Stanford White discusses the Plaza entrance to Prospect Park with MacMonnies

New York, New York, January 21, 1895. 8" x 10.5". "One typed page on stationary stock addressed to Frederick William MacMonnies, on the firm's letterhead of ""McKim, Mead & White"". Dated January 21, 1895, and signed by Stanford White as ""McKim, Mead White"". 8"" x 10.5"". Expected folds, faint handling marks, ink scribble to front lower left, outside of margin, and small ink marks verso.Stanford White types a letter to MacMonnies, who at the time was the best known expatriate American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts school, about an error made in the design and construction of the Prospect Park pillars which ""were not built according to the drawing which Park Commissioner Squier sent you. The plinths upon which your bronze eagles are to rest are somewhat larger than were shown on the first drawing"" White was referring to the pillars that are still present today at the entrance to the park, which although first built in 1894, were revised and not fully completed with the eagles added until 1902. Somewhat of a scolding, chastising letter as White signs the letter as ""McKim, Mead White"", instead of his more typical ""Affectionately Stanford White"", and also refers to him very formally as ""Dear Sir"", instead of ""Dear Mac"" or 'My Dear Mac"". More than a century later, the pillars are still considered a noteworthy landmark, admired for their grandiose uniqueness, an image of them as they appear today is below."

Royal Society, London 1895 - FIRST EDITION OF SIR WILLIAM RAMSAY'S DISCOVERY OF HELIUM AS WELL AS LOCKYER'S VERIFICATION OF RAMSAY'S DISCOVERY. In March of 1895, "Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay isolated helium on Earth by treating the mineral cleveite (a variety of uraninite with at least 10% rare earth elements) with mineral acids. Ramsay was looking for argon but, after separating nitrogen and oxygen from the gas liberated by sulfuric acid, he noticed a bright yellow line that matched the D3 line observed in the spectrum of the Sun" (Mulijadi, Helium, 3). Ramsay's two papers outlining his discovery of helium appear in this volume. At the time of Ramsay's discovery, however, helium was thought to be an element that might exist on the sun although it was not thought to be present on Earth. For this reason, spectroscopists at the time doubted Ramsay's results concerning helium. In order to address this, Ramsay sent samples of his discovery to J. Norman Lockyer. These samples were identified as helium by Lockyer. This volume contains all five parts of Lockyer's work affirming Ramsay's discovery. ALSO INCLUDED: J. J.         The Lark.

William Doxey, 1895. Complete run (nos. 1 through 24) of this trend-setting "little magazine," bound in the publisher's handsome cloth bindings, including the Epilark issue, and => retaining all original wrappers. Issue 1 contains the famous "Purple Cow" poem with Burgess's illustration, here in the second issue. Received wisdom (i.e., no one knows from whom) is that the print run of the first issue was between 15 and 24 copies, only! The Lark was put out by "Les Jeunes," a fin de siècle clique of San Francisco aesthetes whose miscellany contained creative writing and interesting graphics in a variety of styles. Text and illustrations were printed on Asian paper; a few issues were printed in green, brown, or dark blue; and from issue 9 to the end, printing was on one side of a leaf only. Issues 1 and 2 have the=> laid-in photographs and 22 includes the separate leaflet supplement, "Vals de Monterey [sic] Viejo." The first number, as noted, is the second issue, with Doxey's imprint; the second contains "relics" of R.L. Stevenson. Binding: Publisher's muslin bindings designed by Florence Lundborg, with her monogram on vol. I; covers illustrated and printed in color, each volume with a different cover image.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1895 - 1895 Wisden Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special.

1895. This is a very special 1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for.

Autograph Letter Signed Twice to British author an film producer, R. J. Minney (1895-1979)on printed address stationery, 4to, London, March 3, 1942

Wells writes a philosophical letter to the editor of "The Strand Magazine," R. J. Minney (1895-1979) who was also an author and film producer. Minney was the editor of "The Strand Magazine" from 1941-42, after working at other magazines which published Wells' works. By the time Wells writes this letter to Minney, they had established a long working relationship. At the beginning of the letter, Wells answers Minney's request for a "tiny contribution" for which he has been paid 10 pounds. He, rather sarcastically suggests that he is giving Minney "The gist of a life's experience for" 10 pounds. The first section of the letter is bracketed "Private & Personal." Here Wells writes, "My dear Minney, 'Tiny Contribution' indeed. The gist of a life's experience for £10! I like your check. It will take me hours to compose the brief message below…." He signs for the first time, "Yours H. G. Wells." What follows can be described as that "gist of a life's experience." Whether this was intended for inclusion in an article for "The Strand Magazine," it is difficult to say. It does not appear to have been published. Wells writes as if he is proofreading his own work as well, with a cross-out correction and periods circled. In his fine hand he writes, "For the future life of the species see my 'outlook for Homo Sapiens'...," recently published in 1942 when this letter was written. He inserts and arrow from the words above to insert "lower case" fonts. He continues, "but if you mean the conscious individual life I see nothing worth carrying over and no means of carrying it over. Conscious life is dependent on a supply of aerated blood to the brain. When that stops we stop. When it weakens or is interrupted we sleep or faint. Yet those whom we have known & loved & who have died may live on in us more powerfully than when they were alive I have done things & not done things in the past year because of the silent influence of X who died fifteen years ago. But we defile & destroy such precious memories [here he is referring to his second wife, Amy Catherine Robbins, whom he called Jane and who had died in 1927] altogether if we finish the foul intervention of Sludge this Medium or if we talk too freely [here Wells has crossed out two words, first "freely" which appear to be misspelled, then above that "Falsely", then below rewrites "freely" ] and make an egotistical parade of our loss." He signs a second time, "H. G. Wells," adding a paraph connected to the "s" Around the same time as this letter, Wells was likely working on the last few articles and essays he published, all dealing in some way with the concept articulated here. Wells published a series of essays "'42 to 44: A Contemporary Memoir," which also included a thesis he submitted in 1942 to the University of London for the Doctorate of Science. The thesis was on the "Quality of Illusion in the Continuity of the Individual…." In all of these final writings, Wells presents himself as more of a scientist than an artist, not as much a novelist as a thinker. In "The Happy Turning," which was published in 1945, he says, "The human mind may be in a phase of transition to a new, fearless, clear-headed way of living in which understanding will be the supreme interest in life, and beauty a mere smile of approval… in a universe completely conscious of itself, Being achieves its end. Wells was remarkable for his foresight and imagination in such famous works as "The Time Machine" and "The Invisible Man." Wells was deeply concerned about society's future, an interest that led him to seek answers from such political groups as the Fabian Society.

The Blue Jackets, or Her Majesty's Service. A Farce, in One Act.

London: B. Pollock,, [1895?] . Text duodecimo (168 × 108 mm), together with plates landscape octavo (219 × 173 mm). Both stitched as issued. 9 hand-coloured plates as called for; "4 Plates Characters, 3 Pl. Scenes, 2 Pl. Wings, No. 5 & 8." Plates a little browned, and with very slight marginal chipping, but overall very good indeed. An extremely unusual complete copy of one of Pollock's adaptations for the juvenile drama, or toy theatre. Stirling's play was originally produced around 1835. Stirling himself is probably best known as the first theatrical adapter of Dickens, and as acting and stage manager of the Adelphi. The putative date is drawn from the cataloguing of Ohio State University's microfilmed copy of that at the V&A on OCLC, which shows just two copies of the original, Brown and Huntington. No copies on Copac.
