The Transatlantic Times. Vol. 1, no. 1.

On board the Saint Paul November 15th 1899 - Printed sheet (25 x 20 cm. approx), Signed by Marconi, two of the original recording strips of the radio telegraph have been attached to it. On paper with watermark "Joynson's Parchment" (as indicated by Dunbar), mounted on card. November 15th 1899. There was a second, revised version but the present copy is the original version, recognizable at the letter "R" in the heading where the leg extends into the bow, and the more simple decoration of the line below the caption. First edition. The first newspaper produced on board a moving ship with up-to-date news. This publication is the first time that a press onboard a moving ship produced a bulletin incorporating up-to-date news broadcast by radio to the ship. This paved the way for all two-way communications with ships in the future. To enable this, Marconi set up equipment, previously used for reporting the Americas Cup Yacht race, on board the Saint Paul, sailing from New York to Southampton, and received dispatches from their station at the Needles, Isle of Wight, including news of the Boer War. Marconi was on the Saint Paul to receive the transmissions himself. The first signal was received when the Saint Paul was 66 miles from the Needles. In subsequent years, with increasing range, news was conveyed to ships at more distant positions and incorporated into pre-printed newspapers containing more general articles. Rare. COPAC list only BL and Glasgow University. According to an article by Augustus Hill in the Wireless Magazine, January 1927 p 516, 85 copies were produced to be sold to passengers. However the Marconi archivist in 1975, Mrs Hance, believed more copies were actually produced. The publication was not signed as a matter of course, and it appears that even the Marconi archives do not have a signed example. Mrs Hance speculates that the present copy was one of two signed by Marconi in 1910. Born in 1874, Guglielmo Marconi, whilst a young man in Italy, believed that it was possible to communicate without wires using Hertzian waves. By 1895 he had succeeded in transmitting signals over a few metres. To further his ambitions, Marconi moved to England in 1896 and filed the world's first patent for a system of telegraphy using Hertzian waves. In 1897 he set up a base at the Royal Needles Hotel and communicated with a hired boat. From the beginning Marconi was aware of the potential value of wireless to those at sea. In 1899 he set up a demonstration station on the Goodwin lightship which enabled the lightship to send distress signals when damaged by storm. By now the importance of wireless was becoming widely recognized and it was soon installed aboard three ships in Royal Naval manoeuvres. It was used in the Boer War, and to report the America's Cup races. In November Marconi set up a company in the United States which eventually became RCA. Our copy of the Transatlantic Times is offered together with extensive correspondence between a previous owner and archivists at Marconi, Cunard, and elsewhere. Dunbar, A History of Travel in America, Vol. IV, Indianapolis 1915, S. 1464; Scientific American, Vol. LXXXIX, Nr. 6, New York 1903, p. 100. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Manuscript Children's Magazine Produced by a Club of Young Girls in Scotland]: The Giggler (1899-1904)

Edinburgh, Scotland: The AAFA. 1899-1904. Fourteen issues. Octavos. Illustrated by hand. Each issue in hand-drawn and colored (usually painted) original wrappers. Consecutive run of twelve monthly issues for 1899 (the January issue states "Volume III," whether indicating that there were two previous issues, or two previous annual runs, is not clear); with an additional issue for 1902 (titled The Giggler 1902, with no monthly statement, possibly indicating that only one issue existed for the entire year); and another issue dated Giggler Winter 1903-1904, again possibly indicating a single issue for the year. Both of the later issues are substantially larger than the monthly issues, possibly lending credence to the theory that they are annual issues. Mostly unpaginated, the issues range from eight to over 100 pages, most somewhere in the middle, perhaps totaling somewhere in the vicinity of 400 pages. This literary, humor, and entertainment magazine was created by the AAFA, a club of literate young Scottish girls (with a single small contribution by the young brother of the Waterstons). Mostly accomplished on lined writing paper, with many of the illustrations tipped-in, the series contains dozens of painted illustrations in color, as well as many additional in pen-and-ink. The contents include serial stories and fairy tales, including subjects such as an account of a battle in a Utopia-gone-wrong; a poem about a midnight concert; several illustrated stories told in Negro dialect: "Our Stump Speaker," "Massa Crackabones on Cooking," and others; two long-running series "The Little Indians" and "A Wicked Girl's Plots"; an official report of a picnic the Club had at Craigmillar Castle; "How I Got My Pupils," a fictional story about starting a girl's preparatory school; patterns for doll's dresses; the adventures of a cockney or lower class fellow named Larry; a poem about the sea, "The Boundless Ocean," with albumen photographs used as illustrations; correspondence and criticisms of stories that appeared in previous issues; an announcement and diagrams of a new dance created for the AAFA; puzzles and rebuses; reports of Club meetings (where they vote on nicknames for each other); adventures, "A Dream Competition," a series of stories about "Percival Popp"; a story about trying to convince a brother not to engage in the sport of cockfighting; and his subsequent pursuit of a traveling circus. The final issue has a very amusing announcement in the front: "NOTICE: Any member who has no brothers to study may procure very good specimens from the President for a small sum on condition they are well looked after and returned undamaged. They don't eat much and are nice things to have around the house."The artwork, much of it by Dorothea Waterston, who would have been about 13 in 1899, improves as she gets older and indeed at least one auction record exists at Christie's for one of her adult paintings. Dorothea, her sister Mary, and her brother J.J. (apparently the sole male contributor), were the children of George Waterston, a stationer and proprietor of George Waterston and Sons, Edinburgh, specialist printers, manufacturing and retail stationers, and sealing wax manufacturers founded by his family in 1752. The business records of the firm and extensive family records are held by the National Library of Scotland, although it appears that they hold no copies of The Giggler.Wear, particularly at the spines, some wrappers detached, a few old tape repairs, some tears or modest chips, overall good. The elaborate nature of the issues inveighs strongly against there existing more than a single copy of each issue, and the wear to the issues that were presumably passed from hand-to-hand between the dozen or more Club members and contributors (combined, as well, with the vicissitudes of age), testifies further to these being unique. A charming, wonderfully realized, and sustained literary and artistic production. .

Ukazanie Puti v Tsarstvie Nebesnoe. Pouchenie na Aleutsko-Lis'evskom jazike, sochinennoe svjaschennikom Ioannom Veniaminovym 1833 goda. [Indication to the Way to the Kingdom of Heaven, in Aleut language, composed by Priest Ioann Veniaminov in 1833]

Moscow: Sinodalnaya Typografija, 1899. Octavo, [iv], 114 (paginated in Old Slavonic); old quarter sheep with marbled boards, fine. Rare: evangelical text translated into the Aleut language (and printed in Cyrillic), prepared by Ivan Veniaminov-Popov (1797-1879), the great Orthodox missionary to the northern Pacific. Veniaminov was educated in Irkutsk and chose a theological vocation. As a young man he was selected for the Orthodox mission to Unalaska and arrived there in 1822 with his wife and children. While some conversion had been previously successful, it was feared by the Church that Christian and indigenous beliefs had become merged. The scope of the missionary project soon expanded to include the entire Alaskan peninsula and surrounding islands, a vast and often inhospitable geographical area. For ten years Veniaminov was an intrepid traveller, often using small craft and kayaks to visit coastal settlements, and travelling on foot through rugged mountainous regions. In 1832 he was appointed to a relatively sedentary position at Sitka as minister to the Tlingit of the Northwest Coast.Veniaminov was a skilled linguist fluent in several dialects, he prepared this evangelical text in the Aleut language which was first published by the Moscow Synod in 1840 and later in 1899 (the present edition). Both editions are rare. As a pioneer apostle to the frozen north, Veniaminov was canonized Saint Innocent and holds a cherished place in the history of the Orthodox Church.

American Bar. Utmutato az amerikai husito es hevito italok keszitesehez. [Guide for making American hot and cold beverages]

Budapest: Kapheto Aczél Miksa, 1899. Octavo, 96, iv, [ads], pages. Illustrated. First edition of this rare Hungarian cocktail manual, written and published by the famous eponymous cafe/bar. The recipes and other text is in Hungarian, but the cocktail names are in English, and one can get a good sense of not only the cocktails which had appeared in Budapest, but the available ingredients. The author urges those who would embrace foreign visitors to Budapest to be aware that high quality food and drink will be expected, and that the cocktail need be available. The illustrations depict required barware, and the ads a variety of luxury food and drink items available in Hungary. Some darkening to wrappers at spine, otherwise very good, in publisher's printed brick red wrappers. Rare. While there is a modern facsimile edition available in Hungary, no copy appears in OCLC, and none on any of the lists of major collections which have been made public. We are aware of only one other copy, which is in a private collection and which we placed. [OCLC locates no copies; not in relevant bibliographies].

THE CONVERSION OF PAULA BY ST. JEROME - Alma-Tadema.

THE CONVERSION OF PAULA BY ST. Kunstcriticus F.G. Stephens beschouwde The Coversion of Paula als Alma-Tademas topstuk. Prijs: € 3.250,- (incl. lijst).

        A New Pilgrimage,

London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co.,, 1899. and Other Poems. Small octavo (161 × 95 mm). Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine and in blind to front board, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Title-page printed in red and black. Spine sunned, extremities lightly rubbed, corners bumped, a scattering of white marks to top edge and head of front board, a very good copy. First edition, trade issue, T. E. Lawrence's copy, with his posthumous Clouds Hill bookplate to the front pastedown and his pencilled initials to the front free endpaper. Lawrence was a great admirer of Blunt's, a fellow adventurer turned-Arab sympathiser and anti-imperialist who served as a diplomat for eleven years before marrying Byron's granddaughter, Lady Anne King; soon after the birth of their child in 1873 "the couple departed on the desert travels that were to build their joint reputations for courage and expertise" (ODNB). Blunt's support of the 'Urabi revolt in 1881 made him persona non grata in the higher circles of British politics, his dogged advocacy of Arab interests foreshadowing Lawrence's disappointments some forty years later: "When Blunt denounced European imperialism, he was in turn denounced as only another 'Urabi in a frock coat". Lawrence, having recently agreed to join Churchill's new Middle East Department, wrote to Blunt before setting off for the Cairo Conference in March 1921: "I'll get my way or resign - or even do both things Â… Winston is a new and very keen mind on the Middle East business, and I hope will take it the right way. It's a very great chance given me" (Wilson, Lawrence of Arabia: The Authorised Biography, p. 647. With Feisal offered the throne of Iraq and Abdullah that of the Transjordan, Lawrence was able to fulfil at least some of his promises to the Arabs, though he nevertheless left the Colonial Office in July 1922 and joined the RAF under the name of Ross before enlisting in the tank corps the following year as T. E. Shaw. Writing from Karachi in 1928, he pointed H. H. Banbury, his regimental sergeant-major in the tank corps, to Blunt's 1903 translation of the pre-Islamic Arabic odes known as the Mu'allaqat: "a good translation, into English poetry, by Wilfrid Blunt, a great old man who died lately. His wife, Lady Anne, was an Arabic scholar. She made a prose translation: and Wilfrid, who could speak some Arabic, and liked Arabs, put them into very fine verse" (Garnett, ed., Letters of T. E. Lawrence, p. 584). A superb association, with the additional bookplate of Peter Hopkirk, noted British journalist who wrote widely on Central Asia and the Middle East, to the front pastedown. There was also a deluxe issue of 50 large-paper copies.

Cat's Head in Profile to Left

1899 - Etching showing the head of a dozing cat in profile. Above him, a dream floats: a small mouse, enclosed in a circle partially formed by its own tail. Full of character, from the mouse's slightly frightened eyes to the cat's regal but lazy bearing, and executed with exquisite detail. Tinted using a gray wash, with the mouse highlighted in pink. Monogrammed in the lower left. Cream matting. A very fine example of an early Detmold etching, of which few impressions were ever printed. (Etching measures 5 3/8 by 5 3/8 inches).         Ukazanie Puti v Tsarstvie Nebesnoe. Pouchenie na Aleutsko-Lis'evskom jazike, sochinennoe svjaschennikom Ioannom Veniaminovym 1833 goda. [Indication to the Way to the Kingdom of Heaven, in Aleut language, composed by Priest Ioann Veniaminov in 1833].

WAR IS KIND

1899. [Will Bradley's masterpiece] Drawings by Will Bradley. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1899. Original grey paper boards pictorially decrated in black, with spine label. First Edition of Crane's eighth book, his second volume of verse (some of which had appeared in the 1896 Roycroft Quarterly as "A Souvenir and A Medley"). Crane wrote these poems in Havana, during his nine-month separation from Cora; he called them his "Intrigue" poems, as in general they concerned his love-conflict between Cora (then being foreclosed upon in England) and Lily Brandon Munroe.~Mainly interesting as biography, these poems have been ignored or slighted by Crane's biographers and critics. They are memorable not as poetry but as poetic documents of personal feeling [Stallman].~But today this book is sought just as much for Will Bradley's book design and illustrations: the book is now regarded as typifying the best of American book design of the 1890s. The book was "arranged and printed by Will Bradley," with the text and his many illustrations on the heavy grey paper he chose for this book.~This is a very nearly FINE copy: the spine is slightly browned (less than usual), but there is scarcely any wear (typically the spine ends are chipped away, but not here). Williams & Starrett 20; Blanck 4083. Housed in a custom clamshell case.
