Pithecanthropus erectus. Eine menschenaehnliche Uebergangsform aus Java. Mit Zwei tafeln und Drei in den Text gedruckten Figuren. [AND] An original photo of the type locality at Trinil, Java, most probably by Eugène Dubois himself.

      - Batavia, Landesdruckerei, 1894. Large 4to (32.2 x 25.9 cm). Title page, [ii], 31 pp., two plates (one with photos of a skull, the other a tinted lithograph of bones), two text engravings. Blind quarter cloth over original printed boards.= Unique dedication copy of the true first edition of this ground-breaking work in human evolution, being the first unambiguous record of "the missing link", a human species decidedly older and more primitive than Homo sapiens, based on well-preserved fossils found at Trinil near the Bengawan [Bengavian] Solo river in east-central Java. The Dutch anatomist, anthropologist and palaeontologist Marie Eugène François Thomas Dubois (1858-1940) was the first to deliberately search for hominid fossils, and the first to be successful at it. Dubois' discovery was proof that humans were as much the subject of evolution as any other animal or plant. This edition precedes the edition from "Jaarboek van het Mijnwezen" and its offprint, which were both published in 1895. Dubois immediately realized the great importance of his discovery and could not wait for the "Jaarboek" to be published, let alone for a thorough description of all the mammalian fossils found at the Trinil site. It took Dubois and his fossils many years to convince the majority of the scientific world of the importance of these findings, and today it is universally regarded as a cornerstone in human palaeontology and evolution. This edition was printed at and published by the "Landesdruckerei" [actually Landsdrukkerij in Batavia, or modern-day Jakarta]. Very few copies of this edition are known to exist. Provenance: on the front free endpaper, Dubois wrote in a neat hand "Met broederlijke groet van den schrijver" [with brotherly regards from the author]. An oblong albumen print (11.8 x 15.8 cm) of the Bengawan Solo river, cutting through the Pleistocene deposits in which P. erectus was found, has been inserted. In the left lower centre is a white tent, most probably of Dubois's team, adjacent to a cliff with outcrops of sediment layers. On the photo verso "vindplaats Pithecanthropus" [type locality of Pithecanthropus] is written in an old hand. A unique copy - inscribed by the author to his brother - with an original photograph.         Reginald Birch published art with drawings of classic Victorian children: "A Candy - man"

[New York], c. 1894. 21" x 18". "Illustration original art. Ink and goache on bristol board, 21"" x 18"". Soft soiling/handling marks, corner edgewear, well outside of margins. Faint pencil marks. Verso with large publisher's pencil marks identifying the date of Nov. '94, and the title of the piece ""The Candy-man"". Signed by Reginald Birch lower right ""Birch"".A spectacular inked final published piece, with the little boy sporting the iconic Fauntleroy suit, also known as ""The Buster Brown suit"", which started a fashion craze in America. Although unclear which publication this was ultimately included in, Reginald Birch was a regular contributor to numerous magazines during his residency in New York, including St. Nicholas, the Century, Harper's, Life, and The Youth's Companions, among others. Birch was best known for his depiction of the titular hero of Frances Hodgeon Burnett's 1886 novel Little Lord Fauntleroy, whose young protagonist's long, curly hair and velvet and lace suit, which became widely imitated by mothers as a pattern of dress for little boys. The story, and his illustrations, became such as success that first it was published as a serial in St. Nicholas Magazine from November 1885 to October 1886, then as a book by Scribner's (the publisher of St. Nicholas) in 1886. Birch's illustrations set fashion trends and the novel even set a precedent in copyright law when Burnett won a lawsuit in 1888 against E. V. Seebohm over the rights to theatrical adaptations of the work. The wonderful inked images of these children are perfectly reminiscent of the Victorian era, a graceful, childish figure in a black velvet suit, with a lace collar, and with lovelocks waving about, and a handsome, manly little face dressed in the classic fashion of the time. The Buster Brown suit included a velvet cut away jacket and matching knee pants worn with a fancy blouse with a large lace or ruffled collar. These suits appear right after the publication of Mrs. Burnett's story (1885) and were a major fashion until after the turn of the 20th century. Many boys who did not wear an actual Fauntleroy suit wore suits with Fauntleroy elements such as a fancy blouse or floppy bow. The adorable images of the two little girls standing aside their brother are also equally detailed, with the youngest holding a doll upside down dangling from her arms as she is mesmerized by the street vendor selling candy.Signed by Birch lower right, this large spectacular piece is in great condition and would display beautifully framed."

Foix: Francal, 1894. SECOND EDITION. Engraved frontispiece, 25 illustrations (many of which are colored). Half-cloth and marbled boards; other than some minor foxing on exterior leaves, a fine copy. . Second edition of an incredibly rare treatise on an atmospheric modeling tool. Rougerie (1832-1907) was the bishop of Pamiers and an avid meteorologist. He published multiple texts on scientific, historic, and Catholic subjects, including works support of charitable societies such as the French Red Cross, research on the Gallic tribes, instructions for pilgrimages, and meteorology.

Photograph album of Thursday Island and North Queensland, circa 1895

Contemporary album, oblong folio (350 x 470 mm), half maroon morocco over red cloth boards (rubbed and faded) with ornamental gilt borders, upper board lettered in gilt 'Thursday Island', spine with raised bands and gilt ornament (split at the head), original floral-patterned lining papers, front paste-down with label of 'Baker & Rouse, Photographic Importers, 46 Queen St. Brisbane', all edges gilt, containing 43 albumen print photographs with views of Thursday Island and North Queensland in various sizes from 145 x 185 mm to the extremely large format of 260 x 360 mm, most with pencilled captions on the mount or captions in the negative, one dated in the negative December 1894; the majority of the images are by unidentified commercial studios, but the views of North Queensland are probably attributable to Alfred Atkinson, and several views of Thursday Island to Gilbert Smith (one image bears his imprint), O. Watson or Richard Nicholas (St. Austell Studio); several photographs, most notably a small group of pearling images, appear to be by an amateur photographer; the album leaves with scattered foxing, generally confined to the margins; the albumen prints in good condition, though many have some degree of fading. The identity of the compiler of this album is unknown, but he was possibly associated in some way with the Thursday Island merchants Brown, Campbell & Co. Ltd., given that the first photograph in the album is a glorious close-up shot of the company's building. The album represents a precious visual record of the tropical far north at the close of the nineteenth century, significant, in particular, for its documentation of life and commercial activity on Thursday Island and adjacent islands in the Torres Strait, Australia's northernmost outposts. 1.         An Imaginary Portrait

12mo. Oxford: H. Daniel, 1894. 12mo., 61 pp., Daniel Press publisher's device on rear wrapper, last page and flourishes. Original printed wrappers, untrimmed hand-made paper, with ink ownership inscription of Harriette Morrell, dated 1894 to head of upper wrapper. Light foxing to edges of wrappers; very good. First edition thus. 250 copies printed, this is number 6. Ex libris Frederic and Harriette Morrell of Black Hall, Oxford. From the Daniel Press, printed by Charles Henry Daniel in Oxford while bursar of Worcester College. The well-known essay entitled 'The Child in the House' is one of Pater's most delicate character drawings, and is believed to be largely autobiographical. It portrays the development of a sensitive child's mind in an old-fashioned house near the city, and forms a desirable volume. First printed in Macmillan's Magazine, vol. 38 (1878), p. 313, it is here for the first time reprinted with loving care. Pater's close friends from the 1870s and 1880s included Oscar Wilde, Vernon Lee, Arthur Symons, Mary Robinson, and Edmund Gosse, all known for subverting sexual conventions of the time. Henry Daniel was a friend and admirer of Pater, though his senior by some years. DP 33.

Ein geologischer Querschnitt durch die Ost-Alpen nebst Anhang über die sog Glarner Doppelfalte

Stuttgart, E. Schweizerbart (E. Koch), 1894. 8vo (22.4 x 15.4 cm). iv, 208 pp. two full colour folded profiles of which one measuring 22.5 x 352 cm (!), 115 text illustrations. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Gilt lines and two red morocco labels with gilt title on the spine. Edges speckled.= A fine and detailed study with excellent illustrations by the German geologist August Rothpletz (1853-1918), being the result of many years of field work in the Alps. The size of one of the folded profiles is simply amazing: over 3.5 meters or nearly 12 foot. It runs from Schäftlarn near Muenich at 48º North to Tezze in Italy, at 45º40' North, i.e. a distance of nearly 300 kilometers, all figured and coloured in great detail (scale 1:75,000), and accompanied by several shorter profiles of other sections and a map. The second folded chart has two profiles and a map. Small old stamp in the title page top margin and on the second, smaller chart verso, otherwise a very good clean copy with the extremely long profile in perfect condition. Not in Ward & Carozzi.

Zoologische Forschungsreisen in Australien und den Malayischen Archipel. Mit Unterstützung des Herrn Dr. Paul von Ritter ausgeführt in den Jahren 1891-1893 von Richard Semon. Fünfter Band: systematik, Tiergeographie, Anatomie wirbelloser Thiere. Mit 67 lithographischen Tafeln und 17 Abbildungen im Text.

      - Jena, Gustav Fischer, 1894-1903. Large 4to and folio (both 35.7 x 27.6 cm). vii, 778 pp., 67 lithographed plates of which many in chromolithography, 17 text engravings. Uniform printed wrappers.= These are the results of a zoological expedition to Australia and the Malayan Archipelago by the German zoologist and evolutionist Richard Wolfgang Semon (1859-1918). Most groups dealt with are marine invertebrates, but there are chapters on the entomology (with, for instance one fine, coloured plate of butterflies), and herpetology (with a coloured plate containing frogs and a snake species). Mollusca are well represented with papers by Von Martens (continental molluscs, with one coloured plate) and marine Mollusca, and Haller (on the anatomy of Nautilus pompilius, with two coloured plates). In total, 46 different papers are included, many containing new species. Among the localities visited by Semon are West Java, Ambon, Thursday Island in the Torres Strait and several places in Queensland, Australia. Semon is perhaps better remembered for mneme theory "Semon argued not only that information is encoded into memory and that there are 'memory traces' (engrams) or after-effects of stimulation that conserve the changes in the nervous system, he also contended that these changes in the brain (that is, engrams) are inherited. Semon's mneme theory fell into disrepute largely because in a Lamarckian fashion it proposed that memory units are passed from one generation to another" (vide Wikipedia). His travels are less well known, although the narrative "Im australischen Busch und an den Küsten des Korallenmeeres" (1896) was reprinted in 1903. This is the complete volume 5, a massive work in itself. The other four volumes deal with morphological and anatomical investigations of marsupials, lungfish, etc., and are not included. All parts are very rare. Uncut. Some light chipping to the wrappers edges, otherwise a very good, complete copy. Cat. BM(NH), p. 1899; not in Nissen ZBI (underscoring its rarity).
