The Judicial Practice of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope and of

1893. Van Zyl (van Zijl), C[aspar] H[endrik]. [1842-1913]. The Judicial Practice of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, And of South Africa Generally, With Suitable and Copious Practical Forms Subjoined to and Illustrating the Practice of the Several Subjects Treated of. Cape Town: J.C. Juta, 1893. xvi, 674 pp. Original cloth, blind frames to boards, gilt title to spine. Moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, chipping to head of spine, hinges cracked but secure, internally clean. Ex-library. Location label to spine, small stamp to title page. A solid copy of a scarce title. * First edition. This pioneering commentary on Roman-Dutch law in force in South Africa went through four editions by 1931. "This goodly volume, at once of Theory and of Practice, is... the first attempt on the part of any member of the Legal Profession in South Africa to give an account of the Theory and Practice prevailing in our South African Colonies. (...) Mr. Van Zyl is undoubtedly happy in his choice of a subject, and there can be no doubt of the opportuneness of his work. We are glad to be able to say that we think Mr. Van Zyl is no less happy in his general treatment of his subject than in his conception of the book which it seemed to him was wanted. That his treatise will fill what was clearly a want in Colonial Legal Literature we cannot doubt, nor can we doubt that it will be valuable alike to the Practitioner in Privy Council Appeals, and to the Legal Profession at the Cape.": Law Magazine and Law Review (Fifth Series) 19 (1893-94) 93. Gothic Architecture: A Lecture for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society

Kelmscott Press, 1893. 1st edition. Hardcover. Publisher's quarter holland over blue-grey boards, in excellent condition with no foxing, text printed in black with red shoulder headings, in Morris's Golden type. The first Kelmscott Press book to be printed in 16mo. The hand-made pages and illustrations are also in excellent condition. The book appeared in three editions totalling 1500 copies - this copy is from the very first issue of 500, and contains two notable typographical misprints, namely 'gilds' for 'guilds' in the shoulder heading on page 41 and 'Van Eyk' for 'Van Eyck' in the text on page 45. Furthermore, this particular copy is unique on account of the inscription on the front endpaper, which reads 'For Leslie M. Cockerell from S.C.C, Oct 24th 1893' - this is Sydney Cockerell, later to be knighted, and then aged 26, who acted as private secretary to William Morris, and was at the administrative heart of a great deal of the work of the Kelmscott Press. A very nice example of this rare work, with a splendid Arts & Crafts association.

Bookseller's ticket of The Galignani library, Paris and Nice to the front pastedown. 2 folding city plans - St. Petersburg and Moscow - two folding maps, Finland and the large travelling map of Russia in an end-pocket , 3 full-page floor-plans - Hermitage picture galleries, the Kremlin, and the Cathedral of the Assumption. Just a little rubbed, the spine sunned, a few very minor splits to the folds of the maps, repaired verso with archival tape, a very good copy indeed. Fifth edition, revised, this title first published 1865. Delayed due to the "unexpectedly rapid exhaustion" (Preface) of the previous edition of 1887 - which was "published at the time of the Russo-Turkish War" (Lister) - this edition was revised to take account of the "strong stimulus to the tourist traffic" given by "the continual extension of Railways … the improvement of accommodation at Hotels, and generally the greater facilities afforded to travellers." A very good copy of the 22pp Phrase Book of the Use of Travellers in Russia, 1899, in the end-pocket with the map.

        O^SHU^ SANSUI KISHO^

1893. Very Good. [EHON] Takashima HOKKAI, artist. OSHU SANSUI KISHO. Tokyo: Toyodo, Meiji 26 [1893]. 2 vols., 24.5 x 18 cm, orihon album, in silk over stiff paper covers, printed paper title label. Hokkai (1850-1931) was an important landscape artist (see Roberts, p.170). Neither Hokkai nor any of his works appear in any of the standard ehon references in English, which is odd considering the quality of this book and his eminence in Japan. The OSHU consists of a series of 40 double page color landscape woodcuts of France, Italy and Scotland. The emphasis is upon the mountains and hillsides, in short the nature of Europe, not its cities. A remarkable and very unusual work. Overall in fine condition with original fukuro dustwrapper and very good or better impressions. With Hokkai's red fish-shaped seals.

London: Rowland Ward and Co. Ltd, , 1893. Being the Narrative of the Last Eleven Years Spent by the Author on the Zambesi and it's Tributaries; with an Account of the Colonisation of Mashunaland and the Progress of the Gold Industry in that Land. Octavo. Original golden-tan cloth, title in black to the spine together with gilt figure of a Mashukulumbwi warrior in gilt, gilt block of two lions to the upper board, dark blue surface paper endpapers. Portrait frontispiece and 22 other plates, numerous illustrations to the text, folding coloured map at the rear. A little rubbed and soiled, spine crumpled head and tail, a couple of small nicks, but the hinges sound, some mild foxing, tape marks verso of the front free endpaper, a very good copy in the cloth. First Edition. This copy inscribed on the half-title; "To my friend Col. J. C. Russell with the kind regards and best wishes of the Author, F. C. Selous, Barrymore House, Wargrave, Berks., Aug. 25th 1893". Also, now loose, but formerly tipped-in, a 4-page autograph letter signed from Selous to Russell, explaining his change of plans owing to the "serious news from Matabeleland", now rather than going to America, Selous will "sail tomorrow by the Drummond Castle for South Africa. I am going entirely on my own hook, and have nothing to do with the B. S. A. Company, because I consider it my duty to lend a hand to my countrymen in Mashunaland at a time when every rifle may possibly be necessary to save the country from destruction". The recipient, Major-General John Cecil Russell, 12th Royal Hussars - his large, handsome bookplate to the front pastedown - had served in Africa during the Ashanti War, capture of Kumasi; the Kafir War, Ninth Frontier War, of 1878-9 in the operations against Sekukuni; and Zulu War, 1879, present at Zlobane and Kambula. The present work covers "eleven years of exploration, work and sport in the 1880s and 1890s, Selous describes numerous adventures with lions and leopards, particularly near the Zambezi, Zweswi, and Manyami rivers, with additional sport after rhinoceros, eland, and hartebeest… He concludes with a chapter on rifles, and another reflecting earlier sporting adventures after elephant, buffalo, and others" (Czech). Having left the service of the British South Africa Company in 1894 Selous made his name as an expert guide to English and American hunters in Africa, attracting the interest of Roosevelt whom he accompanied on his trip to East Africa in 1909. "When the First World War broke out in 1914, Selous immediately offered himself for active service; persevering, despite repeated rejections on account of his age, he was ultimately accepted for duty in German East Africa, and left England in the spring of 1915…. He was killed in action at the head of his company, near Kisaki, close to the Rufiji River, Tanganyika, on 4 January 1917, aged sixty-five, and was buried in Tanganyika within the boundaries of the game park that now bears his name. The dramatic circumstances of his death, and the part he played in the establishment of colonial Rhodesia, conferred lasting fame on Selous. Though celebrated as a hunter, he was the first to deprecate his reputation as the 'Mighty Nimrod'. Many had shot more beasts with greater skill; his prowess consisted in his ability to translate his adventures into prose eagerly consumed by late-Victorian readers" (ODNB). Uncommon inscribed, and here with a letter of significant content from one Old Africa Hand to another.

Lady Windermere's Fan: A Play About a Good Woman

London: Elkin Mathews & John Lane at the sign of The Bodley Head. PUBLISHING DETAILS: True first edition of this much sought after Oscar Wilde title, published by Elkin Mathew & John Lane at the sign of The Bodley Head in London in 1893. 132 pages, uncut to the fore and bottom edges, plus 12 page publisher's catalogue. Size; 22 x 16 cms (8.5" x 6.5"). Weight; 340g (12 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate this as good only. The original pink cloth covers, with gilt embossed leaf motifs, are moderately age-soiled and with a little blistering but otherwise sound, with bruised extremities and a small tear to the cloth at the foot of the spine to the rear (see photos). The binding remains tight and secure throughout. The text is generally clean and bright with just a few light marks and even age-toning. There front free endpaper is lacking and there is a faint impression of an old pencilled inscription on the front pastedown. Overall, this remains a tidy and very presentable copy of this rare first edition, offered at a greatly reduced price to reflect its modest faults. THE BOOK: Lady Windermere's Fan, A Play About a Good Woman is a four-act comedy first produced 22 February 1892 at the St James's Theatre in London prior to its publication in 1893. Like many of Wilde's comedies, it bitingly satirizes the morals of Victorian society, particularly marriage. The story concerns Lady Windermere, who discovers that her husband may be having an affair with another woman. She confronts her husband but he instead invites the other woman, Mrs Erlynne, to his wife's birthday ball. Angered by her husband's unfaithfulness, Lady Windermere leaves her husband for another lover. After discovering what has transpired, Mrs Erlynne follows Lady Windermere and attempts to persuade her to return to her husband and in the course of this, Mrs Erlynne is discovered in a compromising position. It is then revealed Mrs Erlynne is Lady Windermere's mother, who abandoned her family twenty years before the time the play is set. Mrs Erlynne sacrifices herself and her reputation in order to save her daughter's marriage. The best known line of the play sums up the central theme: "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars". Wilde's huge popularity as a playwright began with the production of Lady Windermere's Fan. (Source: Wikipedia) . Good. Decorative Cloth. 1st Edition. 1893. 22 x 16 Cms (8.5" x 6.5").

La Liro de la Esperantistoj. Kolekto da Versajoj en la Lingvo internacia "Esperanto". [i.e. The Esperantist's Lyre].

Nurnberg, Tümmel, 1893. Bound in a lovely, a bit later half calf with gilding to spine. Old owner's name to front free end-paper (John Lundgren). Two leaves inserted after the last printed poem, before the contents-leaves, One leaf with a neatly hand-written 8-verse (4 lines to each verse) poem entitled "Vespero. de l'sveda poeto Nikander". At the end: "Tradukis Sig. Agrell". The other inserted leaf blank. A lovely, clean, and fresh copy.. Scarce first edition of the first Esperanto anthology, being the first published work with poetry in Esperanto. This publication is of the utmost importance to the communal language Esperanto and constitutes the official baptism of Esperanto poets. As Carlo Minnaja points out in "Un secolo di traduzioni letterarie dall'italiano in esperanto", even if the format of this small book is modest, "it's content is anything but insignificant": It contains 110 poems, by 24 different authors. Many of the poems are translated from German and Russian, but many are from numerous other languages: English, Polish, Arab, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Italian, Czech. And then there are 27 original Esperanto-poems, by 12 different authors of various languages and countries. Some of the contributors are famous poets, some are relatively well known, and some again are completely unknown, "but the mere creation of the work is in itself a great success: whoever would have this anthology in his hands, would be able to enjoy the jewels not so widely known in Europe. The propagandist significance of even a small work of this kind was quite clear: Esperanto is a language like the others, it has the potential of its own original literature, and through Esperanto one can approach literature that has only been sparsely translated into other languages that are more widely communicated. The international language thus fulfills one of its primary tasks, namely to make known, to a larger audience and on an equal footing, the literary value of populations relegated to the margins of European culture, because their language is not widespread." (Minnaja; own translation from Italian). The collection is made by the Polish Esperanto-pioneer Antoni Grabowski (1857-1921), a skilled chemical engineer. His publications were immensely important in turning Esperanto into a language of literature. Already as a student, Grabowski had shown considerable literary and linguistic abilities. Speaking 10 different languages and passively mastering another 15, he was a true polyglot. He soon became interested in the idea of a universal language and learned Volapük. But after having visited the inventor of Volapük, Johann Schleyer, and noted that even he was unable to speak it fluently and that the two had to communicate in German, Grabowski realized that Volapük was unsuitable as an everyday language. He did not, however, lose his interest in the idea of an international planned language. In 1887 he studied the booklet "Dr. Esperanto's International Language: Introduction & Complete Grammar", published in the same year by Ludwik L. Zamenhof, which lined out Zamenhof's ambitious language project which was soon to become known by the name "Esperanto". Impressed by the transparent structure of Esperanto and by its capacity for expression which, he thought, could be picked up astonishingly quickly, Grabowski traveled to Warsaw to visit Zamenhof, where the two held the first oral conversation in Esperanto. At that time, Esperanto had begun its initial transformation into a universal, fully functional language, and Grabowski understood the important influence of literature on the development of languages, especially for Esperanto at this point. As early as 1888 he published his translation of Pushkin's "The Snowstorm", and in 1889 his translation of Goethe's "Die Geschwister".During the early 1890'ies, Grabowski, however, was still not satisfied with the pace of the spread of Esperanto and he did what he could to speed up the process. In 1893 he published the first anthology of poetry in Esperanto, "The Esperantist's Lyre", a work that more than any other showed what this universal language was capable of. Grabowski became a longstanding president of the Warsaw Esperanto Society, founded in 1904, and of the Polish Esperanto Society, founded in 1908. In the same year he became director of the Grammar section of the Esperanto Academy. He published articles and gave lectures on Esperanto and organized Esperanto language courses.Per Sigurd Agrell (1881 - 1937) was a Swedish poet, runologist, and professor of Slavic languages. He began his poetic career at the age of 16, translating and writing poetry of his own, which was published in the Esperanto periodical " Lingvo internacia" (which began publication in Uppsala in 1895).
