russia (the Azerbaijan region: wagons, caravans, and Cossacks); Persia (Tehran, soldiers, Persians, more caravans). The Western European shots are primarily of architecture. A nice selection of images, with more than the usual percentage (probably about two-thirds) from "exotic" locales. One interesting element is that mounted in the rear of the album are photographs (contemporaneous with the others) that have been printed from damaged negatives. .

        UNPROFESSIONAL TALES. By "Normyx."

London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1901.. White cloth, with pictorial upper panel and decorations. Binding a trifle rubbed, with some modest dulling to the spine, long pencil bibliographic commentary on free endsheet, but a very good copy of a book difficult to locate in fine condition. Half morocco slipcase and chemise (spine quite worn). First edition of Douglas's pseudonymously published sixth book, but first work of fiction, much of it written in collaboration with his wife. The edition is reported to have consisted of only seven hundred and fifty copies. It was a commercial failure, and it has been speculated that a portion of the edition was pulped. WOOLF A6.

1901. Kipling, J.Lockwood. London: Macmillan and Co., 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction... The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" [CGEL]. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman, becomes a disciple to a Lama, and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling, the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier (though in the same month as the English one).~As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan, the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika (the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s, when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning).~This is a near-fine copy (very minor wear at the head of the spine, the usual foxing on the frontispiece tissue). Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century.

The Game of Squash. A Practical Handbook to English Squash-Rackets and American Squash-Tennis

New York: J.F. Taylor & Co., 1901. 16mo. Xxpp., 131pp. 26 pages of squash bo ok advertisements including list of books by same author in rear. Foldout b&w frontispiece sketch of a squash court. 14 photographic illustrations on plates. Photographs demonstrate proper positioning of hands and body. 10 in text line drawings, often diagrams of the court and instructions on how to hold a racket. Bound in soft cover suede-like material, brown with raised lettering for title. Large oval water stain to front and back covers which does not intrude into the book. Some minor creasing to corners of pages. Edges are gilted. Eustace Miles was both a famous athlete and scholar in his day. He won the amateur racquet champion ship of the world in singles, and the championship of England in doubles. He was also amateur squash-tennis champion of America. Miles felt this book was needed because squash had no literature of its own. In the preface he states that he believes this is the first book on the game. Until the year this book was published there had not been a squash championship and very few squash competitions and few professionals devoted solely to it in spite of the fact that thousands played the game. With this book Eustace hoped to teach the game but also to point out the many advantages of the game and its importance in English and American life. Miles wrote on a great variety of subjects in addition to squash. He wrote books on how to write, the Roman Empire, and Jesus Christ in addition to other books on athletics and proper diet.. Book.
