        Collected works. 1896-1929.

. Various places and publishers, 1896-1929. With 189 papers in ten volumes. Mostly 8vo, or small 4to. About 5,000 pp., 15 original manuscript letters and numerous illustrations. Near uniform contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Spines with gilt titles.l The collected works of Lodewijk 'Louis' Bolk (1866-1930), gathered by himself and custom-bound including hand-written annotations, and corrections by the author, as well as reactions (letters) from colleagues, bound or tipped in next to the original papers. Bolk was a Dutch anatomist and embryologist who created the fetalization theory about the human body. It states that when a human being is born, it is still a fetus, as is indicated by its (proportionally) big head, its uncoordinated motility or its absolute helplessness, for instance. Bolk's theory generally holds that man has evolved into a sexually mature fetal ape. In response to certain characteristics such as reduced pigmentation, the position of the foramen magnum, the jaw length, and our poorly developed body hair, Bolk concluded that the ape-like ancestor of humans may have delayed or halted much of its development during its evolution. Therefore, in comparison to the other great apes, the adult human shows many fetal characteristics. Bolk postulated that the cause at the base of this (lack of) development is hormonal, and that this trait is specifically human. The influential British evolutionary embryologist Gavin de Beer (1899-1972) and the famous American palaeontologist, Darwinist, and malacologist Stephen Jay Gould (1941-2002) wrote about him and further developed this theory, which is now usually known as neoteny, and widely regarded as scientifically correct. This set contains all Bolk's papers, with the possible exception of some published around the time or after his rather sudden death. Papers were published in Folio Neuro-Biologica, British Dental Journal, The American Journal of Anatomy, Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde, The Lancet, Journal of Anatomy, Anatomische Anzeiger, Petrus Camper, Morphologisches Jahrbuch, Nederlandsch Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde, Psychiatyrische en Neurologische Bladen, Bulletins et Memoires de la Societe d'Anthropologie de Paris, Verhandlungen der Anatomischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin, Verslagen van de gewone vergadering der Wis- en Natuurkundige Afdeeling, Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen, Archiv für mikroskopische Anatomie und Entwicklungsgeschichte, etc., etc. A library stamp in the beginning of each volume indicates that the set was part of the Koninklijke Academie van Wetenschappen, but was discarded, probably because the society's library already contained all the periodicals in which Bolk's work was published. The presence of handwritten and/or signed letters by the Scottish anatomist Arthur Keith, and Bolk's publisher, Gustav Fischer, are especially noteworthy. Apart from being a noted scientist, Bolk also was the founder of the Anatomical Laboratory of the University of Amsterdam. Later he became its Rector Magnificus. A research institute for international advice and research on sustainable agriculture, nutrition and health care is named after him. Bolk was a pioneer in establishing a relationship between nutrition, health, and height in humans. With the small, elegant bookplate of the author. Tiny hole in one spine cover, otherwise a fine, unique set. A collation (number of papers, and letters with authors and dates, per volume) is available upon request..

. Radierung, 1896, auf Velin. 32,7:38,5 cm. The Other House

London, William Heinemann. 1896, 1896. First Edition. Two Volumes. 8vo. Publisher's light blue cloth, light edgewear and scuffing, bumping to spine and some very light rubbing to extremities. Some darkening to the spine but essentially clean, strong and tight. Shows extremely well. Internally clean and fresh, front inner hinge cracked to gutter. Ink ownership to front pastedowns of both volumes. A very handsome set, printed in a run of only 600 copies, scarce by any account and especially so in this condition. Even more interesting is the fact that this copy is inscribed by James to the half title of volume 1 to a 'Mrs. Hill' in the year of publication. Mrs. Hill in this case was Jane Dalzell Finlay; daughter of the owner of the Northern Whig newspaper and the wife of the editor [Frank Harrison Hill] of the London Daily News. A journalist and prolific correspondant of such arts luminaries as Henry Irving for example Mrs Hill was in addition a literary critic for the Daily News and The Saturday Review. She made the acquaintance of Henry James in 1877 having just composed a review of his 'Daisy Miller', saving her most severe approbation for 'An Internatonal Episode'. Interestingly James wrote a long and detailed letter to Mrs. Hill defending his creation and responding to various points presented in her review. This letter (found in Henry James: A Life in Letters) remains the only letter from James responding to a critic. James and Mrs. Hill continued to correspond and indeed became friends. A few other examples of James' work inscribed to Mrs. Hill exist amongst the darkened stacks of the rare book world, but this is a particularly handsome and scarce example.

Ritual, myth, and customs of the Australian Aborigines. A short study in comparative ethnology

Maitland: 'Mercury' Office, 1896. Duodecimo, 84 pp, original printed wrappers; some foxing, wrappers a little chipped and creased, good copy. The Bora Bora ceremony. Uncommon Maitland printing, describing the Bora Bora and other Aboriginal ceremonies of the Hunter Valley tribes. The author declares his belief that the Aboriginal tribes of the East Coast will be much reduced by white settlement, hence the importance of recording indigenous beliefs and ceremonies. Curiously, he maintains that many of the mysteries of the ancient Near East and classical Greece may be illuminated by the study of Aboriginal ceremonies and legends. This short book describes in some detail the Bora Bora, coroborees, the mythology of the night sky, curses and dark magic, and the sanctity of fire.

        JUDE THE OBSCURE

1896 - [a fine copy] With an Etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a Map of Wessex. (London:) James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., (1896). Original dark green-blue cloth with monogram device in gilt. First Edition of Hardy's last great novel, issued as Vol. VIII of "The Wessex Novels." After JUDE (and due in part to the outcry over it), Hardy was to spend his remaining 30+ years writing poetry.~In this copy the last pages of chapters are numbered in signatures A, C, D, E, F, G & H. In signatures I through 2K of all copies, such pages are unnumbered, but in signatures A through H such pages appear both numbered and unnumbered -- often mixed within a copy, as here; it is uncertain why signatures A through H appear both ways (perhaps two printers were involved?), but in any event it is doubtful that either "state" got into the public's hands earlier than the other.~This is quite simply a fine, bright copy -- it would be hard to find a better copy. Purdy pp 86-91. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Elementi di scienza politica. (Presentation copy, inscribed by Mosca to Benedetto Croce.)

Rome: Bocca, 1896. - FIRST EDITION. Contemporary ¾-cloth and marbled boards. Very Good. Inscribed by Mosca to Benedetto Croce, an exceptional association copy. First edition, very rare, of Gaetano Mosca's The Ruling Class, the most important work of political science published by one of the three exponents of the classical elite theory. Extremely rare: two copies in the US (NYPL, University of Wisconsin), none in COPAC. 'Mosca (1858-1941) was a 'jurist and political theorist who, by applying a historical method to political ideas and institutions, elaborated the concept of a ruling minority (classe politica) present in all societies. . . . His work, along with that of Vilfredo Pareto and Robert Michels, inspired subsequent studies by political scientists of the process of the 'circulation of elites' within democracies and other political systems' (Britannica). 'Croce developed Mosca's notion of the 'political class', elaborating his ideas in a review of the second edition [of Elementi di scienza politica], which served as a preface to subsequent reprintings of the work. Its members did not, he argued, serve their particular class interest, but aimed at serving the ideal interests of humanity as a whole. As a result, they rarely came from amongst the ruling group, but were drawn, as Mosca claimed, from the middle rank of any given society, which were always in a relatively independent position. Croce held that members of the 'political class' promoted the development of history by virtue of serving Spirit via the ideal moments of the Beautiful, the True, etc. Their membership changed with the circulation of ideals rather than of interests. He hoped that by removing Mosca's theory from its positivist framework, he could prevent the identification of the political class with the bourgeoisie of the nineteenth century, thereby avoiding the anachronism which bedevilled any practical application of his compatriot's ideas. Like Mosca, he turned to the history and analysis of contemporary political institutions to prove his case - that the liberal ideal had primacy over the democratic. Only by infusing the masses with the spirit of the former, he contended, could the two be reconciled' (Richard Paul Bellamy, Modern Italian Social Theory: Ideology and Politics from Pareto to the Present, Stanford University Press, 1987, pp. 90-91). 'Another vindication of liberalism and Risorgimental patriotism can be found in a 1923 review of a new edition of Gaetano Mosca's famous book, Elements of Political Science. There, Croce claimed that, despite the recent experiments, in Italy or elsewhere, 'the liberal state was still the most mature form of European political life,' and 'its inspiring principle was sound.' But he also argued that the ruling classes of the liberal states had to become 'more confident and more courageous'; above all, they needed to acquire a more robust faith. Croce agreed with Mosca that, to maintain political cohesion in the life of a nation, a religious faith was required, and that in modern times, after the decline of traditional religion, only patriotism offered a new civic faith and was able to generate that cohesion. Croce hastened to add, however, repeating concepts that he had used against the nationalists before the war, 'provided that patriotism is understood in an ethical way, and not in a chauvinistic, ethnical, brutal, libidinous and capricious manner, as is common among the different nationalisms.' 'Understood in an ethical manner,' he continued, 'patriotism is the concrete and historical form of the moral idea, the only one now possible, and around which it is given to unite all efforts, which ennoble human life.' For Croce, it was this kind of patriotism that in the nineteenth century made it possible for a Neapolitan to become an Italian, and that in the future could make it possible for an Italian to become a European' (Fabio Fernando Rizi, Benedetto Croce and Italian Fascism, University of Toronto Press, 2003, p. 61).         Mistura Curiosa

Edinburgh. Maclachlan and Stewart. 1896, 1896. First edition. 4to. Bound in publisher's dark green cloth covered bevelled boards, titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. Light edgewear, some slight frayiong to head of spine; bright, clean and handsome. All edges gilt. Internally clean. A bizarre and unusual collection of verses, riddles, songs and fables, some of which it has to be said are markedly racist by today's standards (if not actually intended to be at the time because apparently being a weapons-grade muppet to people who weren't exactly like you in every respect was just good, clean fun), but which were probably the height of comic subtlety in 1896, which leads me to believe I'd sooner chew my own leg off than attend a recital of such gibberish. Subjects other than the fact that black people were vastly amusing to late Victorians covered by this volume include comic Scottish verses, rhymes about golf (the only redeeming feature of said pastime being that the practitioners of it are frequently struck by lightning), curling and the unforgiving and somewhat provocative behaviour of Sweet Nell the Grocer's Daughter. Illustrated throughout with varying degrees of artistic beauty and horrifying crassness by Charles Altamont Doyle. This is a most curious item and in fact criticism of it (not that I'll stop, obviously) is like someone one hundred years in the future finding a Viz annual and a Conservative Party internal memo and deciding therefore that we were all sexually perverse bigoted stereotypes with the charm and appeal of a really bad escalator accident; what they'll think when they get round to reading the Viz annual is anybody's guess. A snapshot of an era, albeit one of those snapshots you wouldn't run back inside a burning building to retrieve.

        Views in Chitral

London: Maclure & Co.,, 1896. Taken during the Advance of the 3rd Brigade of the Chitral Relief Force under the Command of Brigadier-General W. F. Gatacre. Landscape quarto. Original red embossed cloth, title gilt to the upper board. 127 photogravure plates, 4 of them folding. A little rubbed and spotted, particularly at the spine, front hinge cracked as often, and a couple of plates sprung, but overall very good. First and only edition, uncommon, only 4 copies on Copac, OCLC adds just 5 further locations. Fine visual record of the 1895 expedition to relieve the siege of Chitral, an incident of the Great Game that became a considerable cause célèbre. The Russians were seen to be making solid advances in the region, advancing across the Khanates of Central Asia, a railway line following in their tracks, and "had begun to show an alarming interest in that lofty no-man's-land where the Hindu Kush, Pamirs, Karakorams and Himalayas converged, and where three great empires—those of Britain, Russia and China—met. Russian military surveyors and explorers … were probing further and further into the still largely unmapped regions around the upper Oxus, and even into Northern Tibet … To British officers stationed on the frontier, and their masters in Calcutta, it looked as though the long feared Russian penetration of the passes had now begun" (Hopkirk The Great Game, p.449). The independent monarchy of Chitral was seen as a possible route for the Russians into British India, so when the death in 1892 of the long-time ruler Aman-ul-Mulk II, in the absence of any law of succession, threw the state into chaos, it was felt necessary to intervene to ensure the stability of the region. In an attempt to establish a secure base for operations, on arrival from Gilgit the political agent, Surgeon Major George Robertson, occupied the local fort, and found himself bottled up there; "The vision of a handful of British officers, with their loyal native troops, holding out against overwhelming odds in a remote and picturesque fortress, brought to mind the recent tragedy in the Sudan. "It is Khartoum all over again," declared the Graphic. Those with slightly longer memories remembered Burnes, Macnaghten, Cavagnari, Connolly, Stoddart and other victims of oriental treachery beyond India's frontiers" ( p.492). Develin's pictorial journal follows the progress of the 3rd Brigade of Major-General Sir Robert Low's relief force from their entry into the Malakand Pass to arrival at Chitral, and includes numerous excellent landscapes, together with group portraits of British and native troops, and of local dignitaries. In the end the 15,000 strong army was pre-empted by a somewhat rag-tag force - 400 Sikh Pioneers, 40 Kashmiri sappers with a pair of mountain guns, and 900 Hunza irregulars - cobbled together by Col. James Kelly at Gilgit which relieved the garrison almost a month before the main force arrived. An attractively-produced and sought-after record.
