New York: A. A. Vantine & Company, 1893. Envelope. Very Good. The envelope, made from sparkling Japanese paper, measures 3" x 5" when folded and 10" x 13" when unfolded. Vantine's was one of the first and largest importers of Asian goods in the United States and dominated the American market well into the twentieth century. Vantine opened his first "Oriental Store" in New York City in 1866, after years of selling trade goods to gold miners in California where he first became captivated by Asian ceramics and textiles. After a slow start, his sales exploded, and by the 1870s, Vantine stocked thousands of items and had branch offices located throughout the United States. This very scarce postal advertisement is truly spectacular in size, illustration and content.

24 Chromolithograph Prints from Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements

Hartford: American Publishing Co, 1893. Print. A complete set of 24 attractive chromolithographs on heavy paper showing 75 different U.S. naval vessels. Prints vary slightly in size but are approximately 11" x 14"; image size is approximately 8" x 12". Each print is numbered and labeled on the reverse. The images are all in excellent shape, however they have some marginal soiling and edge wear including chipped corners and short marginal tears. All would mat and frame well. These prints were prepared from Cozzens' watercolors and used to illustrated Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements by J. D. Jerrold Kelley. The illustrations range from early American ships, like the Constitution, through those of the Civil War, like the Kearsarge, to those of the 'New Steel Navy" including all of the ABCD (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Dolphin) ships launched in the mid-1880s. Few intact examples remain as the prints were frequently removed for display. In 1916, a stash of almost 100 sets of the prints were found and sold under a new title, Old Naval Prints. It is likely this set came from that stash. Cozzens was an important turn-of-the-century maritime painter whose most famous works illustrated the racing yachts of the 1880s . Individual prints from this scarce set retail for $175-$350.

The United States with an Excursion into Mexico: Handbook for Travellers

Leipsic (i.e. Leipsig): Karl Baedeker, Publishers, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. xc, 516 pages. The first Baedeker guide to the United States and the first to be written in English. Hinrichsen E259. First edition (first printing). An exceptional copy, seemingly never opened for reading. Collated complete will all maps, with most, including the large map of the Unites States, never unfolded. There is a very slight bit of fraying to the cloth in three or four places. The spine is slightly dimmed. There is a small previous owner's name on the front free endaper. To top it off, this copy is in the original unprinted dust jacket with the title label affixed to the spine, as was Baedeker's custom in the 1890s. The jacket has some chips and wear at the corners and spine ends, and several folds (it may have been folded and inserted in the book, which is why it survives). A great copy, almost never found this nice, let alone in the jacket.

Stonehenge: Its Probable Origin, Age, and Uses Edited and compiled from the most authentic sources

Maddington, Wiltshire: William A. Judd, 1893. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original pale blue printed wrappers, with the front wrapper being decorated and lettered in blue (some modest toning and handling soil to the wrappers, a short split to the upper portion of the wrapper where it joins the spine). In 1870, Geologist William A. Judd established a business taking and selling photographs of Stonehenge from multiple views. Judd became, in effect, Stonehenge's official photographer and custodian and by 1878 Stonehenge had become an national obsession. [The oldest photograph of it known to us having been taken by Prince Albert in 1853.] Judd ultimately was appointed the official custodian by the site's private owners and acted as a guide and photographer at the stones for many years. While Judd both photographed the Site and sought to determine the origin of Stonehenge's stones, part of his job as custodian was to keep visitors from knocking chunks out of the stones and carrying them away as memorabilia, forcing Judd to live out on the plains with the stones themselves. This 1893 booklet is one of the earliest guidebooks to Stonehenge published. [The first guidebook was written in 1823 and Judd's guidebook and photographs without doubt had a strong effect on the growing popularity of the Site.] A Very Good copy of the first Guidebook to Stonehenge, perhaps the best-known prehistoric monument in the world --and forming the core of a World Heritage Site -- produced by William A. Judd, one of the earliest important figures in Stonehenge's modern history and in the popularization of the Site. This little booklet is itself a rare artifact now, and we have not been able to locate any auction records for it. Its age and ephemeral nature have conspired to produced its great scarcity. A Very Good copy of a RARE AND IMPORTANT ITEM IN THE HISTORY OF ONE OF THE EARTH'S GREAT SITES. RARE AND NOTABLE INDEED.

Manuscript Travel Journal - "A Coaching Tour" with Watercolour Drawings of the Scottish Highlands

Scotland 1893 - Scottish Nobles on a Coaching Tour Halkett Baronetcy - Kingdom of Fife Scotland Highlands, August 1893. "Ye Coaching Tour." Manuscript travel journal brilliantly composed in poetic verse, exquisitely illustrated with watercolour ink drawings, and chronicling a tour in a horse-drawn carriage made by a Scottish noble and his extended family. Passengers are Sir Peter Arthur Halkett, 8th Baronet of Pitfirrane, his daughter Madeline, his father-in-law Captain Richard Kirwan Hill, and other Hill family members from Dover. The author is miss Madeline Halkett, then 26 years of age. Oblong 8vo. Journal made by Reeves & Sons of London, with superior Whatman's paper. 34 pages, each executed and illustrated in a fine hand, with gilt initials and Roman numeral pagination. With exception of only one leaf and a frontis, all illustrations are coloured. Red floral patterned velvet over publisher's boards, hand embroidered title to front, button loop enclosure. Cloth fraying at extrmeities, otherwise very good condition, a delightful work. A whimsical account of a one week sojourn to the Highlands in the nineteenth century, the author being of the now extinct Halkett baronetcy, and being a skilled artist and clever writer. The journey begins at her home, the Pitfirrane Castle, situated west of Dunfermline in the Kingdom of Fife, which dates from the 16th century, and which was once the seat of the Halkett family. Just beyond the Stirling Castle, after passing woodlands, lakes and mountain views, the first night's rest is in the Queen's Head Hotel at the Bridge of Allan. Heading to Dunblane and Trossachs, the second morning they pass the walls of the Keir House property and the Doune Castle. A fine dinner is had in Callander, the gateway town to the parks of Trossachs. Evidently the people of this quaint town were most curious about the foreigners and their city coach. The following day is spent relaxing along Loch Katrine where the author mentions Rob Roy's Cave, the alleged hideout of a Highland cattleman, hero and outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, more commonly known in folklore as Robin Hood. To Aberfoyle on the fourth day, and a picnic at the Lake of Menteith, for a second time the author reflects on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, who reigned from 1542 to 1567. On the return journey, the party stopped to tour the dungeons and great halls of the Doune Castle, the custodian then being James Dunbar who published a guide to the previously little visited castle. Arriving safely back home miss Halkett pays tribute to the four horses who led the carriage. Excerpts from the manuscript: "A tour in the Highlands as soon as we can. a party of six with umbrellas and sticks, with coats and with hoods, and their worldly goods." ". Past the woodlands of Torrie, and on by the shore. close by the door of the Balfour of Burleigh." [Lord Balfour of Burleigh, Burleigh Castle, Kinross] ". through Alloa town which is famed for its beer, and also for yarn though the latter is dear" "And away by those cornfields now golden with grain, there was fought once a battle well known to fame, 'twas there where the Saxons were bidden to turn, by "the Bruce" - at the brook, which is now called Bannockburn." ". straight ahead before you the Castle of Doune - a grand feudal hold of the Baron so bold who imprisoned our Queen - as in history is told" ". we enter the gorge, and pass by the 'Big Turk'. By the edge of Loch Vennacher, silent and deep." "At the turn of the road a great castle behold, it has turrets and corbets as if it were old. the Trossachs Hotel!" ".by the side of Loch Katrine - the scenery's grand. out come the sketch books, and brushes and paint." ". and we all vow, both the masters and men, that next year we'll do it all over again." End Excerpts. The passengers on the coach are as follows: "Sir A. Halkett" is Sir Peter Arthur Halkett (1834-1904), 8th Baronet of Pitfirrane, Fife, whose daughter was named Madeline, also a passenger on this coach. He is a descendent

        Autograph letter signed.

Château Malrome near Bordeaux, ca. 1893. - 4to. 1¾ pp. Yvette Guilbert and Aristide Bruant are referenced in this letter to his friend, writer and art leader, Andre Marty. "The book could not be better. Yvette wrote me a very kind note. As for the two "japon" proofs, they are admirable. Do your best to request them. Geffroy and you know better than I what to do. Keep my copy of the lithograph I will pick it up when I come back and send me the clippings relative to our book. And these eight to Bruant". Signed, "Yours truly and my best regards to Mrs. Marty, H. de Toulouse Lautrec". - An exceptional letter making reference to his two greatest celebrities depicted in posters, Yvette [Guilbert] and [Aristide] Bruant. Lautrec did a complete set of illustrations for a book on Guilbert, and here he tells Marty how Guilbert was quite pleased. At the time of this letter, Lautrec was at the peak of his productivity. He unfortunately died in 1891 from syphilis and alcoholism. Letters signed with such a full bold signature, "H. de Toulouse Lautrec" are rare and most desirable and one talking about his work, more so. Some damage to edges. - Toulouse-Lautrec refers to Yvette Guilbert (1865-1944), French cabaret singer and actress epitomizing La Belle Époque, and Aristide Bruant, (1851-1925), French cabaret singer, comedian, and nightclub owner. Toulouse-Lautrec's famous posters immortalized both singers. Bruant is now perhaps best known as the man in the red scarf and black cape featured in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec popular poster.

Aux Indes et en Australie dans le yacht le "Sunbeam"

Tours: Alfred Mame et fils, 1893. Quarto, with many illustrations, some taken from photographs, gilt edges, attractive in original ornate pictorial cloth. The splendid first French edition, which puts the English edition of 1890 quite in the shade. It is scarce - and is not in fact recorded by Ferguson - although almost half the book is devoted to the Australian portion of the voyage.Lord and Lady Brassey made several cruises around the world in their yacht Sunbeam. Lady Brassey's account of their earlier voyage published in 1879 was very popular and went through numerous editions. Her last voyage was undertaken in 1886-7: she died before the cruise was completed and her grieving husband completed her work for publication. He later authorised this French version, which was translated by Gaston Bonnefont. The many fine plates and illustrations are after designs by R.T. Pritchett, and engraved by Whymper, Cooper and Pearson. There are almost too many to comment on - more than 200 in total - but the work is particularly rich with nautical scenes, as well as charming vignettes ranging from street scenes to details of Australian and Pacific natural history.

Masque mortuaire en plâtre à patine

1893 - J.-M. Charcot : Masque mortuaire en plâtre à patine brune. Patine doré jaune d’ictère. Hauteur: 31 cm largeur 20 cm.
