"WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE" In: THE COSMOPOLITAN: A MONTHLY ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE

Irvington-on-the-Hudson, NY: The Cosmopolitan,. April-December 1897 (volume 22, number 6-volume 24, number 2). original tan wrappers printed in red and back.. Wrappers (printed in pulpy paper) are worn and/or lightly chipped at. spine ends and worn, frayed and/or lightly chipped along overlapping. fore and bottom edges, a few issues have soiling and/or mild stains. to covers, still, this is a very good set overall (some issues closer. to fine, several closer to good), the interiors, printed on high-. quality coated stock which renders the artwork and type in high. detail, are mostly fine, a couple of minor soil marks noted in one. issue. The serial in either COSMOPOLITAN or PEARSON magazine is. usually found in bound up volumes, neither is common as separate. numbers in their original paper wrappers. (#118677). These nine issues of THE COSMOPOLITAN contain the complete American serial publication of "The War of the Worlds," a classic scientific romance, desirable for the many illustrations by Warwick Goble embedded in elaborate wraparound text layouts that were possible in this larger (6 3/4" x 9 1/2") physical format -- vis a vis a smaller octavo book format. This serialized version features a total of fifty-seven unique illustrations by Goble (several are used more than once) -- far more than the fifteen selected for the first U.S. edition (New York: Harper, 1898). (The first edition [London: Heinemann, 1898] had no illustrations.) A must for the serious collector of Wells, interplanetary fiction, future war fiction, the early scientific romance, early visualizations of sf motifs -- a classic such as this marks the intersection of many important categories, not to mention some that are less often connected with it, such as the vampire motif (the aliens use long mechanical tentacles to suck the blood out of human bodies). THE COSMOPOLITAN serial ran simultaneously with its British counterpart in PEARSON'S MAGAZINE.

        The Faerie Queen

Westminster: Archibald Constable & Co,, 1897-00. Edited from the Original Editions of 1590 and 1596 with an Introduction and Glossary by Kate M. Warren. 6 volumes, octavo (172 × 105 mm). Finely bound in near-contemporary red quarter morocco with pink cloth sides and a gilt rules, spines gilt-tooled with an art nouveau floral design and titles direct, attractive green and gilt florally patterned endpapers and top edges gilt. Frontispiece to each volume: three portrait frontispieces of Spenser and three photographic frontispieces of Spenser-related places in Ireland. Spines a little sunned, corners nicked; an entirely sound set in excellent condition. A lovely set of Spenser's Faerie Queene; the first edition to be edited by literary scholar and anthologist Kate M. Warren, using the original editions of 1590 and 1596, with an introduction and glossary to each book. Volume one bears the presentation bookplate for the Birmingham Oratory school prize (for which this set was likely bound) to "T. Fitzherbert-Brockholes, Fifth Form Prize, Midsummer 1913, [Father] John Norris". Thomas Fitzherbert-Brockholes, born 1887, died, less than two years after receiving this school prize book, from wounds after the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, on Sunday 14th March 1915, which was Mothering Sunday, if Spenser's own lines, "and whenas death shall all the world subdue, / our love shall live, and later life renew" (Amoretti #75), do not make this poignant enough. A very attractive and affecting copy.

Original Art: Veiled King on Throne Surrounded by Nymphs and Soldiers

1897. Original art. Watercolor. Image matted to approximately 13.25" x 17.5". Framed. Signed lower right: "A.C. 97." Matted in tan suede (preserving the worn, yellow silk matte below). A couple of light scratches on the image, still fine. A wonderful and haunting image of a veiled king on his thrown, surrounded by diaphanously clad (or altogether unclad) serving women. Born and trained in France, Castaigne came to America where he was active in San Francisco until the earthquake, then moved to New York where he was a prolific illustrator for both magazines and books, particularly those published by the Century Company. Perhaps his best known illustrations are the striking two-page illustrations in the American edition of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera. .

Maxim aerial Torpedo. A new system of throwing high exposives from ordnance, and some recent improvements in smokeless powders

Lon., 1897.. b/w photographic frontispiece, b/w plates. Hudson Maxim was the brother of Hiram (Maxim machine gun) and a developer of modern smokeless powder and other high explosives, the rights to which he eventually sold to Dupont. In this work, apparently published privately, his “aerial torpedoes” are essentially giant naval guns charged with his new smokeless powder, designed to shoot massive shells (up to 1000 pounds) loaded with gun cotton. The photographic frontispiece shows partially burned particles of smokeless powder. The pages are printed on recto only. Text and illustrations are precise, technical, yet still understandable - as Hudson, with rigorous logic, frames his airtight argument for smokeless powder and aerial torpedoes. With the bookplate of Wican Library on the front pastedown, their blindstamp in the lower corner of the title page, small ink stamp on the verso, and no other markings. Bound in blue cloth with gold cover and spine lettering. Light wear to spine ends. Most unusual.

12 Originale skisser og akvareller fra - Original Scetches and Watercolors from: W. M. Conway: The First Crossing of Spitsbergen (1897).

Skissene måler ca. 36 x 26 cm. The scetches are about 36 x 26 cm (14,5 x 10 in.) High quality photos on request. Conways fetter H. E. Conway, men han er nevnt gjentatte ganger i Conways bok fra ekspedisjonen, The First Crossing of Spitsbergen (1897).Alle de tolv skissene og akvarellene som presenteres her, er gjengitt i boken. There is not much information about W.M. Conways cousin H.E. Conway, but in the book from the expedition, The First Crossing of Spitsbergen (1897), he is mentioned several times. All scetches and water colours presented here, are printed in the book."My cousin, H. E. Conway, came as the artist of the expedition. He worked industriously and with no little skill in most uncomfortable surroundings and ungenial weather. The present volume contains many of his notes, whilst his sketches in water-colour and oil have already been exhibited to the public." (From "The First Crossing of Spitsbergen" 1897 -pg. 10)"I asked Conway's leave to visit this [Dickson] bay while he was occupied with others of his party in crossing to Agardh Bay. This leave he most kindly gave. His cousin, H. E. Conway, the artist to the expedition, was also to come; at least until we found a place for an artist's studies. (...) Conway with admirable perseverance managed to make a sketch in oils despite of the wet." (pg. 239-40)"Not a little of the memory of a very happy time I owe to the unfailing cheeriness and good fellowship, under often dull conditions, of our artist H. E. Conway, my friend and companion at the Flower-Garden." (p. 251).
