        L'Image. Revue littéraire et artistique

1896. L'IMAGE. L'Image. Twelve volumes in one. [4], 384 pp. Illustrated with 457 leaves of woodcuts and a specimen number. Folio, 345 x 255 mm, bound in a contemporary French floral cloth, black leather label, gilt title preserving the front and rear wrappers for each issue, and the wrappers for the entire year. Paris: Floury, 1896-1897. |~||~||~||~||~||~| A fine set of the deluxe edition of this important fin-de-siècle periodical on printed China paper. This is a key document in the revival of the production of illustrated books in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century. Auguste Lepère, among the most prolific artists providing illustrations for books at the time, was one of the directors of L'Image. It was he who was responsible for ensuring that the work of most of the prominent French artists of the period was featured in its pages; among them, Cheret, Denis, Grasset, Helleu, Laboureur, Mucha, Lucien Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec and Félix Vallotton. L'Image is not just important for its illustrations, but also for its text, with art criticism by Roger Marx, as well as literary contributions by Pierre Louys, André Mellerio, Charles Maurice, Jules Renard, Georges Rodenbach and Emile Verhaeren, among others. This is the deluxe version on superior paper, with the ilustrations hors texte, by far the most scarce and desirable of the published issues. One of 100 copies on chine with each engraving printed hors-texte. Carteret, IV, 213. Gordon Ray, French, II, 422.

München, 24. IV. 1896. - 1 S. Qu.-8vo.

The Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) were small format reproductions (pages measure 15.75 x 11.5 inches) of what were ostensibly the best and most famous posters from around Europe and America, as selected by the famous critic and poster supporter Roger Marx. They were printed by the Chaix publishing house as a concession to the growing craze of poster collecting at the end of the 19th-century. Every month between 1896-1900, while the Maîtres were being published, subscribers would receive four new plates. Each plate is a full color lithograph printed on high quality paper. The complete series consists of 256 images. The appeal of the Maîtres was, and remains, their small, easy-to-collect format. These are the complete first two volumes (of five) featuring plates 1 to 96.

Aux sanctuaires grecs. Paques 1912.

      - Large folio. Original printed wrappers (in colour on the front cover, both after watercolours by Mme. Brouardel); pp. 14, ff. 17-74 (plates with tissue guards), pp. 75-6, title printed in red an blue, with initial leaf with text in red and blue and two photos printed in photogravure, map, 446 snapshots printed in photogravure; apart from tiny marginal spot to title, a fine copy in the slightly worn original patterned box with cloth ties. Extremely rare sole edition (number 68 of 130 copies )of this luxuriously and privately printed photographic travelogue of a study trip on a ship around Greece, organized by the founder and director of the periodical Revue gà nà rale des Sciences, Louis Olivier. The first trip had taken place to celebrate the First Olympic Games of 1896. Most of the tourists where French Grecophiles or former pupils of the École française d'Athà nes, altogether a very cultured and educated group. The director of the journey and author of the text was Gustave Fourgà res (1863-1927), an archaeology profassor specialized in Ancient Greece. This copy was given to M. Poulenc, a member of the tour; we assume that the rarity, both commercially and institutionally (not in COPAC, both KVK and OCLC locate copies in Paris, Lausanne and Geneva) is due to the fact that each of the participants was sent a copy of this work to which several had contributed with their photographic skills. The photos in this impressive volume were not published anywhere else. See Haris Yiakoumis and Isabelle Roy, La croisià re des savants, 1896-1912. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Football

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1896. First. First edition. 425pp., line drawings. Early, neat owner name, page edges a little soiled, some soiling to the boards, a very good copy. An early book on football issued to help the development of the game. Camp was the Coach of the Yale football team and probably did more than anyone else to popularize the game and to shape the rules as they now stand including cutting the number of players to 11 (from 15), instituting the quarterback position, creating a scrimmage to institute play (rather than a "scrum") and designing the "gridiron" pattern of the field. Additionally, he was probably the first national figure to promote personal physical fitness, especially during the First World War. A lovely copy. .

Report on the Work of the Horn Scientific Expedition to Central Australia, Part II: Zoology: Reptilia and Amphibia (complete)

London: Dulau and Co., 1896. First edition.. Light age-toning to some text pages, color and black and white plates are bright and clean, the recent leather binding is very attractive; a tight and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. 112-175; 5 full page hand-colored plates, 3 plain plates. Later fine one-half brown morocco leather with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in two compartment on black and red morocco spine labels, tan decorated endpapers, sm 4to (10 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches). The Horn Scientific Expedition was the first primarily scientific expedition to study the natural history of Central Australia. It took place from May to August 1894, with expedition members first traveling by train from Adelaide to the railhead at Oodnadatta in South Australia, then using camels for transport to traverse over 3000 km of largely uncharted country from Oodnadatta through the Finke River basin to Alice Springs and the Macdonnell Ranges in what is now the Northern Territory. This volume presents the section on reptiles and amphibians collected on this expedition. The reptile section is by herpetologist Arthur H. Lucas, and the amphibian section was authored by Walter Baldwin Spencer, an English-Australian biologist. This important herpetological monograph is also bound with the Mammalia section by Baldwin Spencer (52 pages, 3 hand-colored plates, 1 plain plate) and the Crustacea section by Baldwin Spencer and T. S. Hall (22 pages, 4 plain plates). The reptile and amphibian section of the Horn Expedition is rarely offered as a separate work.

        Commentaries on American Law.

Boston, Little, Brwon, and Company, 1896.. Fourteenth Edition edited by John M. Gould. 4 Bde. 8vo.

        Towards Democracy

Manchester - Labour Press, 1896 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Towards Democracy was only Carpenter's fourth book of a lifetime of work onsocial injustices. Bound in cloth, with gilt lettering. Edward Carpenter (1844 1929) was an English socialist poet, anthologist, early gay activist and socialist philosopher. A leading figure in late 19th- and early 20th-century Britain, he was instrumental in the foundation of the Fabian Society and the Labour Party. Carpenter joined the Social Democratic Federation (SDF) in 1883 and attempted to form a branch in the city. In 1891, he met George Merrill, a working class man also from Sheffield, and the two men struck up a relationship. Merrill had been raised in the slums of Sheffield and had no formal education. Their relationship not only defied Victorian sexual mores but also the highly stratified British class system. In Love's Coming-of-Age he argued that a just and equal society must promote the sexual and economic freedom of women. He argued passionately that the source of war and discontent in western society was class-monopoly and social inequality. He termed this social injustice class-disease, where each class acts only in its own interests. To Carpenter's mind, a radical social and economic restructuring needed to take place in order to end social fragmentation. Condition: The binding is firm and tight. There ismild wear to the extremities, including mildbumping and some discolouration. Internally the pages are clean and bright with a couple of spots on the first and last couple of pages only. Over all the condition is very good..
