London to Ladysmith via Pretoria, finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is the British first edition, first printing of Churchill?s fourth published book, finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full red morocco. The elegant goatskin binding features a hubbed and gilt ruled spine bearing the title and author.  There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and gilt ruled turn-ins framing striking, marbled endpapers.  Even the gold, red, and black head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect.  ?Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England? is gilt-stamped on the lower front pastedown.  This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, became recognized as one of the leading bookbinders in London.  Like Churchill himself, Sangorski & Sutcliffe endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity.  This truly gorgeous example of the fine binder?s craft is a reminder to collectors that not all fine bindings are created equal.  Condition is better than near fine. The binding is clean, bright, square, and supple with no discernible wear. The contents are excellent, worthy of the binding. All maps and plans are intact. The spotting endemic to this edition is very light, primarily confined to prelims and a few blank inner margins. We find no previous ownership marks. Searching for flaws, we note only a few scuffs to the page edge gilt. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election".         Ian Hamilton's March, finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is the British first edition, first printing, first issue of Churchill's fifth published book, finely bound in full red morocco goatskin by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The elegant binding features beautifully grained goatskin with a hubbed and gilt ruled spine bearing the title and author. Condition is better than near fine - square, clean, bright, tight, and supple. Searching for flaws, we note only a barely discernible hint of soiling to the upper corners. The contents are worthy of the binding - particularly bright and crisp with no spotting or previous ownership marks. All maps and plans are intact, as is the frontispiece and tissue guard. Ian Hamilton's March was the second of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa during the Boer War. His daring escape less than a month later rendered him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill's first book of Boer War despatches, London to Ladysmith via Pretoria, was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Ian Hamilton's March completes Churchill's coverage of the Boer War, publishing 17 letters to the Morning Post, spanning 31 March through 14 June 1900. The narrative in Ian Hamilton's March includes the liberation of the Pretoria prison camp where Churchill had been held. Though a companion and sequel to London to Ladysmith, it is notably different in content, and scarcity. The first printing saw only 5,000 copies - half as many copies as London to Ladysmith. Where Ladysmith bore a lavishly illustrated binding, Ian Hamilton's March was bound in red cloth matching the style of Churchill's first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force - fitting, as these were the first and last Churchill first editions published by Longmans, Green, and Co. Sangorski & Sutcliffe here proffer a considerable aesthetic upgrade to the original red cloth. While London to Ladysmith via Pretoria had swiftly published Churchill's dispatches in the wake of his capture and escape, for Ian Hamilton's March "the texts of the originally published letters were more extensively revised and four letters were included which had never appeared in periodical form" (Cohen, A8.1.a, Vol. I, p.104). Churchill effected these revisions while on board the passenger and cargo steamer Dunottar Castle, which was requisitioned as a troop ship, en route home to England. Arriving home from South Africa in July 1900, Churchill spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The British first edition of Ian Hamilton's March was published just a few weeks later. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A8.1.a, Woods/ICS A5(a), Langworth p.59

The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night.

Burton Club, 1900. Manuscript edition with original leaf in Burton's hand in volume one. Octavo, 16 volumes. Bound in full green leather, elaborately gilt-stamped to the spine, front and rear panels with Arabic script, raised bands. Top edges gilt and gilt turn-ins. Each volume illustrated with a double suite of frontispieces, after Albert Letchford; the second being colored. In near fine condition. The manuscript leaf is a book review by Burton, of a French translation of Johannis de Capua's Latin translation of a Hebrew translation of the Panchatantra. An exceptional set. Richard Burton was an accomplished geographer, explorer, orientalist, ethnologist, diplomat, polylinguist and author who is best known for his translation of Arabian Nights. One of the great Arabists of his day, he had long wanted to publish an unexpurgated version of the "Arabian Nights" stories. The first translations into English, notably that by Edward Lane (1840, 1859), were highly abridged. In translating the Nights, Burton "attempted to invent an English equivalent of medieval Arabic. In doing so, he drew upon Chaucerian English, Elizabethan English, and the 1653 English translation by Sir Thomas Urquhart of the first three books of Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel" (Byatt).

Map G Hampstead and St John's Wood (1900).

1900 - London, 1900. Lithographic map with original hand colour. Sheet 450 x 280mm. Binding folds flattened, key placed at top margin. A map of Hampstead and St John's Wood, one section (of twenty) of an extended version of the incredibly influential Poverty Map, originally published in Charles Booth's 'Life and Labour of the People in London', a founding text of British sociology. Showing Hampstead, St John's Wood, Primrose Hill and Kilburn. The key gives seven colour codes for the degree of wealth of the inhabitants (ranging from black - 'Lowest class', through shades of blue and purple - 'Poor', 'Mixed', 'Fairly Comfortable', to red - 'Well to do' and yellow - 'Wealthy'). Booth (1840-1916), owner of the Booth Shipping Line, acted in response to an 1886 Pall Mall Gazette article that claimed that 25% of Londoners lived in poverty. Booth regarded this figure as wildly exaggerated, so recruited a team of volunteer researchers to compile an analysis of social conditions based on field visits and interviews with local police, clergy and employers. The first volume of 'Life and Labour' (1889), covering the East End, showed that 35% lived in poverty. The second series, covering the rest of the city (1891) showed that no less than 30 per cent of the city's total population could be classed as poor. See HYDE: Victorian Maps of London, 252.

[Paper Toys] Chocolat Lombart Souvenir de la Fête Four toys: policeman, private or scout, jockey, clown

Fine. N.d., circa 1900. The toy figures were meant to bring amusement by twirling them around on a toothpick. WIth their limbs attached but movable, the figures would then somersault and engage in spastic acrobatics. The figures came in an envelope along with an instruction sheet and toothpick or axle. We have all these pieces for all the figures we have. We do not know whether the company made other such figures, but we would guess that it did. The company goes back to 1760 and continued in business until 1957 when it was absorbed by another chocolatier, Menier. In the early 20th century it claimed to have the largest factory within Paris.

"Alongside;" being notes suggested by "A New England Boyhood" of Doctor Edward Everett Hale

Boston: Privately Printed Thomas Todd, 1900. First Edition, inscribed on ffe by the author to Samuel Bowles and dated May 1, 1900, one of 50 (or 57) copies (notation on AAS copy cites 57 copies printed but colophon states 50), of this privately limited edition, a memoir of the author's early childhood as daughter of Mark Healey, a Boston banker (President of The Merchant's Bank). Page size: 9-1/4 x 7 inches; [i-iiil] 100pp. + frontis half-tone engraving of medallion portrait of Mark Healey at age 84 by Edward Spring. Bound: grey cloth over boards with title stamped in gold gilt on front panel, 3 parallel vertical rules on either side of front panel, spine a bit sunned, else near fine. The memoir cites reformers such a Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and Maria Weston Chapman, amid the names of many Boston Brahmins. An attendee of Margaret Fuller's "Conversations" her publication on the subject provides the only first-hand account of this important feminist event. Dall became an important figure in the organization of the woman's rights movement in Massachusetts. A devoted feminist (long before common use of the term) prompted her book, THE COLLEGE, THE MARKET, AND THE COURT; OR WOMAN'S RELATION TO EDUCATION, LABOR, AND LAW (1867) which went beyond the suffrage movement, calling for removal of educational and legal disabilities based on sex and anticipated Charlotte Perkins Gilman's WOMEN AND ECONOMICS (1898) by 31 years. This charming memoir is a rare look into the privileged youth of one of one of the major women reformers of the 19th century, who helped shape today's world. First editions of Dall's works are quite scarce with none located online at this time - although reprints abound. NAW I, pp. 428-9.

        St. Augustine (Turn-of-the-Century Photo Album)

      - Uncommon photo album of St. Augustine, Florida, c. 1900. Billed as the oldest city in the United States (or, more accurately, "the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the U.S."), St. Augustine is obviously rich in history and this album includes a number of its most historic spots, such as: "Old City Gate", "The Sea Wall", "Fort Marion". "Hotel Ponce de Leon", "Hotel Alcazar", "St. George Street and Old House" and "Old Slave Market", etc. The printed photos are all crisp and bright and have white-lettered captions. And the ribbon-tied, olive-green covers (with their decorative flourishes) have held up nicely but show light offsetting along the edges. Oblong quarto, a wonderful celebration of "old" St. Augustine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Spine gently rolled and darkened, very minor wear to tips, a little faint soiling to covers, occasional spot of foxing to contents. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. When Wells became ill on a cycling holiday in 1898, he recuperated at Hicks's house in New Romney, where he was visited by Edmund Gosse and Henry James. The following year, when Henry James received a copy of Tales of Space and Time he wrote to Wells "you fill me with wonder and admiration... your spirit is huge, your fascination irresistible, your resources infinite". Though dated 1900, the book was actually published in November 1899.

Three complete of sets of illustrated printed betting tickets, 100, 200, and 500 numbered series, respectively, each measuring 95 x 50 mm. Featuring an engraved illustration of English jockey Frederick Archer, a famously daring and successful Victorian rider who won most or possibly all of the great English turf prizes and accumulated a large fortune. Tickets are printed in Leeds, with stamp in bottom margin reading J. Richardson, "Bookmaker's Outfitter," Sporteries Leeds. Leather shoulder bag measuring 340 x 240 mm, with original strap, working clasps, inner pockets, his name in gilt to one side. Very good condition. Little is known of gambling bookie Charles Drew, but that his residence and business were based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, in Northeast England, he married Ann Brown on 19 Jul 1852 at the South Shields St. Hilda parish church, and that he actively, illegally solicited gambling on streets by circulating betting cards for horse races. On 15 March 1901, the South Shields Daily Gazette reported on Drew's illegal activities: "At South Shields to-day, Charles Drew, bookmaker, was charged with betting East Street on Thursday last." Detective Sanderson and other officers deposed to the defendant being in the street taking bets in the usual way from 12 p.m. till 3 p.m. on the day named..." Several decades later, the gambling pastime which was already firmly entrenched in British culture would finally become a legal pastime. 1 September 1960, BBC: "... 1 January 1961 gambling for small sums will be legal for games of skill... betting shops will take gambling off the streets... At the moment, anyone who wants to place a bet on the horses has to demonstrate they have enough credit to set up an account with a bookmaker and do their dealings by telephone...."

Vorbilder für Kunstverglasungen im stile der Neuzeit. Entwuerfe für Treppen- und Salonfenster, Vorsetzer, Lünetten, Rosetten, Oberlichte zur Ausführung in Kathedral-, Opalescent- und anderen Glassorten von Arnold Longrün. Erste Serie 16 Farbentafeln.

Berlin, Bruno Hessling, 1900. Folio (48.0 x 33.9 cm). Title page, [iv] pp., 16 large chromolithographed plates in original pictorial portfolio with Jugendstil ornaments and lettering on the front board, and cloth spine.l An influentual and beautifully illustrated work on stained glass (leaded glass). The rear board contains a list of publications of "Bruno Hessling Buchhandlung für Architektur und Kunstgewerbe". The firm had two addresses, one in Berlin, and one on East 12th St., Manhattan, and must have been a bridgehead in America for influential European art movements. For instance, the influence on the design of Tiffany lamps seems evident. Lyongrün's designs seems to be derived, in part, from the works of the influential Jugendstil artist Anton Seder. Some very light soiling and discolouring to the plate edges, otherwise a fine, brightly coloured set. Rare. Schneider-Henn, 206.
