A fine copy with only the very lightest aging, very bright, unusually so. The only novel by Astor.         The Egyptian Book of the Dead. The Most Ancient and the Most Important of the Extant Religious Texts of Ancient Egypt, with various chapters on its history, symbolism, etc, etc. Together with a translation, revised as to certain details of M Paul Pierret

New York: G P Putnam's Sons, 1894 vi+186 pages with 165 plates (many folding), charts, illustrations. Folio (14 1/4" x 11 3/4") issued in original green publisher's cloth with gilt lettering and illustrated front cover. First edition.Translated and edited by Charles Davis from the French edition of Paul Pierret Le Livre Des Morts Des Anciens Égyptiens (1882) work and revised with additional knowledge gained since the publication of Pierret's work. Excellent and valuable preliminary chapters are give on the Mythology and Religion of Primitive Peoples; The Egyptian Pantheon, with illustrations of some of the important deities; The Mythology of Ancient Egyptians; and a historical and critical introduction to the book.'The Book of the Dead' is the common name for the ancient Egyptian funerary text known as 'The Book of Coming '[or 'Going']' Forth By Day'. The book of the dead was a description of the ancient Egyptian conception of the afterlife and a collection of hymns, spells, and instructions to allow the deceased to pass through obstacles in the afterlife. The book of the dead was most commonly written on a papyrus scroll and placed in the coffin or burial chamber of the deceased. The name "Book of the Dead" was the invention of the German Egyptologist Karl Richard Lepsius, who published a selection of the texts in 1842. When it was first discovered, the book of the dead was thought to be an ancient Egyptian Bible. But unlike the Bible, The Book of the Dead does not set forth religious tenets and was not considered by the ancient Egyptians to be the product of divine revelation, which allowed the content of the book of the dead to change over time. The Book of the Dead was thus the product of a long process of evolution from the Pyramid texts of the Old Kingdom to the Coffin Texts of the Middle Kingdom. About one-third of the chapters in The Book of the Dead are derived from the Coffin Texts. The Book of the Dead itself was adapted to The Book of Breathings in the Late Period, but remained popular in its own right until the Roman period.Condition:Spine repaired, corners refurbished, edges rubbed, new end papers, new end papers, some chips to tile repaired\ else a very good copy. A translation of LA FIN DU MONDE, Flammarion's best and most imaginative novel, a panoramic view of humanity from the twenty-fifth century to the far future, Stapledonian in scope. "A work of remarkable scope and vision, one of the earliest and most ambitious cosmic histories, certainly worth reading, if only as a historical document. Of considerable historical importance, since it was probably read and absorbed by authors as diverse as W. H. Hodgson and Olaf Stapledon." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 778. LA FIN DU MONDE is Flammarion's "boldest scientific romance ... an epic of the future. Although it is as much essay as story, this is a notable work, akin to H. G. Wells's THE TIME MACHINE (1895) and William Hope Hodgson's THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND (1908) in presenting a striking vision of the end of the world." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 432.

Letters . .. Edited by Mabel Loomis Todd

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1894. First edition. 2 vols., Small 8vo. Engraved frontispieces (portrait in vol. I; Dickinson home in vol. II), 3 facsimile letters; [iv], xii, 228; [viii], 229-454 pp. Original green buckram, covers and spines stamped in gilt with Indian pipes motif (BAL's variant 1). Spine of volume I darkened with some loss of gilt, light shelfwear. Very good. Volume II supplied from another set, near fine. In custom morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. BAL 4660; Myerson A3.1.a (notes only three copies inscribed by Todd). Provenance: A.J. Lyman (his ownership inscription to flyleaf, "A.J. Lyman / Brooklyn New York," and presentation inscription from editor on half-title) . Volume I INSCRIBED to Mabel Loomis Todd's confidant and perhaps the first independent reader of the proofs of the LETTERS, Albert Josiah Lyman: "To Dr. Lyman / from /Mabel Loomis Todd / Amherst, / 17 Decr 1894." Todd met Lyman, minister of the South Congregational Church of Brooklyn, in February of 1894 while on a lecture tour. In a letter, dated 13 February 1894, to her ailing lover Austin Dickinson, Todd mentions with delight that "I have had an independent literary judgement on the proof of the LETTERS this morning which fills me with joy." The favorable judgement was pronounced by Lyman, who Longsworth describes as "Handsome, sympathetic, liberal in his views, and a clergyman of great pastoral power ..." (AUSTIN AND MABEL, p. 380n). After Austin Dickinson's death, "Dr. Lyman was the one [Todd] confided in and from whom she received remarkable and unorthodox consolation" (ibid). In January, 1894, Todd sent proofs of the LETTERS to every correspondent who allowed letters from Dickinson to be published (Meyerson, p. 34), and it is likely that Lyman was the first independent critic of the work. No one played a more crucial part in the early acceptance of Dickinson as a major American poet than Mabel Loomis Todd. She was the first posthumous steward of Dickinson's work, seeing the poems and letters into print for the first time. Meyerson notes only three copies of the LETTERS inscribed by Todd, all dated December, 1894. No significant inscribed copies of the LETTERS have appeared at auction in the last 30 years
