Young Pennsylvania woman's travel journal-scrapbook documenting her tour of Europe

Europe, 1895. Canvas. Very good. This leather-trimmed, canvas-covered journal measures approximately 6' X 7" and contains approximately 130 pages of text, tickets, clippings, photographs, letterheads, pressed flowers, and other ephemera. All of the ephemera is attached, some pasted down and some tipped in. Sound binding with clean pages. Some minor wear and soiling to the cover. The written text is clear and bold. Some of the ephemera has folds, creases, and edge wear. McKnight was a single, 28-year old young woman from a prominent Pittsburgh family, the daughter of Charles McKnight, an author and newspaper owner. McKnight's journal begins on 23 March 1895 in Rome and concludes with a letter home written in Paris on 2 July. In between are detailed accounts of her travel though Italy, the Vatican, France, Switzerland, Germany, Gibraltar, and Spain including descriptions of countryside, cathedrals, museums, cities, events, hotels and people she visited along the way. There are approximately 80 small (1.25" x 1.5" to 2.25" x 3.75") photographs and/or photographic reproductions interspersed throughout to illustrate her daily writing, along with illustrated hotel letterheads, a complimentary ticket to visit the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the calling card of the U. S. Ambassador to Italy, assorted tickets and programs, a multi-page "Cook's Special Ticket" for Madrid and Seville, a colorful passenger list for voyage on the Norddeutscher Lloyd ship Kaiser Wilhelm II from Genoa to Gibraltar, a pair of visa-like tickets permitting McKnight to stay in Gibraltar, an elaborate Wagon-Lits ticket from Seville to Madrid, a colorful bullfight ticket, pressed flowers, a pair of color illustrations showing a train compartment set up for morning and night, etc. A very nice illustrated record of an independent young woman's three-month travel adventure in Europe.

British Political Pamphlets: National Union, National Democratic Labour Front, Liberal, Labour, others.

Various publishers 1895 - ++180 British Political Leaflets, 1895-1945++ 180 Scarce Examples of Political Ephemera Offering a collection of 180 scarce political leaflets—about half of which are single-page, single-sheet handouts. Included are: National Union and Conservative Central Office leaflets, 1895: 41. Coalition Candidate National Unionist, 1918: 57. National Democratic Labour Party, 1921: 6. British Labour/Unionist, 1923: 19. Fight the Famine, 1919-1923: 6. National Declaration (regarding League of Nations), 1935: 7. Liberal, 1945: 10. Labour, 1945: 3. Conservative, 1945: 37. I would say that 1/3 of these are somewhat brittle, especially those from before the turn of the century. On the other hand, most of these are very difficult to find, given their ephemeral nature.

Nashville: Haley & Florida, 1895. 1st ed. Hardcover. Very Good. frontis, photos, ills, xiv, 640p. Cloth. 25cm. Original floral endpapers. In addition to this impressive work, Haley wrote and published another "race" book ("Sparkling Gems of Race Knowledge Worth Reading") in 1897 and a religious work ("From Darkness into Light; or, Bible Mysteries Unfolded") in 1911. The latter work appears to argue that death rather than eternal damnation is the penalty for sin. A helpful librarian at the Nashville Public Library advised us that neither Haley nor co-publisher Florida are identified with a "(c)" in the Nashville city directories of the period -- an identification used to indicate that the listed person was "colored."         A collection of Twenty-five Original Gelatin Silver Photographs. About 1895.

1895 1895 - Twenty-five photographs with images of Rangoon and Mandalay, while the last two are of Penang Island and the Bridge of Penta Kõta. Each photo measures about 15 x 23 cm, four are slightly smaller. The photographs are pasted on grey thick paper (27 x 35 cm) with manuscript caption labels in French. A few of the photographs with minor silvering of the photo margins, the paper mounts have some mild traces of moisture exposure but overall the condition is very good. This is an interesting documentation of British Burma at the turn of the 20th century. (Burma was under British rule between 1886 and 1948). Fifteen of the photos are devoted to Rangoon and its vicinity; of the harbour, street scenes, elephant at work, several of the Shuedagon pagoda, of the Sule pagoda and a few of the countryside. Eight of the photos are taken in Mandalay: city views, the market, Shewenandaw Monastery and the Palace. The Mandalay Palace, built in 1857-9, was the primary royal residence of the last two kings of the country (King Mindon and King Thibaw) up until the Third Burmese War and the annexation by the British Empire. During World War II most of the palace compound was destroyed. The Shewenandaw Monastery is the single remaining major original structure of the original Royal Palace today.

Edges somewhat browned. All of these prints are very rare; a different print commanded £21,250 at Sotheby's in 2012.

Stanford White discusses the Plaza entrance to Prospect Park with MacMonnies

New York, New York, January 21, 1895. 8" x 10.5". "One typed page on stationary stock addressed to Frederick William MacMonnies, on the firm's letterhead of ""McKim, Mead & White"". Dated January 21, 1895, and signed by Stanford White as ""McKim, Mead White"". 8"" x 10.5"". Expected folds, faint handling marks, ink scribble to front lower left, outside of margin, and small ink marks verso.Stanford White types a letter to MacMonnies, who at the time was the best known expatriate American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts school, about an error made in the design and construction of the Prospect Park pillars which ""were not built according to the drawing which Park Commissioner Squier sent you. The plinths upon which your bronze eagles are to rest are somewhat larger than were shown on the first drawing"" White was referring to the pillars that are still present today at the entrance to the park, which although first built in 1894, were revised and not fully completed with the eagles added until 1902. Somewhat of a scolding, chastising letter as White signs the letter as ""McKim, Mead White"", instead of his more typical ""Affectionately Stanford White"", and also refers to him very formally as ""Dear Sir"", instead of ""Dear Mac"" or 'My Dear Mac"". More than a century later, the pillars are still considered a noteworthy landmark, admired for their grandiose uniqueness, an image of them as they appear today is below."

Royal Society, London 1895 - FIRST EDITION OF SIR WILLIAM RAMSAY'S DISCOVERY OF HELIUM AS WELL AS LOCKYER'S VERIFICATION OF RAMSAY'S DISCOVERY. In March of 1895, "Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay isolated helium on Earth by treating the mineral cleveite (a variety of uraninite with at least 10% rare earth elements) with mineral acids. Ramsay was looking for argon but, after separating nitrogen and oxygen from the gas liberated by sulfuric acid, he noticed a bright yellow line that matched the D3 line observed in the spectrum of the Sun" (Mulijadi, Helium, 3). Ramsay's two papers outlining his discovery of helium appear in this volume. At the time of Ramsay's discovery, however, helium was thought to be an element that might exist on the sun although it was not thought to be present on Earth. For this reason, spectroscopists at the time doubted Ramsay's results concerning helium. In order to address this, Ramsay sent samples of his discovery to J. Norman Lockyer. These samples were identified as helium by Lockyer. This volume contains all five parts of Lockyer's work affirming Ramsay's discovery. ALSO INCLUDED: J. J. Thomson's "On the Electrolysis of Gases" (pp. 244-257) a paper of significance in his study of the connection between electrification and chemical action.
