Horse Race Betting Tickets and Bag of a Reputed Felonious Bookmaker.

[South Shields, England, circa 1900-1905].. Collection of approximately 300 original betting cards, produced and intended for soliciting bets, sixty years before gambling was made legal. Three complete of sets of illustrated printed betting tickets, 100, 200, and 500 numbered series, respectively, each measuring 95 x 50 mm. Featuring an engraved illustration of English jockey Frederick Archer, a famously daring and successful Victorian rider who won most or possibly all of the great English turf prizes and accumulated a large fortune. Tickets are printed in Leeds, with stamp in bottom margin reading J. Richardson, "Bookmaker's Outfitter," Sporteries Leeds. Contained in the shoulder bag Charles Drew, English bookmaker who was arrested for charges of illegally soliciting bets on at least one occasion in 1901. Leather shoulder bag measuring 340 x 240 mm, with original strap, working clasps, inner pockets, his name in gilt to one side. Very good condition.. Little is known of gambling bookie Charles Drew, but that his residence and business were based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, in Northeast England, he married Ann Brown on 19 Jul 1852 at the South Shields St. Hilda parish church, and that he actively, illegally solicited gambling on streets by circulating betting cards for horse races. On 15 March 1901, the South Shields Daily Gazette reported on Drew's illegal activities: "At South Shields to-day, Charles Drew, bookmaker, was charged with betting East Street on Thursday last." Detective Sanderson and other officers deposed to the defendant being in the street taking bets in the usual way from 12 p.m. till 3 p.m. on the day named..." Several decades later, the gambling pastime which was already firmly entrenched in British culture would finally become a legal pastime. 1 September 1960, BBC: "... 1 January 1961 gambling for small sums will be legal for games of skill... betting shops will take gambling off the streets... At the moment, anyone who wants to place a bet on the horses has to demonstrate they have enough credit to set up an account with a bookmaker and do their dealings by telephone...."

        Philosophie des Geldes

Leipzig: Duncker & Humblot,, 1900. Octavo (234 × 158 mm). Contemporary pebble grained caalf aand marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt, marbled edges. Joints lightly rubbed, small ink splash to fore edge. A very good copy. First edition of Simmel's "seminal work" (Herbert Frankel in The New Palgrave). "Simmel's philosophy tried always to find in single appearances or instances of life, the meaning of the whole. As one of these he selected money. He saw it in functional relativistic terms: the symbol of the spirit, forms and thought of modern civilization. He viewed money not in mechanical terms but as a conflict between our abstract conceptions of money and the social trust on which it is based. He elucidated the moral basis of the monetary order and warned that it might be subverted through our tendency to think of money in purely abstract terms. If it was through John Maynard Keynes that the revolt against the predominant 19th-century view of money was made respectable, it was Simmel who had laid bare the causes of that revolt." (ibid.)

Caricature of the Author Philip James Bailey (1816-1902)

. Near Fine. N.d., circa 1900. The pen and ink ink drawing is 20 by 11.5 cm. Depicted is Philip James Bailey, who is carrying under his arms his 1839 magnum opus, the very long poem, "Festus", admired by Tennyson and other leading poets of the day, and supposedly an influence on James Joyce. The work was Bailey's only success, and he continued to add to it during his long life following its initial appearance. It is this pattern of accretions which Ford would appear to be lampooning in this caricature. Ford is best remembered today for illustrating the dozen Andrew Lang colored fairy book series, and next for illustrating works by Scott, Kipling and many others. He also did free-standing painting, and some of his work belongs now to museum collections. Matted.

Lebensrad.

Kanten gering berieben, ansonsten bemerkenswert wohlerhaltenes Exemplar.

ORIGINAL SIGNED PEN AND INK ARTWORK .

Undated.Undated pen and ink drawing on paper circa 1900, image size approximately: 145 x 105 mm, 5½ x 4 inches. It depicts a little girl standing on a sandy shore in a long checked dress with a frill at the hem, wearing a straw hat, looking down at a beautiful dressed doll obviously left behind by some little rich girl. The caption, not visible on the image, is "One day she found a great treasure". Farmiloe has signed the bottom right corner "Edith Farmiloe". A charming image but we have failed to discover whether or not it was done for a children's book. Fine condition, in a cream mount, ready for framing. Edith Farmiloe (active 1893 - 1908), well known for her sympathetic and humorous drawings of slum children and ragamuffins, illustrated several of her own books plus a few Dumpy books and one for E.V.         Black and white photographs of Mozambique c. 1900.

      - The city of Beira was developed by the Portuguese Mozambique Company, which was founded in 1891 as a royal company in this Portuguese colony. In Beira the Company ran the post office & public administration, and founded a bank, but took advantage of local conscripted labor. Beira also played an important role as a key port and railroad terminus for the British land locked territories of Zambesia, Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Beira Railway was formed in 1892; by 1890 Cecil Rhodes had already pushed into the region around Salisbury (Harare) and the settlers there were demanding dependable transport. These photographs date from the colonial period in which the Mozambique Company administered Beira. Photographs taken by C. E. Hogg. Thirteen b&w photographs, 4 3/4 x 3 3/4" with titles handwritten on the verso. The titles are as follows: 'Beira' (a view of the city taken from the Indian Ocean); 'a street in the native village', 'men gathering coconuts', 'mother and child', 'Mozambique natives, the elder age 12 + 2 years married, the younger a rescued slave child'; 'a rescued slave girl'; 'Mozambique' (no further title; photo is of sailboats pulled up on a beach); 'Mozambique' (no title; photo is city harbor, taken from the water looking toward the city); 'hotel proprietor, Beira'; 'Gardens, Mozambique'; 'Mozambique boys'; 'Market, Mozambique'; and 'Mozambique hospital'. A few marks at the corners of some photographs, where they were removed from an album; one photo with a diagonal tear ('Gardens'), o/w quite bright.

ARBORETUM AMAZONICUM: Iconographia dos mais importantes vegetaies espontaneous e cultivados da regi?o Amazonica.

Museo Paraense [Museo Goeldi], 1900-1906., Par? [Bel?m[: - [40] pp. First edition; stiff, manila, pictorial wrappers, printed black and white; spine unprinted; unbound sheets with text and 40 gravure black and white photographic plates with captions. Four 'decadas' complete; each with ten number plates, each plate with a single page of text in Portuguese, French, and German. Published by the Museu Paraense de Historia Natural e Ethnographia. The photographic plates are each numbered and printed on heavy card stock. They depict common varieties of trees, water plants, and low shrubs that are common to the region around what is today Bel?m and the island of Maraj? Some plates are sepia-tone, others various tones of black and white common to the period. The third and fourth decadas were published in 1906 and have "Museo Goeldi" on the head line. Huber was the director of the museum's botanical department. The work was printed in Zurich, Switzerland. There is no introduction present. Decada I and Decada II: the plates have no photographic credit (assumed to be by Huber); the text is in Portuguese and French by Huber. Decada III: has a selection of excerpts from botanical journals in French, German, and English. One in English from the Botanical Gazette, Jan. 1902 is the shortest (a paragraph) and states: ". . . each species is represented by at least a page of text. . . in parallel columns, and a plate. The plates are exceptionally fine, being heliotypes from remarkably good photographs. Many of the plants are represented in their natural setting, and the views of tropical plant formations are some of the finest seen. This series of illustrations is highly prized for its artistic and scientific excellence. In addition to illustrations of prominent genera, several plates represent characteristic plant societies, as a savanna and two illustrations of river borne vegetation. The composition of the plates range from OK to excellent?most are quite good. I.e., the photographer was able to give the reader an excellent idea of the overall shape, leaf design, bole, and character of the trees pictured. The two plates of victoria regia are only adequate whereas the hevea, palms, and castanha are excellent. It is interesting that the trees, all normally nearly impossible to differentiate when they are found in the rain forest, are photographed in isolation?as if they were somehow found without adjacent or contiguous growth?or the nearby trees had been cut down to isolate each of those photographed. Decada I wraps faded, spine chipped, corners chipped; Decada II wraps lightly soiled, spine, edges chipped; Decada III nearly fine; Decada IV wraps closed tears, surface loss; all excellent internally; see additional images provided.         Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse Vols I-IV

London and New York: FREDERICK WARNE & CO. LTD. Fair 4 volume set in plain cloth bindings, undated but probably early 1900's, with 316 high quality colour printed plates. Classed as 'fair' because of the binding but contents are very clean and in very good condition. Each volume with frontispiece and 78 colour plates; Vol IV with index, 691pp in all (consecutive numbering). The cloth bindings have fading to spines and boards. They are quite tight but a section in Vol IV is loosening at the bottom gather and the tightness is probably more due to lack of use than quality of binding. There is some reinforcement to the gutter of a couple of pages in Vol I; sellotape ends on the fep and a pencil signature to the reverse of the final page. Vol II has some repair to the half title page. Vol IV has a plate bound out of order but all are present. A nice clean set of an authoritative work.

        Caricature Self-Portrait "Little Breeches

. Near Fine. N.d., circa 1900. The pen and ink, lightly tinted, drawing is 20 by 15 cm. It is an amusing self-portrait, all big blocky head, boots, and suspenders suspended over the artist's pate. Not really characteristic of this versatile artist's work, yet a splendid work of great economy and humor, somewhat in the vein of Edward Lear. Ford is best remembered today for illustrating the dozen Andrew Lang colored fairy book series, and next for illustrating works by Scott, Kipling and many others. He also did free-standing painting, and some of his work belongs now to museum collections. Matted.

        London to Ladysmith

Toronto: The Copp, Clark Company, Ltd., 1900. First Canadian edition. Hardcover. Very good. This book is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This is not only a very good copy of the Canadian first edition, but also of minor bibliographic note. Churchill's fourth published book, London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later rendered him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". Both U.S. and Canadian editions were published in June 1900. The Canadian is easily the scarcest of the three. This Canadian edition was bound in tan cloth with an illustrated front cover like its British counterpart, and is easily distinguishable by a red fleur-de-lis on the spine, thinner binding, and black title and author print. The attractive binding seems prone to both hinge breaks and severe spine toning. Here is a very good copy, better than most we see. The binding remains firm and tight. Moreover, the spine is only modestly toned compared to most copies we see, with the fleur-de-lis still bright and spine lettering quite clear. The binding has a forward lean and shows mild wear to the corners and spine ends, two small moisture stains on the lower front cover, and modest soiling to the rear cover. The contents show no spotting. Maps and plans are intact. The sole previous ownership mark is a beautifully inked previous owner name on the first free endpaper, faded with age and dated "27th June/1900". This is the earliest date known in a Canadian first edition and thus of bibliographic significance. When Ron published his excellent Bibliography in 2006, the earliest known inscription in a Canadian first edition was 28 June 1900. (See Cohen, Vol. I, A4.3.a, p.97) Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.3.a, Woods/ICS A4(bb), Langworth p.56.
