        Lord Jim

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons 1900 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's green cloth, front board with decorative floral motif and lettering in black, spine lettered in gilt with black flower decal. About fine, with just a touch of faint toning to the spine, some spotting to the page edges and first and last leaves of the text block, a few scattered spots to the otherwise very clean pages. An exceptional and extremely fresh copy. Wise 7. Lord Jim tells the story of a young English seaman narrated by Conrad's reoccurring character and sometimes alter-ego Charles Marlow and inspired by both the SS Jeddah and the life of James Brook, the first White Rajah of Sarawak in Borneo. Throughout the novel, which was originally intended to be a short story, Conrad explores, as the Encyclopædia Britannica writes, "the perplexing, ambiguous problem of lost honour and guilt, expiation and heroism." Notably, Lord Jim inspired the title of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby," specifically from a description of Lord Jim as a man "of great gabasidy" - a polyglot's pronunciation of "great capacity."         Hawaiian fishes: seven rare publications with full-colour illustrations]

      - Honolulu, various publishers including the Honolulu Aquarium, ca. 1900-1930. Seven items, as follows: one large, oblong atlas (30.0 x 22.7 cm) with photographic frontispiece, two text leaves, and 20 full-colour plates of Hawaiian fish. Printed wrappers; [AND] two small booklets and four (16.0 x 10.7 cm) colour printed envelopes acting as ‘postcards’; all six with leporello (concertina) full-colour fish and fishery printings (12 or 18-22 images each - on rectos and versos; one with an extra-full colour postcard loosely inserted). One booklet oblong (12.5 x 17.5 cm) with only 12 images and versos blank, in full green cloth with large pictorial gilt front cover and title "Hawaiian Fishes", the other booklet measuring 17.2 x 12.5 cm, with blue cloth boards, large gilt vignette on the front board and title "Fishes of Hawaii".= The first item is a special edition, probably published in very low numbers, by a Honolulu-based company supporting the Honolulu Seawater Aquarium. It contains a photoprint of the newly founded aquarium and, by permission of the U.S. Fish Commission, it includes the fine full-colour plates for David Starr Jordan and B. W. Eigenmann's rare report on the fishes and fisheries of the Hawaiian islands, published in 1902 in 250 copies only. All other items are also related to the Honolulu Aquarium. ‘The Aquarium was built in 1904 by Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Cooke on land denoted for the purpose by Mr. James B. Castle’ (from the introductory texts). All items are meant for identification of the most popular and colourful fish in the aquarium, and as a souvenir of the visit to the aquarium. None is dated, but of the four envelopes, the oldest states, in the right top corner ‘Postage 1 cent without message’, two slightly younger ones have ‘1 cent’ replaced by ‘1½ cent’, and the most recent one simply states ‘place stamp here’. Some light wear, the first item with some light damp staining at the outer top edge; one leporello partly torn at fold, otherwise a very good, unmarked set. All items are rare, especially in such a good condition. Dean I, p. 651 (for Jordan & Eigenmann). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

In recent half dark blue morocco with raised bands, gilt titles to spine and green cloth boards, top edge gilt, original pictorial cloth bound in at rear. Winston Churchill's personal account of the first five months of the Boer War, which includes impressions on the Relief of Ladysmith, and also the story of WSC's capture, and dramatic escape from the Boers. He was captured while a military reporter, but fled his prison camp and travelled almost 300 miles to Portuguese Lourenço Marques in Delagoa Bay, with the assistance of an English mine manager. His escape made him a minor national hero for a time in Britain, though instead of returning home, he rejoined General Buller's army on its march to relieve the British at the Siege of Ladysmith and take Pretoria. He was one of the first British troops through, and in fact, alongside his cousin the Duke of Marlborough, was able to get ahead on horseback to demand and receive the surrender of 52 Boer guards from the prison camp.

New York: , circa 1900. New York. circa 1900. Oblong octavo measuring 6" x 8.5". String-tied black paper over flexible paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 51 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 3.75" x 5" without captions. Very good album with tiny chips and tears with near fine photographs.A photo album compiled by Hoosick, New York native Dorothy Church Howe around 1900 with her bookplate on the verso of the front board. Dorothy was the daughter of Zoe Fanny Rudd and Thomas F. Howe who owned the town's corner store and was postmaster of Hoosick beginning in 1908 until his death in 1930. The album shows portrait photographs of Dorothy and her family as well as photos of their family home and the store. The family was upper middle class and according to his obituary, "one of the town's most prominent residents." Throughout the photos people are dressed in fashionable clothes and posing in gardens and in horse drawn carriages. One photos shows a man riding a bicycle, another shows a girl climbing up a tree. The Howe's had four daughters including Dorothy and small children are seen throughout the album. One photo shows a pregnant Mrs. Howe in a high-collared dress posing with her young daughter in their yard. The store and town are also seen throughout the album as well as nearby Hoosick Falls. The town was considered a boomtown in the 19th century and was the perfect place for Thomas to start his store after leaving employment with the Railroad in 1895. Dorothy graduated from New York State College and was part of the Beta chapter of the Omicron Nu honor society. She taught mathematics at Mechanicville High School for 42 years and passed away in 1987.An interesting collection of photographs of an American family at the turn of the century. .

Presentation album of photographs by J.H. Lithgow, Launceston, Tasmania, 1900

Oblong quarto, half morocco over gilt lettered cloth boards (rubbed, lower board discoloured), front paste-down with calligraphic manuscript presentation inscription 'Mr. & Mrs. R.W. Hart. With sincere wishes for their Happiness and Prosperity, from Mr. & Mrs. J.H. Lithgow. 17.4.1900'; containing [24] toned carbon print photographs in format 150 x 200 mm, mounted recto and verso of 12 album leaves of thick card, all with calligraphic captions beneath the image; scattered mild spotting to the mounts, the carbon prints all fine or near fine. J.H. Lithgow, a professional chemist in Launceston, was a talented amateur photographer and a member of the Northern Tasmanian Camera Club. Lithgow produced this highly artistic and breathtakingly beautiful album of his own photographs - all of them superb toned carbon prints of Tasmanian scenes (with the exception of the last, a Glenelg seacsape) - to present to the prominent Launceston couple, Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Hart, possibly on the occasion of their marriage, in April 1900. The colour of the prints alternates between various shades of blue, green, sepia and grey, and the subjects include the Salmon Ponds; New Norfolk; the Derwent; the Lachlan; Russell Falls; Collins Falls; Lady Franklin's willows; Quamby estate, near Launceston; Corra Linn; hop picking, and a fox hunt. Chris Long, in Natural Colour Photography in Australia 1895-1960 (an appendix to Gael Newton'sShades of Light online)notes that in 1907 Lithgow, in partnership with F.E. Burbury, acquired the first autochrome plates to arrive in Australia. The album of Lithgow's photographs we offer here is a magnificent example of pre-Federation amateur photography in Australia.

[NEW GUINEA; MISSIONARY] Dictionnaire de la langue de Roro-Mekeo

Unpublished manuscript. Undated, but circa 1900. Small quarto size notebook, 230 x 180 mm, bound in heavy boards covered in hessian cloth, the upper board with the blind stamped crest of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Issoudun, front paste-down with a printed map of France laid down, manuscript title page (almost detached) 'Dictionnaire de la langue de Roro-Mekeo. J.M. Vitale Miss. du S.C.', unpaginated, containing approximately [200] leaves with manuscript entries in magenta ink recto and verso; Father Joseph Vitale's dictionary of Roro and Mekeo, Austronesian languages spoken by the indigenous people of Yule Island (the site of the Sacred Heart Mission) and the adjacent mainland on the southern coast of New Guinea; the pages divided into three columns and arranged alphabetically, with the French words and phrases in the left hand column and their equivalents in the centre and right hand columns; the binding has virtually disintegrated but the work is apparently complete, contained within the boards as a series of disbound quires; the pages are remarkably clean and well preserved. The Sacred Heart Mission at Yule Island was established in 1885, and Father Vitale was among the first group of missionaries to arrive there, working with the native Roro and Mekeo speakers both on Yule and at nearby stations from the 1890s until his death in 1947. His dictionary, which was never published, dates to the first generation of contact that the Roro and Mekeo people had with Europeans. It is very much a 'frontier' work, compiled in the field under trying conditions, and it records these languages as they would have been used prior to any external influence. A manuscript of paramount importance in the field of Austronesian linguistics.

La lune à un mètre : Souvenir de l'Exposition 1900

[Paris : Exposition Universelle, 1900]. Lithograph on tinted paper laid down on board, as issued; circular format, diameter 400 mm; a couple of surface marks and tiny amounts of paper loss at the right edge, otherwise fine; mounted in a glazed frame. A striking souvenir "poster" produced for the Exposition Universelle held in Paris between April and November, 1900. The design is based on an image from the groundbreaking film by Georges Méliès, La lune à un mètre (1898), more famously known by its alternative title Le rêve d'un astronome (The Astronomer's dream). It was used to advertise one of the most popular attractions at the exhibition, a powerful telescope known as La grande lunette. Constructed specifically for the exhibition by Paul Gautier, the telescope was the centrepiece of the Palais d'Optique, andwas advertised under the rubrique La lune à un mètre (The moon from a distance of one metre). With the aid of this telescope, views of the moon's surface were displayed on a giant screen; these images were produced by the astronomers Maurice Loewy and Pierre Henri Puiseux as a series of large photographs which were printed for the public in stereoscopic and carte de visite format. The Exposition Universelle, which received 50 million visitors, was a showcase for the technology of the present and future. This poster celebrates marvellous advancements in both science (La grande lunette was the world's largest refracting telescope) and the arts (by drawing its design from the most recent of inventions, the motion picture).

Very rare first and only edition of a catalogue of military and other instruments, models of machines, plans, etc., that Faulhaber displayed in the "Kunstkammer" in his house in Ulm. Johann Faulhaber (1580-1635), taught mathematics at Ulm, where his family moved around 1461, after serving as vassals of the Abbot of Fulda. He became the most important of the "Cossists", mathematicians concerned with algebra. After publishing his first arithmetic text, Faulhaber founded his own school in Ulm in 1600, which grew into an internationally famous educational institute for higher mathematical sciences. He later added an artillery and engineering school. Descartes came to study with him, and Faulhaber had a lively contact with Kepler. Applying mathematics to military engineering, the building of fortifications and the art of fire-arms, Faulhaber was also much in demand as fortification engineer, receiving commissions from the King of Sweden and many others. He published a large number of mathematical works, mostly in German, and invented a number of instruments and machines. Two different readers have checked off items in the catalogue, perhaps indicating those in their own collections. In very good condition.

        LORD JIM

1900. [a fine copy] A Tale. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1900. Original light green cloth decorated in black. First Edition of Conrad's fifth (and many would say his greatest) book, the psychological study of a mariner trying to recover his lost honor. Conrad planned to write only a short story when he began LORD JIM, with an eye toward forming a volume consisting of it, "Youth" and "Heart of Darkness"; however, once he got going, the story lengthened into six times its conceived size, and of course it had to become a book unto itself.~Published in an edition of 2,105 domestic copies in October 1900, LORD JIM was bound up without an ad catalogue -- so copies do not "vary" by ad date, like the later YOUTH. This is a remarkably clean copy, with virtually no wear and scarcely any soil -- FINE, other than some light foxing on the first few leaves, and on the page edges; there is a faint endpaper signature dated "Xmas 1900". We find LORD JIM to be the toughest of Conrad's first editions to find in fine condition. Cagle A5a.1.

Albumen or gelatin silver prints in various sizes (8.5 x 8.5 to 15.5 x 21.5 cm), loose, and several mounted with 2 or 8 to a cardboard leaf, some inscribed in negative ('Barnett & Co.', 'J.E.M.'), one with a stamp of 'C.       An appealing collection of photographs, including fine views of Durban, Cape Town, Transvaal, Kimberley, the Craddock Colony, and portraits of Chinese workers at the Simmer and Jack mine, an important goldmine at Johannesburg.         Lord Jim.

London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1900. First edition of one of Conrad's finest novels. Octavo, original cloth. A near fine example with some wear to the extremities and the endpapers ever so slightly browned. First printing with the first issue points including the misprints "anyrate" p. 77, l. 5, "cure" (instead of "cured") p. 226, 7 lines from the bottom, the omission of "keep" after "can" p. 226, 7 lines from the bottom, and "his" p. 319, last line, being printed below the line. "In a moment of crisis, an idealistic ship's officer abandons his post, leaving several hundred passengers to drown. The event at the center of Joseph Conrad's acclaimed novel establishes the character and fate of Jim. Tormented by his defection from his code of conduct, Jim embarks on the globe-traveling quest to regain honor. In the process, he insinuates himself as a leader among a people unaware of his past. Arthur Symons and other critics read Lord Jim as an exploration of Conrad's own 'ideal of an applauded heroism', an ideal that confronts the demands of pragmatism. Others see an allegory for Conrad's guilt over abandoning his native Poland or, alternatively, a story of universal shame. Conrad has come under modern attack for associating 'natives' with chaos and evil. But in Conrad's novels, it is ultimately the colonial system itself that is fraught with horror." (NYPL Books of the Century 67). Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 great novels of the twentieth century.

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire Année complète 1900 EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: Bureaux de la Revue, 1900. Fine. Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1900, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Originale.binding editor to bradel half dark green calico, smooth back, as part of black morocco, gilt small iron and double gold in net queue.Douze numbers from January to December 1900. conservées.Chaque number Covers Edition is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Henry Bataille, Paul Claudel, Paul Fort, Henri Ghéon, André Gide, Francis Jammes, etc.Publication founded in 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a monthly magazine owned by the first wave Small journals Symbolists. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular contributors, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), the Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. The Hermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time as the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] which deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his state of mind symbolist, employees are more interested in poetry than novel. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, says that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddles the fin de siècle aestheticism and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.
