With extensive performance notes, cues, marks, and cuts in various pencils and inks in Vanzo's hand throughout. Handstamps of Vanzo to margins of several pages. Some browning and soiling, especially to margins; blank margins of many leaves frayed, with small tears, perforations or slight loss, slightly affecting four measures of music; occasional staining; some leaves (indicating cuts) folded and glued down; several leaves fully or partially detached. The stage copy for the Milan premiere at the Teatro alla Scala on December 26, 1899, which Vanzo conducted. Götterdämmerung is the fourth opera in the Ring cycle. Excerpts were first performed in a concert at the Musikverein in Vienna on March 25, 1875; the entire work was first performed as part of the Ring cycle at Bayreuth on August 17, 1876. "The final opera of the Ring... provides an appropriately weighty conclusion to the epic cycle. 26 years elapsed from the time Wagner made his first prose draft for the work (then called Siegfrieds Tod) to the completion of the full score, with inevitable consequences in terms of stylistic unity. Retrogressive elements of grand opera exist side by side with motivic integration representative of Wagner's most mature style. And yet, the stylistic integrity of Götterdämmerung is scarcely compromised, so skilfully are the disparate elements welded together and so intense the dramaturgical conviction. The resources and stamina demanded by the work (from both singers and orchestra), combined with its sheer length and theatrical potency, make it one of the most daunting yet rewarding undertakings in the operatic repertory." Grove Music Online. Vanzo "conducted Wagner's works in Italy, giving the Italian première of Die Walküre (Turin, 1891) and the Milan première of Götterdämmerung (1896). He conducted Italian works in Moscow (1897) and in 1900 visited Buenos Aires. He retired in 1906. As a pianist he gained a fine reputation (Grieg compared him favourably with Liszt and Rubinstein). He undertook many concert tours, often accompanying his wife, the singer Anna Kribel, with whom he opened a singing school in Milan. His opera Edipo re was composed in 1893 but not performed; his two other operas, Fosca and Pamela, were not completed. His one-act operetta Lubino (Milan, Pezzana, 1887) was performed under the pseudonym Canard. Several songs, piano pieces, chamber music, small-scale choral works and a symphony are in the Milan Conservatory library (I-Mc). He also composed a requiem mass." Ferruccio Bonavia and Marco Beghelli in Grove Music Online. A highly interesting performance copy.

        [Photo Album]: New England Life

Boston and Worchester, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, 1895. Very Good. Oblong quarto. Thick red cloth beveled boards with "Photographs" in silver on front board. Commercially produced with title page reading: "The Art Album for 96 'Bullet' Photographs". Contains 95 sepia-toned gelatin silver prints in the sleeves provided (and one apparently commercially printed, probably collotype, image). Each image is 3.25" x 3.25" and have either mat or glossy finishes. Most are probably Kodak images. Some minimal captioning, mostly with place names. Hinges cracked, with some loose or detached leaves, very good. Some images with fading, overall the images are near fine. A pleasing if somewhat prosaic album of both outside locations and interior domestic images. Among the images are fashionably dressed women at lake side, several boat images: both small steamboats and handsome sailing vessels, and one of a lighthouse. Also many farm images: haywagons, silos, chickens in the barnyard, and a buckboard wagon. Several images of downtown Worchester, Massachusetts, including the train station and a train, the Oddfellows Hall, and several other downtown buildings. Another section features domestic interior images both with and without people posed in them: with an organ, a typewriter on a desk, and a large stove evident. Later are images of Boston: B.F. Kieth's Opera House, Fenuil Hall, Boston Commons, and other buildings. These are followed by some vacation shots in New Hampshire, including one of the Alpine House in Berlin, N.H.,and it ends up with a few images of women clowning around dressed as men. Nice images, mostly of New England domestic and leisure life.

        The Judgment Books.

London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co.,, 1895. Octavo. Original blue vertical ribbed-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt title vignette to front cover, edges untrimmed. Spine gently rolled, light fading to spine and front cover, slight wear extremities, a couple of leaves clumsily opened, final leaf unopened, occasional faint foxing; a very good copy. First edition. This supernatural work by E. F. Benson, best known for his Mapp and Lucia novels, demonstrates his ability as an "important, capable, and skilful Edwardian author of supernatural fiction" (Bleiler). Alongside his social satires, his "stories of horror and the supernatural have remained consistently popular" (ODNB). This work tells the story of a portrait painter, who, as he paints his sitter finds some of his personality move into the portrait and part of the sitter's personality move to him. The tale is reminiscent of Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was first published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, July 1890, and in a substantially revised book form in April 1891. Locke suggests Benson may have originally written this work prior to the release of Dorian Gray, despite the later publication date. This is an uncommon work with seven copies traced institutionally worldwide.

Catalog of 456 Authentic and Unique Designs of Registered Lace Pattern Samples

Nottingham, circa 1895-1910., 1895. Catalog of lace samples, either from a merchant established in the world-renowned and prolific Nottingham Lace Market, or from a lace maker's salesperson approaching the market merchants, containing 456 authentic and unique designs of registered lace patterns. Neatly contained in a period patented purpose-made binding titled "Novelty Laces" and bearing the lace maker's initials E.F.N.. The samples are mounted to blue paper backdrop on cardstock, tipped-in on brown paper leafs. Samples vary in size, the majority ranging from approximately 6 x 2 cm to 7 x 11 cm, the smallest being 3 x 2,5 cm, and the largest being 20,5 x 18,5 cm, and contained in a folio binding by Priestly and Swann, Ltd. whose shop was also on Stoney Street, and who specialized in the making of pattern books. Brown paper boards titled and initialed in gilt to front, with double perforation and leather band closure to facilitate addition or removal of leafs as offerings changed. Volume measures approximately 30 x 44 x 3cm. Some wear to boards, occasional age-toning throughout, otherwise very good condition, an uncommon survivor from the nineteenth century textiles industry. The binder's label on the front pastedown aids in dating the volume. Priestly and Swann Lace Pattern Book Makers, Stoney St., Nottingham appears in the London Commercial Gazette in July 1895, revealing that the firm was established by this time in the famous Lace Market. Also, in January 1895, the firm's owners G. Priestley and E. Swann were granted a patent (No.955) for improvements in printing and blocking in metallic colours. In a March 1911 issue of the Nottingham Evening Post, the firm is listed as Priestly and Swann, Ltd. Stoney Street, Nottingham. [It seems that the firm continued operations until 1962, retaining an office at Plumptre Place, Lace Market.] A generous portfolio of lace offerings from the heyday of Nottingham's lace trade, with this volume, the lace maker would present his selection of lace designs to wholesale clients, not only from England and her neighbours, but to buyers from around the world. A working volume, once in the hands of many a seamstress, tailor, linens maker, and the like, some are marked "Sold Out" in manuscript. It is interesting to note that all but 5 of the samples are white lace, the only exceptions being 1 small black sample perhaps for mourning clothes, and 4 large elegant samples which are each sewn onto a swatch of silk, one black, one pink, one ivory on yellow silk, and one multi-coloured ivory, rose and green. Hundreds of styles are presented, both ornate and simplistic for all audiences and applications, including nettings embellished with floral patterns, some pleated designs with ripples, others with dots, checkers, webs, diamonds, simple weaves, and one with a satin ribbon woven through. The lace maker is only identified by the initials to the front board, E.F.N. Further research into the Nottingham archives may yield fascinating results. The quantity and variety of patterns made available by this single sample book serves to illustrate how the industrial revolution immensely impacted tradition. [In 1799 there were six lace makers in Nottingham. When machines began to do the work traditionally done manually by women, so did production increase and cost decrease. Once only afforded by the wealthy, now lace was a commodity to be enjoyed by all classes. As a result, within some thirty years, by 1832, lace makers, or rather lace producers, numbered 186 in the Nottingham region. The Lace Market continued to grow, and quickly rose to be the center of the lace trade for the entire world.] The Lace Market in Nottingham was the centre of the world's lace industry, consisting of salesrooms displaying and selling the lace, as well as warehouses for storing. Spanning a quarter-mile square in central Nottingham, it was bustling with merchants and buyers.. Manuscript.
