        CRISANTEMES

The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1899. London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1899. Hardcover. Very good. This is the first printing of the Silver Library edition of Churchill's first book. The Story of the Malakand Field Force was based on Churchill's exploits with Sir Bindon Blood's expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. While Churchill had previously applied his pen as a published correspondent, this was his first book-length work and he clearly labored over it: "I have discovered a great power of application which I did not think I possessed. For two months I have worked not less than five hours a day." Publication of the first edition of 1898 was arranged by Churchill's uncle while the author was still in India, resulting in numerous spelling and detail errors. Churchill was incensed by the errors and acted with haste to address them. Hence later states of the first edition bear errata slips. In part because of the errors in the first edition which so vexed Churchill, the publisher also issued a second edition less than a year after the first in January 1899. This Silver Library edition was the first to incorporate the author's corrections in the text, making this an important and highly collectable edition. Unfortunately, the maroon boards proved highly susceptible to fading and wear, the paper easily browned and became brittle, and the binding often cracked. Here is the first Silver Library edition, first printing - one of just 1,440 copies. This is a very good copy, suitable for collectors. The maroon binding is square, clean, and tight, retaining sharp corners and bright gilt. Spine presentation is quite good, with only mild color shift. The covers retain deep color, with some modest discoloration at points along the fore and bottom edge of the front cover. The contents remain bright with moderate spotting mostly confined to the title page, page edges, and blank inner margins. All maps are intact, as are the frontispiece and original tissue guard and the original, distinctive swan and ship endpapers. The folding map at page 232 shows minor wear to the edge, where it protrudes slightly from the text block. The sole previous ownership mark is a beautiful school prize bookplate (Bellahouston Academy of Glasgow, Scotland) affixed to the first free endpaper, which is filled out by hand and dated "June 1901". The previous owner informs us "I inherited the book from my father who lived in an old cottage in Wiltshire." Bibliographic reference: Cohen A1.3.a, Woods/ICS A1(ba.1), Langworth p.20.

The Big Game of Baltistan and Ladakh. A Summer in High Asia: Being a record of sport and travel in Baltistan and Ladakh

W Thacker & Co, 1899. W Thacker & Co. Hardcover. Original pictorial cloth binding for this First Edition. There is some soiling from age and there is rubbing to the points with small areas of card visible, hinges and heads of the spine. Inside, the hinges are solid as is the binding although there is a slight lean to the spine. The uneven page edges are fairly toned and with some spotting inside. The endpapers are evenly foxed and there are some tide marks to the edges of the first few pages. The frontispiece and its tissue guard are both spotted and foxed consistent with the early pages. Delightfully, the fold out map at the back is immaculate. Page 15 has had the top corner folded to mark the page and this has caused a crease and some light toning around the area as it must have been there for some time, there are also a few occurrences in the margins of some soiling and thumbing. . Good. 1899. First Edition.

        LITTLE BLACK SAMBO

Grant Richards , 1899. Grant Richards , 1899. First edition. 16mo. Dumpy Book no. 4. Green cloth with dark green lines and lettering. A very good copy indeed. The covers are bright and clean, with a little bubbling to the spine. 57 pages of this delightful story of the little black boy named Sambo and his encounters with the tigers in the jungle. Bright, colourful illustrations by the author. This story was written during the author's journey to India. Her intention was to present the tale and its charming pictures to her children, who had remained at home in Scotland. Like so many of these classic children's tales an enthusiastic reception to the story led to its being published by Grant Richards as the fourth in their series of "Dumpy Books". Over the years the story has been at the centre of much controversy, criticised for promoting racist views. The author's intentions, however, were simply to create an amusing children's tale and as the story is still popular with children over a century later she has certainly achieved this. This book has earned its place on the list of the most important and influential pieces of children's literature and is now a greatly sought after and rare item.
