        CAPTAIN ANTIFER [complete serialization in THE BOY'S OWN PAPER];

      1895. or, His Excellency's Millions. A Story of Buried Treasure. [London:] The Boy's Own Paper, No. 841 (February 23, 1895) through No. 872 (September 28, 1895). [In all, 32 consecutive weekly issues.] Original pictorial self-wrappers. Serial Appearance of this tale of buried treasure by Verne, with Roux illustrations taken from the original French edition; the latitude of the treasure is known, but not the longitude... MIRIFIQUES AVENTURES DE MAITRE ANTIFER was originally published in Paris in 1894, after which this serialization began, as the first appearance in the English language. But in June, when this serialization was only half-complete, the New York publisher R.F. Fenno came out with a cheap paperback edition of the entire novel. In November (after the tale was complete in Boy's Own), both Fenno in New York and Sampson Low in London came out with hardbound, illustrated editions.~Of these 32 wrappered issues, the first 29 are in close-to-fine condition (minor edge-wear, one with a closed tear in the front cover); the final three have some "nibbling away" of the fore-edge (two to six inches in length, but only in the margin not affecting print).         MOVEMENT

      New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. First American edition. 8vo., xv, 323 pp., 200 b&w illustrations, adverts. Publisher's red cloth, embossed with titling and design element on both boards in black ink, and on the spine in black and gold. There is very light fading, and one tiny spot of wear on the spine; else a fine, near new copy. Translated from the French by Eric Pritchard, this title is one of the most famous works of Marey, and the culmination of 30 years of research into the scientific applications of motion-analysis. He further developed animated photography into a separate field of chronophotography, with his revolutionary idea to record several phases of movement on one photographic surface. His research on how to capture and display moving images had a profound influence upon Thomas Edison and Luis Lumière in the emerging field of cinematography. It is not without merit that this work is often credited as the first book on cinematography. See: Mannoni, Laurent, WHO's WHO OF VICTORIAN CINEMA. Many of the illustrations in this work are from photographs. Garrison and Morton No. 643. Roosens and Salu No. 6833.

        Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, 1895-1900.

      KLEURRIJK BEELD VAN DE BELLE ?POQUEAffiches uit de Belle ?poque op klein formaat. Uit Les Ma?tres de l'Affiche: publication mensuelle contenant la reproduction des plus belles affiches illustr?es des grands artistes, fran?ais et ?trangers. Lithografie?n in kleur vervaardigd tussen 1895-1900.Rond het jaar 1890 waren gelithografeerde affiches op groot formaat een opkomend fenomeen en h?t nieuwe medium om ophanden zijnde voorstellingen in het theater, het circus, dansvoorstellingen en het vari?t? onder de aandacht van het publiek te brengen. Ze werden door schilders en kunstenaars, die zich tot dan ook lieten verleiden tot zeer uiteenlopende ontwerpen, met veel enthousiasme als een nieuwe kunstuiting omarmd. Deze affiches vormen ook vandaag de dag nog ons beeld van de Belle ?poque.De bakermat voor deze nieuwe rage lag zonder twijfel in Parijs, waar Jules Ch?ret zich als de ware meester van deze nieuwe kunst ontpopte, zowel zijn ontwerpen als de gebruikte techniek waren g?nial.Op de wereldtentoonstelling van 1889 werd Jules Ch?ret ge?erd met een eigen tentoonstelling waarbij hij voor zijn oeuvre tot dan toe een gouden medaille ontving. Deze tentoonstelling was voor het grote publiek tevens een eerste kennismaking met het fenomeen affiche. Hierna volgde een succes dat zijn weerga niet kende. Op speciaal daarvoor opgerichte zuilen en andere oppervlakten die zich er voor leenden, werden de vaak immens grote affiches geplakt. Deze nieuwe straatkunst bracht ook een enorme verzamelwoede op gang. De populariteit van deze ?fresco?s van het trottoir?, zoals het affiche bewonderend werd genoemd, gold echter niet alleen voor de aankondigingen van de diverse culturele manifestaties. Het medium werd ook gezien als een interessante vorm van betaalbare kunst voor het grote publiek en gaf bovendien de kunsthandel een nieuwe impuls.Inspelend op dit grote succes, ontstond in 1895 op initiatief van Jules Ch?ret in samenwerking met Impremerie Chaix de serie publicaties van ?Les Ma?tres de l?Affiche?. Men kon zich abonneren op deze serie, op klein formaat los in mappen uitgegeven affiches, driemaandelijks van december 1895 tot november 1900 uitkwam. In een oplage van vier stuks per maand zijn er in de vijf jaar van het bestaan 240 affiches uitgegeven. Bovendien werden speciaal voor abonnees van Les Ma?tres door verschillende kunstenaars speciale affiches ontworpen zonder aankondiging of reclameopdruk.Het papier waarop ze gedrukt werden was van zeer hoge kwaliteit. Dit in tegenstelling tot de reguliere grote affiches, die op een mindere kwaliteit papier werden gedrukt, maar dan ook een ander doel dienden. De mooie heldere afbeeldingen van Les Ma?tres de l?Affiche geven een interessant beeld van wat er zich op het gebied van het culturele leven, gezien door de ogen van diverse bekende kunstenaars, aan het einde van de 19de-eeuw afspeelde.Prijs: ?575,- (per stuk incl. lijst).

        THE ROSE AND THE KEY

      [London]: Downey & Co., n.d. [1895].. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1] 2-432, original decorated dark green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel. First one-volume edition. First published as a 36-part serial in ALL THE YEAR ROUND, 21 January 1871 to 23 September 1871, and first published as a book by Chapman and Hall in 1871. "One of the most interesting of Le Fanu's novels, THE ROSE AND THE KEY concerns Maud Vernon, whose mother commits her to an asylum when Maud is not mentally ill. A study of human avarice and terror, Maud becomes the victim of an alienist, Dr. Antomarchi ... The characterization of Dr. Antomarchi and the realistic and believable study of the asylum give a particular horror to the novel. Le Fanu may have been influenced by Wilkie Collin's THE WOMAN IN WHITE. However, Le Fanu creates his own genuine study of human weakness and cruelty." - Gary William Crawford. "There is much in the novel that recalls Charles Reade's treatment of a somewhat similar theme in HARD CASH, and it is hardly necessary to say that the most stirring episodes concern the awful experiences of Maud Vernon at Glarewoods ... Like a surgeon who discovers a curious beauty in some physical abnormality he is called upon to remove, Le Fanu seizes on these scenes of horror and no matter how his story may have dragged in the preceding chapters he warms to the occasion with a renewed zest. Every nerve must be thrilled, each harrowing circumstance must be related, and the episode is presented to the excited reader with a kind of cold frenzy." - Nelson Browne. Early private owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. A hint of rubbing to cloth at spine ends and corner tips, mild bumps to upper corner tips, a bright, very good or better copy. Very scarce in this condition. (#156343)

        THE SECRET OF THE COURT: A ROMANCE OF LIFE AND DEATH

      London: Hutchinson & Co., 1895.. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-277 [278-280: ads], illustrated title leaf is an insert, four inserted plates and numerous other illustrations in the text by G. H. Edwards, original pictorial dark blue-gray cloth, front panel stamped in black, red, light blue and gold, spine panel stamped in red and gold, top edge untrimmed. First edition. Weird novel about the remnant of an ancient advanced civilization hidden in an enormous complex beneath the Egyptian sands populated by adepts and zombies of old Pharaohs in suspended animation who awake from time to time. Sefton, a British scientist, is exploring the complex, reading the hieroglyphs in an attempt to reconstruct the ancient lore, including the process by which the dead are restored to life. He attempts to revive the dead wife of his friend's brother, but the experiment fails; the body is animated but is not united with her soul. "Quite a readable specimen of Victorian science fantasy." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 160. "... belongs to the class of story that never seems to go out of fashion, but of which Bulwer was the completest master. ... The description of the temple, by-the-bye, is striking, and the weird effect it produces is brought about by no cheap devices." - The Bookman, vol. 2, p. 229. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1542. Bleiler (1978), p. 142. Reginald 10323. Early owner's signature dated January 1896 in ink on front free endpaper. Touch of rubbing to spine ends and corner tips, endpapers (printed on pulp paper stock) a bit age-darkened, a bright, tight, nearly fine copy. A nice copy of a uncommon book seldom found in decent condition. (#147698)

Original mid-brown printed wrappers lettered in black on the front, head and tail of the spine chipped; two leaves have a heavy crease across the outside top corner. Half-title present. A VG+ copy. Published after Wilde's trial, during which Wilde's works were used as evidence of his 'immorality', Apologia Pro Oscar Wilde sets out to defend Wilde and his writing by argueing that a work of fiction is not perforce a work of autobiography: "Any writer is allowed to write or speak of morality without taking any notice of art or beauty of any kind, and yet it is not always assumed that a preacher is necessarily incapable of enjoying a piece of music or a picture; but if a man writes or speaks about beauty only, and does not preach ethics also, it is assumed by many not only that he does not interest himself at all in morals but that he positively denies their existence".

        BLAKE OF THE "RATTLESNAKE" OR THE MAN WHO SAVED ENGLAND: A STORY OF TORPEDO WARFARE IN 189- ..

      London: Tower Publishing Company Limited, 1895.. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5 [6] 7-269 [270: blank] [271-272: ads], sixteen inserted plates and other illustrations and diagrams in the text by Jane, original pictorial gray-green cloth, front panel stamped in red and black, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. A presentation copy with inscription by Jane on the front free endpaper: "To Philip Latey / with Fred T. Jane's / compliments. / Oct. 1895." The first of Jane's four scientific romances. An account of future sea warfare by a naval authority and future compiler of yearly catalogues of ships and aircraft. "War against France and Russia in torpedo-carrying ships, with love melodrama around hero. He dies saving England, after her fleet has been destroyed because of coal miners' strike. Bloody-minded anti civilian militarism." - Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 61. "I would say one final word to those who object to these 'future war yarns,' on the grounds that they are likely to set other nations, at present friendly to us, by the ears. Foreign writers are frequently turning out similar stories, describing the utter destruction of the British Navy by their own; yet I never heard of any of us bearing them ill-will for it. May our Warfare of the Future long be confined to the pages of books; as, indeed, it will be, so long as foreign nations know that we are ready to tackle the lot of them if need be." - (from the author's "preface") The author's illustrations are quite interesting from an artistic point of view and, especially in the scenes of nocturnal combat, have an impressionistic quality, a touch of Turner. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1171. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 443. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 21. Clarke, Voices Prophesying War: Future Wars 1763-3749 (1992), p. 77 and p. 230. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 122. Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 130. Bleiler (1978), p. 109. Reginald 07833. Cloth lightly worn at spine ends and corner tips, tiny spot at bottom edge of front cover, free endpapers and page edges a bit darkened, a bright, tight, very good copy. A nice copy of an attractive book rarely found in superior condition. (#156840)
