        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Paris, 7. V. 1894.

1894. 4 SS. - In lila Tinte; kleine Randeinrisse.

REPORT ON INDIANS TAXED AND NOT TAXED IN THE UNITED STATES (EXCEPT ALASKA) AT THE ELEVENTH CENSUS: 1890.

Washington. 1894. - vi,[2],683pp. plus twenty-five maps (three of them large, colored, folding maps) and 203 plates, consisting of twenty in color (two folding), twenty- five uncolored lithographs, and 158 photographic plates. Large, thick quarto. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Several small tears to edges of leaves, light scattered soiling and wear. Very good. One of the most important and exhaustive treatments of the American Indian in the 19th century. As American Indians had not been treated in detail in previous censuses, it was decided under the administration of Superintendent Robert Porter to prepare this mammoth undertaking, which pays scrupulous, detailed attention to the present state of the American Indian of the times. Included are discussions of Indian populations by state, status reports concerning life on the reservations, disbursement of populations on and off reservations, progress in schooling and employment, etc. Virtually every aspect of the topic is at least considered in this work, if not investigated in depth. The highly prized lithograph color plates of Indian life by noted artists are the best such works undertaken in a government publication, and are of exceptional quality. The scores of photographic plates show tribal leaders, delegations, homes, schools, food preparation, craft making, artifacts, etc., and provide an outstanding visual catalogue of the tribes near the turn of the 20th century. HOWES D418, "aa." REESE, STAMPED WITH A NATIONAL CHARACTER 33.

Climbing and Exploration in the Karakoram - Himalayas. With illustrations by A.D. McCormick.

THE FIRST MAJOR ATTEMPT TO EXPLORE THE KARAKORAM. CONWAY, William Martin Climbing and Exploration in the Karakoram - Himalayas. With illustrations by A.D. McCormick. T. Fisher Unwin, 1894. 3 Volumes bound in 4. Large 8vo. pp. xix, 360: xv, 361 - 709: viii, 126; portrait frontispiece in vol. 1, 300 illustrations plus duplicate proofs, 3 folding maps in separate volume. All volumes uniformly bound in beige cloth, maroon morocco labels, text volumes slight darkening to spines; a Very Good set. Number 73 of 150 Copies Signed by the Author. William Conway (1856 - 1937) developed an interest in mountaineering whilst at Cambridge and became a member of the Alpine Club in 1877. Although a typical Victorian in his wide ranging interests, he was a keen bibliophile and a lover of the fine arts, later becoming Roscoe Professor of Art at University College, Liverpool. Conway was in no sense an amateur climber. He took as his model Edward Whymper's expedition to the Great Andes of the Equator, which had already demonstrated how a scientific mountaineering expedition should be organised, and the importance Conway attached to the separately published scientific reports clearly reflects this ambition. As W.A.B. Coolidge observed in the Pall Mall Gazette: "The book is not merely the narrative of the best organised and most successful mountaineering expedition as yet made, it is a most valuable and minute account, based on first-hand evidence, of a most fascinating region of the heaven-soaring Himalayas." A scarce account of a remarkable achievement. Neate C103; Yakushi C143.

(Paris, Dupont), 1894.

1894. Large 8vo. 21, (1) pp., final blank. Modern green leather binding with red marbled endpapers. Rare French consular report on the manufactures and commerce of Persia (now Iran), providing a detailed account of the region's principal produce in the late 19th century. Among the principal commodities imported to Persia are coffee (from Arabia), pearls (from the pearl banks of Bahrain), and - remarkably - petroleum (from Russia). A British exploration company is said to be prospecting for oil in the country, but "so far without any practical result": only in 1908 would large quantities of oil be discovered at Masjed Soleyman (today, Iran possesses the world's fourth-largest oil reserves). Exports include dried fruits and opium as well as pearls and mother-of-pearl (largely also originating from Bahrein). Imports from France are said to be virtually nil, and a lengthy paragraph is devoted to the means by which commerce with the Gulf might be boosted. - Paper browned and brittle, rebound with repairs to gutter; title page slightly cracked..         Pithecanthropus erectus. [AND] An original photo of the type locality at Trinil, Java, most probably by Eugène Dubois himself.

Batavia, Landesdruckerei, 1894. Large 4to (32.2 x 25.9 cm). Title page, [ii], 31 pp., two plates (one with photos of a skull, the other a tinted lithograph of bones), two text engravings. Blind quarter cloth over original printed boards.= Unique dedication copy of the true first edition of this ground breaking work in human evolution, being the first unambiguous record of "the missing link", a human species decidedly older and more primitive than Homo sapiens, based on well-preserved fossils found at Trinil near the Bengawan [Bengavian] Solo river in east-central Java. The Dutch anatomist, anthropologist and palaeontologist Marie Eugène François Thomas Dubois (1858-1940) was the first to deliberately search for hominid fossils, and the first to be successful at it. Dubois' discovery was proof that humans were as much the subject of evolution as any other animal or plant. This edition precedes the edition from "Jaarboek van het Mijnwezen" and its offprint, which were both published in 1895. Dubois immediately realized the great importance of his discovery and could not wait for the "Jaarboek" to be published, let alone for a thorough description of all the mammalian fossils found at the Trinil site. It took Dubois and his fossils many years to convince the majority of the scientific world of the importance of these findings, and today it is universally regarded as a cornerstone in human palaeontology and evolution. This edition was printed at and published by the "Landesdruckerei" [actually Landsdrukkerij in Batavia, or modern day Jakarta]. Very few copies of this edition are known to exist. Provenance: on the front free endpaper, Dubois wrote in a neat hand "Met broederlijke groet van den schrijver" [with brotherly regards from the author]. An oblong albumen print (11.8 x 15.8 cm) of the Bengawan Solo river, cutting through the Pleistocene deposits in which P. erectus was found, has been inserted. In the left lower centre is a white tent, most probably of Dubois's team, adjacent to a cliff with outcrops of sediment layers. On the photo verso "vindplaats Pithecanthropus" [type locality of Pithecanthropus] is written in an old hand. A unique copy - inscribed by the author to his brother - with an original photograph. See http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/homs/edubois.html. Garrison-Morton, 210.

Title page, portrait of Victoria Woodhull Martin, 480 pages, 5 portraits, 5 pages of index, 1 page contributors list. Articles feature an interview with Alfred Russell Wallace on "Heredity and Pre-Natal Influences", and contributions such as Arnold Bennett's "Faust and Marguerite", Stoppard A. Brooke on "The Story of the Women's Trades Union League", Sir William Moore's "The Anti-Opium Crusade", Morley Roberts on "The true Function of Cannibalism", Ettore Socci with "An Italian View of the Women's Movement", Mrs Aubrey Richardson on "Women and Gambling", and "Women in the Jury Box", and there are at least six pieces by Victoria Woodhull including "The Humanitarian Movement" and "The Evolution of Government". It is likely that a number of the unattributed shorter articles are by Woodhull too. Original green decorative cloth. Spine rubbed clean of lettering. Worn at corners and head and tail of spine. Shaken at inner joints, contents virtually loose from the binding, and one gather at rear almost completely detached. Some damage to text of page 159-160. Fore edges marked. Regardless of condition, this is a very rare volume, by one of the most interesting women of the nineteenth century. Perhaps most striking amongst her achievements was running for President of the United States in 1872, likely the first woman to do so, and with the former slave Frederick Douglas as her running-mate. She sought further nominations in 1884 and 1892. Later in her life she campaigned with views on abortion, eugenics, vegetarianism, sex education, prostitution, free love, and even short skirts. By 1877 she was living in London and met her third husband, banker John Biddulph Martin, and married in 1883. Under the name Victoria Woodhull Martin she began publishing "The Humanitarian", running from 1892 to 1901. Her husband died that year and she gave up published. She died in 1927, having lived a life with careers as varied as a Stockbroker (first woman on Wall Street to own her own brokerage, with her sister), a newspaper editor, women's rights advocate, and member of the First International. In Britain her chief contribution to public life was through the publication of "The Humanitarian", in which she was helped by her daughter Zula. Size: Octavo (standard book size).         Hoyt's A Black Sheep

New York: The Strobridge Lith. Co., 1894. Original poster. Color lithograph. 38.75 x 29 inches. This beautiful 1894 poster for Charles Hale Hoyt's 'A Black Sheep And How it Came Out in the Wash' an image of features Fanny Da Costa "The Queen of Burlesque". The New York Times called the play a success and a big hit. According to the review "'A Black Sheep' is amusing, and it has an understandable story. It carries as many singing and dancing 'specialties' as Mr. Hoyt ever out into 'The Tin Soldier' or 'The Brass Monkey'; but those specialties are not introduced in the usual 'I'll-sing-a-song-that-will-tell-you-all-about-it' style."Charles H. Hoyt was a popular American dramatist in the late 19th century. He wrote over twenty comedy dramas, often involving baseball. This is a scarce poster for one of his popular work. The poster is in good condition with some wear along the folds. Minor edge wear and toning at places. Large rip on the right hand of the poster, repaired on verso.

The Humanitarian. A Monthly Review of Sociological Science. Edited by Victoria Woodhull Martin. Volume IV, January - June 1894

17 Hyde Park Gate, S.W, London, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair Condition. Bits of Old Chelsea. A Series of Forty-One Etchings ... with Letterpress Description by Lionel Johnson and Richard le Gallienne.

Folio (446 x 310mm), pp. vii, [1 (blank)], 84; title printed in red and black and with publisher's device in red; mounted etched frontispiece and 40 mounted etchings printed on Japanese vellum, all signed in pencil by Burgess and retaining guards, mounted etched additional title printed on Japanese vellum; a few very faint marks, soft creases on the margins of a few plates, frontispiece creased; original maroon buckram, upper board lettered in gilt and with publisher's device in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's monogram on lower board, uncut, a few ll. unopened; light offsetting on endpapers, extremities slightly rubbed and bumped, foot of spine slightly chipped, nonetheless a very fresh, clean copy; provenance: David Enders (1922-2000).First edition, limited to 110 copies, of which 100 were for sale. This series of etchings was executed by the British engraver and painter Walter William Burgess RE (1856-1908), who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1874 and 1903, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1883. The etchings depict historic and picturesque buildings, sites, and monuments in Chelsea, including Chelsea Reach, Swan Walk, the Royal Hospital, Old Battersea Bridge, Cheyne Walk, Lindsey House, the Old Church, the More Chapel, the More Monument, Petyt House, Carlyle's House, Queen's House, George Eliot's House, Turner's House, Leigh Hunt's House, Belle-Vue House, Whistler's House, Franklin's House, the Physic Garden, Glebe Place, and Lordship Place. The text accompanying Burgess' images was written by two young poets who were highly-regarded figures in the 'decadent' literary circles of the 1890s - Lionel Johnson (1867-1902) and Richard Le Gallienne (1866-1947), who were, with W.B. Yeats, Oscar Wilde, et al., early members of the Rhymer's Club and contributors to The Yellow Book. This copy is from the collection of the actor, restaurateur, and bibliophile David Enders, who was educated at Lindisfarne College and Wadham College, Oxford, before he was commissioned into the Welsh Guards in 1942. He was invalided out of the army in 1944 and then pursued a very successful career as an actor, both in the theatre and in radio drama. In 1950, Enders and his partner, the actor John Glen, opened the restaurant L'Aiglon in Old Church Street, Chelsea: 'the food was excellent and cheap enough to make it an economical alternative to eating at home for those living round about. The business expanded when their friend Sir Laurence Olivier suggested they start a restaurant at the Chichester theatre' (T. Pocock, 'David Enders' in Chelsea Society Annual Report (2000), pp. 63-4 at p. 64). Enders lived in Chelsea, latterly in Carlyle Square, for some fifty years, and his obituarist wrote that he 'might be described by a future anthropologist as a splendid example of Chelsea Man. [...] David was tireless in battling what he considered misguided developments in Chelsea; he was an active member of the Chelsea Society' (loc. cit.).

All pages and bindings relatively bright and tight. A few pages (mainly among the adverts) were once dog-eared but have been smoothed. Gilt slightly faded. Minimal wear to covers with corners very slightly bumped with small abraisions (< 1/8") to lower corners of volumes II & III exposing boards but not visible unless volumes scrutinized. Another barely noticeable feature is the very slight rectilinear discoloration (about 3" x 4") appearing on each volume's upper cover (caused perhaps by bookends or dividers placed between each volume causing small offset marks). Vol. V has wear along the outer upper & lower joints and paper beginning to split along inner hinges (though not affecting the sewing), plus smoothed once dog-eared upper right corners to pages (i-xvi). Because this is a multi-volume set, additional shipping charges may be necessary.

14 eigenh. Briefe mit U. und 2 eh. Handzeichnungen. Wien, 1894 bis 1898.

Briefkopf.

George Allen, London 1894 - 8vo, pp. 476. Original green cloth boards, title and peacock design in gilt to front panel and spine. All edges gilt. Tissue guard to frontispiece. Contemporary ownership signature to half-title. Very slight cocking, a little light foxing to preliminaries, otherwise a beautiful copy with absolutely minimal bumping to corners and spine ends, tightly bound, and with the gilt design to boards still bright. Elegant line drawings by Hugh Thomson throughout. The 'Peacock' edition -- fittingly, the most beautiful edition of Austen's novel ever published. A perfect marriage of object and contents, the book was designed and illustrated by Hugh Thomson [1860-1920]. Following the success of this volume, he went on to illustrate all of Austen's work, as well as books by Dickens, Thackeray and J.M.Barrie.
