London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent, & Co. Limtd, 1892.. Octavo, pp. [1-17] 18-293 [294-296: ads], inserted frontispiece, other illustrations in the text, original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in yellow-green. First edition. A "creepy" tale of black magic and witchcraft in early eighteenth-century Northamptonshire, loosely based on the story of Elinor Shaw, the last person burnt in England for the practice of witchcraft. The narrator is the victim of mesmerism and hallucinatory horrors, one of which is a gigantic blue dragon that materializes in the air. Wright has read, but claims not to have been influenced by Harrison Ainsworth's THE LANCASHIRE WITCHES (1849), which, although "useful as an exponent of the old beliefs of Lancashire," is "too long, and the characters are anything but sharply cut." Wright apologizes for the portions of his story that "are necessarily of a somewhat creepy nature," but he hopes that "mingled with the more serious features of the southern narratives," he has caught something of their spirit, "a quaintness, a naivety, a sly humour, that makes Northamptonshire in respect to these ancient and exploded theories, far and away the most interesting county in England." Bleiler (1978), p. 213. Reginald 15674. Wolff 7332. Spine panel darkened, spine ends and corner tips worn, outer joints mended, damp stain on front cover, a sound, good copy with tight and clean interior. A rare book. (#149386)

Travels Amongst the Great Andes of the Equator. With maps and illustrations. Second edition.

London: John Murray, 1892 - Quarto. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, titles to spine gilt, decorative border to front cover and spine gilt, to rear cover in blind, edges untrimmed, brown coated endpapers, pocket to rear pastedown. Spine gently rolled and toned, wear to extremities, restored bump to spine, top edge dust toned; a very good copy. Frontispiece, 19 plates, black and white illustrations to the text and 4 maps, 3 of them folding, 1 in pocket to rear pastedown. Second edition. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper verso, "With the kind regards of the author, Edward Whymper, Oct. 11, 1905", the recipient's ownership inscription beneath, "A. McNicoll". In 1904 Whymper named a mountain in Yoho National Park, Canada, "Mount McNicoll", after David McNicoll, the Vice-President of the Canadian Pacific Railway; the recipient of this work is potentially a relative of David McNicoll. Whymper undertook a number of lecture tours in Canada from 1900 onwards to promote tourism on behalf of the Canadian Pacific Railway, including in 1905, when "he was injured in a train crash, after which he began to experience memory loss, failing eyesight, and fainting spells" (ODNB). This work is often considered Whymper's magnum opus. Whymper "travelled in 1879–80 to Ecuador with his former Matterhorn rival J. A. Carrel and the latter's cousin Louis Carrel, to test the physiological effects of low pressure at high altitudes and the phenomenon of 'mountain sickness'. They twice climbed Chimborazo (20,498 feet), the highest mountain in Ecuador, and other peaks including Cotopaxi (19,613 feet), an active volcano. Whymper also surveyed the area and collected over 8000 zoological and botanical specimens" (ODNB). The book combines a popular account of his ascents with his detailed scientific observations.         THE SILVER DOMINO; OR SIDE WHISPERS AND LITERARY

London: Lamley and Co., Exhibition Road, 1892.. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1-3] 4-365 [366: blank] [367: printer's imprint] [368: blank], original pictorial black cloth, all panels stamped in silver, white endpaper with floral pattern printed in gray. First edition, first printing. An anonymously published, ill-advised, savage attack on her critics, publishers, and the Victorian literary establishment which alienated almost all her professional contacts. Corelli, who believed in female superiority and her own genius, "enjoyed a period of great literary success from the publication of her first novel in 1886 until World War I. Corelli's novels sold more copies than the combined sales of popular contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling, although critics often derided her work as 'the favorite of the common multitude.' ... Mackay began her career as a musician, adopting the name Marie Corelli for her billing. Eventually she turned to writing and published her first novel, A ROMANCE OF TWO WORLDS, in 1886. In her time, she was the most widely read author of fiction. Her works were collected by Winston Churchill, Randolph Churchill, and members of the British Royal Family, among others. Mackay, who famously had little time for the press, faced criticism from the literary elite for her overly melodramatic writing. In THE SPECTATOR, Grant Allen called her 'a woman of deplorable talent who imagined that she was a genius, and was accepted as a genius by a public to whose commonplace sentimentalities and prejudices she gave a glamorous setting.' James Agate represented her as combining 'the imagination of a Poe with the style of an Ouida and the mentality of a nursemaid.'" - Wikipedia. "A key book in her career ..." - Wolff 1478. Her parodies include "Byron Loquitur," an account of the Silver Domino's encounter with the ghost of Lord Byron. A bright, very good or better copy. A lovely copy. The first printing is rare.         Francesca BERTINI original signiertes Foto der "Diva des italienischen Stummfilms" original signed photograph

8,5 x 13,5 cm tadelloser Zustand , near mint conditionLebenslange Echtheitsgarantie. Lifetime authenticity guarantee.Francesca Bertini (eigentlich Elena Seracini Vitiello * 11. April, nach anderen Quellen 5. Januar 1892 in Florenz ? 13. The Catholicos of the East and his People.

London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge,, 1892. Being Impression of Five Years' Work in the Archbishop of Canterbury's Assyrian Mission; an Account of the Religious and Secular Life and Opinions of the Eastern Syrian Christians of Kurdistan and Northern Persia (known also as Nestorians). Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt and black, brown coated endpapers. Folding map frontispiece, wood engravings to the text. Joints and extremities rubbed, spine darkened, very faint soiling overall, small bump to fore edge of both boards, fore edge spotted, internally clean. A very good copy. First and only edition of this important account of the Church of the East, uncommon in the original cloth. In 1886 Maclean (1858–1943) travelled to Urmia in Iranian Azerbaijan as the first head of Archbishop Benson's mission to the Assyrian Christians, "which had as its purpose not conversion, which its statutes forbade, but the strengthening of faith and religious practice" (ODNB). Despite opposition from Persian authorities, Maclean oversaw the establishment of a Syriac press and numerous schools for clergy and laypeople. He returned to his former parish at Portree, Skye, in 1891, co-authoring the present account and also writing an important grammar of Syriac (1895), followed by a dictionary (1901). In an address to the Lambeth Conference in 1908 he suggested that the Church of England was concerned not only "to restore these ancient Churches for their own sakes, but also one may confidently hope that in the future they will be able to do what we Westerns cannot do – they will be able to appeal to the Moslem mind" (cited after Taylor, Narratives of Identity: The Syrian Orthodox Church and the Church of England, p. 125).

Männliches Portrait, in Original Pastell-Kreide hinter Passepartout

22x27 (40x50 mit Passepartout) schönes signiertes Blatt. Wilhelm Schnarrenberger (* 30. Juni 1966 in Bad Mergentheim).[1][2].         MOBY DICK or the White Whale

Boston: Dana Estes, 1892. Melville, Herman. MOBY DICK or the White Whale. Boston: Dana Estes & Company, (1892 but actually c. 1900). Four illustrations including frontispiece by A. Burnham Shute. Early hardcover illustrated edition.. With Elizabeth Melville's 1892 copyright notation on verso of title. A VERY GOOD example of this uncommonly scarce early reprint edition. Between Melville's 1851 first edition and Melville's literary revival in the 1920s, Moby Dick was reprinted only a very few times making all early editions particularly desirable in this kind of collector's condition. Original publisher's dark blue cloth, gilt, with a pictorial design of a tropical scene on the front cover, and a pictorial illustration of a shell on the spine. This example has only light wear with the outer hinges notably unrubbed, tiny bumping to the corners, spine gilt dulled, a trifle dusty but without any fraying or major blemish. Inner hinges starting, all plates present and unfoxed. Excellent eye appeal and an ideal copy for the Melville collector. . First Illustrated Edition, Thus. Decorative Boards. Very Good. Illus. by A. Burnham Shute.

Cushing G81. Osler 1598. Waller 19650. The value of the fine ridges in the epidermis of the palmar surfaces of the fingers as a means of identification was known to the Chinese and others long before Galton proposed their use for such purposes. In the 1860s, Sir William James Herschel published a letter in the journal Nature, describing his method for identifying criminals in India by their fingerprints. Twenty years later, Henry Faulds, a Scottish surgeon working in Tokyo, published a letter, also in Nature, proposing a method to record fingerprints with printing ink. But it was Galton whose detailed studies of fingerprints led to the adoption of a classification that is still the basis for the system used throughout the world today. Galton saw Herschel's letter, and over the next five years developed his own statistical model of fingerprint analysis and identification, classifying fingerprint patterns into eight broad categories and devising a classification system. He had calculated that the chance of a false positive (two different individuals having the same fingerprints) was about 1 in 64 billion. N. B.

Early Edith Wharton ALS from Manhattan about the ... "kind invitation to the Students' Association of Miss Hersey's School"

New York, NY, April 22 (c. 1892-1899). 4.375" x 6.875. "Cream bifold mourning stationery with black borders, on "884 Park Avenue" letterhead. Free flowing script inscribed in black ink and signed "Edith Wharton" at top of second page. Dated "April 22nd" and written from Edith Wharton's Manhattan townhouse sometime between 1892 and 1899. Addressed to one "Miss Howard", likely a faculty member or student enrolled at Miss Hersey's School for Girls located in Boston, MA. In extremely fine condition, each page measuring 4.375" x 6.875". Expected central fold marks do not detract from bright condition of paper and ink.Letter content in its entirety is below:"April 22nd884 Park Avenue. My dear Miss Howard,I am in receipt of the kind invitation to the Students' Association of Miss Hersey's School to be present at their annual luncheon on May 27th, and I am sorry that the impossibility of being in Boston at that time obliges me to decline. Will you kindly express my regrets to the Association, & believe me, with many thanks,Sincerely Yours,Edith Wharton"Edith Wharton (1862-1937) is celebrated for the quality and quantity of her written works. Her first book was not published until age forty, yet Wharton produced an astonishing volume of poetry, short stories, novels, plays, travel stories, ghost stories, essays, and non-fiction. Many of these works provide enduring commentary on American life in the Gilded Age. Wharton traveled extensively through Europe with her parents during her childhood and grew up in elite social circles. She personally benefited from privileges of wealth and social status, but ideologically despised the societal mechanisms that preserved them, and the lengths that were taken to secure them. This criticism of the emerging American class of nouveaux riches appears frequently in her work. Several factors must be considered to determine the year that this letter was written. The stationery letterhead indicates that Wharton wrote the letter sometime after November 1891, when she and her husband Teddy Wharton (1850-1928) finalized the purchase of their Manhattan townhouse. The letter refers to "Miss Hersey's School", which was a secondary school for girls operated between 1877 and 1899. Using these two parameters, we can safely assume that Wharton penned this letter sometime between spring 1892 and 1899. It is unknown for whom Wharton was mourning, although this would certainly narrow down our choice of years. During this period, Wharton attempted to publish some of her short stories, travel narratives, and poetry; her more famous novels were published during the next twenty years. Maine-born Heloise E. Hersey graduated from Vassar College in 1876, about ten years after the prestigious women's college was established in Poughkeepsie, NY. Hersey operated the Boston school mentioned in this letter and taught Anglo-Saxon and rhetoric at Smith College in Northampton, MA. Wharton's literary reputation was beginning to be established in the 1890s, perhaps explaining her invitation to an annual school luncheon. An eloquent letter of refusal, couched in delicate and socially acceptable language, in very fine condition."
