[Photograph Album of 19th Century Czech Chemist in Mexico]: Nas domov v Mexiku. 1895. ["Our Home in Mexico"]

Oblong octavo. Measuring 10.5" x 7.5". Period morocco album titled in gilt on the front board: "Nas domov v Mexiku. 1895. [Our Home in Mexico]". Album contains 52 gelatin silver photographs, each image 7.5" x 4.5", and each captioned in Czech. A trifle rubbed at the extremities, the album is near fine, the images are fine.An excellent photographic album kept by a Czech chemist who specialized in the production of dynamite (his business card is laid in to the album describing himelf as "Chimiste de la Dynamite Nobel") who had emigrated to Mexico from Prague. From the photographic evidence in the album it appears that Jelinek settled somewhere in central Mexico and established a chemical laboratory specializing in explosives, presumably in support of the mining trades. The domestic photographs are quite interesting and illustrate the European furnishings of a well-to-do established household. They also include some striking portrait images of the couple transformed from stodgy European fashions to classic Mexican finery complete with silk rebozo for the lady and a sombrero for the gentleman. Also included are rooftop panoramas of the unmistakably Mexican town (although it is unidentified). Other images include local domestic help, and one image of a map of Mexico on the wall. There is a section of the album devoted to showing what the makeshift explosives laboratory looked like (it occupied the upper floors of a building, probably the building within which they were domiciled). An additional loose, boudouir-size cabinet photograph by R. Barajas depicts Jelinek's grave, indicating that he died in Mexico on 1 October 1897. The images are of excellent quality, and are useful in illustrating the lives of the expatriate Czech couple living in Mexico in the late 19th Century. .

        CANYONS OF THE COLORADO

Meadville, Pa, 1895. Half title. Frontispiece portrait. Large quarto. Modern three-quarter leather and original brown publisher's cloth, cover stamped in gilt, spine gilt, leather labels. Old ex-lib. markings on half title, titlepage, and text block edges. Some leaves with small edge tears. Minor soiling. A good copy. This is the first complete narrative of Powell's famous expedition of 1869-72, previously documented only in reports consisting largely of scientific data. Privately published, this volume contains far more information than any of the government reports of Powell's journeys, and is the best book of one of the seminal figures in the West in the late 19th century. It also contains important documentation of Powell's botanizing and collecting activities. The double-page views of the Grand Canyon are after beautiful drawings by topographical artist W.H. Holmes. This is a very elusive book, remarkable in being quite large and extensive, but privately printed and evidently issued in a very small edition. It is one of the most difficult books to find, of major textual importance, in all Western Americana.

Leipzig, Naumman (1895-97, 1901-04) / Kröner Verlag (1910-13), 1895-1904. - Erste komplette Gesamtausgabe. In vorliegender Form seltene Ausgabe. John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1895 - 1895 Wisden Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special.

1895. This is a very special 1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for.

THE WESSEX NOVELS - Remarkably Fine, fresh and bright Complete Set of Eighteen Volumes, Purchased new in Dorchester with Original Stationers Blind-Stamps (Works, Writings)

London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1895. Hardy, Thomas. THE WESSEX NOVELS. [Complete In XVIII Volumes]. London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., 1895-1913. First Uniform and Complete Edition of Hardy's prose. All eighteen volumes uncut and uniform in original publisher's dark green cloth; gilt monogram on front boards, t.e.g. An etched frontispiece in each volume by H. Macbeth-Raeburn. Blind-stamp reading "W. E. CASE, STATIONERS, DORCHESTER" on the front-free endpaper of seven of the titles. This run of perfectly matched bright unrubbed copies (just a few stray scrapes), a REMARKABLY FINE SET, appears to have been put together by the same individual during the 1890's (while Hardy was living just down the road at Max Gate). This is the FIRST TRUE COLLECTED EDITION of Hardy's works and it contains three first editions: JUDE THE OBSCURE (found here with all first issue points), THE WELL-BELOVED, and A CHANGED MAN. This edition is of further importance as every novel, for the first time, had been extensively revised by the author who also provided each with a new and important preface. Initially published in the I-XVI volume Wessex Novels, 1895-96, THE WELL-BELOVED (Osgood, McIlvaine, 1897) and A CHANGED MAN (Macmillan, 1913) followed on in identical format as volumes XVII and XVIII. While the easily found Macmillan 1912-1914 WESSEX EDITION is generally lauded as the first collected writings with the text exactly as Hardy wanted it for posterity, and Macmillan's MELLSTOCK EDITION of 1919-1920 is deservedly praised for its glamorous and lush 37-volume signed limited edition, the Osgood set is by far the rarest of the three in FINE ORIGINAL CONDITION. Highly desirable as such, inexplicably underrated and undervalued by collectors, dealers, and institutional libraries for over a hundred years. Purdy pp. 279-282. . Decorative Cloth. Fine. Illus. by H. Macbeth Raeburn.

The Savoy. An Illustrated Quarterly [complete in 8 issues].

London: Leonard Smithers, 1895 and 1896., 1895. Complete 8 issues, with the suppressed prospectus, Christmas card, inserts, etc. Eight vols. Quarto. First two vols bound in pink paper boards, front boards with Beardsley illustrations in black ink, titles in black to spine. Vols three to eight bound in soft blue paper covers, with Beardsley illustration and red titles to front cover, titles in black to spine; the illustration of vol five signed "Giulio Floriani" is a pseudonym for Beardsley. The prospectus, dated December 1895, is bound in pink soft paper covers, and contains the Christmas card and other inserts. With a slipcase bound in quarter black morocco over black cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt titles to spine, containing a stiff cloth-covered chemise. The prospectus shows well, bright and largely clean, with minor tears to top and bottom of joint, some bumping to corners. Vol one is chipped and worn to corners, spine ends and joints, front board and spine somewhat tanned. Vol two is bright and clean, front joint starting, minor bumping to corners and spine ends. Vols three to eight in blue paper are all attractive, though rubbed, with bumping to edges, small tears to spine ends, covers coming away from spines of vols three, six, and eight. All vols are internally clean, plates sharp, with no hints of foxing. One outward facing joint of the chemise is starting, and the slipcase shows some wear, including two worn corners and some scratches to base. This is a handsome set, notable for its completeness, with the inclusion of the prospectus and the elusive Christmas card. A collaboration between several leading figures of the Decadent movement, including Beardsley, Symons, and Smithers, designed to give the remaining members of the Decadent movement an outlet for thier publications as the public mood turned against them following the trial of Oscar Wilde. Indeed, it was conceived as a rival to The Yellow Book, from which Beardsley had been fired in 1895. The first number included submissions from George Bernard Shaw, George Moore, Havelock Ellis, W. B. Yeats, and Max Beerbohm, and the periodical continued to attract serious literary figures until the end of 1896, when having won admiration and 'made warm friends and heated enemies' alike, it ceased publication after only a year's run.

        Syr Perecyvelle of Gales

Kelmscott Press, Hammersmith 1895 - Edward Burne-Jones. Hardcover. One of 350 paper copies. A significant presentation copy, inscribed by William Morris to his sister-in-law "to Elizabeth Burden from William Morris May 13th 1895." This was one of only eleven copies of the title inscribed by Morris, and it is listed in William Peterson's bibliography as one of the copies he examined (A33). Elizabeth Burden (familiarly known as Bessie) was Jane Morris's younger sister, and was with her when the teenage Jane was first spotted by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones in 1857. Bessie was an expert needlewoman and worked for the Morris firm. She was very involved with Morris tapestries, and may have engraved at least one of the woodblocks for the aborted illustrated edition of The Earthly Paradise. She was a constant presence in the family circle and a regular recipient of Kelmscott Press books. This volume was based on the text of The Thornton Romances: The Early English Romances of Perceval, Isumbras, Eglamour, and Degrevant - a favorite of Morris from his college days. Bound in quarter holland (blue paper boards with linen spine). Title printed in black on front board. Printed in black and red inks with Chaucer type on Flower paper. With a beautiful frontispiece illustration by Edward Burne-Jones, and Morris ornaments and initials throughout. An exceptional copy in fine condition. Prospectus inserted. 98 pages. PRI/011516.         The Tale of Beowulf sometime king of the Folk of the Weder Geats

Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1895. Very Good+. One of 300 paper copies (8 copies were printed on vellum). His daughter May wrote later that William Morris thought Beowulf was the first and the best poem of the English race. He began a translation of scholar Alfred John Wyatt's rendering of the poem in February 1893. It was finally completed and passed to the press in December 1894 and published in February 1895 (Peterson bibliography A32). Printed on lovely Perch paper in black and red inks with the text in Troy type. Shoulder and side notes, argument, list of persons and places, and glossary in Chaucer type. There are beautiful borders, ornaments and initials designed by Morris throughout. The borders were used only once again, in the Jason. Bound in original full limp vellum with brown silk ties. Beowulf is stamped in gold on spine. The vellum is somewhat soiled and there is a small orange mark at top of front cover. Five of the six fragile ties are intact; the other tie is torn off but inserted in the book. Interior pages are bright and clean, with a slight discoloration to the bottom edge of pages 77-78. The publisher's slip inserted at time of publication is present, stating: "NOTE TO READER. In this translation of Beowulf, the final ed, where the e in not elided by the printer, is intended to be pronounced in every case." Bookplate of barrister Edwin Wilfrid Fordham affixed to front pastedown. Also laid in is a receipt for the 1950 sale of this book by London bookseller Francis Edwards to Palmyra New York attorney Charles C. Cogdon. Very good plus condition. 119 pages. MOR/102815.
