ORIGINAL SIGNED PEN AND INK ARTWORK

Undated.. Undated pen and ink drawing on paper circa 1900, image size approximately: 145 x 105 mm, 5½ x 4 inches. It depicts a little girl standing on a sandy shore in a long checked dress with a frill at the hem, wearing a straw hat, looking down at a beautiful dressed doll obviously left behind by some little rich girl. The caption, not visible on the image, is "One day she found a great treasure". Farmiloe has signed the bottom right corner "Edith Farmiloe". A charming image but we have failed to discover whether or not it was done for a children's book. Fine condition, in a cream mount, ready for framing. Edith Farmiloe (active 1893-1908), well known for her sympathetic and humorous drawings of slum children and ragamuffins, illustrated several of her own books plus a few Dumpy books and one for E.V. Lucas. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. POSTAGE AT COST.

        FATHER TUCK';S FAIRY LAND. PANORAMA

Rapheal Tuck & Sons, Ltd: London, 1900. Very Good binding. A remarkable production with 36 chromolithographed figures, numbered 1-19 and 1a - 17a.         [EARLY 20th-CENTURY PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, CONSISTING OF TWENTY-FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN IN VLADIVOSTOK CIRCA JUNE 1900, EACH WITH CONTEMPORARY HANDWRITTEN ANNOTATIONS IN GERMAN

[Vladivostok. 1900].. Twenty-four photographs (3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches each), each print matted on heavy paper of commercial photograph album. Early 20th-century German photograph album with textured paper boards and spine. Front board decoratively embossed with image of a flower and the words, "Moderne Lichtbildere." Top and bottom of spine, edges of boards, and outer joints moderately worn. Mounts separating, but very good. Images very clean overall and in very good condition. An album of twenty-four original photographs taken in Vladivostok in June 1900. The snapshot- size images are each matted one per page in a German-made photograph album, and each image is inscribed in a contemporary hand in German. The photographs include views of the port, Russian naval ships and numerous other vessels, the city center, the post office, street scenes, buildings and houses (including a German brewery), and pictures of everyday life. Due to its location in the Russian Far East on the coast of the Sea of Japan and near both the Chinese and Korean borders, Vladivostok was a settlement with numerous international residents and visitors, and this heterogeneity is recorded in this album. Half of the photographs are of people, including images of Russians, Chinese, and Koreans. Photographs of local Chinese residents predominate, with images of a waterman filling his wagon, a fruit seller in the market, another seller in the market with his measuring scale, and other laborers. Other images in the album include Korean children playing, various neighborhoods and locales, and a family portrait (complete with cow) in front of a house. A fine turn-of-the- century album consisting of original contemporary photographs of Vladivostok, with numerous images of the local population. Due to its strategic location, Soviet Russia later kept the port under the highest security, and any photographs of it are uncommon.

A very nice set, internally very clean and fresh. SCARCE. THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE ZOOLOGICAL STUDY OF SOUTH AFRICAN WILDLIFE AND A RARE SCLATER WORK. The author states that he has chosen as the limit of the sub-continent the Rivers Cunene and Zambesi on the West and East coasts respectively, remarking, “on the whole, this is a more convenient line than the Tropic of Capricorn.” The volumes are prefaced by an important bibliography of works dealing with the mammals described in the text. The information included is expansive; it encompasses classical, popular, and vernacular names of the specimens, references to works on zoology and the mammals, and a general description of the animals, including notes on their size, distribution, history, and habits.         Concerning Children

Boston: Small, Maynard & Company. VG+/NONE. 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 1st edition/1st printing. 1 of only 2000 copies printed. This author was quite well-known in her day as a feminist and an activist for women's rights, and as an author writing about women's issues. She was the grandniece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her best known story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," is about a woman who suffers from a mental breakdown due to the birth of her child and the prescription of isolated bed rest from her physician husband, which paralleled some of the events of her own life. She co-edited the Pacific Coast Women's Press with socialist Helen Campell. When she turned to lecturing, she became well known for her discussion on women's topics. With the book "Woman and Economics" in 1898, she emerged as a spokesperson on such topics as women's perspectives on work and family. She co-founded the Women's Peace Party in 1915 with activist Jane Addams. Bound in dark blue cloth with gilt printing and gilt & green decorations. The half-title page is the first page and there is a very narrow paper-only slit at the gutter; however, the book is very firmly bound and very tight. It is straight, clean, and has no handwriting or damage to the text paper. There are small areas of wear to the binding cloth at the tips of the corners and spine ends, a trace of rubbing to the "N" and "C" in 'Concerning" on the front panel, and the cloth and printing of the spine is a bit dulled. A very scarce book, and really in quite excellent condition. ; 7-1/2" x 4-7/8"; 298 pages .

Maurice Bertrand, Cornucle, Gustave Chouchou, Julia, D'Arcy, Marthe Helly

[c. 1900]. Size: 570 x 385 mm. Framed size 740 x 385 mm. Lithograph. Printed colour. Good condition. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), known as Sem, attained a high level of success with his wonderful portrayals of Paris at the turn of the century. This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the Century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable, particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition, in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This beautiful print is a part of the Album Vert published in c.1900.

        Viktor Rydberg

About 1900. A photo engraved copper plate 64 x 46,5 cm + image printed from the plate 54,5 x 40 cm (the wole sheet 75,5 x 56 cm). Some scratches and small damages to the surface of the cooper plate. The paper image with a couple of creases to the blank margins. Nice condition.. Here we have a recently discovered photogravure plate depicting the famous swedish writer Viktor Rydberg. A newly printed image from the plate is also supplied. The printing plate was manufactured around the year 1900, after an original painted by Albert Edelfelt in 1895. Edelfelt is one of Finlands finest artists. Reproduction of art by photoengraving had its breakthrough in the 1880s. and was fully developed by the turn of the century. The method was acctually first pioneered by Fox Talbot in the 1850s. Basically, a photograph of the painting is transferred to an aquatinted and light sensitized copper plate by appplying light through a photo positive. The plate is then etched whereafter you can print copies from the plate. Surviving printing plates are very rare

First edition. 410pp (last blank), [4]pp adverts for WSC titles, [2], 32pp publishers catalogue (dated 7/00) at rear; frontis portrait of General Ian Hamilton, folding map at rear, 9 other maps & plans in text. Original dark red cloth, gilt title upper right of the upper board, surrounded by blind-stamped border, gilt titles on spine; a little light silverfish flecking, mostly down the fore-edge of the upper board. Original black endpapers. The edges and the first few leaves with spots of foxing, owner's name on preliminary blank. Old tape stains in the gutters of the frontis and half-title - it rather looks like the frontis had come adrift and been taped in at the half-title, but no sign of the tape and the frontis has evidently been neatly tipped in back where it belongs, with its tissue guard intact, but minor wear along its fore-edge. Otherwise this is a very good clean copy. ***The second part of Churchill's reports from the South African War: "a continuation of those letters to the Morning Post... which have lately been published under the title 'London to Ladysmith via Pretoria'. " .

        LORD JIM

1900. A Romance. New York: Doubleday & McClure Co., 1900. Original light green cloth decorated in dark green. First American Edition of what is arguably Conrad's greatest work. This copy has the title page in the second and usual (cancelled) state: at the time this was being published, Doubleday & McClure was dividing into two entities (Doubleday Page and McClure Phillips), with uncertainty as to which firm would retain the rights to LORD JIM. Thus, in the first (integral) state the copyright is "1900 by Doubleday, Page & Co.", while in the cancelled state the copyright is "1899 and 1900 by Joseph Conrad." ~This is a near-fine copy (spine very slightly sunned, light wear at the extremities). With the penciled signature of Conrad bibliographer Walter E. Smith. Cagle A5b(2).
