The Sign Writer and Glass Embosser.

William Sutherland 1898 - 1898. 59 pages. No dust jacket. Brown cloth boards with black decoration. A large book. Pages have tanning, with shadowing and foxing to the first chapter page. The page fore edges are frayed|chipped, most likely due to the very weak binding. The bottom of the binding has completely cracked. The title page and ffep is loose from the binding, and has a very tatter edge. Only a few plates still remain with the book, including Plate XXI, XV, VII, XXXII, XXVIII, XXIII, and XIX. page 61 loose. Back pastedown slip pouch still remains. The netting is very much exposed. The boards have rub wear to the edges, with scuffing the surfaces. There is heavy bleaching to the front board at the bottom left corner, and also to the back panel in the same location, obviously caused by water damage and mildewing. Faint water marks to the pages.         [Album of Historic Pictures]

Tokyo, Fukuda Hatsujiro, , 1898. Octavo. (230 × 180mm) Original tan decoratively printed cotton-covered boards, paper label to the upper panel, title translates as above. Contains 12 oban yoko-e, horizontal oban, colour woodblock prints, folded concertina-style, opening 350 × 230mm. Split at one connecting fold, carefully reattached with archival tissue, else very good. Twelve scenes selected from Chikanobu's treatment of the heike monogatari [Tales of Heike], retelling the events of the Genpei War between the ruling Taira clan and their arch-enemies the Minamoto. Most likely compiled for the tourist trade, this selection concentrates on scenes of samurai prowess, rather than the more lyrical or courtly aspects of the tale, Oda Nobunaga leaping across the flames of the Honno-ji to evade yari of Yasuda Sakubei; the warrior-monk Yokugawa Kakuhan fighting in the snow with Sato Tadanobu; & the struggle between the warrior woman Tomoe Gozen, Uchida Ieyoshi, and Wada Yoshimori at the Uji River.

        THE MOTOGRAPH MOVING PICTURE BOOK

London, Bliss, Sands & Co., 1898.. FIRST COLOURED ENGLISH EDITION 1898, (Preface states "New edition in colours"), 4to, 300 x 235 mm, 11¾ x 9 inches, cloth backed boards with large coloured illustration to upper cover specially commissioned from Toulouse Lautrec by the original French publishers (indoor scene, 2 women, 1 apparently playing with this book, large dog in foreground, man with pipe walking into room, cat and cockatoo), endpapers carry publisher's adverts. 23 full page coloured illustrations, attributed on title page to F.J. Vernay, Yorick etc., printed one side only. Most illustrations are very interesting: Water Mill, Serpentine Dancer, Harlequin, Traction Engine, Mortar Mill, Steamboat, Volcano, Scissors Grinder, Life Boat, The Cat and the Cherub (little black boy crying in bath-tub watched by cat), House on Fire etc., (3 are geometric). The book was supplied with a 'transparency' (rectangular sheet of thin clear plastic printed with horizontal lines, mounted in a card frame, housed in pocket inside front cover) which when moved as indicated over the pictures, produced an illusion of movement. Corners very slightly worn, showing cardboard at tips, board edges slightly worn, covers slightly dusty-looking, upper cover slightly rubbed, a couple of small stains and some scratches to lower cover, spine cloth slightly faded, free endpapers lightly browned, transparency pocket on front pastedown lacking lower side, an occasional pale fingermark mostly to lower margins, otherwise contents clean, small piece missing from lower outer margin corner of 1 plate, tiny closed tear with tiny chip to edge of lower margin of Butterfly plate. A very good copy with original transparency still in its cardboard frame but split in half vertically and with another small closed tear. This is an expanded edition of the uncoloured version published the same year but with only 13 illustrations and without the Toulouse Lautrec cover with some of the same illustrations and some new ones such as 'The Harlequin', 'The Cat and the Cherub', 'The Magic Head'. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1898. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Here is a scarce first edition, first printing of the Colonial edition of Churchill's first book, which recounts his experiences when attached to Sir Bindon Blood's punitive expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. First printing Colonial editions were produced in small numbers simultaneously with the Home Issue. The harsher climate and condition of the colonies meant low survival rates and often poor condition for those few examples that endured. Complicating matters for collectors, there were no fewer than 10 different editions, printings, and binding variations for the very small number of Colonial issues ultimately produced from 1898 to 1901. Offered here is the important first printing of the Colonial edition in the second state. As is the case with the Home Issue first edition, second state copies are distinguished by the presence of the domestic errata slip. This is an original, unrestored copy, meaning it has not been rebacked or had endpapers replaced like so many of the copies that survive. The binding is overall clean, tight, and square but of course shows some age The pictorial front board retains strong color and only minimal scuffing. There is mild bubbling to the boards and light corner wear. There is also a small old cellotape remnant at the bottom edge of the top board (this apparently from a poorly applied plastic cover that once protected the binding). The spine is nicely rounded with the gilt still clearly legible. There is some wear and fraying at the head and tail and some wrinkling to the spine cloth. The contents are unusually bright and tight for a Colonial edition, with just light intermittent spotting. All maps are intact and properly folded. There is a contemporary inked owner name dated "Oct. 1898" on the ffep (conveniently dispelling any doubt that this is a first printing). Tissue guards are still present at the frontispiece and the folding map at p.1. Many Colonial editions we see seem to have spent time in private lending libraries. This might explain the number "854" inked on the spine, the ffep, and the title page and on a sticker on the front pastedown. There are no other ex-library indications or marks or residue. Overall, a well-preserved copy of a very scarce first printing. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A1.2.d, Woods/ICS A1(ab.1), Langworth p.15

Emission of neutrons by uranium AND Ein einfacher Versuch zur Auffindung eines selektiven Effektes.

      - On Nuclear Fission, Presented by Leo SzilardSzilard, Leo (1898-1964). (1) (with W. H. Zinn) Emission of neutrons by uranium. Offprint from Phys. Rev. 56 (1939). 619-624pp. Text illustrations. Without wrappers as issued. Inscribed, "With Compliments of Leo Szilard" on first page. (with H. Mark) Ein einfacher Versuch zur Auffindung eines selektiven Effektes bei der Zerstreuung von Rontgenstrahlen. Offprint from Zeit. Phys. 33 (1925). 688-691pp. Text illustrations. Original printed wrappers. (2) From the library of Theodore von Karrman (1881-1963). Both offprints docketed and stamped with Karrman's cataloguing symbols. Very good. Offprints preserved in mylar envelopes.First Separate Editions. Szilard's first offprint is on nuclear fission. After Hahn and Strassmann's discovery of nuclear fission in 1938, Szilard immediately recognized "that fission would be the key to the release of nuclear energy, and he immediately undertook experiments at Columbia University to demonstrate the release of neutrons in the fission process and to measure their number" (DSB). His paper of 1939 reflects his continuing work on this problem before wartime secrecy suppressed his publications on the subject. In 1942 Szilard and Fermi produced the first controlled nuclear chain reaction, and shortly afterwards he arranged for Einstein to write the letter to President Roosevelt that brought about the establishment of the Manhattan Project. Szilard's second paper is on the scattering of x-rays. These offprints are from the library of physicist Theodore von Karman, who, like Szilard, was a Hungarian expatriate who ended up in the United States. Szilard typically gave his ideas to collaborators who organized them into papers for publication. Inscriptions by him on anything to do with nuclear fission are extremely rare! Robert Osmond engraved this elaborate armorial for Charles Hesketh Fleetwood-Hesketh (1871-1947) in l911. With two helms and crests, and elaborate mantling on a shaded ground, this shows Osmond at his most ambitious.
