        The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

London: George Newnes, 1894 First edition, first printing. Illustrated by Sidney Paget. Publisher's dark blue cloth, beveled edges, Strand Library pictorial stamp to the front board in black, gilt lettering, all edges gilt. Very good, with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, light toning to the spine, minor soiling and faint rubbing to the boards, spine starting at the hinges, small bookseller plate to the rear pastedown, a hint of offsetting to the endpapers, a few faint hints of scattered spotting to the otherwise very bright and clean pages. A pleasing copy. Green & Gibson A14a. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of Doyle's short stories of the adventures of his character Sherlock Holmes, culminating in "The Final Problem," which tells of Holmes' demise. The text is illustrated by Sidney Paget, including a frontispiece entitled "The Death of Sherlock Holmes" which depicts the detective as he fights with his arch nemesis Professor Moriarty over the Reichenbach Falls, just before the two apparently fall to their deaths. Doyle intended Memoirs to be the final stories about Sherlock Holmes, but he ended up reviving the detective in 1901 in The Hound of the Baskervilles due to public outrage.. Illus. by Paget, Sidney. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Small 8vo journal. Unpaginated. About 200 pages of manuscript entries The Torr Head was a twin screw steamer launched at Belfast in 1894. She was sunk by a German U Boar in 1917. Loughridge provides a very close record of life at sea and of the specifics of managing vessel, cargo, and passengers - "The 'landlubber' has got it into his novel-crammed brain that the Bay of Biscay is a wild tumultuous waste of raving roaring billows..."         Les Mois. Douze Compositions

Paris: G. De Malherbe, 1894. Paris: G. De Malherbe, 1894. Paris: G. De Malherbe (1894 or 1896). 4to, original printed gray wrappers, slightly soiled; plates fine. A ravishing series of twelve color plates, one for each month, designed for the calendar of La Belle Jardinière, a Parisian department store, depicting pretty young women tending their gardens; the gardens and the women’s clothes and activities change with the seasons. The plates are engraved on wood and printed on vellum in "Gillotage," an early form of photolithography invented by Grasset’s friend Firmin Gillot. The work is particulary lovely on vellum as compared to the paper examples. Harvard, Turn of a Century, 50: ". a lady’s book à la mode with comely maidens dressed in ‘aesthetic’ free-flowing costumes. these garden settings are a foil for his sense of formalized surface patterns.".. Wrappers... Fine.. Illus. by Eugene Grasset... 4to.

        Tales of Mean Streets

London, Methuen. 1894. London, Methuen. 1894, 1894. First Edition. 8vo. 301pp + 32pp ads dated October 1894. Publisher's olive green cloth titled in gilt to spine and front boards. Contemporary Rockwell Kent-designed bookplate to front pastedown. Minor wear. A bright, near fine copy. Published in the same year as 'A Child of The Jago' this book is part of Morrison's 'slums of London' cycle that ends with 'The Hole In The Wall' in 1902. With his gritty depictions of the moral and social compromises necessary for survival in such dreadful places, and his unwillingness to take a critical stance regarding his characters and their predicament, Morrison stands out as far superior to the standard crop of God-bothering 'urban reform through fiction' mongers that the late Victorian age spewed forth in their dozens. A lovely copy of a scarce and admirable book. Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction.

Guides Egyptiens - Le Caire et ses Environs.

Caire: Librairie Centrale, Madame Jules Barbier, Undated (1894). - A very rare, locally produced guide to Cairo. I could find no other copies in institutional collections on Copac or Worldcat, or for sale online. Undated, but there is reference to reconstruction of the railways in 1894 (pp.I-II). Also, reference to the Museum at Giza (Musee de Ghizeh) would place it no later than 1901/2 (this museum opened in 1890, and closed in 1901/2 when, owing to a shortage of space, its exhibits were moved to the purpose-built Cairo Museum of Antiquities in Tahrir Square). Original green cloth with titles blind stamped to the front (now protected in removeable plastic). Size: 9.5 x 14cm. Language: French. Pages: XXXII + 255 + 3 (Contents), with a large double-sided folding Plan of the Musee de Ghizeh (Ground Floor on the recto, First Floor on the verso). Please note: there appears to be a mistake in the pagination. The contents page lists up to page 255 (the last item being the pyramids at Matanyeh and Meidum), which is consistent with the text, which ends with this item on p255. However, the contents pages themselves are numbered 273-5. There is no sign of any sections having been removed, or any indication that there should have been anything else here. The covers are Very Good Plus with some marks and a little slight irregular fading. The binding is secure, although the paper to the hinges is cracked and these are a little tender. The pages are near fine and clean, with some sections quite heavily tanned, and others much less so. The folding plan is Very Good, neatly folded, lightly tanned and spotted, with a 4cm tear where it is bound in. CONTENTS (translated roughly from the French): General (this includes information on accommodation, transport, restaurants, Dragoman etc etc); History; Geography; Cairo and its Environs in ten Excursions; Notable buildings; Mosques; Bazaars, baths and fountains; Tombs, necropolis; Tombs of Kait Bey, Achraf Ynal; Mosques of El Ghouri, Barqouq, Achraf Barsebai, Kait Bay; Tomb of Tourab; Churches, schools, hospitals, library, administration; Excursions around Cairo (these make up over half the book (pp95-255).         The Bayadere and Other Stories

G.P. Putnam's Sons/Knickerbocker Press, New York 1894 - A superb copy , 238pp. bound in full, rich red morocco with morocco doublures and silk in an edition of 12 specially bound by the Knickerbocker Press for the father of the author. Two letters laid in from Francis H. Saltus (author's father) to Edna M. Green. Francis Saltus Saltus (as he was known) led a gang of bohemians including his brother James and a Young James Huneker whose desire for absinthe was mixed with a devotion to the erotic and sensuous. (See Yungfrau, p. 19, Ophelia, p.31, and the Awakening, P. 230.) Laid in: From Francis H. Saltus (writing at the age 103) to Miss Greene who knew his sone though she was a member of the DAR. (1) 4 p. ALS dated October 15, 1895. Refers to a waltz his son had composed in Paris in the earl 1870's and was performed there with him conducting an orchestra of 70 members. He notes of her many admirers but says none of can match his late son's literary and musical genius. (2). 2p. ALS (with original stmaped envelope) 1 1/4" closed tear at fold. He writes of her beauty and wonders why she has not since gotten married. (She did marry in 1905). The reference to Greenwich days is obscure and not futher identified. The young Saltus's influences were Poe, Gautier and Baudelaire but as Van Wyck Brooks remarked he may at one time have been among the most beautiful men but he "looked like a Greek god gone to ruin, partly as a result of absinthe which he drank to excess." Format in-4°(28x21). 1ère Edition [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

THE TRAGEDY OF PUDD'NHEAD WILSON. And the comedy THOSE EXTRAORDINARY TWINS

, 1894. 1894. With Marginal Illustrations. Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1894. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First American Edition (of "Pudd'nhead Wilson," which had appeared a few weeks earlier in Britain; first edition of "Those Extraordinary Twins," which had not yet been published in the U. K.). PUDD'NHEAD is a fascinating antebellum tale about two babies (one white and one "slightly" black) switched shortly after birth, one of whom ultimately sells his own mother into slavery in order to pay off his gambling debts. This novel has come to be regarded, along with HUCK FINN, as one of Twain's strongest statements on the subjects of miscegenation and on the degenerative impact of slavery. (Twain spun off "Those Extraordinary Twins" from the PUDD'NHEAD manuscript, when he realized that his planned comedy had turned into a tragedy.)~This copy is from the first printing, with the leaves bulking a scant 1-1/8 inches and with gatherings 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 & 8 unsigned. The printed Twain signature on the frontispiece measures 1-7/16" wide (no priority). Condition is fine and bright, with essentially no wear at all. McBride p. 170; Blanck 3442.

        The Bayadere and Other Stories

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons/Knickerbocker Press, 1894. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons/Knickerbocker Press, 1894. A superb copy , 238pp. bound in full, rich red morocco with morocco doublures and silk in an edition of 12 specially bound by the Knickerbocker Press for the father of the author. (1) 4 p.. The young Saltus's influences were Poe, Gautier and Baudelaire but as Van Wyck Brooks remarked he may at one time have been among the most beautiful men but he "looked like a Greek god gone to ruin, partly as a result of absinthe which he drank to excess.". First Edition. Octavo.
