        Herodias

Eragny Press, London 1901 - Hardcover. 1 of 226 copies, of which 200 were for sale, issued by Hacon and Ricketts. Founded in 1894 by Lucien and his wife, Esther, the Eragny Press became well known for its distinctive designs, woodcuts, and printing. The press originally printed books using Charles Rickett's Vale Press type face; however, in 1904, after the closing of the Vale Press, Lucien began publishing his own books and printing them with a typeface of his design called Brook Type. This lovely book is an edition of Flaubert's story about the beheading of John the Baptist. In an early full crimson morocco binding with five raised bands to spine. Title, author, and date in gilt to spine. Slight rubbing to hinges. Leather turnins are gold tooled and the endpapers are marbled paper. Red handsewn endbands with a three color silk ribbon marker and top edge in gilt. Interior pages are bright and clean save for evidence of bookplate on verso of free front endpaper that has lightly offset on opposite page. Includes a woodcut frontispiece illustration by Lucien with borders and initials done by Esther. Near fine condition. A lovely fine binding. In French. 104 pages. PRI/080514.         In His Own Image

London and New York: John Lane: The Bodley Head, , 1901. Octavo. Original purple cloth boards, titles to spine and front board in white, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Housed in a purple quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Rubbing to white lettering on spine with most lacking, faint cloth discolouration along top edges, mild bumping to corners and ends of spine, but a most superior copy of a delicate publication in the profoundly rare dust jacket with just the mildest wear. First edition, first printing, first issue binding. The sheets were printed in the US, with 1,500 sets imported to the UK, where the book was published on 5 March 1901. It was released in the US one month later, on 6 April 1901. Copies issued in the US were bound in purple cloth, and in the UK in green, grey, red, or dark blue cloth. The question of determining which colour of cloth has priority is much debated; however, it is widely accepted that the earliest copies are those bound in purple cloth, and Woolf posits that the first copies issued in the UK were imported from the US, having been bound in purple cloth.

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire Année complète 1901 EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: Bureaux de la Revue, 1901. Fine. Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1901, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Originale.binding Edition Editor at bradel half percaline dark green, smooth back, as part of black morocco, small gilded iron and double gold mesh queue.Douze the January to December 1901. Covers conservées.Chaque number is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Paul Fort, André Gide ("Emmanuel Signoret", "The Limits of Art"), Francis Jammes, etc.Publication founded in 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a review Monthly belonging to the first wave of small symbolist journals. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular collaborators, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. L'Ermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time like the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] that deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his symbolist spirit, employees are more interested in poetry than fiction. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, believes that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddling the end of the century aesthetics and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

Der Wille zur Macht (The Will to Power)

      C. G. Naumann, Leipzig 1901 - First Edition of the "483 Notes" Will To PowerDer Wille zur Macht (The Will to Power) In Volume XV of Nietzsche's Werke, GrossoktavausgabeC. G. Naumann, Leipzig, 1901. Opp TP + TP + [V]-XXII + 3 half titles + [5]-541 + 5 leaves = ads, Octavo. Schaberg Nachlass-1. Nietzsche's so-called "master work," this first edition of The Will to Power contains 483 notes altogether. It is, however, a book Nietzsche never wrote. His sister, Elisabeth Foerster-Nietzsche created it from his notebooks using a general sketch for such a work also found there in fulfillment of a promised volume of that name. In fact, Nietzsche had rejected the project long before his death; though some of the notes would undoubtedly have contributed to another work on a grand scale possibly to be titled The Revaluation of Values. The present title was expanded to 1,067 entries for the 1906 edition. Still, The Will to Power has garnered a tremendous amount of attention from scholars (most especially, Heidegger, whose work entitled Nietzsche treats the Nachlass almost exclusively) and from laymen alike. CONDITION: Very good+ to near fine. Bound in the standard Naumann half-leather binding with marbled boards. Still retaining the clean and bright pages, with all the marbling to page edges also bright. Scarce. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        First on the Antarctic Continent,

London: George Newnes, Limited,, 1901. being an Account of the British Antarctic Expedition 1898-1900. Octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine together with a small gilt block (showing the author on skis), front cover with a large block in gold and silver (showing the Southern Cross in pack-ice), top edges gilt, untrimmed, black endpapers. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of the author, numerous illustrations in the text (18 full-page), 3 coloured folding maps. Inscribed on the half-title: "Doy Bird, April 17 1907. Spring Street, Melbourne [Australia]" and with her very attractive etched bookplate on front pastedown. Spine a little rolled and gilt lightly rubbed, a few abrasions to top edge, a few small marks to front cover, lower fore-corners bumped. A very good copy. First edition of this uncommon and attractively produced Polar title. Financed by the publisher Sir George Newnes, the Southern Cross expedition "laid claim to a number of 'firsts': the first time dogs were used on the Antarctic continent, a furthest south record, the first sledge journey on the Ross Ice Shelf …[and today] best remembered as having discovered the northward movement of the Ross Ice Shelf and the emperor penguin rookery at Cape Crozier" (Taurus). Borchgrevink probably did not get the credit that he deserved as Sir Clements Markham and the geographical establishment were dismissive of his rather journalistic account, and their "attention was focussed on Scott's forthcoming expedition" (Howgego). It was not until 1930, just four years before his death, that Borchgrevink received the RGS Patron's Medal. The former owner of this copy, Doy Bird (Dorothy Clare Bird, later Brookes, 1887-1949, noted Melbourne hostess), was a family friend of the extraordinary Australian transvestite spy and Antarctic explorer Herbert Dyce Murphy, who accompanied Mawson on his 1911 expedition; she is mentioned in Heather Rossiter's Lady Spy, Gentleman Explorer: The Life of Herbert Dyce Murphy (2001, p. 117).

        Eigenh. Schriftstück mit U.

München, 3. IX. 1901.. 2 SS. Folio..

Autograph Letter, signed ("George Gissing"), to F.G. Kitton, "should I be giving you too much trouble If I asked you to get type-written for me (one copy only) the Preface to David Copperfield ?"

1901. Ink on 10-centime postcard, 20 lines, addressed on verso in Gissing's hand, to F.G. Kitton, Esq., Pré Mill House, St. Albans, Angleterre. 1 vols. 3 x 5 inches. Fine. Ink on 10-centime postcard, 20 lines, addressed on verso in Gissing's hand, to F.G. Kitton, Esq., Pré Mill House, St. Albans, Angleterre. 1 vols. 3 x 5 inches. Gissing at Work on Dickens. Gissing began to correspond with F.G. Kitton after publication of his 1898 study of Dickens; they collaborated on the ill-fated Rochester edition of Dickens, killed after only a few volumes appeared. "chosen by George Sproul as general editor and annotator of the Autograph Edition, Kitton wrote to Gissing to propose that he should write a new introduction to David Copperfield - a choice which was ratified with particular gratefulness. Gissing promised to have it ready by the end of the year and named his terms - fifteen guineas for 3,000 words - and for once he received more than he asked for, that is, twenty pounds" - P. Coustillas, Gissing's Writings on Dickens In his minute hand, Gissing writes Kitton concerning the preparation of a typescript of Gissing's Preface to David Copperfield, and proposing to send him the manuscript by registered post. At this time, Gissing was also in negotiations with Chapman and Hall over the terms for an abridgment of Forster's Life of Dickens. Gissing gives Kitton an address for correspondence c/o Mademoiselle Saglio, Château de Tazières, Fourchambault, Nièvre, France. Marie Saglio was a cousin of Gabrielle Fleury, and the couple stayed there in the autumn of 1900 & 1901. David Copperfield appeared with Gissing's introduction in 1903, the year of his death.

The Coming Nelson. From the original painting by Fred Morgan in the possession of Messrs. A. & F. Pears, Ltd

London.. 1901.. Chromolithograph, image 19 1/2 x 28 on sheet 21 1/4 x 29 1/4 inches. Small stain in lower right margin (not affecting image), several edge tears with one just entering image area, light toning to 1 1/2 inch panel at right side. Otherwise a clean, bright image. A gorgeous image of a young boy sailing his boats under the approving eye of his mother and sister, by the prolific and very popular Victorian painter Fred Morgan, whose paintings of children and animals are particularly charming. A. & F. Pears soap company pioneered the use of "fine art" reproductions in advertising their product, thus equating it in the public mind with the finer things of life. The most famous example of this is their chromolithographic reproduction of Sir John Everett Millais' "Bubbles." The Pears Annual was published from 1891 to the 1920s accompanied by 2 or more of these beautifully printed chromolithographic reproductions of popular paintings of the day. .
