The Story of the Malakand Field Force, An Episode of Frontier War, the first printing of the Colonial edition with the Indian errata slip

Longmans, Green, & Co., London 1898 - This book is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. Here is a scarce first edition, first printing of the Colonial Library issue of Churchill's first book, bearing the unusual and rarely seen Indian errata slip arranged personally by Churchill. The author's first book recounts his experiences when attached to Sir Bindon Blood's punitive expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. First printing copies of the Colonial issue were produced in small numbers simultaneously with the Home Issue. The harsher climate and condition of the colonies meant low survival rates and often poor condition for those few examples that endured. Complicating matters for collectors, there were no fewer than 10 different editions, printings, and binding variations for the very small number of Colonial issues ultimately produced from 1898 to 1901. Here is the important first printing of the Colonial issue made all the more scarce by the presence of the unusual and scarce Indian errata slip unique to this particular Colonial issue. Publication of the first edition of 1898 was arranged by Churchill's uncle while the author was still in India, resulting in numerous spelling and detail errors. Churchill was incensed by the errors and acted with haste to address them. Per Cohen in his Bibliography: "Colonial Library copies are known with an unusual errata slip, which was prepared in India on or about 7 April 1898. It was, therefore, in all likelihood available in first edition copies in India before the domestic errata slips were available in London and certainly before the domestic errata slips were available in India." (Cohen p.14). Churchill was still serving in India at the time. In a 22 March 1898 letter to his mother, Churchill lamented the "gross & fearful blunders" of the first edition and stated: "I may catch the Indian edition, in which the absurdities would be most laughed at." Evidence indicates that Churchill himself personally arranged for the printing of the Indian slips, paid for them himself, and had them tipped into the Colonial copies before distribution. These unique errata contain four additional corrections not found on the domestic errata slip, as well as small differences in the other corrigenda. Given the provenance of the unique Indian errata slip, we can be confident that this copy originally sold in India, where the young author was serving at the time. This is an original, unrestored copy, meaning it has not been rebacked or had endpapers replaced like so many of the copies that survive. Condition is about very good given the edition and colonial provenance. The binding is sound with a forward lean, some wear to hinges and extremities, and modest overall soiling. The pictorial front board retains strong color with some surface scuffing and edge wear. The spine is nicely rounded with the gilt still clearly legible, though with some fraying at the spine ends. The contents are quite respectable for a colonial issue, with toning to the page edges and light spotting primarily confined to the prelims and page edges. The frontispiece and original tissue guard are intact and the maps are present and properly folded. The binding remains intact but a bit tender, with a cosmetic split between the half title and frontispiece versos exposing the mull beneath. There is an indecipherable previous owner name inked on the half title and the ffep has been excised. Overall, a well-preserved and completely original copy of this first printing of the first Colonial Library issue, sold in India while Churchill was still there.         Andree's Balloon Expedition in Search of the North Pole

New York - Frederick A. Stokes, 1898. New York - Frederick A. Stokes, 1898 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A fascinating and engaging travel narrative of a quest for the north pole, conducted in a balloon. Featuring a frontispiece and numerous illustrations in the text, many photographic. Lovely balloon themed bookplate of Mike Willoughby to front pastedown, and ink balloon stamp stating 'The Mike Willoughby Collection' to rear pastedown. The two writers were Andree's assistant in the preparation, equipment and departure of the balloon. Salomon August Andre (October 18, 1854, Granna, Smaland October 1897), during his lifetime most often known as S. A. Andree, was a Swedish engineer, physicist, aeronaut and polar. S. A. Andree's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897 was an ill-fated effort to reach the North Pole in which all three expedition members perished. S. A. Andree (185497), the first Swedish balloonist, proposed a voyage by hydrogen balloon from Svalbard to either Russia or Canada, which was to pass, with luck, straight over the North Pole on the way. The scheme was received with patriotic enthusiasm in Sweden, a northern nation that had fallen behind in the race for the North Pole. Condition: In a decorative cloth binding. Externally smart with just a little shelfwear. The front hinge is weak. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        The Ingoldsby Legends

London - E. H. Wells, 1898. London - E. H. Wells, 1898 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce edition of this collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham. Illustrated throughout with numerous engraved plates. In 1826 Barham first contributed to Blackwood's Magazine; and in 1837 he began to furnish to a recently-initiated magazine, Bentley's Miscellany, the series of tales (most of them metrical, some in prose) known as The Ingoldsby Legends. Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell, seventh baronet (18451937), politician and author. His early education at home and at private schools aroused his interest in natural history and allied subjects. He acquired much miscellaneous information outside the normal subjects of school and university, on which he was to base the self-education of later years. Maxwell settled at Monreith, helping his father to manage the estate, acquiring a unique knowledge of the people and countryside of Wigtownshire, of which he was lord lieutenant from 1903 to 1935, and establishing his reputation as a sportsman in angling, shooting, and horsemanship. Between 1887 and 1932, beginning with novels, Maxwell wrote, in addition to several biographies, books on topography, natural, local, and national history, archaeology, horticulture, and sport, as well as making numerous contributions to scientific and other periodicals. His Memories of the Months ran to seven series (18971922), of which the first three reached revised editions (19312). Robert the Bruce and the Struggle for Scottish Independence (1897) and a Life of Wellington (1899) are typical of his historical work. His editing of the Creevey Papers (2 vols. , 1903) provided a valuable supplement to the Greville Memoirs. His Rhind lecturerships in archaeology at Edinburgh (1893 and 1911), presidency of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (190013), and chairmanship of the National Library of Scotland (192532), testified to his services to learning. Johnson, American First Editions, p. 128 (noting three issues but not distinguishing among them). & ¶ "Following the success of the Red Badge of Courage [in 1895], Crane was recruited by the Bacheller syndicate as a star journalist. He travelled to the West and Mexico, writing vivid reports on the landscapes and the people he encountered and gaining material for such later stories as “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky” [in the present collection]. Shortly after returning from Mexico, he boarded the Commodore, an illegal, gun-running ship, in Jacksonville, Florida, to report on the Cuban revolution against Spanish colonialism. But the ship sank in the Caribbean Sea, and he was reported in the press as having died in the shipwreck. In fact, Crane, with three other men, struggled in a small dinghy for 36 hours to reach the Florida coast. One man, the oiler from the Commodore, died in the surf. As a result of his near-death adventure at sea, Crane published a newspaper dispatch ["Stephen Crane's Own Story"] and, later [in Scribner's Magazine], one of his most highly regarded stories, “The Open Boat." (Literary Encyclopedia) Praised for its innovation by contemporary critics, The Open Boat is considered an exemplary work of literary Naturalism, and is one of the most frequently discussed works in Crane's canon. H. G. Wells thought "The Open Boat" to be "beyond all question, the crown of all [Crane's] work." N. B.
