Hugh Stowell Scott (9 May 1862 – 19 November 1903) was a prominent English novelist who used the pseudonym Henry Seton Merriman. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, he became an underwriter at Lloyd's of London, but then devoted himself to travel and to writing novels, many of which had great popularity. Scott visited India as a tourist in 1877–78 and set his novel Flotsam (1896) there. He was an enthusiastic traveller, many of his journeys being undertaken with his friend and fellow author Stanley J. Weyman. Scott married Ethel Frances Hall (1865–1943) on 19 June 1889. The couple had no children. Scott was unusually modest and retiring in character. He died of appendicitis, aged 41, at Melton, Suffolk. Upon his death, Scott left £5000 to Evelyn Beatrice Hall, his sister-in-law and fellow writer, best known for her biographical work The Friends of Voltaire, writing that the legacy was "in token of my gratitude for her continued assistance and literary advice, without which I should never have been able to have made a living by my pen." His first novel, Young Mistley was published anonymously in 1888. His other novels include The Phantom Future (the only novel of his set entirely in England, 1889), The Slave of the Lamp (1892), From One Generation to Another (1892), The Sowers (generally considered his best, set in Russia, where it was banned) (1896), In Kedar's Tents (1897), Roden's Corner (1898), Suspense, Dross (1899), Slave of the Lamp, With Edged Tools (a bestseller in 1894), Grey Lady, Isle of Unrest (1900), The Velvet Glove, The Vultures (1902), Queen (1903), Barlasch of the Guard (1903) and "The Last Hope" (1904).

Stanford White, architect of the Quadriga atop Brooklyn's Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, writes to the bronzes' sculptor Frederick W. MacMonnies in Paris that "nobody has yet turned up from Barbedienne," the French foundry that produced the bronzes

New York, New York, August 30, 1898. 8" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ""aff[ectionatel]y / White,"" 1 page, 8"" x 10.5"". On McKim, Mead & White letterhead, New York, August 30,1898. To sculptor Frederick W. MacMonnies, Paris. Salutation ""Dear Mac"" in White's hand. Fine condition. In full, ""The bronzes for the Quadriga have arrived, but nobody has yet turned up from Barbedienne, Wont you go to Allard & Son's, 29 Rue de Londres, and ask to see a little head of Velasquez, which Boldini sent me a wild telegram about, and which I bought on the telegram and a photograph which had been sent over? Please do this as soon as you can, and let me know what you think of it.""The Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch at the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, New York, across from the main entrance to Prospect Park at Flatbush Avenue, is a triumphal arch dedicated ""To the Defenders of the Union, 1861-1865."" Olmstead and Vaux, the landscape architects of Prospect Park, in collaboration with architect Stanford White, designed the Arch. General W.T. Sherman spoke at the laying of the cornerstone in 1889 and President Grover Cleveland spoke at the 1892 unveiling.McKim, Mead and White recommended bronze status and, in 1894, Frederick W. MacMonnies was hired by the City of Brooklyn to design the bronze sculptural groupings. MacMonnies added Army and Navy sculptures and the allegorical crowning sculpture atop the Arch. It depicts three female sculptures, the winged goddess of victory in the center following victorious combat with instruments of war and the Quadriga representing the Union Army: two winged female attendants are seen removing two of the four Quadriga horses for peacetime use while trumpeting the victory and emancipation. The Quadriga was cast in Paris at the LeBlanc Barbedienne Foundry. The November 6, 1898, edition of the New-York Tribune pictured ""Brooklyn's Quadriga … Being Placed on the Memorial Arch…"" The February 12, 1899, edition of The New York Times reported ""The Quadriga of Frederick MacMonnies has been placed upon the Soldiers and Sailors' Memorial Arch at the main entrance to Prospect Park, Brooklyn … It is a colossal bronze group representing the triumph of American arms and the dignity of the Nation … This great work of art was placed upon the arch recently without any ceremony attending it … The work was to be completed by MacMonnies in two years in Paris, where he now resides. The sculptor, however, took four years to finish the group to his satisfaction…"""

The Ballad of Reading Gaol. London: Leonard Smithers, 1898. First Edition Thus, one of 99 copies Signed by the Author

Leonard Smithers 1898 - Original white linen backed purple cloth with design in gilt on upper cover by Charles Ricketts, collector's light brown cloth slipcase. A very good copy. The elimination of self had its apogee in The Ballad of Reading Gaol. Its theme was the man hanged in Reading while Wilde was there, Charles Thomas Wooldridge (1866-1897), trooper of the Royal Horse Guards, who had murdered his wife. With high dramatic sense Wilde turned the sufferings of all the other convicts into a subordinate but supportive chorus. The poem made no denial of guilt, although its hanged prisoner ultimately suffered more than the rest, and embodied their agonies more intensely.' (Owen Dudley Edwards, Oxford DNB). Wilde first suggested this edition in a letter to his publisher dated 18 February 1898: '.why not print some copies on some special paper - not Japanese; that you have done. I want to distribute about ten copies in Paris, and don't like to give second editions to people ' (Complete Letters, p.1018). A week later, on 25 February 1898, Wilde asked Smithers to '.see about. the Author's Edition with a cover by Ricketts - a new colour and a remarque in gold' (Complete Letters, p.1025). The edition was sold at 10s.6d. and this led Wilde to complain: 'I think 10/6 for copies signed by the author too little. My signature should be worth more than Japanese paper. Think of this point.' (Complete Letters, p.1031). The signed leaves were returned to Smithers at the beginning of March 1898. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Tuya, Other Verses and Translations from Jose Marti

J.E. Richardson, New York 1898 - First edition. Octavo. 75, [5]pp., frontispiece portraits of Charles and Marti. White cloth gilt. Contemporary owner's name repeated on front and rear fly leaves, slight soiling, a nice, near fine copy. Poems of the war in Cuba by a woman about whom little is known (the contemporary *New York Times* review speculated that she is Cuban), but probably more importantly this meager translation (about a dozen pages) is one of the first translations of Marti's verse into English, just three years after his death. Marti, a Cuban patriot-poet was killed in battle trying to gain Cuban independence from Spain, and is considered one of the great Latin-American intellectuals, a modernist poet, and a Cuban national hero. Very uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE KLONDYKE NUGGET. By S.F. Cody.

Belfast, Ireland: David Allen & Sons, [1898]. - Chromolithographic poster, 20 x 30 inches. Losses and tears along bottom edge, not affecting image; several small tears at other edges. Some light soiling. Image bright and fresh. Promotional flyer for a local theatre pasted to right edge. Good plus. A rare poster for the popular stage play, THE KLONDYKE NUGGET, written and performed by S.F. Cody throughout the British Isles at the end of the 19th century. Samuel Franklin Cody (1867- 1913) was a unique figure in late Victorian Anglo-American popular entertainment. Born Samuel Franklin Cowdery, he later changed his surname to capitalize on the fame of Buffalo Bill Cody, even mimicking Buffalo Bill's clothing and facial hair style. Born in Texas, S.F. Cody trained in the Forepaugh Wild West Show, and found much of his fame in England. He is renowned in the history of aviation as the first man to conduct a powered flight in England, and he later developed large kites that were used for artillery spotting during World War I. Cody's life was filled with tall tales (though some of them are perhaps true), including his claim that he prospected for gold in Dawson City during the Klondike Gold Rush. That story set the groundwork for the theatrical play advertised herein, where Cody plays the role of George Exelby; Lela Cody, his (common law) second wife, the part of Rosie; and her son, Edward LeRoy, plays Joe Smith. The poster shows Cody at the center, surrounded by an angry mob wielding guns. To the left are four other figures, including Lela and an Indian on horseback. An ad for the Clarence Theatre in Pontypridd is pasted to the right side of the sheet, dated Monday December 19, indicating that the play runs through the week.
