The Story of the Malakand Field Force

London, New York and Bombay, Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899 . London, New York and Bombay, Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1899 . An Episode of Frontier War. New Edition. Small octavo. Original plum buckram, title gilt to the spine, broad single fillet panel to the upper board, decorated endpapers. Portrait frontispiece of Sir Bindon Blood and 2 folding coloured maps, and 4 full-page. A little rubbed, spine sunned, free endpapers browned, lengthy inked contemporary gift inscription to the first blank, text block lightly toned as usual, a very good copy. First printing of the Silver Library Edition of Churchill's first book - a run of 1,440 copies - which first had been published the previous year. Based on his exploits with the Malakand Field Force led by Sir Bindon Blood on the north-west frontier of India in 1897, which Churchill accompanied as a war correspondent for the Daily Telegraph. As he was still in India, the checking of the proofs was undertaken "by an uncle of mine [Moreton Frewin], a very brilliant man and himself a ready writer. For some reason or other he missed many scores of misprints and made no attempt to organise the punctuation." This led to a some fairly severe comments, these however mixed with compliments: "The Athenæum said 'Pages of Napier punctuated by a mad printer's reader'" (My Early Life). One reader unstinting in his praise was the prime minister, Lord Salisbury, who called Churchill for a personal interview and expressed his "admiration not only for its matter but for its style" and thought it a "truer picture" of events than any other documents he had read. The reception of Malakand was key in convincing Churchill that he could live by the pen, as well as by the sword.

Le Rime Di Francesco Petrarca di su gli originali. Commentare by Giosue Carducci and Severino Ferrari [Signed/ Firmato]

Firenze (Florence): G.C. Sansoni, 1899. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of this translation by Geosue Carducci of Di Francesco Petrarca's Poetry from the original text, with commentary by Geosue Carducci and noted scholar Severino Ferrari, bound in three-quarters vellum and marbled boards (wear to the paper at the board edges, apparent scratching out of some writing to the closed page block's leading edge, pages 19 and 133 each show neat notations to the text), SIGNED BY GEOSUE CARDUCCI on the title page. A gifted translator of ancient Italian, Geosue Carducci here presents his translation of Poetry by Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374), the noted Italian Scholar and Poet of Renaissance Italy on whose works (along with those of those of Giovanni Boccaccio and Dante Alighieri) the model for modern Italian was based. Petrarca was a major force in the development of the Renaissance whose sonnets were read and imitated throughout Europe and were considered a model for lyrical poetry. One of the earliest Humanists and regarded as the greatest scholar of his age, Petrarca combined an interest in classical culture and Christianity and left a deep influence on literature throughout Western Europe. An influential Poet and considered to be the national Poet of then modern-day Italy, Geosue Carducci won the 1906 Noble Prize in Literature "not only in consideration of his deep learning and critical research, but above all as a tribute to the creative energy, freshness of style, and lyrical force which characterize his poetic masterpieces". In presenting the Prize to Carducci, C.D. af Wirsén, then the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy noted that Carducci had been nurtured by ancient literature and by Dante and Petrarch (Petrarca), and described Carducci (a forceful anti-Christian) as devoted to the classical ideal and to Petrarchan humanism. Signed copies of Carcucci's works are difficult to find. A Very Good copy of a notable book showing Carducci's scholarly abilities and combining two of Italy's most important Poets, SIGNED BY GEOSUE CARDUCCI. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

The Theory of the Leisure Class

New York: The Macmillan Company; London: Macmillan & Co, Ltd, 1899. New York: The Macmillan Company; London: Macmillan & Co, Ltd,, 1899. An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions. Octavo. Original dark-green vertical grain cloth, spine lettered gilt and gilt bands at head and foot, covers with four blind rules at head and three blind rules at foot, top edge gilt, others uncut. Minuscule ownership signature to front pastedown. Spine rolled, extremities a little rubbed, top corners of boards slightly bumped, front and rear inner joints a touch tender. An excellent copy. First edition, with the author's carte de visite pasted onto the title page. Norwegian-American professor Thorstein Veblen's first and most successful work was written as a serious economic analysis of contemporary America, but after William Dean Howells gave the book a rave review as a social satire, it became a best-seller. "Into it he poured all the acidulous ideas and fantastic terminology that had been simmering in his mind for years. It was a savage attack upon the business class and their pecuniary values, half concealed behind an elaborate screenwork of irony, mystification and polysyllabic learning" (DAB). "The treatise is essentially an analysis of the latent functions of 'conspicuous consumption' and 'conspicuous waste' as symbols of upper-class status and as competitive methods of enhancing individual prestige. Veblen's term 'conspicuous consumption' has become part of everyday language" (IESS) and in modern economy Veblen goods are those whose demand increases in proportion to their price, in contradiction with the law of demand.

        The Awkward Age: A Novel

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1899. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1899 First American edition, first printing, second issue measuring 1 3/8" thick and with serif lettering to the spine. One of 1,000 copies. With autograph letter signed adhered to the front pastedown. Publisher's red-brown cloth, lettered in gilt. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor fraying to the spine ends, a hint of rubbing to the hinges, bright gilt, clean interior. A fresh and attractive copy. Edel and Laurence A53b. This copy includes an autograph letter addressed to "Gildea" and signed by the author "H. James". In the letter, James accepts the addressee's invitation and promises to pass it along to Edwin Lawrence Godkin, founder of The Nation and editor of The New York Evening Post. Godkin and James' professional relationship began in 1865 when Godkin published the still burgeoning writer's work in The Nation's earliest issues. A comraderie quickly developed and the two remained lifelong friends until Godkin's death in 1902. Indeed, while the date and recipient of this letter remain unidentified, this letter was written on stationary with the address 115 East 25th Street, which was the location of Godkin's New York City home in the late 19th century (Powers, Henry James and Edith Wharton, Letters: 1900-1915). Originally published serially in Harper's Weekly from October 1, 1898 - January 7, 1899, The Awkward Age is a novel that tells the story of Nanda Brookenham, a young society woman trying to find her place in her parents' pretentious social circle. The Awkward Age is written almost entirely in dialogue, which, while it allows for a fast-paced plot, limits contextual character development. Accordingly, each of the novel's ten chapters focuses on one of the members of the Brookenham's clique. This first American edition was published on May 12, 1899, less than a month after the first British edition, published on April 25th of the same year.. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        The Awakening

Chicago and New York: Herbert S. Stone and Co Chicago and New York: Herbert S. Stone and Co. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. RARE FIRST EDITION of Chopin's groundbreaking novel; a foundational feminist work. "No other American book was so maligned, neglected for so long, and then embraced so quickly and with such enthusiasm as Kate Chopin's 1899 novel The Awakening. And none has been so thoroughly redeemed as The Awakening. Thought vulgar, morbid, and disturbing in Chopin's time, it has for the past quarter of a century been seen as sensitive, passionate, and inspiring. Forgotten for two generations, it is today known by countless people in dozens of countries, and Kate Chopin has become among the most widely read of classic American authors" (Bernard Koloski, Awakenings)."To a degree that was ahead of her time, she rejected both conservative and liberal didacticism and discarded traditional assumptions in an attempt to depict honestly and empathetic ally the inner life of women" (American National Biography Online).Chicago and New York: Herbert S. Stone and Co, 1899. Octavo, original pictorial green cloth stamped in red and green; custom silk box. Early owner signature ("Bob Myers Babcock") on front free endpaper. Toning to spine with some spotting, small bookseller's ticket to pastedown (offsetting to opposite); text generally very clean and fresh. Actually it is a record of an 1899 campaign for a Boulangiste candidate in the Norman village where Gyp summered, told in a childish narrative and 36 full page cartoonish drawings in color and black and white by "Bob". The Countess was a fanatical anti-Semite and anti-Dreyfusard who denounced populist democracry and the parliamentary French Republic in numerous sketches and novels. She identified Boulanger, who vowed to save France in a time of crisis, with Napoleon I whom she idolized. Georges Boulanger was a conservative French general and politician who threatened a coup d'etat and the establishment of a dictatorship advocating revenge on Germany and a return to the monarchy. According to the newspaper Le Temps, Gyp harangued the peasants and fisherman of the peaceful coastal town, bribed the children with candy and distributed posters insulting the government, for which she was fined. Reference: Willa Silverman, The Notorious Life of Gyp. Right-Wing Anarchist in Fin-de-Siecle France." . Color Pictorial Cloth. About Fine. Illus. by "Bob". Oblong Folio.

The Weavers [Die Weber; De Waber]; Together with a Program for the Play [Each Signed / Unterzeichnet] Clare Booth Luce's copy, Signed by her

London: William Heinemann, 1899. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first UK edition, first printing, being the first printing in English (spine ends and board corners very lightly rubbed, leading bottom corners gently bumped, damage to the front pastedown's lower right corner due to removal of something once attached there, some offsetting to the rear pastedown and opposing endpaper face -- lacking the extremely scarce dust jacket), SIGNED BY GERHARD HAUPTMANN on the title page; TOGETHER WITH an ORIGINAL PROGRAM FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF "THE WEAVERS" At NEW YORK CITY'S GARDEN THEATRE for the Play's run there beginning on December 14, 1915 and continuing for 87 performances -- ending in February 1916, SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN to the front page's bottom margin (being in Very Good condition with some age toning as well as with some splitting at the top and bottom of the spine crease). Emanuel Reicher both directed the Play and took the role of Old Ansorge in it. German dramatist and Novelist Gerhart Hauptmann won the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature "primarily in recognition of his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art". In presenting the Award to Gerhart Hauptmann, Hans Hildebrand, then the Acting Secretary of the Swedish Academy, gave particular praise the "The Weavers", noting it as being the work in which Hauptmann first (at age 30) displayed his mature powers. "The Weavers", first published in Germany (1892), deals with a group of Silesian weavers who, during the 1840s, staged an uprising because of their concerns about the Industrial Revolution. (The Play provided the basis for the 1927 silent film of the same name directed by Frederic Zelnik and starring Paul Wegener.) Of The Weavers, noted Theatre Critic stated that, "as one of Gerhart Hauptmann's experiments in dramatic form, The Weavers is highly significant. Instead of a hero, he has created a mob; this mob is therefore the protagonist—or chief character—and if individuals emerge from the rank and file they are not thrust into the foreground to stay long. It is the weavers as a class that are ever before us, and the unity of the play is in them and in them alone; they are only parts of a larger picture which will take shape as the story advances, and are not intended to be taken as important individuals." Having a notable Provenance, this copy belonged to editor, playwright, journalist, ambassador, socialite, and U.S. Congresswoman (representing Connecticut) Clare Boothe Luce and carries her elegant possession signature to the front free endpaper. Copies of this important Hauptmann work are not at all common, signed copies in any edition or printing are more uncommon still, and copies signed by Gerhart Hauptmann, especially when in English translation, are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy of one of Gerhart Hauptmann's most important works, having an excellent Provenance and having been SIGNED BY THE PRIOR OWNER, CLARE BOOTHE LUCE and, most notably, SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN, TOGETHER WITH AN ORIGINAL PROGRAM FOR FIRST AMERICAN RUN OF THE PLAY, ALSO SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE.

London: Leonard Smithers and Co, 1899. London: Leonard Smithers and Co, 1899. First English language edition. Very Good. Publisher';s original grey cloth, stamped in black. Octavo, collating: x, 312, 15 (ads), [1] (publisher's device), complete. Very Good or a little better with spine toned, corners bumped and cloth a bit spotted/soiled. Oddly, the rear end paper is attached to the rear paste down, but this appears original to the book, so perhaps a publisher's error. First published in 1890 as "Sult" and first translated into English here by Mary Chavelita Dunne under the pseudonym George Edgerton.& & A somewhat autobiographical novel of a destitute writer living in Oslo on a constant search for nourishment; a prototype for later novels of alienation, poverty and loneliness. The book is considered one of the foundations of modern, 20th century literature, influencing such heavyweights as Ernest Hemingway, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Henry Miller, Herman Hesse, and many others. A quick search of auction records reveals that a single copy of this first translation in wrappers sold in 1994 (copies of the first edition were available both in wrappers and cloth). A scarce and important work. Very Good.
