The Baths of Caracalla - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1900.

Alma-Tadema zelf zei over dit werk: ?It does seem to me that The Baths of Caracalla does show the different sides of my art, does exhibit its best qualities at their best... The picture, like much of my recent work, is a picture of ancient Rome as it was, and for this work of reconstruction I have had to get my information mainly from archaeological drawings. I was occupied with the picture for two years, and when it came back to my studio from the Academy I found that it wanted some altering and I worked at it again for some time with help of pencil drawings and models.?De kollossale zuil in de voorstelling moet gezien worden als een symbool van onvergankelijkheid, uittorenend boven de zorgeloze fratsen van de badende figuren.Inspiratie voor de voorstelling haalde Alma-Tadema vermoedelijk uit een gedicht van Alfred Lord Tennyson: ?A Court, compact of lucid marbles, bossed with the lengths of classic frieze, with ample awnings gay, betwixt the pillars and great urns of flowers, the muses and graces, grouped in threes.Prijs: ?4.150,- (incl. lijst).

        Chinoiseries / Costumes d'Antan

(France / China 1900 - Octavo. (22)pp. Album of Chinese landscapes in original watercolors, facing depictions of women's antique costumes painted on silk, interleaved with tissue. "Chinoiserie" refers to European art characterized by imagery of a romanticized China, a notion that similarly underpins the genre of costume books, which presented foreign fashion through a European lens. It appears that the brightly-colored landscapes in this album were done later than the silk paintings, most likely by a Western artist. Included are market scenes, depictions of boats on a river, and pagodas. These European stylings contrast with the depictions of Chinese fashion opposite them, bringing a stark juxtaposition of East and West not often seen in costume books. The delicate paintings of costumes on silk are done in a much more traditional Chinese style. Great attention is paid to details, such as the knotted red and green silk cords worn around the women's waists, floral hair ornaments, and the subtle patterns of their loose-sleeved robes. One woman carries a basket of flowers, another poses beside a deer, and one is dressed as a warrior with a sword, in a jacket and loose trousers, tying on her knee guards. The costumes are colored in soft shades of blue, pink, and green. Very fine in soft gilt-titled white calf with raised bands on the spine, blind-tooled with decorative rules. Housed in a flannel-lined box. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sailing Alone Around the World. Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian.

New York: The Century Co., 1900 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine and front board in silver and green, top edge gilt, others uncut. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco and cloth slipcase. Contemporary globe-shaped advertisement for the book and various newspaper articles about the voyage and Slocum's life laid in. Spine slightly darkened, small mark to upper tip of front cover, some speckling to rear cover, internally fresh. An exceptionally nice copy. Half-tone frontispiece, 64 illustrations. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to American Polynesian ethnologist and diplomat William Churchill, and his wife Llewella, on the front free endpaper: "To Genl and Mrs Churchill in kind recollection of our meeting in Samoa 1896 and again New York this April 5th 1900. Joshua Slocum." A fascinating association copy for this "classic account of a small boat voyage" (Toy): William Churchill (1859-1920) was appointed American consul general to Samoa in 1896, in which capacity he hosted Slocum when he made landfall there on 16 July 1896, a meeting Slocum records in this book: "There was a lady's hand in things about the consulate at Samoa. Mrs Churchill picked the crew for the general's boat, and saw to it that they wore a smart uniform and that they could sing the Samoan boatsong, which in the first week Mrs Churchill herself could sing like a native girl" (p. 154). Churchill was a brilliant scholar, and was acknowledged as the foremost authority on Polynesian culture by local chiefs and foreign missionaries alike, but was widely considered an ineffective administrator, and was recalled in the lead-up to the Second Samoan Civil War (1898-9) as his reports were considered overly sympathetic to tribal concerns. Churchill suffered a nervous breakdown as a result, but during his recuperation wrote his most famous work, Polynesian Wanderings (1912), which analysed the languages of the Polynesian peoples and demonstrated that they had originated in Indonesia.         Also sprach Zarathustra. Ein Buch für alle und keinen. Expl. Nr. 394 / 530 * G A N Z P E R G A M E N T - H a n d e i n b a n d

S.l. (France), n.d. (ca. 1900). Very good. 8vo. 72 pp. numbered in pencil in upper corners, of which 3 numbered pages are blank; front and back of the textblock are padded with unnumbered blank leaves. Contemporary French "repousse" binding in the Art Nouveau style: large interlocking leaves and flowers, with gilt fillets; comb-marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, smooth spine unlettered. A volume of great charm and considerable bibliographical interest: the binding was executed in the "Cuir-cisele" (cut leather) manner. Cuir-cisele is a decorative technique in which a knife is used to cut a low relief design into the leather binding. The positive forms are left intact while the negative space has been cut away. "On the leather surface we see a design, sometimes simple, sometimes elaborate, which is not impressed on it with stamps or dies, but worked freely and directly by the craftsman by means of a simple pointed tool, blunt or sharp. In this simple way he either cut, scratcched, or merely engraved by pressure the outline of his decorative design; very often he would then stipple the background with some other simple tool, so as to make the contours of his design stand out more clearly" (SOURCE: E.P. Goldschmidt, "Some Cuir-Cisele Bookbindings in English Libraries" in: The Library, Fourth Series, Vol. XIII, no. 4, March, 1933, p. 337). The text is likewise curious: the pages were created by means of lithography, and colored throughout with watercolor by an expert hand. No title-page was ever bound herein. The entire production seems to have been a very personal one. The prayers include: Prière pendant la Sainte Messe / Prière pendant l'Offertoire / Préface commune / Mémoire des vivants / Mémoire des défunts / Oremus / Messe de mariage. In excellent state, suitable for exhibition and study.

Some general wear & soiling to album cloth, with front joint starting in the bottom 1/2". Age-toning to leaf extremities. Photographs occasionally exhibit a touch of fading, but generally clear & sharp. An overall VG - VG+ item.. 25 leaves of stiff hinged card stock, with a ~3-3/4" [9.6 cm] x 6" [15.2 cm] albumen photograph to each side [i.e., 50 total], each housed within a ornamental border printed in blue. Running title: Exposition Universelle de 1900. Each image captioned underneath [in French]. Album oblong format: 6-3/8" [16 cm] x 9" [23 cm]. "The Exposition Universelle of 1900 was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 14 April to 12 November 1900, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. The style that was universally present in the Exposition was Art Nouveau. The fair, visited by nearly 50 million, displayed many machines, inventions, and architecture that are now nearly universally known, including the Grande Roue de Paris Ferris wheel, Russian nesting dolls, diesel engines, talking films, escalators, and the telegraphone (the first magnetic audio recorder)." [Wiki]. This album one, no doubt, of a number of commercially produced photograph albums documenting the Exposition. The volume contains, primarily, general exterior views of the major exposition buildings including the Grand Palais, Petit Palais, the Eiffel Tower and many of the numerous Palais des Nations. A rather scarce item.. we don't find this specific album recorded on OCLC, though 2 OCLC records list Albert Hautecoeur Exposition photo ablums, each in a single copy [the first, with 18 leaves, at the CSL (Sutro) and the second, as part of a pair of albums with 76 images total, at the Getty].

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

A.L. Burt Company c.1900, New York - Complete set of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Octavo, 6 volumes, three quarters morocco, titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels gilt ruled, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, frontispiece, illustrated. With notes by Dean Milman, M. Guizot and Dr. William Smith. In near fine condition. An exceptional set. "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" (PMM 222). "For 22 years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly 1500 years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, 146-7). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Farewell Banquet to the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Hopetoun ... First Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. Grand Hall, Hotel Cecil, London, October 3rd, 1900. The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Selbourne, in the Chair

London, Fradelle & Young, Photographers, 283 Regent Street, W., 1900. A vintage high-gloss gelatin silver photograph (258 x 307 mm) on the original captioned mount, recently remounted and matted with acid-free materials (visible mounted image size approximately 390 x 440 mm). The mount is lightly marked, with minimal evidence of light surface silverfish activity; apart from some light surface scuffing, the photograph is in excellent condition. Given the number of guests at the dinner (a contemporary newspaper account suggests a figure of 700, albeit in two rooms), and the fact that Fradelle & Young 'Specialised in hotel and restaurant group photography of dinners & receptions' (PhotoLondon Database of 19th-Century Photographers), one might expect to find this photograph recorded in collections, if not on the market. Apparently, not so ...

Zur Theorie des Gesetzes der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum.

Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1900. First edition of the first appearance of Planck's revolutionary quantum theory, arguably the most important development in twentieth-century physics. "In this important paper [Planck] stated that energy flowed not in continuous, indefinitely divisible currents, but in pulses or bursts of action [or quanta]" (Dibner). This hypothesis "contradicted the mechanics of Newton and the electromagnetics of Faraday and Maxwell. Moreover it challenged the notion of the continuity of nature" (PMM). In this paper Planck uses his eponymous constant h, the quantum of action, to explain the observed distribution of energy as a function of frequency in the radiation emitted by a black body. Although Planck's new theory was initially resisted by many in the scientific community, it gained acceptance after Einstein used the constant h to explain the photoelectric effect in 1905, and after Niels Bohr applied it in 1913 to explain the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. The importance of quantum theory is impossible to overstate: it not only revolutionized theoretical physics, but also technology and hence everyday life: modern inventions based on quantum theory include the laser, the transistor, the electron microscope, and magnetic resonance imaging - the entire electronics industry is based on it. "In 1859-60 [Gustav] Kirchhoff had defined a blackbody as an object that reemits all of the radiant energy incident upon it; i.e., it is a perfect emitter and absorber of radiation. There was, therefore, something absolute about blackbody radiation, and by the 1890s various experimental and theoretical attempts had been made to determine its spectral energy distribution--the curve displaying how much radiant energy is emitted at different frequencies for a given temperature of the blackbody. Planck was particularly attracted to the formula found in 1896 by his colleague Wilhelm Wien at the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (PTR) in Berlin-Charlottenburg, and he subsequently made a series of attempts to derive "Wien's law" on the basis of the second law of thermodynamics. By October 1900, however, other colleagues at the PTR, the experimentalists Otto Richard Lummer, Ernst Pringsheim, Heinrich Rubens, and Ferdinand Kurlbaum, had found definite indications that Wien's law, while valid at high frequencies, broke down completely at low frequencies. "Planck learned of these results just before a meeting of the German Physical Society on October 19 [1900]. He knew how the entropy of the radiation had to depend mathematically upon its energy in the high-frequency region if Wien's law held there. He also saw what this dependence had to be in the low-frequency region in order to reproduce the experimental results there. Planck guessed, therefore, that he should try to combine these two expressions in the simplest way possible, and to transform the result into a formula relating the energy of the radiation to its frequency. "The result, which is known as Planck's radiation law, was hailed as indisputably correct. To Planck, however, it was simply a guess, a "lucky intuition." If it was to be taken seriously, it had to be derived somehow from first principles. That was the task to which Planck immediately directed his energies, and by December 14, 1900, he had succeeded--but at great cost. To achieve his goal, Planck found that he had to relinquish one of his own most cherished beliefs, that the second law of thermodynamics was an absolute law of nature. Instead he had to embrace Ludwig Boltzmann's interpretation, that the second law was a statistical law. In addition, Planck had to assume that the oscillators comprising the blackbody and re-emitting the radiant energy incident upon them could not absorb this energy continuously but only in discrete amounts, in quanta of energy; only by statistically distributing these quanta, each containing an amount of energy hν proportional to its frequency ν, over all of the oscillators present in the blackbody, could Planck derive the formula he had hit upon two months earlier. He adduced additional evidence for the importance of his formula by using it to evaluate the constant h (his value was 6.55 × 10−27 erg-second, close to the modern value of 6.626 × 10−27 erg-second), as well as the so-called Boltzmann constant (the fundamental constant in kinetic theory and statistical mechanics), Avogadro's number, and the charge of the electron. As time went on physicists recognized ever more clearly that--because Planck's constant was not zero but had a small but finite value--the microphysical world, the world of atomic dimensions, could not in principle be described by ordinary classical mechanics. A profound revolution in physical theory was in the making. "Planck's concept of energy quanta, in other words, conflicted fundamentally with all past physical theory. He was driven to introduce it strictly by the force of his logic; he was, as one historian put it, a reluctant revolutionary. Indeed, it was years before the far-reaching consequences of Planck's achievement were generally recognized, and in this Einstein played a central role. In 1905, independently of Planck's work, Einstein argued that under certain circumstances radiant energy itself seemed to consist of quanta (light quanta, later called photons), and in 1907 he showed the generality of the quantum hypothesis by using it to interpret the temperature dependence of the specific heats of solids. In 1909 Einstein introduced the wave-particle duality into physics. In October 1911 Planck and Einstein were among the group of prominent physicists who attended the first Solvay conference in Brussels. The discussions there stimulated Henri Poincaré to provide a mathematical proof that Planck's radiation law necessarily required the introduction of quanta--a proof that converted James Jeans and others into supporters of the quantum theory. In 1913 Niels Bohr also contributed greatly to its establishment through his quantum theory of the hydrogen atom. Ironically, Planck himself was one of the last to struggle for a return to classical theory, a stance he later regarded not with regret but as a means by which he had thoroughly convinced himself of the necessity of the quantum theory. Opposition to Einstein's radical light quantum hypothesis of 1905 persisted until after the discovery of the Compton effect in 1922. "Planck was 42 years old in 1900 when he made the famous discovery that in 1918 won him the Nobel Prize for Physics and that brought him many other honours. It is not surprising that he subsequently made no discoveries of comparable importance. Nevertheless, he continued to contribute at a high level to various branches of optics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, physical chemistry, and other fields. He was also the first prominent physicist to champion Einstein's special theory of relativity (1905)" (Britannica). "Planck had the physical interpretation of his radiation law in hand before the middle of November 1900, but he presented his results first at the meeting of the German Physical Society in Berlin on 14 December 1900 in a contribution entitled 'Zur Theorie des Gesetzes der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum' ('On the Theory of the Law of Energy Distribution in Normal Spectrum'). In this contribution he outlined in short 'the most essential point of the whole theory as clearly as possible' (p. 238) ... In his Atombau und Spektrallinien (1919), Arnold Sommerfeld called 14 December 1900 the 'birthday of quantum theory' ('Geburtstag der Quantentheorie', p. 213). He referred in particular to the fact which Planck had considered to be the 'most essential point' of his derivation of the blackbody radiation law: namely, the assumption that the energy is distributed among the cavity resonators only in integral multiples of finite energy elements ... Planck himself continued with his attempts to deepen the theoretical foundations and to elucidate the physical interpretation of his theory of blackbody radiation. In a paper, which he submitted to Annalen der Physik in January 1901 ['Über das Gesetz der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum,' 4 Folge, 4 Band, pp. 553-563], Planck again presented the theoretical derivation of his radiation formula, introducing certain changes in his earlier treatment" (Mehra & Rechenberg, pp. 50-53).
