Three Novels (Trilby, Peter Ibbetson, The Martian)

1895 - DU MAURIER, George. Trilby. WITH: Peter Ibbetson. WITH: The Martian. London and New York: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine and Harper & Brothers, 1892-98. Three volumes total. Square 12mo, mid-20th century three-quarter blue calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red and burgundy morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. $950.George du Maurier’s three novelsâ€"early English edition of Peter Ibbetson, first English one-volume edition of Trilby and first edition of The Martianâ€"with numerous illustrations by the author, uniformly and handsomely bound by Frost.Already famous as an artist for Punch, du Maurier in 1891, “after discussing his chances with his loyal friend Henry James, accepted a proposal to write a story for Messrs. Harper, the well-known firm of American publishers. The result was Peter Ibbetson, partly based upon recollections of his own early life, blended with a plot turning on a fantastic theory of the sympathetic relationship of dreams… The ample illustrations by the writer, in his most attractive style, contributed greatly to [the book’s] success, which was sufficient to induce the publishers to commission a second story, to be published in monthly installments in the pages of Harper’s. The first chapters of Trilby appeared in January 1894.” Trilby is best remembered for the sinister hypnotist Svengali. The novel would be filmed many times, most notably in 1931 as Svengali, starring John Barrymore. Some readers regard it as a key influence on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, Le Fantome de l’Opera. “It was inevitable, after the immense popularity of Trilby, that liberal offers should be again made to du Maurier for a successor to it… [And so he] completed the whole text of The Martian, together with a portion of the illustrations, the first installment of which, in Harper’s, appeared a few days after his death” in 1896 (DNB). It tells the story “of a sensitive but mysterious Spiritualist who turns out to have been a Martian all her life” (Clute & Nicholls, 357). Early English edition of Peter Ibbetson (the first English edition published in two volumes in 1892; see Sadleir 1674a, Wolff 1950). First English one-volume edition of Trilby (Wolff 1952c). First edition of The Martian (Sadleir 1673; Wolff 1949). An English Library, 19. Barron, Fantasy and Horror 3-36, 3-37. Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Poetical Works.

Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, , 1895. 3 volumes, octavo. Original limp vellum, yapped edges, silk decorations at head and foot of joints, fore edges uncut, issued without ties. Housed in a custom brown linen slipcase. Woodcut title page, borders, and foliate initials. Vols. II and III with some rubrication. Some faint streaking to spines, a little toning to fore edges, internally fresh and bright. An exceptional set. First Kelmscott edition, one of 250 paper copies, from an edition of 256 (six vellum copies were also issued). The book was printed using Golden type, the first of three types designed by William Morris himself; it took Edward P. Prince almost a year to cut the punches, between January and December 1890. As an experiment the usual silk ties were not used; this is the only Kelmscott book so issued. A beautiful set, featuring "some of the loveliest lyrics in English, together with longer poems unsurpassed in beauty and grandeur ... from the pen of this visionary, half-unearthly man" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 559).

Uniform light browning and other minor defects. . First Edition of the second version. Rare. Davis pp. 257-259. Neef p. 411. WorldCat (one copy only, at the National Library of Israel). Additional copies in several European libraries. The first version was published by Rahter and Büttner, Hamburg, in ca. 1881. The basic plate number, found on all non-blank pages, is 979. Several pages have other plate numbers added, referring to offprints: 232 for the overture; 1106, 1109, 1112, 1115, and 1119 for the first five numbers of act 1; 1123 for the final chorus (Hopak) of act 1; 1126 for Levko's song at the beginning of act 3 (part of no. 13a); 1130 for the chorus of the water nymphs (no. 13b). All plate numbers other than 979 appear in a smaller font. The present copy was obviously marked up by a stage director for a production in English. The opera has rarely been performed in English; Sigrid Neef in Pipers Enzyklopädie des Musiktheaters mentions only productions by the Opera Club Oxford (1931) and in Cardiff (1959).

The Architectural History of Harrow Church Derived from a Study of the Building

Wilbee, J. C., Harrow, England 1895 - Contemporary full morocco binding of a dark brown color, and with hubbed spine in six panels. Boards with gilt rules and small gilt decorative motifs, and with small diaper design in blind to the fields. Spine states, in fairly crisp, gilt-stamped letters, "Harrow Church, Gardner." Spine with elaborate and crisp gilt-stamped design. Generally unbumped spine head and tail and with slightly bumped lower corners, The leather binding is exceptionally clean and almost entirely free of scratches, and with minor rubbing along the gutters. The spine is lightly and evenly sunned to a medium brown color. The text block is firmly bound in. 9.25 x 6 inches. With handsome marbled paper pastedowns and FEPs. T.E.G. With xii and 95 numbered pages, including an introduction, the main text, a glossary of technical terms employed, and a postscript. With XL full-page B&W plates plus Plate XLI, a pristine pull-out architectural ground plan of the church, The Church of S. Mary Harrow on the Hill. Also with 15 additional B&W illustrations. We can find no foxing or other blemishes, save for an instance of off-setting. The book is astonishingly clean overall. Front pastedown with the stunning late 19th century armorial bookplate of Harrow School, including the motto "stet fortvna domvs." Near the top of the bookplate is written in a neat ink hand, "E. W. Swan, Term prize for Drawing, 1900' given May 31st, 1900." Hence a presentation copy. Off-setting between p. 72 and the opposite plate, likely due to insertion of a newspaper clipping or similar. Neatly pasted on to a blank rear FEP is a newspaper clipping, "Harrow Church 850 Years Old." Above the clipping in a neat ink hand is, "Times, Jan. 17th 1944." Neatly pasted on to the opposite blank rear FEP is a B&W photo of Harrow Church, doubtless from the same newspaper article. Finally, neatly pasted on to the rear pastedown is a very small -- and somewhat bizarre -- news magazine clipping, "A Railway Victim." The clipping pertains to an interesting gravestone in Harrow-on-the-Hill churchyard regarding a hapless man who was run over and killed by a railway train in 1833, shortly after rail was introduced to Harrow and vicinity. Else a very clean copy. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. An altogether engaging and handsome volume and a pleasure to hold in hand.         Abbas Hilmi II of Egypt.

[Weißenburg, Burckardts Nachfolger, c. 1895]. - Head-and-shoulders portrait. Stencil-coloured lithograph. 43 x 34 cm. One of the very rare Weißenburg illustrated broadsheets showing oriental motifs. These were published under the fictitious address of Hassan Uwais (Auvès) in Cairo. The present leaf shows the last Khedive of Egypt (ruled 1892-1914); thus it must have been published during under Camille Burckardt's successors, who took over the Weißenburg factory in 1889. - Slight tear to right edge; slight creasing. Edges somewhat browned. All of these prints are very rare; a different print commanded £21,250 at Sotheby's in 2012.

Archive]: The William Henry Cabell Family Papers

1895 - An archive of holograph letters, manuscripts, photographs, and related material from the family of William Henry Cabell, Governor of Virginia from 1805 to 1808. The collection contains several letters by outstanding Virginia statesmen. Included are two retained manuscript copies of letters from Virginia governor William Henry Cabell to President Thomas Jefferson, an 1801 letter from J.E.B. Gilmer to U.S. Attorney General William Wirt relating to The College of William & Mary, an 1820 letter to W.H. Cabell from Thomas Jefferson Randolph, an 1821 letter to Cabell from Judge St. George Tucker, and nine other letters to Cabell. Also from this period are contemporary autograph extracts of two 1821 letters from Joseph Carrington Cabell to Thomas Jefferson relating to the founding of the University of Virginia.Among the later letters, spanning the years 1841-1895, is an 1848 letter from John P. Kennedy relating to his biography of William Wirt, and two letters from Fitzhugh Lee to John Grattan Cabell, one about a memorial for General J.E.B. Stuart. Also of importance is a 141-page genealogy of the Cabell family, likely compiled by Edward Carrington Cabell in the latter part of the 19th Century. In total the archive contains 27 Autograph Letters Signed, the manuscript genealogy, five miscellaneous documents, and 19 photographs. The genealogy presents a detailed account of the Cabell family beginning with Dr. William Cabell, who came to Virginia in the early 18th Century. It includes transcribed reminiscences, funeral orations, and related biographical information, along with some tipped-in contemporary newspaper obituaries. Among the photographs are many fine carte-de-visite portraits and silver gelatin prints of Cabell family members.A historically important collection of primary source material documenting one of Virginia's most important families and other equally influential contemporary Virginians. A detailed list is available.

        Autograph Letter Signed

Four page Autograph Letter Signed from D.P. Brown of St. Onge, South Dakota to his cousin James Breckenridge of Stewartsville, Missouri, dated 25 January 1895 on stationery of Adoniram J. Plowman, Attorney at Law of Deadwood. Old folds from mailing, else near fine. Brown relates that he is "about 12 miles from Deadwood & 30 miles from Indian Reservation" and (his idiosyncratic spelling here retained) "I am still alive and am married and living in the Black hills on a Horse Ranch of Judge Plowmans. I got my Rib broken last Saturday was leading a Horse to water and he started to run and I stayed with him to long." He relates that after traveling through Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas, he is: "getting 300 a year and am at no expense but for clothing. Think I shall strike for more money or quit." A relatively interesting cowboy letter. The recipient was likely a member of the prominent Breckenridge family (the letter mentions his family in Kentucky). Plowman was a noted judge in Deadwood. .

New York: F. Tennyson Neely Publisher, n.d. [1895] - Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1-4] 5-499 [500: blank], two inserted plates with illustrations by Miss Fairfax and Mrs. McAuley from drawings by the author, original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, white endpapers. First edition. A later issue of the first edition with the "Arena" imprint on the spine panel and a cancel title page with Neely's imprint. This novel, the second and last of Pope's projected "Romances of the Planets" series, was first published by Arena Publishing Company in 1895. Arena issued the novel in two forms, in cloth with sixteen inserted plates, and in paper with three inserted plates. Neely acquired the Arena sheets (and some clothbound copies) and reissued them with cancel title pages. Although sixteen was the full compliment of plates for the copies bound in cloth, many of the hardbound copies issued by Arena and reissued by Neely have fewer inserted plates, generally three, but sometimes four or two. This copy has two plates, one used as the frontispiece, the other facing page 120. About 1897 Neely reprinted the novel on cheap pulp paper stock as a 25¢ paperback with two inserted plates. In Pope's sequel to JOURNEY TO MARS . (1894), the protagonist and his Martian princess visit Venus, a younger world comparable to some stage of earth's prehistory. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-127; (1981) 1-139; (1987) 1-76; and (1995) 1-76. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1806. Clareson, The Emergence of American Science Fiction: 1880-1915, pp. 202-03.         Photograph of the Football Team of Indian University of Muskogee, Oklahoma

1895 - Albumen photograph. Image size 6.75" x 4.75" mounted on stiff card. Corners of the backing board cut away just slightly affecting a couple of corners but not substantially affecting the image, two faintly visible short cracks in the margins, extending into the image a little, overall very good.Shown are eleven players in two rows either standing or kneeling in front of a backdrop of patterned wallpaper. Dressed in jerseys and padded pants, with one player holding the ball, all players are identified in pencil on the verso with their positions: Brady, Walter Lamar, Alex Yargee, John Phillips, John Meagher, Wm. Merrill, W.B. Wilson, Alex Foreland, Ernest McDaniel, Charlie Moore, and Willie McCombs. The *Indian Journal* of April 12, 1894 mentions Yargee had ".spent Saturday and Sunday in Eufaula in company with Prof. Brown." The *Dawes Final Rolls* listing tribal members in 1902 in which the names of Yargee, Phillips, Maegher, and Merrill appear. The Indian University was founded in 1880 by Almon C. Bacone in Tahlequah, Indian Territory. According to the *Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture*, the school was chartered by the Muscogee-Creek Nation for the purpose of providing a Christian education for American Indians. By 1885, it had been expanded and relocated to Muscogee. Between 1883 and 1895 it graduated 43 students with either bachelor's or master's degrees. It also featured a football team, and played the first Indian Territory football game against Henry Kendall College (later renamed the University of Tulsa). A photograph of the Kendell team exists with the team photographed against the same wallpaper background. It isn't such a large leap to speculate that the portraits were taken at the same time, and mostly likely in commemoration of that first contest. Rare.
