Illustrated throughout the set with engraved titles pages and plates. Some minor spotting to fore-edge, spines uniformly faded to light brown, an excellent set. The Gadshill edition, "printed from the edition that was carefully corrected by the author in 1867 and 1868" and including H. K. Browne and George Cruikshank's beloved illustrations. A handsome set of what is generally considered one of the best editions of the collected works of Charles Dickens.

The exceptionally rare 6 auction catalogues of the 3 year sale of the contents of Chateau Heeswijk held by Frederik Muller in 's-Hertogenbosch. The castle of Heeswijk was built in 1080 as a single tower and would over the centuries be built in to a true fortified castle as it is now known. The castle was an important and historic fortification throughout the centuries where even the French King Louis XIV came to sign a treatise to end a war in 1672. The contents of the castle would eventually be auctioned in 1899. All items sold found their way to new owners around the globe and made the staggering amount of 600.000 Guilders! This set with manuscript pages of The Gilded Age, one each by Twain and by collaborator Charles Dudley Warner, tipped in to Volume X. This set also with a tipped-in double signature on the limitation leaf, “S.L. Clemens (Mark Twain),” and an autograph letter tipped to the blank opposite the limitation page, from Twain to his publisher, “Feb. 16. Friend Bliss: Please mail or send in your own way, a cloth copy of Innocents Abroad to Sidney Moffett, New Market, Shenendoah Co, Va, & charge to my Act. Yours, Mark.” On the reverse is written in a different hand: “Mark Twain Feb. 16, Â’75.” Very handsomely bound.Leaves of the Gilded Age manuscripts of Twain and Warner were sometimes bound into sets of the Edition de Luxe, and especially the 512 sets called the ""Autograph Edition."" Twain's manuscript leaf, from only six pages into the work (appearing on p. 18 here) begins, ""Â… for a coonskin & a cake of beeswax to an old dame in linsey-woolsey, put his letter away, & went into the kitchen. His wife was there, constructing some dried apple pies; a slovenly urchin of ten was dreaming over a rude weather-vane of his own contrivingÂ…"" ""Friend Bliss"" mentioned in the autograph letter is Elisha Bliss (1822-80), manager of the American Publishing Company which published the first five Twain titles between 1869 and 1880. Bliss marketed authors through subscription sales, a technique that fulfilled his goal of making Twain ""the people's author"" (Kaplan, 61). ""His decision to chance a work of humor with his company was a bold one, but his instinct that Mark Twain had a ready-made audienceÂ… proved accurate and enormously profitableÂ…. Bliss can claim the credit for recognizing Mark Twain's proper audience, placing his literature in the hands of that audience, and educating his apprentice author in the mechanics of subscription publication. His influence lurksÂ… behind the humorist's self-definition of his role as the 'People's Author' and the spokesman for the 'mighty mass of the uncultivatedÂ…"" (Wilson, 90-91). At the end of the 19th-century subscription sales began to lose ground to urban bookstores. Frank Bliss, Elisha's heir, shed subscription booklists and began issuing expensive deluxe editions, none more important than this one. ""As if to mark the close of a literary era,"" Frank supervised the production of this limited edition set and, according to Twain, ""appeared to be having an easy time selling it, President McKinley and other big guns have subscribed"" (Kaplan, 355). This superb set contains all of Twain's work, including novels, essays and sketches. Each volume with a tissue-guarded frontispiece and a vignette title page. With over 100 tissue-guarded plates, including etchings by W. H. W. Bicknell and photogravures from photographs and from drawings by Peter Newell, E. W. Kemble, B. West Clinedinst, Dan Beard, W. T. Smedley, F. M. Senior, F. T. Merrill, F. Luis Mora, E. H. Garrett, J. G. Brown, F. V. DuMond, and others. These plates were used for the first time in this set and again in various later editions issued by the American Publishing Company (see BAL 3456). Laid in to the first volume is a typed letter, dated in 1940, to a Mrs. Daniel Jenks from a Walter Norman of Pittsfield, MA. Norman apparently worked with his father at the L. L. Brown Paper Company, a company apparently producing paper for the American Publishing Company. He makes reference in the letter to the paper used in the first 1000 copies of this set, deckle-edged paper with a ""Mark Twain"" watermark. Two volumes with expert repairs to headcaps. An extraordinary set with autograph material in fine condition.

His Origines de la France Contemporaine is a monumental analysis of French history, claiming scientific objectivity. His attempt to understand the contemporary political and social reality of France through its origins in the ancien régime and the Revolution is simply grandiose. In conducting his research, Taine invented a unique form of inquiry, combining history (social, constitutional, and ideological) with sociology and psychology, supported by substantial references to archive material. Yet his innovative working methods have always aroused skepticism from all sides. “Several critics have done me the honor of fighting,” he declared, “or sometimes approving, what they call ‘my system.’ I have no such claim to a ‘system’: I try at best to have a method. A system is an explanation of a work in its entirety; a method is a way to work. I want to work in a certain way, nothing more. Instead of refuting rebuttal, I outline the process that is involved, and hope that it leads to truth. My method requires practice— if the scholar wants to try it out, he may decide on its effectiveness one way or the other.” Taine had a special relationship with the authors of his time, especially Émile Zola. “In page after page, including many of [Zola’s] most memorable writings, we are presented with what amounts to a mimesis of the interplay between sensation and imagination which Taine studied at great length and out of which, he believed, emerges the world of the mind” (Philip Walker).       London: Leonard Smithers and Co. 1899. First edition in English. First edition in English. Publisher’s original grey cloth with black titles and illustration [by W. T. Horton] to the upper board and spine. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with light bumping and minor fraying at the spine tips, the cloth a trifle darkened to the extremities and spine. The contents are entirely complete including the publisher’s 16 page catalogue dated Spring 1899, punctuated by Aubrey Beardsley’s Pegasus device to the final leaf. There is a previous owner’s name on the front endpaper which also has a couple of faint traces of [long removed] tape marks and light spotting to the prelims and margins throughout. With two hand corrections to the text and another to the price of this publication in the publisher’s catalogue. An excellent example, in original condition of the author’s first novel. The provenance evidence retained with this copy is somewhat intriguing and affords pleasant speculation. Laid in is an original trimmed photograph tipped on to card of the translator, “New Woman” writer and one time lover of the author Mary Chavelita Dunne (George Egerton). The card features the contemporary hand-stamp of The Flyfishers’ Club, London to the outer edge of which both her father Captain John J. Dunne and nephew belonged as members. Egerton herself was known to have taken great pleasure in the sport (as evident in her published correspondence from the time of her brief marriage to Egerton Clairmonte). The hand annotations within the book include a correction to the published price of Hunger in the Smithers catalogue along with a few alternate word choices within the text. Also laid in is a clipped newspaper review of the 1921 Duckworth re-issue. Whilst it is unclear how many copies of this first edition were issued, just a few months before the publisher’s bankruptcy, the evidence and institutional holdings would suggest this figure was low. Egerton in her translator’s note to the 1921 Duckworth reprint writes “I can therefore claim to have been somewhat of a seer, when I introduced the author to an English public, which never bought even the limited edition issued”. Further evidence that the original publication sunk without trace can be found in the accompanying newspaper review of the Duckworth edition which states ““Hunger”, his first novel published in the early eighteen-nineties, but only just issued here in translation”.       THE CONVERSION OF PAULA BY ST. JEROME Heliogravure uitgegeven in 1899 door Arthur Tooth & Sons te Londen naar het schilderij (Opus CCCL) van Lourens Alma-Tadema, later met de hand gekleurd. Very rare first edition of Lenin's most important and substantial work, constituting his only genuine contribution to economics. Written while he was in exile in Siberia and published the year after his first publication, the book established Lenin's reputation as a major Marxist theorist. "'The Development of Capitalism in Russia' is an example of Lenin's acute observation of all facets of the Russian economy. Its detailed documentation of the peculiarities of Russian capitalism - peculiarities stemming from the 'simultaneous existence of the most advanced forms of industry and semi-medieval forms of agriculture' - provides a concrete answer to the questions of how it was possible for the October revolution to succeed twenty years later and to what it owed its specific features" (Walicki). "[E]ven to this day the only comprehensive economic history of a country from a Marxist perspective" (The New Palgrave). 'The Development of Capitalism in Russia' was the result of tremendous research lasting more than three years. Lenin began intensive work on his book when in prison, soon after his arrest in connection with the case of the St. Petersburg "League of Struggle for the Emancipation of the Working Class", and finished it in the village of Shushenskoye where he lived in exile. He had, however, been gathering material for his book long before he began writing it. In his first letter from prison, dated January 2, 1896, Lenin wrote: "I have a plan that has occupied my mind considerably ever since I was arrested, increasingly so as time passes. I have long been engaged on an economic problem (that of the marketing of the products of manufacturing industry within the country), have selected some literature, drawn up a plan for its analysis and have even done some writing with a view to having my work published in book form, should its dimensions exceed those of a magazine article. I should be very unwilling to give up on the job, and am now, apparently, faced with the alternative of either writing it here or of abandoning it altogether." The draft of "The Development of Capitalism in Russia" was completed in August 1898. In a letter dated October 11, 1898, Lenin wrote: "I have finished drafting my markets, and I have begun to give them the finishing touches. The making of a fair copy will go on simultaneously, so that I have thought of sending it off in parts and of having it printed as it gets there in order to avoid delay; if they begin printing it in December, it might just be in time for this season." Much time was needed to give the manuscript the finishing touches and the job was completed at the end of January 1899. "The Development of Capitalism in Russia" came off the press at the end of March 1899, under the pseudonym of "Vladimir Ilyin." - Untrimmed and partly uncut in the original printed wrappers. Twain's manuscript leaf, from pages 40-41 of the second volume of The Gilded Age, reads: ""…and likely to be vastly more so in a little while. Consequently, she was much courted and as much envied. Some of the ablest men of the time succumbed to her fascinations. She frowned upon no lover when he made his first advances; but by and by On the contrary she led him and by every means in her power with when was hopelessly enthralled, he learned from her own lips that she had formed"" [a resolution never to marry]. The autograph letter, dated ""Elmira, July 28,"" reads: ""My Dear G—. Mr. Scandlin evidently has a good business, but you are aware that with so enormous an enterprise as General Grant's book on my hands I am not in a shape to go hunting up investments. I don't know where you are, but I'll send this to Mt. Vernon. Truly Yours, S.L. Clemens."" Twain was working on ghostwriting Grant's memoirs in 1885, the same year that Huckleberry Finn was first published in America.This superb set contains all of Twain's work, including novels, essays and sketches.       ( Versailles) 1899. A colorful and detailed  hand drawn plan of Edouard André's  Parc de Palangen (Polangen in German) prepared  by a student at the Ècole Nationale d'Horticulture, Versailles, where André served as the first chair of landscape architecture beginning in 1890. The resort of Palanga, then in Russia, now Lithuania, was developed by the family of the Polish Count Feliks Tyszkiewicz. It was Tyszkiewicz who engaged André in building the park grounds around his chateau between 1897 and 1907. André worked with Alphand and Haussman in the extensive re-planning of Paris and later developed an international reputation for designing gardens in the style paysagère and later in the style mixte, characterised by the combination of classical and landscape elements as demonstrated at Palanga. The accomplished student drawing by Gauberti  follows closely to Andre's own plan (as shown in Racine et al. CREATEURS DE JARDINS...  p.53)  and locates the palace, basins, rosarium and greenhouses in colourful detail, along with suggestions of diverse planting of masses of trees and shrubs. The winding paths in the style paysagère interconnect the more formal elements in a graceful unity.  A few minor additions and modifications suggest that this plan was prepared a few years after the one attributed to André.  Few illustrations of this park at its heyday remain. Palanga exists today as a botanical garden.  45.2 x 60cm.; hand-colored plan on a pencilled grid, with legend and title in black ink.         Splendid collection of 27 Autograph Letters Signed (Mary Henrietta, 1860-1901, Traveller, Ethnologist and Author)

      1899 - (5 of them lacking a side or two at the beginning or end), written on her return from her second West African journey till shortly before she went out as a nurse to South Africa, the greater number to George William NEVILLE in Putney, (d. 1929, formerly with Elder Dempster, and the first Lagos manager of the Bank of British West Africa), and Mrs Neville, those to Mr Neville include an important discussion about 'Nana' (Nanna OLOMU, deposed as 'indirect rule' governor of what is now most of the Delta State of Nigeria), in social and economic terms, suggesting Nanna might be amenable to building a new town for himself and his people and provide labour for Mr Swanzy's mines, she bares her heart over the alcohol question, missionaries, amateur officials, her feelings about native Africans, always with deep knowledge and her unconventional brand of common sense, other letters deal with interviews, lectures and articles, on one of which her uncle William Bailey suggests she "emigrate not later than the 25th", others again with the calls on her energy by relations, all written in Mary's inimitable humorous style even under the most trying conditions, and with her remarkable ability to 'network', with a press cutting of the memorial, 1901, to her at Eversley, and a letter identifying the recipient of two of the letters as Grant Reid, editor of the Aberdeen 'Northern Figaro', Mary's letters 54 sides 8vo., 100 Addison Road and 32 St. Mary Abbots Terrace, Kensington, 11th October 1895 - 20th September We have not come across any mention of the Neville correspondence. Mr Neville had a fine collection of artefacts, which Mary urges him not to lend (e.g. to ethnologist Ling Roth) but to keep intact. Of Neville's account of Nanna Olomu, she writes "it is the most important document that so far has come into my hands, because behind every paragraph of it I see my beloved native law". She takes the new Bishop of Sierra Leone (John Taylor Smith) to see them before he goes out in 1897, and asks if Mr Neville's friend "the black Bishop" (Isaac OLUWOLE, (1852-1932, Assistant Bishop at Lagos, from 1893, previously head of the grammar school there) "is still in London". Mary writes to them in increasingly affectionate terms, and in 1899 is intent on finding a house for them near her address in Kensington. Checklist (all 8vo). From 100 Addison Road: 1. 11th October 1895, 1 side, to 'Dear Madam'. "It is a comfort to get in touch with anyone who is not a mere vulture after copy", and suggesting dates. 2. 23rd December 1895, 2 sides, to 'Dear Madam'. Saying a friend has carried off 'The Queen' but lending some cuttings which are "near the truth", she will be "very glad to see you unprofessionally" any Saturday. 3. n.d. c. 1895, 2 sides, to Mrs Neville. "Thank you for the very pleasant afternoon . I reached home in a succession of omnibi" which she describes with Latin names, "I am talking like this because I have caught it from the Lady learned in butterflies who has been here going on in this awful way . for hours - the coralinne man did not come. The butterfly lady" says he usually gets lost "as soon as he gets out of the museum", enclosing a proof [not present] and asking if she and Mr Neville as "a great favour" will "put a pencil through those parts you disapprove of & add anything you think ought to be said". 4. 21st January 1896, 2 sides, to Mrs Neville. "Tell Mr Neville [he] has not seen half the palaver yet", and enclosing "the article on my letter" [not present], "I shall get into an awful row when the National Review comes out, my uncle [William Bailey] advises my emigrating not later than the 25th". 5. 12th June 1896, last side only, no addressee. "I will be waiting here or come to you whichever suits you best". 6. 16th June 1896, 2 sides, to Mrs Neville.         Dot and the Kangaroo.

      London: Thomas Burleigh, 1899. Quarto, portrait frontispiece and 19 full-page black & white illustrations by Frank Mahony; original red cloth with patterned endpapers. The very rare first edition of this Australian children's classic. The story of Dot, the little girl lost in the Australian bush, who is helped by a kindly grey kangaroo, has become 'a fundamental text of Australian children's literature' (People, Print and Paper). It has rarely been out of print over the past century, appearing in innumerable editions, with illustrations by a variety of artists.The author, Ethel Pedley, was an English-born music teacher, and committed conservationist, who lived in Sydney for many years. She died at the home of her friend Emmeline Woolley in Darlinghurst in 1898, and was buried at Waverley Cemetery. Before she died she had made arrangements for Bulletin artist Frank Mahony to illustrate the book. His depictions of the bush certainly do give an authentically Australian air to the publication, which although published in London was 'entirely produced in Australia'. Front board a little rubbed, yet a very good copy.

Fascicules de la première et de la deuxième édition mélangés, ce qui explique notamment les glissements de pagination qui peuvent exister entre certains des volumes ou des tomes. Cependant tous les fascicules sont bien complets. Ce traité est divisé comme suit : embryologie, ostéologie et arthrologie (t.1); myologie, lymphatiques, angéiologie (t.2); système nerveux (t.3); appareil respiratoire, tube digestif, annexes du tube digestif (t.4); organes génito-urinaires, organes des sens et glandes surrénales (t.5). Printed cloth, floral endpapers, edges dyed red. Penciled ownership inscription of A. J. Baumann, The Printer at 268 Market Street, San Francisco. Label on rear pastedown for The System Press, 25 California Street, San Francisco. Some wear and soil, very good. This rare California specimen emphasizes straight lines, ease of use, and rapid deployment--money makers for "quick printers"--that also show simplicity and good taste. The first 48 pages offer artistic layouts for all kinds of job work. "Straight" does not mean boring or unadorned: there are 26 pages of decorative material. Thirty pages illustrate printing equipment & presses. Nelson Hawks (inventor of the American Point System) and William Shattuck established this foundry in 1888. In 1894 it incorporated as Pacific States Type Foundry, and continued until the earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed the plant. Annenberg writes that the foundry "was always known for its progressiveness and leadership. It produced many original types of its own design...." Copies located at Columbia, RIT, and several California libraries. Rare on the market.

      Moscow: Sinodalnaya Typografija, 1899. Octavo, [iv], 114 (paginated in Old Slavonic); old quarter sheep with marbled boards. Rare: evangelical text translated into the Aleut language (and printed in Cyrillic), prepared by Ivan Veniaminov-Popov (1797-1879), the great Orthodox missionary to the northern Pacific. Veniaminov was educated in Irkutsk and chose a theological vocation. As a young man he was selected for the Orthodox mission to Unalaska and arrived there in 1822 with his wife and children. While some conversion had been previously successful, it was feared by the Church that Christian and indigenous beliefs had become merged. The scope of the missionary project soon expanded to include the entire Alaskan peninsula and surrounding islands, a vast and often inhospitable geographical area. For ten years Veniaminov was an intrepid traveller, often using small craft and kayaks to visit coastal settlements, and travelling on foot through rugged mountainous regions. In 1832 he was appointed to a relatively sedentary position at Sitka as minister to the Tlingit of the Northwest Coast.Veniaminov was a skilled linguist fluent in several dialects, he prepared this evangelical text in the Aleut language which was first published by the Moscow Synod in 1840 and later in 1899 (the present edition). Both editions are rare. As a pioneer apostle to the frozen north, Veniaminov was canonized Saint Innocent and holds a cherished place in the history of the Orthodox Church. Fine.

        [Cendrillon]. Les Mandores. Autograph musical manuscript, being part of a ballet divertissement from act 2 of the composer's opera Cendrillon. Piano reduction. With an autograph note signed in Massenet's hand on a separate leaf: "Quelques mesures manuscriptes du 2e acte de "Cendrillon" (1898) Paris 3 Nov. 1910."

      Folio (350 x 270 mm). Modern maroon morocco with marbled boards. 4 pp., notated in ink on 20-stave music paper with blindstamp of H. Lard-Esnault Ed. Bellamy sr, Paris on one side of the leaf only. A fair copy of a piano reduction of "Les Mandores" in A major, 3/4 time. Tempo: "Assez Modéré (sans lenteur)"; metronome mark: "120 = [quarter note]." Autograph note to upper left corner of p. 1: "3ème entrée." Several erasures. Cautionary key and time signature for continuation after final double bar (D minor, 12/8 time). System breaks and pagination marked up in pencil in an unknown hand, both matching pp. 172-75 of the first edition of the piano-vocal score published in Paris by Heugel in 1899. The markup, as well as the cautionary key and time signatures at the end, allow for the conclusion that the present copy is part of the engraver's copy of the opera. All leaves guarded and with early horizontal crease; slightly browned; small stain to final blank page. In very good condition overall. "Les Mandores" is part of an extended ballet divertissement in the second act of Massenet's opera Cendrillon. It is not included in Massenet's original manuscript piano-vocal score, dated 1895 (Bibliothèque nationale de France, département Bibliothèque-musée de l'opéra, RES-563); there, the "2ème entrée" of the divertissement ("Le Fiancés") is immediately followed by "Le Rigodon du Roy," counted as "3ème entrée." In the first edition "Les Mandores" appears as the "3ème entrée" (pp. 172-75) and another new movement, "La Florentine," as the "4-ème entrée" (pp. 176-79); the "Rigodon du Roy" is renumbered as the "5-ème entrée" (starting at p. 180 ). The autograph manuscript at the Bibliothèque nationale is also notated on one side of the leaf only, is on the same paper as the present manuscript, and carries engraver's marks in the same hand. System breaks and page breaks match those of the first edition; pagination, however, does not. It appears that Heugel prepared, or at least planned, an earlier edition based solely on the manuscript in the Bibliothèque nationale, but as the premiere was delayed by several years, the publisher apparently put the project on hold. In the interim, Massenet added the new entrée (and made other changes as well), necessitating changes to the pagination of the printed score.
