        The Importance of Being Earnest.

London: Leonard Smithers and Co,, 1899. A Trivial Comedy for Serious People by the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan. Square octavo. Original pale purple cloth, gilt lettered spine, gilt floral motifs from designs by Charles Shannon on spine and covers, untrimmed. Bookplate to front pastedown. Spine and top of boards slightly sunned, spine ends a touch bumped, light offsetting from bookplate, occasional minor spotting to text block. A very good copy. First and limited edition, out-of-series copy out of an edition of 1,000 copies. The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde's last play, opened to great acclaim on Valentine's Day 1895 but was withdrawn after Wilde's failed libel suit against Lord Queensbury led to his arrest. The subsequent "utter social destruction of Wilde" (ODNB) meant that the play was not published in book form until February 1899, after Wilde's release from prison. Richard Ellmann comments that Smithers's handsome editions of Earnest and An Ideal Husband "brought Wilde a little money".

        Origines de la France Contemporaine

1899 - TAINE, Hippolyte Adolphe. Les Origines de la France Contemporaine. Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1899-1900. Eleven volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter red close-grain morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $1500.Mixed editions of the noted philosopher's innovative analysis of French history, handsomely bound by Blackwell's.Taine's influence on French intellectual culture and literature was enormous. His Origines de la France Contemporaine is a monumental analysis of French history, claiming scientific objectivity. His attempt to understand the contemporary political and social reality of France through its origins in the ancien régime and the Revolution is simply grandiose. In conducting his research, Taine invented a unique form of inquiry, combining history (social, constitutional, and ideological) with sociology and psychology, supported by substantial references to archive material. Yet his innovative working methods have always aroused skepticism from all sides. "Several critics have done me the honor of fighting," he declared, "or sometimes approving, what they call "˜my system.' I have no such claim to a "˜system': I try at best to have a method. A system is an explanation of a work in its entirety; a method is a way to work. I want to work in a certain way, nothing more. Instead of refuting rebuttal, I outline the process that is involved, and hope that it leads to truth. My method requires practice"" if the scholar wants to try it out, he may decide on its effectiveness one way or the other." Taine had a special relationship with the authors of his time, especially Émile Zola. "In page after page, including many of [Zola's] most memorable writings, we are presented with what amounts to a mimesis of the interplay between sensation and imagination which Taine studied at great length and out of which, he believed, emerges the world of the mind" (Philip Walker). Signature of notable collector of English decorative arts Irwin Untermeyer, whose collection for the most part is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Light patches of foxing to first few leaves.         Tokyo Fuzoku Shi (Fuzokushi). [ ]. ["Chronicles of Tokyo Manners and Customs"].

Fuzanbou (Fuzanbo) 1899-1902 (Meiji 35), Tokyo - 3 vols., 8vo. COMPLETE SET. [1. Jokan, 1899: ] + [2. Chukan, 1900: ] + [3. Gekan, 1902: ]. 178 +168 + 204, 45 pp. Illustrated throughout with high-quality woodblocks, and also containing two KUCHIE woodblock prints (see below). Original Fukuro toji binding: color printed wrappers as issued, paper labels. Some wear and soiling (covers of Vol. 2 are quite soiled). Preserved in a fine protective case. Hirade's work on Tokyo customs, manners, and everyday life, is of the greatest importance to sociologists and urban historians of the Meiji era, still unsurpassed. The "Tokyo Fuzokushi" offers painstaking research and first-hand observations of Japan's greatest city at the dawn of the Industrial Age. Here the Tokyo experience is well illustrated and described topographically. In his erudite narrative, Hirade shares his wonder of the changes of Tokyo's physical and human landscape. These three volumes are tantamount to an ethnographic encyclopedia of Tokyo, describing the customs of Tokyo society, ranging from the poor and pitiful to the wealthy and powerful. It is a remarkable fact that even the most "unremarkable" details of life in Tokyo were not excluded. To take just one example: Hirade informs us that all aspects of funeral pageantry, from mourning clothes to artificial flowers and cages of birds for release, were available for hire. Naturally, the funeral arrangements were customized according to the social class of the decedent and survivor(s). For instance, a large and expensive bier (koshi) could be rented by upper-class mourners; it featured a miniature shrine carried on top of two parallel poles, and necessitated the employment of several footman. These koshi were used to carry high-quality horizontal coffins. By contrast, a kago bier (rented by middle-class mourners) required only two men to carry it, and were utilized to carry less expensive upright coffins. Hirade does not fail to add that the very poor squeezed the dead into what amounted to crude barrels (hayaoke), merely lashing the barrels to poles for transport on the shoulders of relatives or friends. Finally, Hirade goes on to describe a general shift in Tokyo from upright coffins to horizontal ones. Hirade observes changes in the traditions of escaping the summer heat: we learn that the hiring of boats on the Sumida River was on the wane; members of the leisure class were now boarding trains for leaure places elsewhere, even as far away as the mountains of Nikko and Chuzenjii. Hirade adds that, as a result, the restaurants along the Sumida riverbanks were experiencing a significant decrease in the summer trade of former days. It is not lost on Hirade that this account exemplifies economic and cultural tension in the transition between pastoral and industrial Tokyo. Other topics include (but are by no means limited to) descriptions of neighborhood youth activities in Tokyo; problems of juvenile delinquency, "modern" Tokyo cuisine and fine dining; theater and public ceremonies; Tokyo's neighborhood landlords; their responsibilities for the physical upkeep of neighborhood watch stations, and for the collection of funds used for festivals and other local activities; folklore of Tokyo residents; the notorious conditions of neighborhood streets (described locally as "mud soil"); and much more. The depth and richness in Hirade Kojiro's gazetteer is considerable. For instance, the chronicler provides graphic details of the lively Asakusa neighborhood before it was obliterated by the catastrophic 1923 Kanto Earthquake (the loss of life has been estimated in the six figures). But for the present Chronicle we would have little way of knowing that in 1902 Asakusa Park was elbow to chin with freak shows, clockwork automata, hydraulic automata, bawdy renditions of classics in loyalty and filial piety, figurative tableaux in bamboo basketry and dried kelp, raconteurs, thugs, and whores. In Vol. III, Hirade Kojiro reports the following in the area: "ball riders, acrobats and c [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Arabic Press of Egypt. London, Luzac & Co. (by E. J. Brill at Leyden), 1899.

1899. (4), 94 pp. 1 bl. f., 29, (1) pp. of adverts. Original red cloth with giltstamped title to spine. First and only edition of this indispensable, oft-quoted study of early Egyptian journalism and book-publication. When published, the book was hailed by the conservatively British Oriental Institute as "valuable as work of reference, and as showing the intellectual actvity of all those people who fall under British influence" (Asiatic Quarterly Review). The Silesian-born Arabist and Islamic scholar Martin Hartmann (1851-1918) pioneered Islamic studies as an independent discipline. While his scholarly work spans Islam from its beginnings to the present and from China to West Africa, it was contemporary Islam, widely neglected by the German universities, that was his main focus of interest. "Hartmann was one of the first to collect Arabic folk songs, published on the Arabic press, pointed out the role of Islam in China and provided extensive reports on the happenings within the Ottoman Empire. Crucially, he introduced the sociological method to German Islamic scholarship" (cf. NDB VII, 745f.). "A learned critical list of Arabic publication" (Athenaeum). - Original untrimmed top edge; very slight bumping to extremeties. A contemporary scholar's handwritten underlinings and notes (some in shorthand) throughout. OCLC 19530169.

General Instructions and Local Regulations for the Squadron and Naval Establishments on the China Station, 1899.

[Hong Kong:] Noronha & Co.,, 1899. Large octavo (241 x 161 mm). Original blue-green cloth, rebacked and recornered in black leatherette, retaining the original skiver corners on the rear board, spine and front board lettered in gilt. Annotations throughout in black (very occasionally red) ink; profuse printed slips with revised regulations tipped in or pasted over existing text; and laid-in foolscap typescript of orders relating to use of the Picket Room with reference to the commander of Tamar and dated 25 October 1900. Sides rubbed and marked, corners of rear board worn, inner hinges reinforced with linen, pale foxing to endpapers, light toning, occasional staining and cockling from adhesive, short closed tear to top edge of pp. 19-20 not affecting text, still very good. An extremely rare station order book printed a few months before the onset of the Boxer Rebellion, untraced in libraries and secondary literature. From the library of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, not marked as such, though copiously revised by annotation or by the insertion of printed slips, fastidiously enumerated in the "Corrections to Station Order Book" on the front pastedown and free endpaper, the first tranche dated 6 June (1899, two months before the beginning of the uprising) and initialled "D.G.S." under "Officer making corrections", the remaining interpolations dated from 19 August 1899 to 21 June 1901 (three months before the Boxer Protocol) and initialled "A.E.P". As the initials evade ascription to any Royal Navy commanders then in China, they appear to belong to junior officers possibly writing on a captain's behalf; on the title-page this copy is hand-numbered 12 of what appears to have been a highly restricted print-run; there is additionally the pencilled inscription "Captain" to the front pastedown, and a foolscap sheet giving notice of the Diseases of Animals Act with regard to the import of dogs, pasted in to page 272, is headed "To be inserted at page 273 of Captain's Copy of Station Order Book". The Chinese defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-5) encouraged a scramble for concessions among the major European powers, especially with regard to trade agreements and missionary privileges. There was soon a violent reaction among the Chinese, culminating in a series of systematic attacks on Europeans, their embassies, and Christian converts in May 1900. On the 28th the British ambassador at Peking telegraphed for assistance, and Admiral Seymour, commander-in-chief of the China station, with HMS Centurion as his flagship and Jellicoe as his flag captain, "assembled a force from the various national squadrons then lying off the mouth of the Peiho (Beihe) River. On 5 June Jellicoe went ahead to assess the most effective method of advance ? after passing Tientsin (Tianjin) the expedition was unable to advance or retreat; the Chinese army, now openly hostile, had destroyed the railway. On 19 June Seymour abandoned the railway, loaded the wounded onto sampans and retreated. The allies had to clear every village on their route, and on 21 June Jellicoe was hit in the chest while leading such an attack. Although the wound was initially considered fatal ? he was evacuated with the rest of the force and made a full recovery ? Returning to his post afloat Jellicoe accumulated considerable experience of foreign armed forces, and was particularly impressed by the professionalism of the German navy. Created CB in 1900, he had demonstrated leadership, courage, and administrative talent. There could be no doubt that he would reach the top of his profession. The Centurion paid off in August 1901" (ODNB). The profuse interpolations, alterations and deletions form a picture of extensive and precipitate revisions of protocol in the lead-up to and during the conflict. Several speak to ongoing struggles and negotiations between the European powers. A notable addition to the section on use of Russian ports in the chapter "Dealings with Foreign Powers" indicates that Russian Empire secured a major concession in preventing British (and perhaps other) ships from entering the Amur River or visiting Nicolaievsk, the Russian trading port established there in 1851; a pasted slip on page 146 incorporates an entirely new article stressing that "Foreign Port Regulations are to be strictly adhered to and are not to be infringed without leave being asked and granted". Other changes might be taken to reflect increasing co-operation, including a pasted slip allowing Japanese authorities to be rewarded for the apprehension of absentee British seamen (p. 163), and a tipped-in slip adding the Italian National Fête Day to Washington's Birthday, the Fourth of July and Bastille Day as occasions on which a British ship may mark at the request of a foreign officer (p. 25). Other emendations range across the entire corpus of naval protocol, including minor changes to dress regulations ("sashes are not to be worn by officers nor N.C.O's over white tunics", p. 41), various administrative and financial practices (the annotated slip to p. 59 ordering that oil for torpedo nets be charged against the ship), signals, drills and exercises, gunnery, equipment, and even the chain of command (an interpolation at p. 173 for instance transferring the charge of the rifle range to the commander over the warrant office "for ease and maintenance"). All the updated regulations are recapitulated in the index for reference, as well as being listed by date at the front of the volume, the whole a superb demonstration of the administrative discipline which undergirded British sea power. Shortly after his return to England in 1901 Jellicoe was promoted steadily up the naval hierarchy, culminating in his appointment at commander of the Grand Fleet in 1914. Despite the initial failure of the Seymour Expedition, the Boxer Rebellion was a considerable success, some years before Jellicoe's much-debated conduct at the Battle of Jutland allowed German propagandists to claim that the spell of Trafalgar had finally been broken.

An exceedingly scarce and beautifully printed salesman sample catalogue for men's suits, overcoats, and Street Railway Motormen & Conductor uniforms issued just after the Spanish-American War. This catalogue offers invaluable illustrated historical reference for the colours, styles, and fabrics during the Victorian era for professionals, the well-dressed business man, and Railroad uniforms. Of particular interest is the sales advice and advertising recommendations they have included for the retailers of their suits and clothing, interspersed with the plates and fabric samples. The firm was founded by Henry Michaels (1822-1894), one of Rochester's earliest manufacturers of ready-made men's clothing, and would become the longest-lived and largest independent clothing company in Rochester, New York lasting 128 years. From the onset, the company salesmen were so successful they often oversold their stock, and had to often increase output to meet the demand. In 1877, Michaels reorganised the company with his son-in-law Morley Stern, and by 1885 adopted Michaels, Stern & Co. as the company name. Their seven-story building at Clinton Ave & Pleasant remained the company headquarters until 1977 when the firm was dissolved.
