On the Bright Shore [Signed] [Na jasnym brzegu]

Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1898. Second edition. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (mildly askew, very light wear to the spine ends and board corners), SIGNED BY HENRYK SIENKIEWICZ on the second front free endpaper. Originally published in Poland as "Na jasnym brzegu" (1897) this is the first authorized English translation of the work. [Another translation, done by S. C. de Soissons, was earlier published as "On the Sunny Shore " by Fenno (New York, 1897).] One of the most popular Polish writers of his era, Henryk Sienkiewicz won the 1905 Nobel Prize in Literature for his "outstanding merits as an epic writer", making him the first Pole, and the fifth person overall, to win the Prize. Signed copies of Sienkiewicz's works in any language and in any edition are extraordinarily scarce -- our search revealed no signed Sienkiewicz books coming to auction in the past 85 years, and signed copies in English translation are hen's teeth. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY HENRYK SIENKIEWICZ.

        Tales of Unrest

London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1898. London: T. Fisher Unwin,, 1898. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, Boots library logo to upper board in blind. Housed in a green cloth slipcase and chemise. Ownership signature on front pastedown removed. Cloth a little rubbed with some bumps and marks, Boots logo significantly abraded, hinges cracked, free endpapers tanned, gutter cracked in a few places, contents faintly toned, chip and repaired closed tear to rear free endpaper, library stamp and remnants of library ticket to rear pastedown. A very good copy. First English edition, first impression, first domestic issue. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to his literary agent on the front free endpaper, "For J. B. Pinker, Joseph Conrad". J. B. Pinker (1863–1922) was one of the first of the professional literary agents who established themselves in the wake of the technological and copyright changes that were compartmentalising the marketplace. "Establishing himself in an office in Arundel Street, London, in early 1896, Pinker set out to exploit the potential of this newly emerging profession, with H. G. Wells as one of his first clients. Within two years his skill at negotiating rights and contracts for authors in both the American and British markets had established him as one of the leading literary agents of his time, alongside Alexander Pollock Watt and the American-born Curtis Brown" (ODNB). Pinker was generous to Conrad, advancing large sums in the belief that his client's star was rising, and Conrad was not fully able to repay him until 1919, when the motion picture rights to four of his stories were purchased. Because the partnership had not yet been established when Tales of Unrest was published in 1898, it is likely that Conrad purchased this copy later to present to Pinker, and given the strained nature of their relationship, it is not surprising that an ex-library copy was chosen. Inscribed copies of Conrad's books published before 1900 are exceptionally rare, and no other signed or inscribed copies of Tales of Unrest have appeared at auction since 1990. A wonderful association. From the library of Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger, with his bookplate.

Journey from Peking to Shanghai Overland. Report on a Journey from Peking to Shanghai overland by way of Honan by Mr S.F. Mayers of Her Majesty's Consular Service in China. Diplomatic and Consular Reports. Miscellaneous Series. No. 466

Foreign Office., June,1898.. [London].: Foreign Office.. June,1898.. 16pp, original blue printed wrappers, string ties, numbers neatly written in ink lower edge, very good copy. This journey of approximately 900 miles was made along "the line of country which will probably be taken by any railway of the future connecting Peking with the cities of the central and southern provinces." This well written report is replete with observations across a wide range of topics, from the trade observed to the Christian missions encountered. At times Myers and his party were made well aware of anti foreign feeling and experienced a general lack of safety "Everyone goes armed on this road, though not always visibly. But a safe rule might be laid down that if a man has no weapons visible, he is a robber and to be avoided, for he probably has a gun up his sleeve". Scarce. .

        WESSEX POEMS. And Other Verses

New York and London Harper and Brothers 1898 - First Edition. With 30 illustrations by the author. 8vo, publisher’s original blue ribbed cloth, the spine lettered in gilt, upper cover with Hardy’s floral monogram device in gilt. xi, 228 pp. A very handsome and pleasing copy, internally very fine and essentially pristine, the cloth very well preserved, spine just a tad mellowed. FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH. A lovely copy of Hardy’s first significant publishing venture as a poet. Though better known now as a novelist, Hardy rated poetry above fiction. Like many of his novels, the landscapes of Dorset echoes throughout his writing. The poetry is scarce, unadorned and surprisingly modern. Though first published in 1898 it contains poems he’d been working on since the 1860s. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Erste deutsche Ausgabe und erste Übersetzung überhaupt.- Dibner, Heralds of Science 135; Waller 7257; Fischer 1183; Heirs of Hippocrates 2129: "The work of the Russian physiologist Pavlov ind the field of physiology of digestion led to his beeing awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1904. His demonstration of conditioned reflexes and automatic responses in dogs had consequences not only for medicine, but for political practices, the sociological sciences, and psychological as well. The first edition in German is the first translation of this classic work on digestive glands, published in Russia the year before." - Tadellos erhalten.         Real estate in Texas, in Part [manuscript title on verso of front endpaper].

      - Ownership signature on front endpaper "Property of John E. Roller, Harrisonburg, VA." Harrisonburg, VA, Archer City, TX, and other locations, nd [ca. 1898]. 16mo. 120 numbered pages (of which 40 have been used for manuscript entries, in pencil and ink); approximately 3500 words. Roller (1844-1918), a native of Rockingham County, Virginia, entered the Virginia Military Institute in December, 1861, and graduated in July, 1863, entering Confederate army service immediately as second lieutenant, Company G, 2nd Confederate States Engineers, and serving to the end of the conflict with the Army of Northern Virginia. Following the war, he resided in Harrisonburg, Virginia, working as a lawyer, state legislator, and brigadier general in the Virginia state militia. Good copy, the manuscript quite legible. Cheap leather (spine completely eroded, as are edges and corners). (#6204) This neatly written journal, probably kept by one or more of Roller's agents in Texas, gives a detailed picture of his agricultural property in Knox County, the River Valley and Holliday Creek near Wichita Falls, and town lots in Archer City and Wichita Falls (in all, some 6000 acres). The journal provides a full description of each property, including access to water, railroad stations, churches, and schools, and in some cases titles to the land are traced. One of the farms "needs 300 lbs. of wire to repair and rebuild fence for the benefit and protection of the place; they are now building a wooden bridge 46 feet in length over Holliday Creek on the east line of this place — crops all in good condition — lands level." Information on the crops, trees, dwellings, and out-buildings are recorded; some properties had a good supply of pecan trees, some Mesquite trees were big enough for fence posts; some properties were leased to farmers who grew corn, wheat, and oats as cash crops. At the end of the journal, an agent has recorded a "to-do" list which includes a note to get "original contracts of tenants and take copies and send one to Gen. John E. Roller and retain one." In addition to various farm properties, Roller owned 30 town lots in Archer City. The agent was circumspect about them: "There can be little said about the Archer City lots, they are not fenced or marked but I had some of them located for me — some are located very well but others are too far out. Archer City is hoping for a Rail Road — if they get it their town will build up and your lots will be worth something. The County treasurer told me your lots were worth from ten to twenty five dollars a piece — I asked him if he would give that for them, he said no not now." (According to the Handbook of Texas, Archer City finally got its railroad in 1910.) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

MEMOIRS OF ALEXANDER GARDNER Soldier and Traveller

Blackwood , 1898. Blackwood , 1898. First edition. Original brick-red cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and in black on the upper cover. A very good copy with evidence of a label being removed from the front board and a small bump to the head of the rear board. Front hinge repaired. Frontispiece photogravure portrait of Gardner bedecked in a tartan salvar kameez with matching turban. One other plate and two maps. Alexander Gardner (1785-1877), was an American adventurer and mercenary of Scottish extraction. He travelled Afghanistan, joining the rebel Habibullah, and then to the Punjab commanding units of Ranjit Sigh's artillery forces. He recorded his adventures in contemporary diaries recounting them, apparently with embellishments, as an elderly man to Major Hugh Pearse. They have since gone down in literary folklore. Gardner is one of the historical characters who plays a part in G.M. Fraser's Flashman books.
