The Ballad of Reading Gaol. By C. 3.3. [Oscar Wilde].

Leonard Smithers,, 1899. Later Edition of the First Edition [7th printing of June 1899]. London, Leonard Smithers, 1899. 8°. 31 pages. Original Hardcover (Quarter vellum with mustard boards). Unusually excellent condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Interior also in marvellous condition. Exlbiris / Bookplate of film critic Leonie Graetz (Exlibris was made by the artist Hermann Westphal) to the front pastedown. Very Rare in this condition ! The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a poem by Oscar Wilde, written in exile either in Berneval-le-Grand or in Dieppe, France, after his release from Reading Gaol (pronounced "redding jail") on 19 May 1897. Wilde had been incarcerated in Reading, after being convicted of homosexual offences in 1895 and sentenced to two years' hard labour in prison.nnDuring his imprisonment, on Tuesday, 7 July 1896, a hanging took place. Charles Thomas Wooldridge had been a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards. He was convicted of cutting the throat of his wife, Laura Ellen, earlier that year at Clewer, near Windsor. He was aged only 30 when executed.nnWilde spent mid-1897 with Robert Ross in Berneval-le-Grand, where he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol. The poem narrates the execution of Wooldridge; it moves from an objective story-telling to symbolic identification with the prisoners as a whole. No attempt is made to assess the justice of the laws which convicted them, but rather the poem highlights the brutalisation of the punishment that all convicts share. Wilde juxtaposes the executed man and himself with the line "Yet each man kills the thing he loves". Wilde too was separated from his wife and sons. He adopted the proletarian ballad form, and suggested it be published in Reynold's Magazine, "because it circulates widely among the criminal classes ? to which I now belong ? for once I will be read by my peers ? a new experience for me".nnThe finished poem was published by Leonard Smithers on February 13, 1898 under the name C.3.3., which stood for cell block C, landing 3, cell 3. This ensured that Wilde's name ? by then notorious ? did not appear on the poem's front cover. It was not commonly known, until the 7th printing in June 1899, that C.3.3. was actually Wilde. The first edition, of 800 copies, sold out within a week, and Smithers announced that a second edition would be ready within another week; that was printed on February 24th, in 1000 copies, which also sold well. A third edition, of 99 numbered copies "signed by the author" was printed on March 4th, on the same day a fourth edition of 1200 ordinary copies was printed. A fifth edition of a 1000 copies was printed on March 17th, and a sixth edition was printed in 1000 copies on May 21st, 1898. So far the book's title page had identified the author only as C.3.3., although many reviewers, and of course those who bought the numbered and autographed third edition copies, knew that Wilde was the author, but the seventh edition, printed on June 23, 1899 actually revealed the author's identity, putting the name Oscar Wilde, in square brackets, below the C.3.3.. It brought him a small income in his remaining lifetime.nnThe poem consists of 109 stanzas of 6 lines, of 8-6-8-6-8-6 syllables, and rhyming a-b-c-b-d-b. Some stanzas incorporate rhymes within some of all of the 8-syllable lines. The whole poem is grouped into 6 untitled sections of 16, 13, 37, 23, 17 & 3 stanzas. A version with only 63 of the stanzas, divided into 4 sections of 15, 7, 22 & 19 stanzas, and allegedly based on the original draft, was included in the posthumous editions of Wilde's poetry edited by Robert Ross, "for the benefit of reciters and their audiences who have found the entire poem too long for declamation".         The Theory of the Leisure Class. An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1899 - Octavo. Original dark-green vertical grain cloth, spine lettered gilt and gilt bands at head and foot, covers with four blind rules at head and three blind rules at foot, top edge gilt, others uncut. Housed in a grey cloth solander box. Spine slightly darkened, minor wear to spine ends, a couple of small stains to cloth. An excellent copy. First edition, review copy sent to the American journalist and suffragist Florence Finch Kelly (1858–1939), with her ownership signature to the front free endpaper and her pencil marginalia throughout, particularly extensive to the final few leaves. Kelly was on the staff of various American newspapers, including the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. At the time of the publication of the present work, Kelly wrote articles, columns, and book reviews for the Los Angeles Times. Norwegian-American professor Thorstein Veblen's first and most successful work was written as a serious economic analysis of contemporary America, but after William Dean Howells gave the book a rave review as a social satire, it became a best-seller. "Into it he poured all the acidulous ideas and fantastic terminology that had been simmering in his mind for years. It was a savage attack upon the business class and their pecuniary values, half concealed behind an elaborate screenwork of irony, mystification and polysyllabic learning" (DAB). "The treatise is essentially an analysis of the latent functions of 'conspicuous consumption' and 'conspicuous waste' as symbols of upper-class status and as competitive methods of enhancing individual prestige. Veblen's term 'conspicuous consumption' has become part of everyday language" (IESS) and in modern economy Veblen goods are those whose demand increases in proportion to their price, in contradiction with the law of demand.

The Earliest Known Signed Photograph of a President & his Vice President! Rare Signed Photograph of President McKinley and Vice President Hobart riding in a horse-drawn carriage at Lake Champlain just three months before Hobart's death

[Lake Champlain, New York], [August1899]. 8.5" x 6.5". "Photograph Signed ""With much regard / Your friends / William McKinley"" as President and ""Garret A. Hobart"" as Vice President. Sepia, 8.5"" x 6.5"" photo board. Light brown 6"" by 1/8 inch stain across center of photograph and minor surface and photographic flaws not touching images of people. Signed in dark ink with excellent contrast. Signed in lower left by the photographer, ""Katherine E. McClellan.""Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed ""Geo. B. Cortelyou"" as Acting Secretary to the President, 1 page, 4.5' x 7"". Soiled. Executive Mansion, Washington, stationery but written from Hotel Champlain, Clinton County, N.Y., August 23, 1899. To Col. LeGrand B. Cannon, Overlake, Near Burlington, Vt. In full, ""At the request of the President and Vice-President I have much pleasure in sending you the enclosed photograph with a personal inscription. Hoping that you are rapidly recovering and assuring you of the pleasant memories entertained by the President, Mrs. McKinley. Vice-President and Mrs. Hobart and others of our party, of your courtesy and thoughtfulness, believe me…"" George B. Cortelyou (1862-1940) later served as Secretary to the President (1900-1903), the first Secretary of Commerce and Labor (1903-1904), Postmaster General (1905-1907), and Secretary of the Treasury (1907-1909). After he was shot on September 6, 1901, McKinley collapsed but was caught and supported by his aides, among them Cortelyou. As he was held in their arms, he whispered, ""My wife... be careful, Cortelyou, how you tell her. Oh, be careful.""Sworn in as McKinley's Vice President in 1897, Garret A. Hobart had fallen ill with a serious heart ailment by late 1898. By April 1899, Hobart's illness was well known in the press. He rented a cottage in his birthplace of Long Branch, on the Jersey Shore. Doctors prescribed complete rest. He and his wife left Long Branch for Lake Champlain, N.Y., on August 4, 1899 for a vacation with the President and Mrs. McKinley. On the evening of August 24, 1899, the Hobarts and McKinleys left nearby Plattsburg, N.Y., for Long Branch where the President and First Lady spent August 25-26 with the Hobarts at their cottage. The Cortelyou letter was written from Lake Champlain on August 23, 1899; the photograph must have been signed at Lake Champlain, probably at the Hotel Champlain..After a vacation with his wife and the McKinleys on Lake Champlain, Hobart returned to his home in Paterson, New Jersey, in September. After almost two months of battling his illness, on November 21, 1899, at age 55, Vice President Garret A. Hobart died of congestive heart failure. President McKinley told his family, ""No one outside of this home feels this loss more deeply than I do."

Aradia or the Gospel of the Witches.

London: David Nutt, , 1899. Octavo. Original sage green cloth, title gilt to spine and in white to the upper board, top edge gilt, others uncut. Pictorial title page. A little shelf-wear, two bookplates, one superimposed on the other, to the front pastedown, small ink ownership stamp to the front free endpaper and rear pastedown, toning of the text-block shading to light marginal browning, but otherwise very good. First edition. The work of a Philadelphia-born journalist and folklorist, Aradia, a study of the persistence of "la vecchia religione" in Italy, it was claimed by its author to have been based on a manuscript account obtained from "Maddalena", a Florentine fortune-teller and witch. Although the subject of continuing controversy, the text undeniably exercised a persuasive influence over Gerald Gardner in the development of his ideas of witchcraft, and is widely considered to be the foundation text of modern wicca and stregheria. This original edition is extremely uncommon.

The Theory of the Leisure Class.

New York: The Macmillan Company,, 1899. An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions. Octavo. First edition, review copy sent to the American journalist and suffragist Florence Finch Kelly (1858?1939), with her ownership signature to the front free endpaper and her pencil marginalia throughout, particularly extensive to the final few leaves.
