        THE SAVOY

London: Leonard Smithers, 1896. The Collected issue. Very bright and sound copies with only minor flaws: trifling wear to the extremities, some light toning with faint foxing to endpapers, quarter-inch tear to crown of Vol II.. The Collected issue. Complete run, nos. 1-8 in 3 volumes. Ads present at the end of numbers 2-8. In the original bindings of violet cloth, the front covers with pictorial design in gilt adapted from the title-page of No. 1, the lower covers with the "Puck on Pegasus" device. Complete with the paper covers bound in and with the tipped-in Christmas card in No. 2. "The Savoy is perhaps the most mature and consistent periodical to express the literary and artistic culture of the Nineties in England. In the first number, Symonds stated that 'All we ask from our contributors is good work, and good work is all we offer our readers... We have no formulas... We have not invented a new point of view.' In an epilogue in the final number he observed, 'We assumed that there were very many people in the world who really cared for art, and really for art's sake. The more I consider it, the more I realize that this is not the case. Comparatively few people care for art at all, and most of these care for it because they mistake it for something else.'" (The Turn Of A Century. p. 35). "The cover Beardsley made for the first number of The Savoy... is an important drawing and the title-page is as fine as anything he ever did. In the harmonious correlation of all its elements, not forgetting the lettering, proclaim the fact that no artist working in black and white has ever attained greater perfection." (Gallatin. Aubrey Beardsley, p. 6). Lasner 103, p. 63.

The Alhambra; With An Introduction By Elizabeth Robins Pennell Illustrated With Drawings Of The Places Mentioned By Joseph Pennell

London - Macmillan 1896 - Washington Irving's collection of essays, verbal sketches and tales, centred around the eponymous Alhambra Palace in Granada, the illustrated Pennel edition. The illustrations by Pennell are particularly admired. TheAlhambra has its origins in Irving's researches for his history A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada. He raveled to Granada, where he managed to obtain access to the Alhambra palace from the governor. He was inspired by his stay there to write this work, which combines description, myth, and narrations of historical events, all the way up to the penisular wars and the earthquake in 1821. The book was first published in 1832 in the United States and England. It was highly influential, and this later limited edition is a testament to its enduring popularity. Condition: In the original cloth. Externally very smart with just a little fading to the spine. The free endpapers are a little foxed. The text block is untrimmed, and therefore the edges are a little dusty. Otherwise clean and bright throughout, and generallyfirmly bound. Overall: FINE [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Eigenh. Postkarte mit U. München, 24. IV. 1896.

1896. 1 S. Qu.-8vo.

London, Twentieth Century Press, 1896. . Selten. - Die vorliegenden Arbeiten, die Walter Crane [1845-1915] zwischen Sommer 1885 bis 1896 zu verschiedenen Anlassen in sozialistischen Zeitschriften wie "The Justice", "Labour Leader" und "The Clarion" publiziert hatte, wurden anläßlich des " International Socialist Workers and Trade Union Congress" zusammengestellt und wiederabgedruckt.
