Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1894. 314 x 240 mm. Contemporary cloth. Title evenly browned, with small bookplate tipped to it; bookplate also on front pastedown. Presentation Copy, inscribed (probably by a publisher's clerk) on the front free endpaper: "Avec les compliments de l'Auteur."

First Separate Edition of Michelson's paper describing his and Edward Morley's experimental determination of the length of the international meter bar in terms of wave-lengths of cadmium light, providing thereby a reproducible standard. "Adapting his refractometer as a comparator for lengths that could be reduced through spectroscopy and interferometric techniques to nonmaterial standards of length, Michelson found in 1892-93 that the Paris meter bar was equal to 1,553,163.5 wavelengths of the red cadmium line. So elegant were the success and precision of this project that Michelson became internationally famous" (DSB).

In 1907 Michelson, "the man who taught the world to measure," became the first American to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences, receiving the physics prize for his "optical instruments of precision and the spectroscopic and metrological investigations which he carried out by means of them" (Weber, Pioneers of Science [2nd ed.], p. 31). Michelson is remembered today chiefly for the "Michelson-Morley experiment" (1887), an attempt to measure the relative velocity through which the earth moves through the hypothetical "luminiferous ether"-primarily because of the influence this had on the development of relativity theory. It is probable, however, that the above work of 1894 was also highly valued by the Nobel committee in 1907.

Our sources do not show a separate English-language edition of Michelson's Determination experimentale de la valeur du metre, nor do they indicate where, if ever, the English-language version was published. Since Michelson performed his measurements in Paris, it is reasonable to assume that his paper appeared first in French. Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge (Lepidoptera Exotica).

Later brown cloth, spines with gilt lettering (and:) HUEBNER, J. & GEYER, C. Zuträge zur Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge bestehend in Bekundigung einzelner Fliegmuster neuer oder rarer nichteuropäischer Gattungen. Kirby. Bruxelles, V. Verteneuil & L. Desmet, 1908-1912. 1 volume bound in 2. Large-4to (315 x 238mm) pp. (4), ii, 100, (2), with 172 hand-coloured lithographed plates. Later brown cloth, spines with gilt lettering Rare complete set of this beautifully handcoloured new edition of one of the finest and most important works on exotic butterflies, which was edited in a very limited edition. It comprises Hübner's complete works on exotic butterflies, the 'Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge' published from 1806-24 and his 'Zuträge zur Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge' published from 1818-37, of which the last part was published by Geyer. Both these two original works are extremely rare and we have not offered copies since many decades. The new edition of these works on exotic butterflies books by Wystman and Kirby is superbly produced. The plates are printed on thick, wove paper and exquisitely handcoloured. Also this edition is a great rarity and the number of copies produced minute. Wystman published 3 issues, one with German text, one with English text and one with French text. Probably no more than 50 copies were published. Mr. Kirby says "In writing letter press to Hübner's 'Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge', I have paid special attention to the correct identification of the species figured, and in one or two cases I have found it necessary to propose new names. I have not given descriptions, but sufficient synonymy and explanations to bring Hübner's plates into range with later publication" (Entomological Society News 1911). Pour le coloris, je me suis assuré le concours de quatre artistes, spécialistes dans ce travail" (From the printed wrappers)./Very little is known about Huebner's life. The rarity of his works is due to the great upheavel caused by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars and the long period of publication. Huebner was a man of modest means, more or less tied to his native town Augsburg. He was a designer in one of the leading cotton factories of the town. His true love and inclination were Lepidoptera. He published a number of beautifully illustrated iconographies on the subject which he published for his own account and he drew and engraved all the illustrations himself. Rara p. 244). A very nice uniformly bound set.//See Horn & Schenkling 10905 & 10908 for the original edition and Nissen ZBI, 2040 & 2041 for the original edition as well as the present issue.

        Trilby

London - Harper's Monthly Magazine 1894 - A fantastic find for fans of du Maurier, the original Harper's Monthly serialisation of Trilby bound from the parts into a finely bound volume. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt lettering. This is a collection of the first printed serial appearances of Trilby extracted from Harper's Monthly Magazines and bound as one complete work. High quality paper has been laid down covering superfluous text to make for a continuous narrative. With the armorial nameplate of S. F. Widdrington to the front pastedown. George Louis Palmella Busson du Maurier, 1834 1896, was a French-born British cartoonist and author. Triby is du Maurier's second work. Shallcross Fitzherbert Jacson was the nephew of Samuel Edward Widdrington (17871856) the writer on Spain. He inherited his estates and name. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The front hinge is starting but still firm. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild rubbing. Internally the pages are generally bright with light background foxing, prominent to the endpapers, and handling marks. Overall the condition is very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        TRILBY : Original Edition

NY: Harper & Brothers, 1894. From flyleaf, in ink: "This is TRILBY, original version, but when published in book form the paragraph on page 577 to page 578 was changed to suit the sensibilities of writer who was furious at being described in the character of Joe Sibley". This was neatly bound in 3/4 leather with raised bands, from the original 1894 Harper series articles, with extraneous material being covered with quality watermarked paper. All edges gilt. ... The major flaw is that the front cover is loose, and while a relatively simple repair, due to the great value of this volume, this must be left to the buyer. Light bumping to spine ends, two pages noted with minor marginalia. Without loose board would rate G+ or better. Please see or request pic or additional info.. Cloth. First Edition. Cloth. Fair/No Jacket. Illus. by Engravings. 8vo - 7¾" - 9¾" Tall.
