Morton's School for Boys Latin Text Book + Monochrome Photograph of his Cape Cod Farm House in Winter [Signed]

circa and circa 1955. 1900 - Conrad Aiken's own Easy Latin Lessons text book published by Allyn and Bacon, Boston and Chicago circa 1898 in which the young 9-10 year old Conrad had practiced his signature a number of times to the front end papers and a few simple drawing / doodles inside the book. Latin lessons were indeed advertised as being offered at Morton's School for Boys, which was in easy walking distance from his parental home. Separately inside the book is a small privately taken 5½'' x 3½'' monochrome photograph of Conrad Aiken's Cape Cod farm house in winter, the reverse of which says 'To wish you a Merry Christmas and to first-foot you [or whatever!] for Hogmanay! Our loves to you both and will write soon - Conrad. Bobby good letter much enjoyed.' Robert Mackechnie [Bobby] and Margaret Mackechnie [nee Barnard] English painter friends of Conrad Aiken. Until the second world war Aiken lived mostly at Winchelsea, opposite the muddy creek from where the Mackechnie's lived on the Rye side. By the way, Margaret Barnard's sister Alison Mary Barnard was a formidable Lady and networker. She lived at No. 4, Wimpole Mews, London and 'ran' The Centre of Spiritual and Psychological Studies. Here many Peace seeking authors, artists of very different plumage came together including Walter de la Mare, T. S. Eliot, Kathleen Raine, G. K. Chesterton [early on], Laurens van der Post and many more. No doubt Conrad Aiken too, who was a lifelong friend of T. S. Eliot, no outward publicity, quite the opposite of the extrovert Bloomsbury Bohemian hack hub. We currently hold in stock 15 other books by this author. AMERICAN LITERATURE

Feste Des Lebens Und Der Kunst, Eine Betrachtung Des Theaters Als Hochsten Kultursymbols ( Festival of Life and Art: a Consideration of Theater as the Highes Cultural Symbol

Leipzig: Eugen Diederichs, 1900 Leipzig: Eugen Diederichs, 1900. Large 8vo, thick gray wrappers with title printed in black, flanked with design of gilt flames rising from urns. Slight stain on back cover else fine. Decorative frontispiece with a pair of caryatids bearing faceted crystals, title page, two borders and initial by Behrens. Printed in pale blue, crimson and brown on cream paper. Dedicated to the Kunstler-Kolonie, an artists' colony at Mathildenhohe near Darmstadt founded by Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse, which Behrens joined in 1899. He was a pioneer of 20th century architecture, an industrial designer, and in his earlier career a graphic artist and designer of jewelry, porcelain and furniture. This work is a Jugendstil theater manifesto heralding the advent of the new decorative style and its relation to the theater. It is a critique of the naturalist/realist theater style of the 19th century stage and its illustion of a fixed, single point perspective. Behrens believed that a dynamic theater space should overcome the rigid distinction between actor and audience and sublimate art and culture over raw nature. Building on Wagner's notion of the total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), the new theater was to combine all the arts under a single roof, dominated by beautiful speech and movement, elevating art into life. Aynsley, Graphic Design in Germany, page 61:"(Behrens) gave equal consideration to typographic composition, letter initials and illustrations, as well as paper quality and binding." Harvard, Turn of a Century, 108: "Characteristic of Behrens and the Germans is the geometric control of the design with the repetitive curvilinear forms subordinated to a strict framework.". Printed and Pictorial Wrappers. Fine. Illus. by Peter Behrens. Large 8vo.

        The Grey Fairy Book

London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1900. Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board gilt, black coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated frontispiece, vignette title page, 31 plates, and illustrations in the text throughout by H. J. Ford. Very slight dulling to the gilt at spine but on the whole the gilt and cloth respectively well-defined and retaining its tone, very slight rubbing to the tips, some internal spotting mostly restricted to early and late leaves, a nice copy, square sound and in excellent condition. First edition, first impression, of the sixth instalment in Lang's Fairy Book series, with tales "deriving from many countries - Lithuania, various parts of Africa, Germany, France, Greece, and other regions of the world" (Lang's preface), many of them highly phantasmagorical and strange. Lang's preface contains the intriguing observation, "The stories, as usual, illustrate the method of popular fiction. A certain number of incidents are shaken into many varying combinations, like the fragments of coloured glass in the kaleidoscope. Probably the possible combinations, like possible musical combinations, are not unlimited in number".

        Japanese Hand-Painted Lacquer Binding, A

, c. 1900. c. 1900. A Rare and Beautiful Japanese Lacquer Binding[JAPANESE BINDING]. A Japanese Hand-Painted Lacquer Binding on an unused Photograph Album. [Japan: c. 1900, end of Meiji-era]. 10 5/8 x 15 3/8 inches (270 x 393 mm). Silk-string bound black lacquered wooden boards, beveled, with central hand-painted scene of Chinese taste-houses and temple in a mountainous countryside in red, white, gray, pale blue, green, and gold, with mother of pearl onlays to rooftops and snow peaks, the whole bordered in maki-e gold. Foliate painted frame with red and white painted grapes. Brown alligator skin joints and backstrip. Illustrated rice-paper endleaves. Twenty-four blank charcoal gray cardstock leaves with tissue guards. Small chip to lacquer at lower right corner of upper board, otherwise a very fine example. An extremely attractive blank photo album, never used, and a lovely potential gift to another or to yourself to preserve treasured memories. The sap of the lacquer tree, today bearing the technical description of "urushiol-based lacquer," has traditionally been used in Japan. As the substance is poisonous to the touch until it dries, the creation of lacquerware has long been practiced only by skilled dedicated artisans. As in other countries where lacquerware has traditionally been produced, the process is fundamentally quite basic. An object is formed from wood, sometimes leather, paper, or basketry. Lacquer is applied to seal and protect the object, and then decoration is added. Generally, three coats (undercoat, middle-coat, and final coat) are used, the final coat sometimes being clear rather than black lacquer, in order to allow decorations to show through.Alongside the red and black lacquers, it is common to see the use of inlay, often seashells or similar materials, as well as mica or other materials. The application of gold powder is known as maki-e, and is a very common decorative element.

This is a remarkable copy, in near fine condition. Housed in a dark green cloth clamshell case. Provenance: Bradley Martin with the bookplate of Mildred Greehill on the front paste-down.“[Over] a century after this book’s first publication, few Americans are unfamiliar with the image of Dorothy being carried by a Kansas cyclone into the magical land of Oz, where she meets the scarecrow, the tin woodman, and the cowardly lion. Their adventures looking for the Emerald City and the wizard have become a permanent part of American popular culture. Baum’s work, originally self-published with striking illustrations by William Warren Denslow, was an immediate success with children; its popularity now is largely based on the 1939 film, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy. In his introduction to the book, Baum argued that ‘the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as ‘historical’…the time has come for a series of newer ‘wonder tales.’…Modern education includes morality, therefore the modern child needs only entertainment in its wonder-tales.…’ The Wonderful Wizard of Oz lays claim to a place among the turning points in the secularization of American children’s literature” (The New York Public Library’s Books of the Century).Blanck, Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 111-113. Original pictorial cloth. 17.5 by 13.5 inches (44 by 35 cm); [8], 181 pp., with 42 fine, bright chromolithographic plates of military costume, ships, and troops on parade, drilling, on horseback, reconnoitering and scouting, bivouacking, in the field and barracks, engineering -- in short, these are far more than static costume illustrations but rather ones that depict action scenes. Published by Werner, which was a leading German American publisher in the late nineteenth century that began by publishing a German newspaper in the U.S. This, being a bilngual publication, was perhaps the company's most opulent book that clearly was aimed at appealing to Teutonic patriotism of the immigrant community well before the First World War squelched this type of fervor. Similar chromolithography "Wort und Bild" books were also being published in Germany itself, such as ones celebrating the Franco-Prussian War,yet this particular title is artistically superior to much of the genre. It might also be observed that the genre was not unique to German culture. (I.e. Ogden's Uniforms of the Army, depicting American army costume throughout the nineteenth century, published just a few years earlier.) Again, for dynamism and beauty of the image, this title is hard to beat. Some binding wear, and joints repaired at extremities. Interior is tight and extraordinarily clean. Plates are pristine, and even the tissue guards may be described so.

Red and Black: A Story of Provincial France

London: Downey & Co. Ltd, 1900. London: Downey & Co. Ltd, 1900. First UK trade edition. First published in France in 1831 and translated into English by E. P. Robins in 1898 in a limited edition. This translation by Charles Tergie is effectively the first trade edition of Stendahl's masterpiece. Original decorative black cloth, lettered in gilt and stamped in red. A nearly Fine copy of this scarce book with just minor wear at the spine ends, foxing to the end paper and a gift inscription from Thomas George Banks to a friend in the Ministry of Munitions, with the Ministry's stamp. A decidedly scarce book with no copies for sale, besides this one, and none in the auction record for either of the two early English translations. A handful of copies of the 1898 translation appear in institutional collections, but just a single copy of this edition, in the British Library according to OCLC.& & Stendhal';s surprisingly modern bildungsroman about the rise and fall of the romantic Julian Sorel, who attempts to climb the rungs of French society and surpass the expectations of his modest, rural upbringing. The novel is not only an exploration of Julian';s own psychological and spiritual struggles but also a satire of the clergy and French society in general. "The Red and The Black, like much of Stendhal';s work, was not appreciated in his own day. It was only after Stendhal';s death that critics began to realize what a revolutionary stylist he was. He';s currently credited as one of the fathers of psychological realism due to the space he devotes to his characters'; inner lives. Stendhal is notoriously hard to translate and this translation is still thought of by many to be the best. "Stendhal';s mind was of the first order... he wrote his two novels, which so few people have read, in a spirit of fearless liberty." (Joseph Conrad).

        LADYSMITH TREASURY

, 1900. 1900. Very Good. CONRAD, JOSEPH. "AN OUTPOST OF PROGRESS" in THE LADYSMITH TREASURY. London: Sands & Company, 1900. First edtion. 8vo. 343pp. Blue, brown black and gilt-stamped green cloth, t.e.g., A bit of foxing, light soil and wear overall very good. This is the first appearance in a literary collection of Conrad's "An Outpost of Progress," a short tale of ghastly adventure set in an upper reach of what may be the Congo River. (It had an earlier periodical appearance in the June-July 1897 issue of Cosmopolis.) Conrad was one of sixteen authors who contributed stories without fee to this fund raising publication. The profits from the sale of this book went to the Mayor of Ladysmith for relief of the suffering citizens of that town in Natal, now part of South Africa. During many months in 1899-1900, the citizens of Ladysmith were besieged by the Boers under Petrus Joubert, until British forces finally were able to arrive and relieve the town.         Vale Press Shakespeare] WORKS: 39 Volumes Including SONNETS and POEMS

London: Hacon & Ricketts at the Vale Press, 1900-1903. London: Hacon & Ricketts at the Vale Press, 1900-1903. Limited Edition, one of 310 copies. Hard Cover. Royal Octavo. Charles Ricketts. Published by Hacon & Ricketts at the Vale Press; printed under Charles Ricketts's supervision at the Ballantyne Press from April 1900 to June 1903; opening page of each play is decorated with one of three full-page borders designed by Ricketts along with numerous half borders embellishing the text throughout each volume; bound in green cloth and stamped in blind with a design by Ricketts; gilt title on the spine; printed on handmade paper with mermaid watermark using the Avon font designed especially for this set and arguably the most elegant and readable of his three typefaces. This was the first fine press edition of Shakespeare's Works. While initially scheduled to start work in December of 1899, a fire at the Ballantyne Press destroyed not only the work to date on Hamlet, but a sizable portion of Ricketts's work. The fire was largely responsible for the closing of the Vale Press in 1904, though over the next few years Ricketts restarted and completed the Vale Shakespeare and about a dozen volumes to which he was already committed. The final volume of the Vale Shakespeare, Henry VIII was the last book issued from the Press except for Bibliography of Books Published by Hacon and Ricketts after which the matrices and punches were symbolically cast into the Thames. The Vale Shakespeare remains among the finest edition of Shakespeare's works and is increasingly difficult to find complete. This set is in Very Good condition with some toning to the spines as usual; spine ends softened and lightly frayed on occasion; contents are clean and largely free of the foxing that is so often found--only a few volumes are lightly foxed; a number of the volumes have been carelessly opened leaving a rough top-edge on some pages, a relatively minor issue with only one exception--there is one large closed tear that runs from the top edge to the inner margin of one leaf of “Antony and Cleopatra.” Watry B44.

This is a remarkable copy, in near fine condition. Housed in a dark green cloth clamshell case. Provenance: Bradley Martin with the bookplate of Mildred Greehill on the front paste-down."[Over] a century after this book?s first publication, few Americans are unfamiliar with the image of Dorothy being carried by a Kansas cyclone into the magical land of Oz, where she meets the scarecrow, the tin woodman, and the cowardly lion. Their adventures looking for the Emerald City and the wizard have become a permanent part of American popular culture. Baum?s work, originally self-published with striking illustrations by William Warren Denslow, was an immediate success with children; its popularity now is largely based on the 1939 film, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy. In his introduction to the book, Baum argued that ?the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as ?historical? the time has come for a series of newer ?wonder tales.? Modern education includes morality, therefore the modern child needs only entertainment in its wonder-tales. ? The Wonderful Wizard of Oz lays claim to a place among the turning points in the secularization of American children?s literature" (The New York Public Library?s Books of the Century).Blanck, Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 111-113.
