Autograph scientific notes on capillarity

1900. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph scientific notes on the kinetic theory of gases. 2ff. [Zurich, summer 1910.] 178 x 124 mm. A few marginal chips and tears, some mended with clear tape, but very good. From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008).The calculations on this sheet appear to be closely related to similar notes that Einstein made in preparation for a lecture course on the kinetic theory of gases that he held at the University of Zurich in the summer semester 1910 (Einstein, Collected Papers, Vol. 4, Doc. 4, pp. 192-195, 238-239). On the recto, Einstein juxtaposes two expressions for the flow of viscous fluids and gases through pipes. In the upper half of the page, Einstein sketches a derivation of Poiseuille?s law for laminar flow through circular tubes. The mass flow F is proportional to the fourth power of the radius of the tube P, directly proportional to the mass density and the pressure difference , and inversely proportional to the viscosity R. In the bottom half, he sketches a derivation of a similar relation for the case of rarefied gases flowing through very narrow tubes. Here the flow is proportional only to the third power of P, and it is found to be dependent on temperature T. The latter relation was derived and empirically verified by the Danish physicist Martin Knudsen (1871-1949) in a paper of 1909. On the verso, Einstein derives another relation that is due to Knudsen which says that in gases of very low pressure, a difference in temperature causes a difference in pressure; specifically, it is found that the ratio of pressures is proportional to the square root of the ratio of temperatures. This relation was found and investigated by Knudsen in 1910. Einstein had a long-standing interest in capillarity phenomena, which was the subject of his first two scientific papers, as well as in the kinetic theory of gases and statistical mechanics. He would meet Knudsen in person a year later, in 1911, at the first Solvay Congress in Brussels. We are grateful to Dr. Tilman Sauer of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology for providing suggestions about the content of these notes and their apparent place in Einstein?s body of work. $60000

The little Oriental seat in front of her made by ourselves and of old pin cusions and a packing box and two little rugs. Isn't it pretty? The back is all padded-". On verso of Violet and Hester: "I at work and Hester sitting talking to me-". Photos are slightly age faded, a few corners and sides with small chips, else very good. London. 12 February 1900. London. 12 February 1900.. Two pages, in ink, on two panels of folded quarto sheet of letterhead (30, Wellington Court, Albert Gate). Folded for mailing, else near fine. To Samuel G. Blythe (1868-1947), then editor of the BUFFALO ENQUIRER: "Objections? Indeed no. On the contrary I shall be glad. I shall now lay for the young man who called the other day, & who seemed to know a great many things -- & to lack delicacy in some little degree: for, while smoking my bad cigars & warming himself at my good fire he suddenly up & said, without any humane & softening preparations for the remark, that my Christian Science article had cost the Cosmopolitan 10,000 subscribers. He made me feel pretty bad, but I will transfer that sensation to him, now, when I catch him. And I will be sarcastic, & tell him Mr. Walker wants to lose another 10,000 & knows by harsh experience how to go about it. With my kindest regards to Mr. Walker, & best wishes to you & him & the magazine ...." Signed: "Sincerely Yours S.L. Clemens." Clemens refers to his article in the October 1899 issue of COSMOPOLITAN, "Christian Science and the Book of Mrs. Eddy," and to either J.B. Walker (owner) or E.D. Walker (editor) of the periodical at the time, and may have been writing Blythe in response to a request for reprint permissions for Clemens' then controversial article.

Zarys teoryi kinetycznej ruchów Browna i roztworów metnych.Kraków: Akademia Umiejetnosci, 1906. First edition, offprint issue.

Very rare first and original edition of this famous paper on Brownian motion (more commonly known in the form of its German translation Zur kinetischen Theorie der Brownschen Molekularbewegung und der Suspensionen published two months later in the Annalen der Physik 21: 756-80). "If Marian Ritter von Smolan-Smoluchowski had been only an outstanding theoretical physicist and not a fine experimentalist as well, he would probably have been the first to publish a quantitative theory on Brownian motion." (Pais).

"From about 1900 Smoluchowski worked on Brownian movement. He wished to use experimental data to verify the theory he had obtained, a desire complicated by the confused situation of experimental research. In the meantime Einstein, in papers of 1905 and 1906, had presented a solution to the problem. Smoluchowski then decided to publish his results in 'Zarys kinetycznej teorii ruchow Browna' [the offered paper] ('An Outline of the Kinetic Theory of Brownian Movement,' 1906), which presented his different method.

"Einstein started from general relations of statistical physics, an approach that was universal but did not lend itself to visualization. For example, Einstein said nothing of the collisions between a Brownian particle and the surrounding molecules. Smoluchowski started by examining the effects of successive collisions and obtained a final formula that differed little from Einstein's. Smoluchowski's further works in this field extend through an examination of the Brownian movement of a particle undergoing the influence of a quasi-elastic force to the Brownian movements of macroscopic bodies. " (DSB).

"Smoluchowski is probably best known to the aerosol community for equations which now carry his name - the Smoluchowski Equations. Derived within the theory of Brownian motion, they also form the foundations of stochastic processes and modern statistical physics. In 1906 Smoluchowski published his mathematical model of Brownian motion. Scientists today, approaching these issues from a stochastic point-of-view, very frequently apply the methodical legacy of Smoluchowski. The main point in the Smoluchowski theory of Brownian motion is the finding that the proper measure of the motion is not the mean velocity of the particle in the suspension, but the mean square of its shift from an initial position. This quantity was published by Einstein (1905) from general laws of diffusion and statistical mechanics and, on the other hand, by Smoluchowski (1906) by detailed analysis of the mechanism of particle motion. In his work, Smoluchowski acknowledged Einstein's approach, but emphasized that his 'method is more direct and hence more convincing than Einstein's'. This was also later stated by Einstein who said that 'Smoluchowski delivered particularly beautiful and descriptive theory of Brownian motion', a piece of work of great relevance to aerosol science. Smoluchowski's work on Brownian motion marks indeed the start of the study of stochastic processes. In 1908 he proposed a theory of critical opalescence which explains the fluctuations in the refractive index of a fluid, liquid or gas. Chandrasekar recognized 'Marian Smoluchowski as the Founder of the Physics of Stochastic Phenomena'." (Szymanski, Marian Wilhelm Theofil von Smoluchowski).. 8vo (260 x 177 mm), uncut and unopened in original printed wrappers (small pencil inscription in red to fron wrapper 'a)'), pp [2] 25 [1:blank]. Illustrated by Kate Greenaway. London: MacMillan & Co., 1900. First edition of Greenaway's final book, done when she was ill. Sixteen chromo lithographs, of which six are full page. Musical illustrations in text. [vi] 1-74 [75-76] pp. Oblong octavo, publisher's tan cloth binding, decorated and printed in black and red, all edges tinted. The scarce dust-jacket is in good condition overall, but edgeworn and lightly dust-soiled, showing small loss at fold- in corners, and is chipped at heel and crown. Pasted between front endpapers is a fragment of a letter from the author, possibly addressed to Greenaway. It reads, "really very like one of my three children. I quite defer to your more experienced judgement, but if possible would prefer the blue colouring," and is signed, "I am yours very truly M. v. Arnim." Russell's first marriage was to the Count von Arnim-Schlagenthin. (Schuster & Engen 25, Thomson 161).

A bit of light wear, including the text block pulling away from the staples, else a very good copy. The books were identical in format with several artists contributing color illustrations. All of the books repeat a marvelous title page illustration, an ornamental border on the last page and endleaves, all overtly Art Nouveau in style. They are all lovely examples of period graphic design. This title is one of the most desirable in the series, due to the illustrations of Lefler and Urban, two of the leading artists of the Jugendstihl movement in Vienna.

Smaller Faro Game case used by the player (called "case keeper")

Chicago: Manufactured by HC Evans & Company, [1900]. Hinged wood frame. Very Good+. circa 1900? Manufactured by HC Evans & Company, Chicago. Hinged wood frame with printed cards, pips and bone beads. Top of the line handcrafted Faro Case keeper with the wood having some marks but overall in very good+ original condition, opens to 12 x 10-1/2. (no separate deck of playing cards only those shown in affixed position on the game board). An abacus-like device, called a "case keep", is employed to assist the players and prevent dealer cheating by counting cards. The operator of the case keep is called the "case keeper"., Faro (also known as Pharo, Pharaon, Faro Bank, "Bucking The Tiger", etc.) was the most popular gambling game of the 19th Century American Old West (1800's.) Prior to that it was one of the most popular gambling games of the 1700's in Europe. Faro descended from several very popular French and English card games, particularly Basset, the roots of which date back hundreds of years. Faro came to the US in the early 1700's and eventually became the most popular gambling game in the entire country for a whole century, from the early 1800's - early 1900's (far more popular than any other card game, including poker, at the time.) Even famous Lawmen, gunslingers, gamblers, and other characters like Wyatt Earp (and some of his brothers), Doc Holliday, Bat Masterson, Poker Alice, etc. were all Faro Dealers for much of their adult lives - and often held court behind their Faro Layouts in countless saloons across the West including the infamous towns of Tombstone and Deadwood. In the early days of Faro, all that was used to play the game was Playing Cards, (and often some special Figure Cards, Oppose Cards, etc.) and money to gamble with. Later, people found that a Layout Board could be devised that allowed players to utilize a common set of 13 cards (instead of using separate hands.) Layouts of varying quality and styles were made with any piece of board, or even a heavy cloth/baize/felt or blanket to glue the cards to. If no board or cloth was available, they'd just set the cards out on a table or flat space anyway and start up a game. Because of it's easy set up, and basic rules, Faro was very popular with cowboys and miners during the Gold Rush - Faro Banks were often set up in the mining camps by roving dealers called "sharpers" who took many a hard-earned gold mine stake from unlucky gamblers. Faro Banks were also commonly set up by soldiers during the Civil War; and the game was even played by British and Hessian soldiers as far back as the American Revolutionary War. Historically accurate Re-enactors for both wars often play the game to this day in their Living History displays. As the years went on, Faro players eventually utilized commercially produced Faro Layout Boards and other specially made gear like fancy Dealer Boxes, abacus-like Case Keeper "Cue Boxes" (to keep track of played cards) and special Faro tables. Most of this gear was built by popular and skilled gaming equipment suppliers/makers such as Will & Finck, George Mason, A. Ball & Bro., H.C. Evans, F. Grote & Co., etc. But none of these snazzy devices were actually necessary to play the original simple game of Faro - they just made it slicker and the commercially produced items sure looked neat. Some type of basic "Faro Bank", as active Faro games were called, existed in virtually every saloon, bar, gambling hall, private club and illegal gambling den in America for over one hundred years, not just in the rough and tumble West but also in the major cities like NY and Chicago. It was one of the few games played by all classes - virtually everyone, of all races, sexes and means. Faro was so popular that a lot of people lost a lot of money playing it and other gambling game...

        Concerning Children

Boston: Small, Maynard & Company. VG+/NONE. 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 49, 43, 60. 1st edition/1st printing. 1 of only 2000 copies printed. This author was quite well-known in her day as a feminist and an activist for women's rights, and as an author writing about women's issues. She was the grandniece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her best known story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," is about a woman who suffers from a mental breakdown due to the birth of her child and the prescription of isolated bed rest from her physician husband, which paralleled some of the events of her own life. She co-edited the Pacific Coast Women's Press with socialist Helen Campell. When she turned to lecturing, she became well known for her discussion on women's topics. With the book "Woman and Economics" in 1898, she emerged as a spokesperson on such topics as women's perspectives on work and family. She co-founded the Women's Peace Party in 1915 with activist Jane Addams. Bound in dark blue cloth with gilt printing and gilt & green decorations. The half-title page is the first page and there is a very narrow paper-only slit at the gutter; however, the book is very firmly bound and very tight. It is straight, clean, and has no handwriting or damage to the text paper. There are small areas of wear to the binding cloth at the tips of the corners and spine ends, a trace of rubbing to the "N" and "C" in 'Concerning" on the front panel, and the cloth and printing of the spine is a bit dulled. A very scarce book, and really in quite excellent condition. ; 7-1/2" x 4-7/8"; 298 pages .

        Das Wesen Des Christentums.

Leipzig, J. C. Hinrichs, 1900. 8vo. Contemporary green half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Very light brownspotting to front free end-paper and title-page, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. (4), 189, (3) pp.. The very rare first edition of Harnack's seminal and hugely popular work on the essence of Christianity, which later gave birth to the movement of Liberal Protestantism. Today it is widely regarded as being one of the most influential works of modern protestantism. "No other book has so deeply stirred the world of theological thought as Harnack's work on the essence of Christianity" (The Catholic University bulletin, 9. Binding, P. 206)."Harnack expounded what he believed to be the core of the Christian religion, set free from the encrustations of dogma that had been laid down through the centuries. The core is to be reached by penetrating back to the teaching of Jesus himself, and Harnack represented this teaching as proclaiming the fatherhood of God, the infinite worth of the human soul, and the ethical ideal of the kingdom of God. The supposedly original gospel of Jesus is also claimed to be the only version of Christianity that can make sense for modern minds, since it is free from theological and metaphysical mystifications." (Borchert, Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Vol. 4, P. 228)."These lectures of 'The Essence of Christianity' by the then professor of church history at Berlin University were received with an enthusiasm unparalleled for centuries in the field of religious pamphleteering. They proclaimed the fundamental concord of the tenets of the early Church as preserved in the non-Roman Churches with the social and economic morality of the twentieth; and innumerable reprints and translations broadcast this message of liberal Protestantism all over the world. [...] Harnack's influence upon the intellectual life of Germany was enormous". (PMM 390)The vast popularity of the of the book is attested to by the well documented fact that at one point in 1900 the railway terminal in Leipzig was brought to a standstill by goods trains loaded with printed copies of the book!PMM 390

Old Times Re-visited in the Borough and Parish of Lymington, Hants. Second Edition

Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1900. Roy. 8vo., Second and Best Edition, with portrait frontispiece, title in red and black, and 21 plates (one double-page); original buckram gilt, gilt back, bevelled edges, uncut, covers lightly age-marked else a very good, internally spotless copy. King's work, first published in 1879, immediately established itself as the standard popular reference on the ancient New Forest town; local interest generated the inevitable additions and corrections, but the planned second edition, incorporating the numerous addenda, was deferred by the author's death. This best edition, compiled and published by the author's son from his father's meticulous notes, benefits from much new material and many fresh illustrations. This copy was formerly in the library of Professor [Sir] J H Biles, the eminent naval architect [of 'Titanic' Enquiry fame], and bears his elegant blind-embossed art nouveau bookplate (with press-mark in manuscript) on front paste-down. John Harvard Biles (1854-1933) was apprenticed at Portsmouth Dockyard, studied at the Royal School of Naval Architecture and joined the Admiralty in 1877. His talents were quickly recognised and in 1880 (at the age of only 26) he was appointed chief designer to the major shipbuilder J&G Thomson on Clydebank where he created the revolutionary designs for the 'City of Paris' and 'City of New York'. In 1883 he left to join the foundling consultancy established by Sir Edward Reed, where he quickly became a driving force (the consultancy continues to the present day as Sir J H Biles & Co.). In 1891 he was awarded the Chair of Naval Architecture at Glasgow University (then perhaps the most prestigious such appointment in the world) where he devoted himself to teaching and consultancy on a world-wide scale. IN VIEW OF HIS EMINENCE IN THE FIELD OF SHIP DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, PROFESSOR BILES WAS AN ASSESSOR IN THE ENQUIRY INTO THE LOSS OF RMS 'TITANIC' AND SUBSEQUENTLY HE SERVED ON THE BOARD OF TRADE ENQUIRY INTO LIFEBOATS AND LIFE-SAVING APPLIANCES WHICH AROSE AS A RESULT OF THE TITANIC LOSS.For his services to the 'Titanic' Enquiry and naval architecture in general, Biles was knighted in 1913

Sketches from Voyage of Whaling Schooner Penelope, 18 Apr 1900 - 7 Sep 1902

1900. Approximately 7.5" x 9.75". Illustrations range in size from 4.5" to 6.5" high and 6" to 7.5" wide. Un-paginated. One page of text describing the history of the Penelope and the names of the crew members that sailed on this voyage followed by an illustrated title page plus 50 additional full-page watercolors made during the voyage which began in San Francisco. Each illustration is dated and captioned. The 51 paintings are bright and vivid with some minor marginal smudges. The self-made book is holding together nicely although three empty pinholes along the spine suggest that at one time it was additionally bound with a string. The cloth cover is soiled and damp-stained. The hinges are cracked and the rear fixed endpaper is partially missing. This is a superb whaling journal illustrated with exceptionally well done watercolor paintings by the ship's boatsteerer (harpooner), John Bertonccini. Although the text entries are short and concise, each of the illustrations is truly worth a thousand words. Illustrations include harpooning whales, towing whales, hoisting blubber, harpooning walrus, poisoning polar bear, and more. Bertonccini was known by his peers as "Johnny the Painter" for his work in creating theatrical scenery for the plays performed by whalemen while they wintered over in the Arctic at Herschel Island. Although in this journal Bertonccini signs his last name with only one 'c', library and museum references consistently use two. Some of his works are in the collections of the Kendall Whaling Museum (now, I believe, merged with the New Bedford Whaling Museum), the Peabody Essex Museum, and the J. Porter Shaw Library. This is a very impressive and beautifully depicted rare record of whaling life at the turn of the last century. . Soft Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Bertonccini, John Julius. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, 1900. First ed. Folio, 23, 1 pp., with 50 full-page photogravure plates. Publisher's cloth, with the arms of the City of Glasgow embossed in gilt on the upper cover, slightly faded along the top edge of the upper board. Newly re-backed with calf and morocco spine label in gilt. A few plates show one or two spots of light foxing in the blank margins. A very good copy. The city of Glasgow contained some of the worse slum in Europe in the mid nineteenth century. In 1866 the City finally passed an act which enabled it to destroy the decaying buildings of the old city center. Thomas Annan was commissioned to record the buildings, streets and alleys before they were demolished. The resulting images are a haunting record of poverty, yet beautifully rendered examinations of architecture and atmosphere. Forty of the images were first published as carbon prints in 1878 as PHOTOGRAPHS OF OLD CLOSES, STREETS, &C. TAKEN 1868-1877. Annan continued to make pictures of these locals, and in 1900 this edition with additional images was published utilizing the photogravure process. Although not stated, it is presumed that the photogravures were made by John Craig Annan, his son, who is considered one of the master practitioners of the process. TRUTHFUL LENS #4 "One hundred copies were specially printed for the Corporation of Glasgow in a cloth binding, gilt embossed with the arms of the city." In William Buchanan's J.CRAIG ANNAN: SELECTED TEXTS AND BIBLIOGRAPHY, he states that there were a total of 250 copies printed with two imprints, that of MacLehose comprising 150 copies, and 100 copies with the imprint of T& R Annan & Sons. This work is regarded as a monument of photographically illustrated social documentation.
