Signed Cabinet Photograph - dated during "a quite wonderful intermezzo of the loveliest of snow landscapes in the middle of summer"

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Cabinet photograph, signed by the German romantic composer and pianist. Sepia-tone, a three-quarters portrait of the famous composer shown seated on a rustic wooden bench in this 1894 photograph by Rudolf Krziwanek, signed in the upper blank area of the image in dark brown ink, "Johannes Brahms / 25/5 95."  10.5 x 15 cm [4.2 x 5.8 inches]. The lower mount trimmed, archivally matted and set under UV plexiglass in a period red crushed velvet frame. Overall in fine condition.<br style="">The composer has inscribed while summering in Bad Ischl in 1895, a year which would be the first since 1872 that he did not release any compositions.  "The lure of Bad Ischl for Brahms was the rather paradoxical combination of the company that he found there and the seclusion that the remote mountain town provided.  The atmosphere of the spa provided the sociability that his melancholy and lonely personality craved as well as the prospect of romantic dalliances.  Although he did not share Strauss's enthusiasm for the sometimes incessant rain and storms, he came to accept the weather and even reveled in a heavy snowfall at the end of May 1895: 'the quite wonderful intermezzo of the loveliest of snow landscapes in the middle of summer.'"  (Ian C. Bradley, "Water Music," p. 138)<br>The letter quoted here was penned to his friend Eusebius Mandyczewski, Romanian musicologist, composer, conductor, on the day following the present example of the composer's signature.  Brahms - though an autograph collector himself - disliked the notion of his signature being collected. He rarely signed photographs (and if so, usually on the verso), signed many letters with his initials only, and the present fully signed example is a rarity indeed.

        H.M.S. "Porpoise" China.

(circa1894).. Personal record of ships from the British Royal Navy, Japanese Imperial Navy and the Chinese Beiyang Navy. A unique record in a small notebook compiled by H.C. Goslin measuring 14.8 x 10.5cm contains 26 small black and white albumen photographs showing ships and 35 hand coloured Japanese albumen photographs (3 loosely inserted, one damaged with a little loss along left edge) showing Japanese scenes and people. On the page facing the photographs of the ships H.C. Goslin has handwritten details about each ship including its performance and armament specifications, strengths and weaknesses. Most photographs measure approximately 13.5 x 9.5cm. Unpaginated [130pp]. Upper cover and first photograph damp stained, some of the Japanese photographs are a little faded causing the red colouring to show more prominently but overall the photographs are in reasonably good condition. Wrappers damp damaged and torn with loss particularly on spine. Damp staining has significantly affected the first photograph and text opposite with a little occasional staining on a few other leaves not affecting the photographs. Ships included are H.M.S. Porpoise 1894 (two photographs one considerably damp damaged); H.M.S. Archer 1894; H.M.S. Imperieuse 1893; H.M.S. Centurion 1894; Matsushima - 2 photographs; Japanese Navy ships: Kongo; Akitsushima; Takow; Yoshino; Naniwa; Yamato; Itsuksushima; Hashidate; Chiyoda; Fuso 2 images of which one has the photograph reversed; and photographs of the then newly European built Chinese naval vessels from the Beiyang Fleet: Ting Yuen; Lai Yuen; Chen Yuen; E Yuen; Russian Gunboat; H.M.S. Mercury; H.M.S. Plover; H.M.S. Servern. There are also handwritten details of a further 4 Japanese ships without accompanying photographs. H.M.S. Archer was serving on the China Station in 1894 when Japanese forces surrounded Seoul. A landing party was sent to protect the British Consul-General after he was threatened by the Japanese forces. Between 7 September 1900 until 5 December 1903 H.M.S. Archer served on the Australia Station. H.M.S. Imperieuse served on the Pacific Station 1896 - 1899. H.M.S. Centurion was the flagship of the China Station between 1894 and 1905. During this period she supported the Allied Forces during the Boxer Rebellion. A very interesting and unique personal record of ships that were inhabited the world of this British sailor. As well as documenting British ships serving in East Asia in the last years of the 19th century interestingly H.C. Goslin records in this notebook ships from both the Japanese Navy and ill-fated Chinese Beiyang Navy at the time. .

Prachtausgabe: Dekorative Original-Halbledereinbände mit reicher Rückenvergoldung & roten Rückenschildern. Dreiseitig roter Buchschnitt. Format 27 x 19 cm.         The Book of Antelopes.

4to. 4 vols. Original green cloth, gilt vignette of antelope to uppers, gilt rules to boards, spines with gilt rules and lettering; pp. xxxv 220, v 194, v 245, v 242, 100 hand coloured lithographs after J. Smit and J. Wolf, 121 text illustrations; spines a little darkened, repair to one text page in vol I, otherwise very good, plates very clean. First edition. Scarce. This great work on antelopes was originally the project of Sir Victor Brook (1843 - 1891), the father of Viscount Alanbrooke and a serious big game hunter and naturalist. He supervised the production of the beautiful plates by Smit and Wolf but died of pneumonia, aged only 48, before the book could be completed. The writing of the text was taken over by Sclater, then Secretary of the Zoological Society of London, who wrote the main text, and Thomas, curator at the British Museum of Natural History, who provided the scientific descriptions. The result was a triumph both artistically and scientifically: "The book of Antelopes is a timely work and it is matter for congratulation that the colored plates prepared under the supervision of the late Sir Victor Brook more than twenty years ago are finally given to the public accompanied by such authoritative letter press" (Science, New Series, Vol 3, No. 67, April 10 1896, p. 566). The work's value partly resides in its recording of species now lost to us, hence the reviewer's appreciation of its timeliness: "... it is sad to feel that many species are on the road to rapid extinction" (Ibid.). Nissen 3784; Wood p. 558.

In de Muizenwereld: een nieuwe vertelling

H.J.W. Becht 1894 - H.J.W. Becht, Amsterdam. 1894. True first edition, first printing. Only copy available globally, released in a very small printing. his wonderfully illustrated fantasy &#150; in which two children shrink to mouse size &#150; is notable for its fine drawings, mostly of anthropomorphic mice, by the Dutch artist Ludwig Willem Reymert Wenckebach (1860-1937). Wenckebach&#146;s books for children, regarded as pioneering, include the superb Notenkraker en Muizenkoning (The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, 1898), with rich, vibrant chromolithographic plates printed in eleven colours. The artist seems especially to have enjoyed drawing mice &#150; which feature in both The Nutcracker and In Mouse-Land. The Wolfsonian Library (Florida) &#150; renowned for its collection of Dutch Nieuwe Kunst (New Art) book bindings, calendars, and illustrations from the 1890s to 1920s &#150; notes that Wenckebach was &#147;a talented and prolific artist very well represented in the Wolfsonian collection, with more than 125 items . Most of the book bindings Wenckebach designed are typical of that era, when nature served as inspiration for all that was beautiful in art. Plants, flowers, orchids, butterflies and the curvilinear female form adorn most of the bindings he designed. But Wenckebach was also a talented graphic artist, [providing] illustrations for many children&#146;s books. This, of course, was the age when children&#146;s books did not shy away from vivid (and even gruesome) images that modern publishers generally eschew in books aimed at a juvenile audience. Wenckebach&#146;s images of the Nutcracker, for example, are both profoundly moving and disturbing.&#148; In de Muizenwereld was first published in 1894, complete with music for keyboard, integrated into the text. This is the first edition without music &#150; featuring just the story and illustrations. An English-language version was published by J. Curwen (London) in 1910. A delightful work, very scarce in the undated first edition; I can see no other copy currently for sale online. Condition Book complete and intact. Light creasing, finger-marking and smudging to margins, three or four short closed tears to upper/lower gutters, slight foxing around stitches, occasional foxing elsewhere, one spread with staining to upper margin, two tiny stains elsewhere, five internal hinges re-glued, first (blank) page with previous owner&#146;s name in ink, last (blank) page with small water-mark to upper edge. Endpapers plus first and last page with browning/offsetting, a little foxing and soiling; front endpapers with original bookseller&#146;s label, trace of bookseller&#146;s pencilled notes (erased); pastedowns with slight bubbling; rear endpaper hinge with small tear to foot. Top of page block with small water-mark. Binding a little loose. Boards and spine with soiling, staining, scratching and marks as shown, bumping, rubbing and wear to extremities, slight fraying to corners; spine with small tears to head and foot. The library of a Spanish Bibliophile, 20 mars 2013, Londres). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Gismonda. Theatre de la Renaissance.

Poster for Sarah Bernhardt's appearance in "Gismonda" at the Théâtre de la Renaissance. Paris:Lemercier 1894. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1896. Plate no. 27.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

"In his earlier books Bierbower had written about Christian ethics, suggesting in one that Christ was a Socialist. Racial memory plays an important role in this attempt to reconcile new theories with traditional beliefs. An oncoming glacier forced the 'Missing Link' from his Edenic home in the North, while snakes were the obvious enemies of the apemen and so became symbolic of evil. Equally important, Bierbower showed the first steps the apemen took in their evolution toward true mankind. In doing so, he helped to establish the main storyline for most of the novels dealing with prehistoric man." - Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 072. Bierbower "suggests the Ice Age as the effective cause of the Missing Link's expulsion from the Garden of Eden, and that proto-men's struggles with snakes were the reason the Serpent has subsequently been symbolized as Evil." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, p. 118.         Autograph Letter Signed to George Bernard Shaw, on "Tour 1894" letterhead of the Henry Irving and Ellen Terry theater company stationery, n.p., Sept. 25, 1894

      - Friendships and rivalries in the British theater world of the 1890s show through in our letter by Stoker to fellow Irish author and playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) whom he addresses as "My Dear Shaw." "[Johnny] Toole goes to Burg for the days Thursday Friday & Sat., this week - [Henry] Irving wants me to look after him. He will be at the Derby Hotel. Here is his picture [not included] so that you know him." He signs in full, "Bram Stoker." The stationery is soiled especially on verso and upper margin, with rust stain from clip on upper left edge. Tear above margin fold not affecting text. Stoker was the personal secretary to actor and theater producer Henry Irving at the time of this writing. The character of Count Dracula may have been based on Henry Irving. In his iconic horror story, Stoker incorporated his experience at Irving's Lyceum Theater by referencing plays which Irving put on there in the 1890's and 90's. According to "Bram Stoker and the Creation of Dracula," by Christopher Frayling, some of Irving's plays included, "a misquotation from Hamlet which introduces Harker's waking nightmare and which Irving always insisted on including in his version of the tragedy: 'My tablets! quick, my tablets! 'Tis meet that I put it down'." In a review, George Bernard Shaw chided, "performing Hamlet with the part of Hamlet omitted'." Through Stoker's long relationship with Irving, Stoker became involved in London's high society, meeting many people including Hall Caine, who became one of Stoker's closest friends and to whom he dedicated "Dracula." Stoker was the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre from 1878-1898, a theater which Irving owned. Also an actor, Irving appeared at the Lyceum, usually with actress Ellen Terry. When Irving took over the management of the theater in 1878, and hired Stoker, he also hired actress Ellen Terry as the company's leading lady - a partnership that lasted 25 years. Stoker and Ellen Terry were both under Henry Irving's sway and had a bond with one another. Since Terry and Shaw had a different kind of bond, it would be probable that Stoker met Shaw at various times over the course of his life. As Henry Irving's business manager, Stoker wrote many of Irving's letters including letters to Shaw which begin as ours does. George Bernard Shaw was a journalist, book reviewer, art and theatre critic who was just beginning to see success in his playwriting. His reviews of Henry Irving and the theatre productions at Irving's Lyceum theatre were quite disparaging. Shaw criticized Irving's productions almost to the point of ridicule but not Irving himself as an actor. Irving kept mostly silent about this, but then seemed to get his revenge when Shaw sent him "The Man of Destiny" to produce. Irving paid him a retainer, but never produced the play. Our research indicated that Shaw told Ellen Terry that a production by Irving would establish Shaw. Shaw was outraged when Irving refused to produce the play; hence Irving's revenge. Jealousy may have also played a part in the combative relationship between Shaw and Irving. George Bernard Shaw was enamored with Ellen Terry and jealous of Irving's connection to her which was both professional and personal. Our research shows that Shaw wanted Terry in his own plays and possibly as a love interest. The two of them did have a romance of sorts, what Shaw called a "paper courtship" which began in the 1890s. It was a long, flirtatious correspondence, but mostly likely a relationship only on paper. Other letters are known, some published, from Stoker to Shaw, with Stoker writing on behalf of Irving. This letter was written before the feud between Irving and Shaw, and Stoker's words of welcome on behalf of Irving are surprising given their future. We have not found our letter to be published. John Toole met Henry Irving when they acted together in 1857 in a summer tour in John Poole's farce "Paul Pry." They remained friends for the rest of their lives. In 1879, To
