John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1895 - 1895 Wisden Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special

1895. This is a very special 1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for.

TRINIDAD, WEST INDIES (2 MAPS): PORT OF SPAIN AND SAN FERNANDO: INSURANCE PLAN OF PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD. FEBRUARY 1895. [And:] Insurance Plan of San Fernando, Trinidad. February 1895.

Lithograph with original hand colour, Complete Set, 1 Key Plan Sheet + 12 Detailed Sectional Plan Sheets + Index Sheet (Good, Key Plan with some areas of toning, surface abrasion and natural paper thinness on left side (not really affecting printed area); Detailed Sectional Plan Sheets generally with some minor marginal chipping and repaired marginal tears; Index Sheet with marginal tears and small loss of blank space on right) Key and Detailed Sectional Plan Sheets, each 63.5 x 53 cm (25 x 21 inches), Index Sheet, 33 x 53 cm (13 x 21 inches); 12 Detailed Plan Sheets would, if joined, form a map approx. (irregular) 190 x 158 cm (75 x 62 inches). - London, 1895. Lithograph with original hand colour, Complete Set, 1 Key Plan + 2 Detailed Sectional Plan Sheets (Very Good, just some minor marginal toning and chipping and tiny closed marginal tears), each sheet, 63.5 x 53 cm (25 x 21 inches); 2 Detailed Sectional Plan Sheets would, if joined, form a map 63.5 x 106 cm (25 x 42 inches). A rare complete suite of Charles Goad’s magnificent and fascinating insurance maps of Trinidad’s two main cities; namely his gargantuan 13-sheet set of Port of Spain (plus the rare index sheet) and the 3-sheet set of San Fernando; the most important and detailed printed urban plans of fin de siècle Trinidad. - This is a complete suite of Charles Goad’s insurance maps of the two main cities of Trinidad, West Indies, including his gargantuan 13-sheet set covering Port of Spain and his 3-sheet set of San Fernando. In massive scale the maps are by far and away the most accurate and detailed printed plans of Port of Spain and San Fernando made during their era. Each map features a single sheet key map, while the other sheets are ultra-detailed, sectional maps that can be joined to form a larger map. The sectional sheets name every street, railway line, alleyway, park, cultural site, institution, and monument, while precisely outlining every property and building, naming proprietors and businesses. They provide an unprecedented wealth of information regarding the economic and social life of British West Indian ports during the fin de siècle period. Importantly, the maps are replete with information relating to fire prevention and risk. Buildings are colour coded either in soft pink (to denote brick buildings) or yellow (wooden buildings), and in outer areas, symbols denote whether building are built attached or as separate structures. There is also much information on water sources, the fire brigade and prevailing winds. Indeed, it was fire that was by far and away the biggest threat to property and life, whether simply set by accident or arson, or caused by hurricanes or earthquakes. However, Trinidad was lucky compared to other West Indian islands, in that it was not located on ‘Hurricane Alley’ and was nowhere near a major tectonic fault line. The twelve sectional maps of Port of Spain are made to a very large scale of 500 feet to 1 inch; while the two sectional maps of San Fernando are done to an ultra-large scale of 50 feet to 1 inch. The map of Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad, which is located on a natural harbour on the northeastern shore of the Gulf of Paria, was then the second most important city in the British West Indies (next to Kingston, Jamaica), with a population, in 1895, of 52,000 (as noted on the map). Upon the British conquest of Trinidad, in 1797, the new regime invested considerable resources into supporting the small capital city of 3,000, allowing it to physically and economically expand. From 1803, the city was allowed to grown southwards, reclaiming land from the coastal mud flats, creating terra firma that would underlie the Plaza del Marina. Further major reclamation projects occurred in the 1840s the 1870s, so creating the land on which the present 1895 impression of the city is laid. For historians, the Goad plans are invaluable as peerless sources for geography and unban development patterns. The present complete set of 13 is supplemented by rare the index sheet that is often not present (an index sheet was never made for Goad’s San Fernando map). The second set showcases San Fernando, the second city of Trinidad, located to the south of the capital, along the shores of the Gulf of Paria. The set incudes a key map and two ultra-detailed sections. San Fernando was established in 1784, during the Spanish regime, upon the fertile Naparima Plains, and soon prospered a major centre for the sugar industry, and later cacao. As noted on the map, in 1895, San Fernando had a population of 8,000. These two sets of fire insurance plans are fine examples from the amazing numb

The stage copy for the Milan premiere at the Teatro alla Scala on December 26, 1899, which Vanzo conducted. Götterdämmerung is the fourth opera in the Ring cycle. Excerpts were first performed in a concert at the Musikverein in Vienna on March 25, 1875; the entire work was first performed as part of the Ring cycle at Bayreuth on August 17, 1876. "The final opera of the Ring... provides an appropriately weighty conclusion to the epic cycle. 26 years elapsed from the time Wagner made his first prose draft for the work (then called Siegfrieds Tod) to the completion of the full score, with inevitable consequences in terms of stylistic unity. Retrogressive elements of grand opera exist side by side with motivic integration representative of Wagner's most mature style. And yet, the stylistic integrity of Götterdämmerung is scarcely compromised, so skilfully are the disparate elements welded together and so intense the dramaturgical conviction. The resources and stamina demanded by the work (from both singers and orchestra), combined with its sheer length and theatrical potency, make it one of the most daunting yet rewarding undertakings in the operatic repertory." Grove Music Online. Vanzo "conducted Wagner's works in Italy, giving the Italian première of Die Walküre (Turin, 1891) and the Milan première of Götterdämmerung (1896). He conducted Italian works in Moscow (1897) and in 1900 visited Buenos Aires. He retired in 1906. As a pianist he gained a fine reputation (Grieg compared him favourably with Liszt and Rubinstein). He undertook many concert tours, often accompanying his wife, the singer Anna Kribel, with whom he opened a singing school in Milan. His opera Edipo re was composed in 1893 but not performed; his two other operas, Fosca and Pamela, were not completed. His one-act operetta Lubino (Milan, Pezzana, 1887) was performed under the pseudonym Canard. Several songs, piano pieces, chamber music, small-scale choral works and a symphony are in the Milan Conservatory library (I-Mc). He also composed a requiem mass."         [Photo Album]: New England Life

Boston and Worchester, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, 1895. Very Good. Oblong quarto. Thick red cloth beveled boards with "Photographs" in silver on front board. Commercially produced with title page reading: "The Art Album for 96 'Bullet' Photographs". Contains 95 sepia-toned gelatin silver prints in the sleeves provided (and one apparently commercially printed, probably collotype, image). Each image is 3.25" x 3.25" and have either mat or glossy finishes. Most are probably Kodak images. Some minimal captioning, mostly with place names. Hinges cracked, with some loose or detached leaves, very good. Some images with fading, overall the images are near fine. A pleasing if somewhat prosaic album of both outside locations and interior domestic images. Among the images are fashionably dressed women at lake side, several boat images: both small steamboats and handsome sailing vessels, and one of a lighthouse. Also many farm images: haywagons, silos, chickens in the barnyard, and a buckboard wagon. Several images of downtown Worchester, Massachusetts, including the train station and a train, the Oddfellows Hall, and several other downtown buildings. Another section features domestic interior images both with and without people posed in them: with an organ, a typewriter on a desk, and a large stove evident. Later are images of Boston: B.F. Kieth's Opera House, Fenuil Hall, Boston Commons, and other buildings. These are followed by some vacation shots in New Hampshire, including one of the Alpine House in Berlin, N.H.,and it ends up with a few images of women clowning around dressed as men. Nice images, mostly of New England domestic and leisure life.

        The Judgment Books.

London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co.,, 1895. Octavo. Original blue vertical ribbed-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt title vignette to front cover, edges untrimmed. Spine gently rolled, light fading to spine and front cover, slight wear extremities, a couple of leaves clumsily opened, final leaf unopened, occasional faint foxing; a very good copy. First edition. This supernatural work by E. F. Benson, best known for his Mapp and Lucia novels, demonstrates his ability as an "important, capable, and skilful Edwardian author of supernatural fiction" (Bleiler). Alongside his social satires, his "stories of horror and the supernatural have remained consistently popular" (ODNB). This work tells the story of a portrait painter, who, as he paints his sitter finds some of his personality move into the portrait and part of the sitter's personality move to him. The tale is reminiscent of Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was first published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, July 1890, and in a substantially revised book form in April 1891. Locke suggests Benson may have originally written this work prior to the release of Dorian Gray, despite the later publication date. This is an uncommon work with seven copies traced institutionally worldwide.
