Album of 51 photographs of a Journey from Islamabad to the Lidder Valley, the Kolahoi Glacier, the Yameur Pass and the Sind Valley

Kashmir & Sind [KASHMIR & SIND], circa 1900-10. Oblong album (23 x 30 cm), containing 51 original silver print photographs of various dimensions (mostly snapshots, but two large views of Kolahoi Glacier), with accompanying typed narrative; contemporary half morocco, maroon cloth boards; spine and joints repaired, corners rubbed, otherwise in very good condition. This album records the travels of Edward Bibby and his party as they trek through Kashmir and Sind, northern India. The journey commences at Kanbal, near Islamabad, with further stops at Achebal, Martand, Bawan, Eishmakam Monastery, Ganeshbal, Pahlgam, Lidawat (Lidderwatt), Sekhwas Yamsar Nag Lake, Koolan, Sonamarg, Gangagir, Talijaz and Gundabal. Excerpt from accompanying narrative: "The ascent [of the Yameur Pass] if taken gently is not trying and the view when one gets to the top 14000 ft repays one for one's trouble. Looking back one sees the bowl shaped valley towards Sekhwas, the hilly covered with snow and one or two magnificent glaciers. On the other side is the Sind Valley. What first struck us was the absolutely precipitous drop on the Sind Valley side. One mass of snow, and we started to think our descent would be an arduous undertaking, especially for the coolies. However we sat down to have tiffin and wait for our coolies to come up.... Just as we had finished lunch we heard a hooroosh just behind us and a crowd of coolies came pouring over the hill top. We discovered that they had just completed a path through the snow for the Residency party who were coming the next day." End excerpt .

Smaller Faro Game case used by the player (called "case keeper")

Chicago: Manufactured by HC Evans & Company, [1900]. Hinged wood frame. Very Good+. It was one of the few games played by all classes - everyone, of all races, sexes and means. circa 1900? Manufactured by HC Evans & Company, Chicago. Hinged wood frame with printed cards, pips and bone beads. Top of the line handcrafted Faro Case keeper with the wood having some marks but overall in very good+ original condition, opens to 12 x 10-1/2. (no separate deck of playing cards only those shown in affixed position on the game board). An abacus-like device, called a "case keep", is employed to assist the players and prevent dealer cheating by counting cards. The operator of the case keep is called the "case keeper".& Faro (also known as Pharo, Pharaon, Faro Bank, "Bucking The Tiger", etc.) was the most popular gambling game of the 19th Century American Old West (1800's.) Prior to that it was one of the most popular gambling games of the 1700's in Europe. Faro descended from several very popular French and English card games, particularly Basset, the roots of which date back hundreds of years. Faro came to the US in the early 1700's and eventually became the most popular gambling game in the entire country for a whole century, from the early 1800's - early 1900's (far more popular than any other card game, including poker, at the time.) Even famous Lawmen, gunslingers, gamblers, and other characters like Wyatt Earp (and some of his brothers), Doc Holliday, Bat Masterson, Poker Alice, etc. were all Faro Dealers for much of their adult lives - and often held court behind their Faro Layouts in countless saloons across the West including the infamous towns of Tombstone and Deadwood., In the early days of Faro, all that was used to play the game was Playing Cards, (and often some special Figure Cards, Oppose Cards, etc.) and money to gamble with. Later, people found that a Layout Board could be devised that allowed players to utilize a common set of 13 cards (instead of using separate hands.) Layouts of varying quality and styles were made with any piece of board, or even a heavy cloth/baize/felt or blanket to glue the cards to. If no board or cloth was available, they'd just set the cards out on a table or flat space anyway and start up a game. Because of it's easy set up, and basic rules, Faro was very popular with cowboys and miners during the Gold Rush - Faro Banks were often set up in the mining camps by roving dealers called "sharpers" who took many a hard-earned gold mine stake from unlucky gamblers. Faro Banks were also commonly set up by soldiers during the Civil War; and the game was even played by British and Hessian soldiers as far back as the American Revolutionary War. Historically accurate Re-enactors for both wars often play the game to this day in their Living History displays.& As the years went on, Faro players eventually utilized commercially produced Faro Layout Boards and other specially made gear like fancy Dealer Boxes, abacus-like Case Keeper "Cue Boxes" (to keep track of played cards) and special Faro tables. Most of this gear was built by popular and skilled gaming equipment suppliers/makers such as Will & Finck, George Mason, A. Ball & Bro., H.C. Evans, F. Grote & Co., etc. But none of these snazzy devices were actually necessary to play the original simple game of Faro - they just made it slicker and the commercially produced items sure looked neat.& Some type of basic "Faro Bank", as active Faro games were called, existed in virtually every saloon, bar, gambling hall, private club and illegal gambling den in America for over one hundred years, not just in the rough and tumble West but also in the major cities like NY and Chicago.

Otherwise only minor wear to extremities. Inner hinges strenghthened. nternally very nice and clean. Light pencil underlinings, especially in volume II. XII, 257, (1, -errata) + XVI, 718, (2, -advertisements) pp. Ernst Bloch's owner's signature to both title-pages, together with the year 1906.. Ernst Bloch's copy of the rare first edition of Husserl's main work, one of the most important philosophical works of the 20th century. The "Logical Investigations" fundamentally changed philosophy and invoked the new philosophical era of the 20th century, -with this work Husserl founds phenomenology. Together with Heidegger's "Sein und Zeit" this must be considered the most important work of modern philosophy. Ernst Bloch (1885-1977), "the greatest of modern utopian thinkers" (Kovel), was born as the son of Jewish parents in Ludwigshafen. He studied philosophy, physics, German, and music in Munich and Würzburg and later became a main figure in Neomarxism. His two main works, "Geist der Utopie" and "Das Prinzip Hoffnung" were both written during times of exile, the first while in exile in Switzerland during the First World War, the second while in exile in America during the Second World War. Bloch became hugely influential thorughout the 20th century, providing the post-war world with hope, belief in the good of mankind, and our ability to re-establish our belief in the world and our ability to do good. The influence of his philosophy is very widespread, and his theories are used frequently within both politics and economics as well. For instance, much climate debate refers to his thought.Bloch was clearly influenced bu Marx and Hegel as well as other thinkers of that period. It is certain that he was also influenced by thinkers of his own time, but to which extent reamains more or less unknown. Not much research has yet been done on this and the answer remains to be found. "Bloch referred to his immersion in the "great philosophical rainbow from Leibniz to Hegel". It is more difficult to determine the influence of more recent writers. Bloch himself acknowledged the influence of the "Transcendental Realist" von Hertmann, and in an interview he linked together "Schelling; hegel, Leibniz and Eduard von Hartmann"; while Wayne Hudson surprised Bloch in a late interview when he suggested the influence of the process philosophy of Jacob Froschammer... Hudson, in fact, has unearthed a considerable range of likely contemporary philosophical influences on the young Bloch, from the theorist of "intentionality", Brentano and his disciple Meinong, through the neo-Kantains, Rickert, Cohen and Simmel, to the phenomenologists Husserl and Scheler. Bloch was thoroughly immersed in the German philosophical literature of his day."That Bloch should have read and owned a copy of what is arguably the most important philosophical work of the 20th century, the work that founded phenomenology, comes as no surprise. Husserl opens the work by attacking psychologism, and he then introduces his brand new philosophical method, which he had still by then not fully developed, but which came to influence all philosophy ever since -Phenomenology! Husserl himself calls this a "Work of Breakthrough" (see his preface to the second edition). In short, psychologism taught that logic itself was not an independent discipline, but a part of psychology, and it is this notion that Husserl gives its final blow in his logical investigations, -far more definitely than Frege had tried to some years earlier. Husserl now establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. The work is the starting point for mereology, the formal first order theory of wholes and their parts. Mereology is both an application of predicate logic and a branch of formal ontology.Husserl is now famous as the father of phenomenology, and he decisively influenced the likes of Heidegger, Sartre, Carnap, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Ricoeur, Derrida etc. etc. Among this list of eminent people, we can most likely count Bloch as well

London: Chatto & Windus, 1900.. Dark blue cloth, stamped and ruled in gilt. A very good, bright copy. The Dedication Copy of this work, inscribed by Swinburne to his cousin: "Mary C.J. Leith from A.C. Swinburne." According to Wise's assertions, Swinburne had intended to include the long dedicatory verse to her in the first edition of 1899, but it, and a prose introduction, were discarded in proof stage (see Wise's extensive description of the set of proofs, with these components present in manuscript, in his collection). The introduction did not make it into this second edition, but the dedication, "To Mrs. Disney Leith This Play Is Inscribed By Her Affectionate Cousin," and the dedicatory poem, finally did. The recipient, Mary Charlotte Julia Gordon (later Mrs. Disney Leith), was the author of a number of works including ORIGINAL VERSES AND TRANSLATIONS" (1895), "A BLACK MARTINMAS. A STORY" (1912), "LOCHLAN'S WIDOW" (1913), and "THE BOYHOOD OF ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE. PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS BY HIS COUSIN ... (1917). She also wrote a "new preface" to the1910 third edition of Swinburne's THE CHILDREN OF THE CHAPEL. WISE, SWINBURNE, I:474-479.

A file of retained correspondence from Jack London, 1900-1916. (His retained copies)

A manila folder, marked on one side "Letters from JL" and on the other: "Copy 2". 107 sheets, various papers, typed, carbon copies, copies of telegrams, etc. Written from Oakland, San Francisco, Hawaii, some other places. There are a couple of letters from 1900 which deal with his marriage to Bessie Maddern, and one from 1900 which mentions "Miss Kittridge" (Charmian London), in which she (Charmian) has later underlined her name and written in: "This is me! One is a 1903 love letter to Charmian, quite florid. There are long, very strongly worded letters to publishers and lawyers regarding business matters; letters to magazines about publication rights and such; also multiple copies of a 1913 form letter sent to magazines for publication info (with a corrected, revised copy), and a list of recipient magazines. There are three copies of a very strongly worded letter to a California judge from 1910. Many of the pages have corrections and amendations in pencil, also filing notes, etc. Some of the markings seem to have been made later, by Charmian or someone else, but some are clearly London's own small corrections and additions made at the time of writing. The notation "Copy 2" on the folder suggests that these comprise a second retained set of these letters, but this is not certain. A remarkable group of letters, filled with personal and business details, from London's own files.

“The Independence of the Continuum Hypothesis, Part I-II” [and] “Set Theory and the Continuum Hypothesis” in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Volume 50 (1963) and 5 (1964)

TWO MILESTONE PAPERS ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS. Two volume (in original wraps) first edition of Paul Cohen’s seminal contribution to set theory wherein he established the independence of the axiom of choice and the independence of the continuum hypothesis. Cohen’s efforts rank among the most important achievements in 20th century mathematics. Establishing the truth or falsehood of the continuum was the first in Hilbert’s famous list of mathematical problems, presented in an address in 1900. All attempts to prove or disprove Cantor’s conjecture failed until 1938, when Kurt Gödel showed that it was impossible to disprove the continuum hypothesis. Building upon Godel’s landmark work, Cohen developed the mathematical technique of forcing in order to prove consistency and independence in results. These two papers are the inaugural examples of the new technique of forcing. “If Godel’s construction of L had launched set theory as a distinctive field of mathematics, then Cohen’s forcing began its transformation into a modern, sophisticated one” (Kanamori, “Cohen and Set Theory,” Bulletin of Symbolic Logic, 14, 3, Sept. 2008, 352-374). Cohen’s new method was so helpful that within a decade, forcing grew to play “a crucial role in the transformation of set theory into a modern, sophisticated field of mathematics, one tremendously successful in the investigations of the continuum, transfinite combinatorics, and strong propositions and their consistency strength. In all these directions, forcing became integral to the investigation and became part of their very sense, to the extent that issues about the method became central and postulations in its terms, “forcing axioms”, became pivotal… The extent and breadth of the expansion of set theory henceforth dwarfed all that came before, both in terms of the numbers of people involved and the results established. With clear intimations of a new and concrete way of building models, set theorists rushed in and with forcing were soon establishing a cornucopia of relative consistency results, truths in a wider sense, with some illuminating classical problems of mathematics. CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to (10 x 6.75 inches). Both issues in original wraps, rebacked at the spine with minor wear. Very slight and light toning to the front wrap of Volume 51. Both issues housed in a handsome brown clamshell case gilt-lettered at the spine. The interiors are in near-fine condition.

        Collected Works of George Eliot

Boston,: Dana Estes, circa, 1900.. Octavo, 24 volumes, with frontispieces and engraved plates throughout; uniformly bound in contemporary gilt decorated polished calf by Blackwell, with marbled endpapers and top edges gilt, a fine set. Handsome edition of the works of Mary Anne Evans (George Eliot), one of the great novelists of the Victorian era.Renowned for her realism and evocative attention to detail, Evans wrote under the pseudonym of George Eliot to avoid the stigma of romantic flippancy associated with other female writers of the era. By all accounts and astute and intelligent woman, Evans associated with intellectuals such as Robert Owen and Herbert Spencer and undertook difficult translations including philosophical works by Feuerbach and Spinoza.Evans lived a controversial life and openly questioned her Christian upbringing while continuing to attend church on a regular basis. More problematically, she began a long-term open relationship with George Lewes, a married philosopher. Although the relationship challenged Victorian social conventions it did little to dampen her popularity (the pseudonym George Eliot had masked Evan's true identity as a female novelist for only a relatively short time). Her novels were widely enjoyed across class and social boundaries, and Queen Victoria herself was an avid reader. This is the illustrated cabinet edition, with fine engraved plates protected by tissue guards with printed captions. It includes fictional works, poetry and a selection of Evans' critical essays. Shortly before her decease in December 1880 Evans married John Cross, a man twenty years younger than herself. This set includes his posthumous memoir of Evans in three volumes, a work criticised by contemporaries as more a hagiography than a true biography of a complicated and controversial woman. The titles in this set of twenty-four volumes are: Felix Holt, The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch, Adam Bede, Daniel Deronda, Silas Mariner and other stories, Romola, Scenes of Clerical Life, Impressions of Theophrastus Such and Miscellaneous Essays, Poems in two volumes and the abovementioned biography by John Cross.

        Die Traumdeutung

Leipzig & Vienna: Franz Deuticke,, 1900. Octavo (229 × 145 mm). Near-contemporary dark red hard-grain half roan, dark red morocco label, marbled sides and endpapers. Brown calf-backed folding case. Extremities rubbed, rear joint cracked at foot, title page a little soiled in places and reinforced in gutter, small hole to title towards foot not affecting printed area; overall, a good copy. First edition of Freud's greatest single work, The Interpretation of Dreams, one of only 600 copies. "Die Traumdeutung contains Freud's general theory of the psyche, which he had developed during the past decade. Using his refined understanding of the operation of the unconscious, Freud interpreted dreams on the basis of wish-fulfilment theory and discussed displacement (the appearance in conscious thought of symbols for repressed desires), regression, Oedipal impulses, and the erotic nature of dreams. Although this was his first major work on normal psychology, Freud gave an unprecedented precision and force to the idea of the essential similarities of normal and abnormal behaviour, opening up the door to the irrational that had been closed to Western psychology since the time of Locke" (Norman). "It contains all the basic components of psychoanalytic theory and practice" (PMM). The book was published on 4 November 1899 (though post-dated by the publisher) but sold so slowly that the second edition did not appear until nine years later
