A MAN OF DEVON: Short Stories Including the First Appearance of a Forsyte Character (the Florence Henniker-Oliver Brett Copy)

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1901. [Galsworthy, John) Sinjohn, John (pseud.) A MAN OF DEVON. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1901. FIRST EDITION of the author's fourth and rarest book, a first edition which, in terms of survival and as a condition-rarity, ranks #1 out of all Galsworthy's major works. This is the NEAR FINE (one corner bumped, tiniest bit of wear) copy which belonged to Florence Henniker, Thomas Hardy's collaborator and love-interest, a woman who was part of Galsworthy's literary circle (her bold ink ownership signature on half-title). An excellent ASSOCIATION COPY and particularly desirable in the light of Galsworthy's later refusal to reprint or acknowledge any his first four "John Sinjohn" pseudonymous books (which fictionalized poorly-veiled personal life details, including the illicit affair he had with his cousin's wife). Curious Florence Henniker may have found out about Galsworthy's authorship of A MAN OF DEVON on the sly as Galsworthy did not present, as far as we know, a single copy of the four Sinjohn first editions to friends or family. This copy's provenance further includes the legendary collection of Oliver Brett, 3d Viscount of Esher (1881-1963, bookplate). A MAN OF DEVON consists of four short stories, one of which contains the first appearance of a Forsyte Character: "The Salvation of Swithin Forsyte." This short story was the seed that launched the nine legendary Forsyte novels as well as two TV miniseries (1967 & 2002). So here you have it: his rarest book in superb original condition, with an alluring association, and the first place one can read the story that launched a literary saga which still has relevant and iconic value to our 21st century.. Signed. First Edition. Pictorial Cover. Near Fine.

Southern California, 1901. Photograph Album. Very Good. The album is approximately 6" x 9" and contains 75 photographs ranging in size from 1" x 1.25" to 5" x 8". The album has some minor wear; the photographs are in nice shape. The photographs include a number of Southern California landmarks including Pasadena's Hotel Green, the Hotel Green Golf Club (including one of her husband, Edwin A. Strout, on a putting green), the Pasadena Golf Club, the Los Angeles Country Club, an Ostrich Farm (probably Cawston's), the Mt. Lowe Railway, the Echo Mountain Resort, the Alpine Tavern, Catalina's main street and Metropole Hotel, an old adobe building and the Arlington Hotel in Santa Barbara, the beach and Old Mission at Santa Barbara, Monterey including the Hotel del Monte, and a number of photos of family and friends. The highlights of the album are two panoramic photos of the 1901 Rose Tournament Parade. The first shows horse-drawn floats. The second shows four flower-decorated automobiles in the first-ever appearance of gas powered vehicles in the parade.

The History of Helyas Knight of the Swan. Translated by Robert Copland from the French version

New York: The Grolier Club, 1901 Limited edition of three hundred and twenty-five copies, three of which are on vellum. Full pigskin branded with the device of Wynken de Worde and mounted with brass clasps. Three paneled spine with tooled floral motifs Binding extremities lightly rubbed, pages untrimmed. Small quarto. Engraved illustrations (one is in black and red) and initial letters are facsimiles of the originals on wood and the text is printed from type made especially for this purpose by Sir Charles Reed's Sons in London, modeled upon the original fonts of Wynkin7. Title page printed in black and red. The book is printed on Whatman paper with ample margins of the same size (as can be estimated) as that of the original. Prospectus included; it is worth noting that prospectus states the book came with a leather slipcase, though this copy, like most others, does not have one. A remarkably fine copy. The History of the Knight of the Swan is a medieval tale about a mysterious rescuer who comes in a swan-drawn boat to defend a damsel, his only condition being that he must never be asked his name. The earliest versions do not provide specific identity to this knight, but the Old French Crusade cycle of chansons de geste adopted it to make the Swan Knight (Le Chevalier au Cigne, first version around 1192) the legendary ancestor of Godfrey of Bouillon.

Photograph Postcards - Set of 8 - Nordenskjold's Swedish South Polar Expedition

Antarctic 1901 - Antarctica, South America, 1901-1904. Collection of eight (8) photographic postcards made in Buenos Aires, together forming a lovely succinct visual chronicle of Otto Nordenskjold's Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901-1904), the little-known Swedish Relief Expedition (1903-1904), and the successful rescue by the Argentine Relief Expedition led by Captain Irizar with the Uruguay (1903-1904). Postcards measure approximately 14 x 9,5 cm, each printed with Spanish captions, some with manuscript annotations in Spanish, individually mounted with clear corners onto a cardstock leaf. Four (4) are postally used, bearing post marks and stamps from Argentina. Slight age-toning, otherwise in Very Good Condition. These rare picture postcards relate to the Swedish South Polar Expedition, a little-known rescue attempt, and the successful rescue by the Argentinean Navy. They commemorate heroic captains, courageous marines and sailing vessels which navigated Antarctic waters in a decidedly competitive mission involving several nations. From the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, three Antarctic expeditions, historically connected to one another, are represented in this collection. Two postcards pertain to the Swedish South Polar Expedition (1901-1904) led by Otto Nordenskjöld and Carl Anton Larsen, including a group portrait of the party who were later rescued from the Antarctic Peninsula, and a sorrowful scene of the vessel later being crushed and sunk in ice off the coast of Paulet Island off the north-eastern end of the Antarctic Peninsula. [In 1895 the first confirmed landing on the mainland of Antarctica was made from this same ship under the command of a whaler.] One postcard shows preparations for the departure of the little-known Swedish Relief Expedition (1903-1904), under command of K.H. Olof F. Glydén, Captain and crew onboard, at Buenos Aires. The deck of Norwegian whaling ship 'Frithjof' is laden with supplies. Perhaps of special interest for being generally forgotten, the Swedish navy also undertook their own Relief Expedition, departing from Sweden 18 August 1903. The vessel was almost shipwrecked on its voyage, and upon arriving at Snow Hill on December 4th, Captain Glydén found that 'Uruguay' had already made the rescue. Five postcards show the Argentine Relief Expedition (1903-1904) which succeeeded in rescuing Nordenskjöld's surviving Antarctic party. These are images of Lieutenant Commander Julián Irizar (1869-1935), the navy's ship 'Uruguay' including the departure scene and return to Buenos Aires. An especially scarce image is that of the heroic Argentinean crew members. Of the eight postcards included in this collection, five of the vessel scenes are from 'La Nación' series, as follows:. No. 16 Argentinean 'Uruguay' departing from Buenos Aires No. 30 Argentinean 'Uruguay' returning No. 39 Swedish 'Antarctic' trapped in Antarctic ice and taking on water No. 36 Swedish 'Antarctic' crew, Nordenskjöld, Larsen, etc. No. 53 Norwegian 'Frithjof' crew and supplies on deck Of the 4 postally used postcards, one is addressed to Adela F. Barragán at San Juan [Argentina], possibly a notable retired governess and teacher who in 1888 had requested an increased pension, according to the volumes of country's national congress sessions. This item also features Buenos Aires post mark dated 30 December 1903, and a national postal 5 peso stamp. Another was posted to Bolivar [San Carlos de Bolívar, Argentina], is addressed to a miss Sara Herrera and inscribed by Ernestina, possibly Ernestina Dolores Herrera Díaz Herrera, born 1 Feb 1861 in Buenos Aires, who married Pedro Ayzaguer, a noble and descendant of an ancient Viceroy of Rio de la Plata. Captioned in manuscript, 2 December 1903, postmarked the same day in Buenos Aires, and featuring a national 2 peso postal stamp, she writes, "Recuerdo de este gran dia Buenos Aires, [Memory of this great day, Buenos Aires]." The Swedish Antarctic expeditionary party, led by Swedish geologist Nils Otto

It was chosen as a location due to its size and excellent railway connections. Our 25th president was President William McKinley, who gave a speech at the exposition on Sept. 5, 1901, which turned out to be his last speech. He was shot by an anarchist, Leon Czolgosz, at the Temple of Music on Sept. 6, 1901, and died eight days later. This is a unique booklet shaped in the head of a buffalo, which was a clear representation of the host city for the world's fair. Light wear to the spine panel, with the image of the buffalo clear and sharp and internally a clean copy. Overall a very good copy.

"[This work offers] a comparative treatment of the articles of the Chilean code, by concordances to the Roman law, the Code Napoleon, and the civil codes of a number of other South American countries, with references to the writings of the leading jurists, including appropriate translations and a brief commentary by the author. The work was inspired by the success of St. Joseph's celebrated 'Concordances,' and as a reference work has a decided value" (Borchard). This work was reissued in 1919. Its first edition is a one-volume work published in Quito in 1899. All editions are scarce. OCLC locates 9 copies of the second edition in North American law libraries.         Philosoph (1889 - 1976): Eigenh. Porträt-Briefkarte mit zweifacher U. (voller Namenszug). Ohne Ort [Freiburg / Breisgau], 10. XI. 1969. Kl.-8° (14,5 x 10,5 cm). 1/2 S. u. 2 Zeilen (weiterer Gruß u. zweite U.)

Brooklyn Life: The Illustrated Home Weekly for Brooklyn and Long Island (bound in 3 Vols.)

Brooklyn, NY: Brooklyn Life Publishing Company. Decorative Cloth. Collectible; Very Good. 3 nicely-bound folio volumes of the weekly "Brooklyn Life". Each volume collects half a year's worth of issues: Vol. I: Sept. 1901-Feb. 1902; Vol. II: March-August 1904; and Vol.III: Sept. 1917-Feb. 1918. Undoubtedly the most thorough weekly accounting of all things Brooklyn (and Long Island), the newspaper has a wonderful local focus and consists of business advertising, photographs and cartoons thruout, not to mention the most detailed reporting on Brooklyn's growing financial industry, real estate, the school scene, sports, weddings, etc. A gamut of turn-of-the-century Brooklyn life, painstakingly documented. All 3 volumes have held up nicely as well and are solidly-bound and VG, in their russet cloth (with light-blue spine labels) over marbled boards. Light wear and rubbing to the boards, very light soiling to the preliminaries. The pages of the weeklies are bright and clean and eminently readable. A very impressive collection of 70 some issues of this early, now-uncommon New York weekly.

FIRST ON THE ANTARCTIC CONTINENT Being an Account of the British Antarctic Expedition 1898-1900

London: George Newnes, Limited. Original dark blue cloth binding with ship design to front board. 1901. 1st edition. hb. 8vo, pp. xv, 333. Bound-in at the end of the book is a 32-page publisher's catalogue. . Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink (1864-1934) was an Anglo-Norwegian polar explorer and a pioneer of modern Antarctic travel. He began his career in 1894 by joining a Norwegian whaling expedition, during which he became one of the first people to set foot upon the Antarctic mainland. This achievement helped him to obtain backing for his Southern Cross Expedition, which became the first to overwinter on the Antarctic mainland The "Southern Cross" expedition had an unusual distinction: the leader's benefactor, George Newnes, and his publisher, were one in the same. Borchgrevink was not a good writer; his expedition was already under-appreciated, and he had been denigrated by Sir Clements Markham for, as Markham perceived, having usurped funds and priority from the British National Antarctic Expedition; notwithstanding that the Borchgrevink expedition had achieved a new "furthest south" of 78 degree, 50 minutes. It wasn't until 1912 that he received a handsome tribute from Roald Amundsen, and in 1930 Britain's Royal Geographical Society finally acknowledged his contributions to polar exploartion and awarded him its Patron's Medal. Our offering is the first edition (Rosove 46.A1). It has been expertly (and almost unnoticeably) re-backed with the original spine cloth re-laid, and new endpapers matching the original. The gilt and silver design and lettering is exceptionally bright, a bit less so on the spine. The three folding maps are in excellent condition. In all, a very good copy of a title which Rosove describes as "scarce". .

Autograph letter signed ("Ernest H. Shackleton").

[London, c. 1901]. - 8vo. 2 pp. To Cyril Longhurst, secretary to the British National Antarctic Expedition: "I have been awfully busy. I do hope you got the list of books all right on Monday. I enclose a cheque from Sir Joseph Verdin Bart. Will you acknowledge it officially. I hope to see you tomorrow old chap." After his signature, Shackleton adds, "Address all letters 30 Gloucester S." - In 1901, Shackleton was chosen to participate in the Antarctic expedition, where he was responsible for seawater analysis, meals, and provisions. The stress of preparing for that voyage evident as the "awfully busy" sailor ties up some loose ends before shoving off. Most likely, "the list of books" were requested to accompany the crew on the upcoming voyage, which departed London on 31 July 1901. In 1904, Shackleton married, with his "old chap" Cyril tapped as best man. - In fine, clean condition.

        Sailing Alone Around the World

Illustrations by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian. 8vo. Dark green cloth with red and silver lettering and pictorial stamping. xvi, 294pp. Frontispiece, numerous line drawings. Very good. Faintest of edgewear; large faint abrasion on rear pastedown. A tight and bright and handsome copy of the "Special Pan-American Edition" (to cite both title page and front board) -- and with a choice, bold signature and inscription by the noted Nova Scotian-born American adventurer and author (1844-1909) remembered as the first person to sail single-handedly around the world. Front flyleaf reads, "'As for myself the / wonderful sea charmed / me from the first' / Page 2 / Joshua Slocum / Pan-American Edition / July 22nd 1901 / written for the / Galena Illinois / Public Library." Front pastedown opposite bears the quaint, small bookplate of this famed northwest Illinois city (adopted hometown of U.S. Grant) noting this 1901 gift to the library from that institution's founder, noted local sociality, do-gooder and jet-setter Anna E. Felt. (The sole other library marking, by the way, being the blind-embossed library name on title page.) Not Slocum's usual boilerplate inscription (with reference to his ship "Spray"), thus unusual and quite attractive -- not to mention scarce, especially in this lovely condition.
