The Celtic Twilight. Men and Women, Dhouls and Faeries

London: Lawrence and Bullen, 1893 Book. Illus. by Jack Butler Yeats. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. [frontispiece] xii, pp 212 An unopened and therefore unread first edition of Yeats' The Celtic Twilight in its original glassine dustwrapper as issued by the publishers Lawrence and Bullen. The book is near fine in condition with bright olive green ribbed cloth covered boards that have been protected by the glassine wrapper. The binding conforms to the description by Yeat's bibliographer Allan Wade of the second state, with the publisher's name in lower case at the foot of the spine. Internally the first and last gatherings, only, have been opened with the whole of the text untouched. There is light foxing to the first blank and along the top edge of the book, otherwise the book is absolutely fine. The glassine wrapper, a remarkable survival, has a little triangular loss at the foot of the front panel near the foreedge and is between good and very good in condition. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book..

Old Rabbit The Voodoo and Other Sorcerers

1893. first edition. With Ten Illustrations by Louis Wain[WAIN, Louis, illustrator]. OWEN, Juliette A, illustrator. OWEN, Mary Alicia. Old Rabbit The Voodoo and Other Sorcerers… Introduction by Charles Godfrey Leland. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1893. First edition. Octavo. 7 5/8 x 5 1/8 inches; 195 x 130 mm.). xvi, 310, [1 imprint], [1 blank] pp. Frontispiece and 57 line drawings in the text of which several are full-page. Ten of the drawings are signed by Louis Wain. Publishers light blue cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in colors, spine lettered in gilt and black, partially uncut. Spine slightly faded, a few leaves poorly opened at top edge, otherwise a near fine copy. The illustrations by Louis Wain are interesting but very different to his usual 'feline' style.Mary Alicia Owen (1850?–1935) was a folklore collector of Missouri who compiled several works of local legend and voodoo. She was born in a family of Saint Joseph, Missouri and lived with her two sisters, Luella and Juliette, both of whom were noted authors. She became inspired to record the disappearing folk tales after reading Algonquin Legends of New England, beginning a correspondence with Charles Godfrey Leland. Her earliest publication was Old Rabbit the Voodoo, and other Sorcerers, printed with an introduction by Leland, which was favourably reviewed in the English journal Folk-Lore; the reviewer, E. S. Hartland, dismisses Leland's request for consideration as a first work and says of it, "From the first page to the last there is not a dull page...". Her researches and fieldwork had already been reported in a paper she read before the 1891 "Second International Folk-Congress" in London, which was printed in the Transactions of the conference as "Among the Voodoos". Her principal work was Voodoo tales as told among the Negroes of the southwest [the title given to the first American edition of Old Rabbit The Voodoo and Other Sorcerers]. Owen gave long service to The Missouri Folklore Society, serving as its President until the year of her death.

Journal of the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1891

Adelaide: House of Assembly, 1893. Folio, with two large colour folding maps; a very good copy, uncut in recent cloth. One of only 750 copies published: this rare printing is not recorded by Ferguson. Sir Thomas Elder, who had earlier financed the first great desert journey of Ernest Giles, in 1891 fitted out the expedition of David Lindsay, the celebrated Northern Territory explorer and surveyor general. In 1883 Lindsay had led an expedition into Arnhem Land, travelling to the Gulf of Carpentaria. He went on to explore extensively in the MacDonnell Ranges region before his last and most important work, this scientifically equipped expedition made possible by the sole support of Sir Thomas Elder. The object of the expedition was to explore the unknown interior of Western Australia between the routes laid out by Forrest in 1874 and Giles in 1875 'for the purpose of completing the exploration of Australia'. Lindsay's expedition arrived in Geraldton in January 1892, besieged by internal conflict: the entire scientific team, except for Lawrence Allen Wells, resigned. This marked an abrupt end to David Lindsay's career as an explorer and closed down an expensive expedition that produced very few new discoveries. This is the official report by the leader of the expedition, complete with maps. It predates the first public edition printed by C.E. Bristow. Published by order of the South Australian House of Assembly on 3 October 3 1893 at a cost of ninety seven pounds, four shillings and seven pence plus over thirty-three pounds for the lithography of the large folding maps. In the summary of the work Lindsay states that the expedition travelled 2,745 miles through unexplored country, whilst 80,000 square miles was explored and mapped. 'The abandoment of the expedition was a terrible disappointment to me. That men had so little sense of duty to their leader and to their generous employer should have been the primary cause of the break up of such a splendidly-equipped expedition…'.

        NOW FOR A STORY!

1893. A Collection of Short Original Stories for Children. London: Skeffington and Son, 1893. Original light blue paper-covered boards decorated in white, pink, green and black. Meade, Mrs. Molesworth and Mabel Wotton. It is a very delicate book, because it was bound in paper-covered boards rather than in cloth.~This copy is in very good condition, the main flaw being that the volume has been re-backed in similarly-light-blue cloth, with most of the original spine laid back down; the original light brown patterned endpapers are covered with later blue-patterned ones.         Notes taken at Boston, Old South Church

Boston, 1893. Watercolor drawing on paper. Signed and dated. Sheet measures 9 3/4" x 7 5/8". This original watercolor drawing by Daniel C. Beard depicts various elements of the uniform of a Revolutionary War soldier. The artist made the drawing during a visit to the historic site of the Old South Church in Boston in 1893. Around this time, Beard worked as an illustrator for books by Mark Twain, Ernest Crosby, and others. The drawing includes a blue cloth coat, "an old cocked hat," and a leather cap. Of the latter, Beard notes on the drawing, "I think this cap is of later date than the Revolution. I have seen them in old prints but 1800 & 1810." This original drawing is in very condition with vivid colors and visible pencil sketches. Daniel Carter Beard (1850-1941) was an American illustrator, author, youth leader, and social reformer. In 1905, he founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, a youth organization that taught American frontier traditions and skills to young boys. In 1910, he merged his organization with the Boy Scouts of America and became actively involved in the Scouts and other youth organizations.

A great American government autograph collection of 35 signatures featuring Rutherford B. Hayes ? signed ten days before his death - and Benjamin Harrison, as president, as well as Vice President Levi Morton, future Secretary of State, author of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act John Sherman, and two Speakers of the House<br>

various, [1893] All autographs are housed in a book with gilt-edged paper, unpaginated, some pages blank, 32mo. Approximately 1893. Fine condition. Both Hayes? and Harrison?s signatures have a blank verso, with discoloring on half of Hayes? signature due to the newspaper article that is opposite it. The article is a clipping of an Iowan newspaper, detailing the exchange of the autograph between Hayes and the owner of the book, Evelyn Sherman. Levi Parsons Morton (1824-1920) served as the 22nd United States Vice President under Benjamin Harrison. Prior to obtaining that office, he was a Republican Representative from New York for the 46th and 47th Congresses. In 1880, the Republican nominee, James Garfield, asked Morton to be his running mate, but Morton declined, requesting Ambassador to France instead. In a weird twist of fate, it would have actually been Morton ?" instead of Chester A. Arthur ?" to take the Oath of Office after Garfield?s assassination.         Aux Indes et en Australie dans le yacht le "Sunbeam"

Tours: Alfred Mame et fils, 1893. Quarto, with many illustrations, some taken from photographs, gilt edges, neat repairs to gutter at front endpapers; a few spots but a fine copy in the original ornately pictorial cloth, with pretty decoration in silver and gilt. A fine copy of the splendid first French edition, which puts the English edition of 1890 quite in the shade. It is scarce - and is not in fact recorded by Ferguson - although almost half the book is devoted to the Australian portion of the voyage. Lord and Lady Brassey made several cruises around the world in their yacht Sunbeam. Lady Brassey&#39;s account of their earlier voyage published in 1879 was very popular and went through numerous editions. Her last voyage was undertaken in 1886-7: she died before the cruise was completed and her grieving husband completed her work for publication. He later authorised this French version, which was translated by Gaston Bonnefont. The many fine plates and illustrations are after designs by R.T. Pritchett, and engraved by Whymper, Cooper and Pearson. There are almost too many to comment on - more than 200 in total - but the work is particularly rich with nautical scenes, as well as charming vignettes ranging from street scenes to details of Australian and Pacific natural history.

Columbus Outdone! Capt. Andrews&#39; Cruise in the Sapolio

New York: Enoch Morgan&#39;s Sons Company, 1893. Octavo, folding map and folding plate, illustrated throughout; spine ends a little rubbed, front endpaper slightly chipped, very good in original illustrated brown cloth, flyleaf inscribed and signed by the author. Williams&#39; solo crossing in his smallest boat. Signed presentation copy in original illustrated cloth, detailing the audacious solo transatlantic crossing of William Andrews in 1892. Andrews has previously completed a crossing in a vessel of some twenty feet (see previous item), but evidently found it too commodious - perhaps because there was enough room for his brother. This time, he set out in a considerably smaller vessel of 14 feet 6 inches christened the Sapolio. Entirely hand-made by Andrews, this delicate boat of canvas stretched upon a cedar frame began her courageous voyage from Atlantic City in New Jersey on July 21, 1892, arriving at the point of Columbus&#39; departure in Spain some 63 days later. This book includes the journal kept by Andrews, with descriptions and illustrations of the Azores where the Sapolio anchored during the voyage. This copy, with a signed inscription by Andrews, was issued as a souvenir for the Chicago World&#39;s Fair - a spectacular exhibition of innovation and commerce staged to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus&#39;s discovery of the Americas in 1492.

Strange, But True. Life and Adventures of Captain Thomas Crapo and Wife

New Bedford: Capt. Thomas Crapo, c., 1893. Small octavo, with illustrations; a very good copy in the original brown cloth. Man & wife, across the Atlantic! The short-handed sailor Thomas Crapo enjoyed sudden fame for his gruelling transatlantic crossing in a 19 foot dory, accompanied by his new wife. The seven-week voyage resulted in a publicity and show tour for the couple that lasted several years. Crapo self-published this ghosted autobiography in 1893, and turned eventually to the coastal cargo trade until May 1899 when in an attempt to repeat his former triumphs he left New Bedford in a 9 foot dinghy, bound for Cuba. His body was recovered off Charleston some time later. Mrs C. was left penniless and re-issued her late husband&#39;s &#39;autobiography&#39; to raise funds. The reissue is not identified on the title-page but may be identified by the fact that it ends on p. 151 with Mrs. Crapo&#39;s description of his demise. This re-issue is much scarcer than the first edition; this copy was signed on the title-page by Joanna Crapo in 1904.
