        WIDOWERS' HOUSES. Inscribed.

Henry & Co,, London 1893 - George Bernard Shaw. WIDOWERS' HOUSES. Inscribed. London: Henry & Co, 1893. 8vo., 126pp. + 2pp. ads. Gilt-stamped publisher's original cloth, now a faded plum. A significant presentation copy inscribed in black fountain pen on the half-title: "To Robert Loraine / from G. Bernard Shaw. / 9th Nov. 1907". Loraine [1876-1935] was a man of action: actor-manager, soldier, aviator, Fabian & of course, a close friend to Shaw - perhaps best known as an actor he's seen most commonly on holiday with the Shaw’s & Harley Granville-Barker or at Fabian events. Loraine & Shaw shared political affiliations & a passion for theatre: it was Loraine who premiered as the lead in Man & Superman on Broadway, the production was massively successful & launched Shaw as a force to be reckoned with in the United States. A significant association copy of this very scarce first edition with only 500 printed & as few as 150 sold, many fewer signed thus. Widowers' Houses was the first of George Bernard Shaw's plays to be staged. It is one of the three plays Shaw published as Plays Unpleasant in 1898. It was deemed "unpleasant" because its purpose is not to entertain its audience as the traditional Victorian theatre was expected to do but to raise awareness of social problems & to censure the exploitation of the poor by the unproductive upper class. Custom TBCL embossed cloth slipcase in fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Lady Windermere's Fan. A Play about a Good Woman.

London, Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1893. - 8vo. [14], 132, [16] pp. Original publisher's cloth with spine lettered in gilt and decorations stamped in gilt on both covers. In decorative gilt-stamped red half calf case. First edition, published on November 9th, 1893, in only 500 copies. This copy contains on the front flyleaf a humorous, approximately contemporary five-line inscription not by the author, but probably by a like-named Baltic wit to "Madame de Paykull hommage respectueux de l'auteur (s'il n'etait pas mort depuis longtemps)". The Baltic Biographical Archive (BaBA) alone contains four records of "Oskar Wilde" for the period in question, among them a secretary of a mortgage association (b. 1849), a pharmacist (1854-1906), a mathematician (b. 1862), and a privately instructed student (b. 1886). The Paykull family, an old Baltic noble house (cf. BaBA I 266, 335f.) with branches in Sweden, was mainly notable for military officers and diplomats (cf. SBA). - With the bookplate of the Swedish collector Carl Palme. Flyleaves somewhat browned, cover slightly rubbed and wrinkled, otherwise very good, uncut copy with curious inscription and in Charles Shannon's original binding. Mason 357.         ORIGINAL watercolor of Barbadoe's Park, Kilmarnock, Scotland, signed "G. Ross 1893"

Kilmarnock, 1893 - A very early work by Ross, then age 20, done in Scotland before his removal to the United States. Gordon Ross (1873-1946) was a prolific artist, working mostly in watercolor, from his early days in his native Scotland. As a book artist he tackled everything from Dickens to Shakespeare, including a number of titles for The Limited Editions Club. He is also noted for his sporting work, which included illustrations for The Derrydale Press, Surtees's Jorrocks Jaunts and Jolities, and several large prints of notable sportsmen, including Sir Thomas Lipton, Hugo Meynell, Peter Beckford, and Surtees himself. The eminent collector A. Edward Newton, who wrote the introduction to the Surtees edition, praised Ross in his book End Papers: "No one now living in Great Britain and doing work in his line can compare with Gordon Ross, now living in New York.He has no living superior; I doubt if he has his equal for the very quality needed to illustrate a humorous classic." A superb draftsman, with a gift for portraiture, Ross's work has an ingratiating quality of lively elegance; his originals very seldom come on the market 21 x 14-1/2 inches. On verso is written in Ross's hand the title and "painted by Gordon Ross, St. Andrew's House, Kilmarnock." Also pasted on the verso is a page from the book Rambles Through Kilmarnock, reprinting a poem that evidently inspired Ross's work: "A wild, weird look has the 'Lady's Walk', / And the trees are stripped and old.". Unframed, on board; some wear and minor repair to corners or margins, overall very good

        The Waverley Novels

Boston: Estes and Lauriat,, 1893-4. With Introductory Essay and Notes by Andrew Lang. 48 volumes, octavo (225 × 145 mm). Finely bound in scarlet half morocco, spines gilt-tooled in compartments with gilt titles direct, marbled sides with gilt rules, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Engraved frontispieces, vignette title pages printed on japon paper, and illustrated plates. Bookplate and ownership stamp of Frederick E. Reed to each volume. Very mild cockling to some leaves but still superb set in excellent condition. Edition de Grand Luxe of Walter Scott's Waverley Novels, number 352 of 500 super-deluxe sets. Estes and Lauriat also issued an "edition de luxe" of 1,000 sets, though this is the far grander and more limited edition, presented here as a magnificently bound library set. Though the bookplates in this set are numbered, sequentially, vols. 16-63 (presumably because Frederick E. Reed had 15 other volumes, not included here, of Scott's poems and works from different editions bound with these Waverley Novels a single library set), this set nonetheless constitutes Estes & Lauriat's Edition de Grand Luxe of Scott's Waverley Novels, complete as issued.

Identification Anthropometrique. Instructions Signalétiques. Nouvelle Édition, entièrement refondue et considérablement augmentée

Melun: Imprimerie Administrative, 1893 - Octavo (247 × 161 mm). Contemporary blue quarter cloth on marbled boards, tan morocco label to the spine. A little rubbed, hinges slightly cracked, light browning, but nonetheless a very good copy. Line-drawn frontispiece and 51 similar plates, 30 photogravure plates, 2 folding tables, folding photogravure plate of "Nuances de l'Iris humain," illustrations and diagrams to the text. First published in 1886, this edition represents Bertillon's final statement of the technique of Bertillonage or forensic anthropometry. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "hommage de haute estime", to Monsieur Cruppi. Jean Cruppi (1855-1933), was a prominent French politician who served as a député for 25 years: Bertillon here addresses him as "avocat général à la Cour de Cassation". He held various ministerial posts, including education (1907), commerce and industry (1908), foreign affairs (1911), and from June 1911 to January 1912 he was minister of justice. Gernsheim explains the significance of this work in terms of the history of photography and also of the development of scientific method in detection: "In France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Denmark an anthropometrical system consisting of measuring certain bones which do not alter after maturity was adopted in the early 1880s. Alphonse Bertillon, a Parisian police officer, in 1880 devised this method for identification by measuring the length and width of the head, the length of the middle and little fingers of the left hand, of the left foot and forearm, and the height of the body. Examination of 50,000 people showed that no two had the same measurements. By the Bertillon method, photographs were divided into three classes according to height - tall, medium, or short - and each of these classes was subdivided again and again according to the other measurements. The measurements of an arrested person were given priority over comparison of photographs, thus avoiding mistaken identity due to strong chance resemblance - or a false name which prisoners frequently give" (The History of Photography). Bertillon's successes led to the system's rapid adoption in Britain and America, but flaws began to emerge, and the successful use of finger-printing signalled the end for Bertillonage. However, his work was without doubt the first fully-developed scientific system used by police to identify criminals. Bertillon standardized the mug-shot, and also created many other forensic techniques, including forensic document examination; the use of galvanoplastic compounds to preserve footprints; comparative ballistics; and the dynamometer, used to determine the degree of force used in breaking and entering. His work was viewed with approval by no less an authority than Sherlock Holmes, who in "The Naval Treaty" expressed "his enthusiastic admiration of the French savant". In The Hound of the Baskervilles Holmes is "just a little" put out to be considered second best to Bertillon, snappishly suggesting that Dr Mortimer had "better consult him" if he considers Bertillon his superior. Uncommon, particularly so signed, and with such an excellent association. Garrison-Morton 181 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Jane Annie, or The Good Conduct Prize

Chappell & Co, London 1893 - Paperback. This is a very scarce item with an interesting history. J.M. Barrie (1860-1937) and Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) met early in their writing careers when they both wrote for the magazine The Idler. They were both Scottish and passionate about cricket, and they became great friends. Their odd collaboration in writing this operetta came about because Barrie had agreed to write the libretto. He became ill, however, perhaps suffering a nervous breakdown, and his friend Doyle came to his rescue by collaborating with him on the work. Despite their efforts, the operetta was a failure, which apparently bothered them very little. In the original printed wrappers. This is very nice copy of this uncommon work, particularly in this condition. This is a variant issue of this unusual collaboration. Housed in slipcase with the bookplates of Lord Ezher and Clark Hunter. LIT/100709. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Jane Annie: The Conduct Prize - A New and Original Comic Opera (First Edition)

Chappell, London 1893 - First Edition, fourth issue. Octavo. Sewn wrappers. Two copies, one Very Good and one only Fair. A one-time collaboration between the two British literary giants, a play written when both worked for the London magazine The Idler. Barrie began the work, but fell ill, at which point it was completed by Doyle. The better copy has the publisher's stamp on the front wrapper, perhaps a review copy, with small chips at the extremities of the wrapper. The second copy has a horizontal split to the front wrapper, and the front wrapper is detached and chipped at the edges, rear wrapper missing. Both copies are housed together in a half-leather clamshell box with red leather, raised bands, gilt titles, and marbled paper-covered edges and cloth-covered boards. Owner name in gilt at the bottom of the front board of the box. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
