Photograph Album Documenting Hunting and Outdoor Life in the Western United States

Colorado & California 1900 - This album contains approximately 110 photographs, most around 4" x 5". About half are glossy, sepia-toned albumen photographs. The other half are matte, black and white photographs, possibly silver, salt, and/or platinum prints as some have deep un-faded blacks with crisp greys, and others have a metallic sheen at the image edge. Many of the sepia photographs were numbered and dated "1904" in the negative. The album has some wear and some of the photo borders have been mended. The photos are in nice shape; all have been slipped into album slots, and a few seem to have been glued in place. The extremely well-done images are impressive and include views of mountain terrain and rushing waters in the Rockies, dugout shelters, hunting party campsites, tent-living, campfire cooking, men with rifles, men on snowshoes, men with backpacks, men feeding baby mountain goats, horseback hunting, dead game (bear, deer, elk, an antelope loaded on a horse, a mounted big horn sheep's head), cleaning a bear skin, bundles of pelts, the summit of and views from Pike's Peak, the Garden of the Gods, naked men in a stream, Yosemite Valley, giant Sequoia Trees, log cabins, and more.

As such, this port was host to large numbers of foreigners from all walks of life: business men, missionaries, and sailors, both merchant marine and military. As such, it was also a favorite place for the men to make a visit to the infamous Yoshiwara where their most basic instincts were the pleasure of young Japan- prostitutes. The majority were very very young girls sold into the houses to rescue their starving farm families or to pay gambling debts. This is truly one of the rarest and most sought after items of Africa, Africa travel, Africa hunting. Clean and crisp internally. The book has been rebound in half black gilt leather over thick cloth boards (preserving the snakeskin endpapers). The original (albeit soiled) front cover has been bound in the rear). Other than that it is unlikely that the book was handled.

Contending Forces: A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North & South

The Colored Co-operative Publishing Co, Boston 1900 - frontis, illustrations, 402p. Original decorated red cloth. 20cm. Recased. New endpapers. Backstrip reinforced when recased. Original backstrip worn at ends and darkened. Covers otherwise reasonably attractive with some soiling and wear. No Jacket. Illustration and cover design by R. Emmett Owen. Most copies of this novel are found in similarly-decorated green cloth but we are unaware of any established binding priority. Hopkins was born in Portland, Maine. "Contending Forces" was her first novel and the only one published in book form during her lifetime. She wrote extensively over the next few years, mainly for the "Colored American Magazine" for which she also served as an editor. Ill health and financial need curtailed her writing career and Hopkins returned to less glamorous but more financially secure work as a stenographer. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Zur Theorie des Gesetzes der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum (Theory of the Law of Energy Distribution in the Normal Spectrum).

Johan Ambrosius Barth, Leipzig 1900 - in: Verhandlungen der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft im Jahre 1900, Volume 2, pp. 237-45. Octavo. First Edition.Bound with Volume 1 (1899) and Volume 3 (1901). Also containing Planck's paper Ueber eine Verbesserung der Wien'schen Spectral-gleichung (Over an improvement on the Viennese Spectral Equation), pp. 202-4.Planck's famous first announcement of his Quantum Theory - a theory that revolutionized physics in particular and science in general in the 20th Century. It was for this discovery that Planck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1918.As a new professor at the University of Berlin, Planck embarked in the fall of 1900 on a mundane sounding calculation of the spectral characteristics of the glow from a heated object. Physicists had good reason to think the answer would elucidate the relationship between light and matter as well as give German industry a leg up in the electric light business. But the calculation had been plagued with difficulties. Planck succeeded in finding the right formula, but at a cost, as he reported to the German Physical Society on Dec. 14. In what he called ''an act of desperation,'' he had to assume that atoms could only emit energy in discrete amounts that he later called quanta (from the Latin quantus for ''how much") rather than in the continuous waves prescribed by electromagnetic theory. Nature seemed to be acting like a fussy bank teller who would not make change, and would not accept it either. [DUE TO ABE SPACE LIMITATIONS, OUR COMPLETE DESCRIPTION CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED HERE.
