Contributions to the History of Cryptography

[mid-1970s] . [together with;] Contributions to the History of Cryptology. [&] A Collection of Papers and Chapters on the Use of Mathematics in Cryptography and Cryptanalysis. 7 volumes, quarto (291 × 206 mm). First 6 in vari-coloured buckram backed textured paper boards, the last in blue full buckram, titles gilt to spines. Largely typescript with numerous mounted photographic and photostat illustrations, cipher alphabets inked to the text. Slight shelf-wear, but overall very good. Unmarked as such, but from the collection of Dr. Carl H. Meyer, co-designer of the Data Encryption Standard (DES); holder of 15 patents in the field of cryptography; author of the article on cryptography for the McGraw Hill Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology and co-author, with S. M. Matyas, of Cryptography - A New Dimension in Computer Data Security. Fascinating collection of around 80 typed transcripts, clipped and photostat-ed excerpts of articles from various academic journals - British, American, French, German, Austrian - organized as illustrations of the development of cryptography, cryptology and cryptanalysis. The first two volumes relate to ciphers and keys and include Ludwig von Rockinger on a Bavarian collection of sixteenth-century code keys extracted from the Archivalische Zeitschrift for 1892; two pieces by Yves Gylden on French codes of the eighteenth century from the Revue Internationale de Criminalistique; and several photostat-ed pages from John Wallis's Opera… relating to decipherment. The following three volumes contain papers specifically on the development of cipher-writing with three pieces by Charles J. Mendelsohn; a transcription from K. F. Lehmann's scarce, Danzig, 1786 pamphlet on Bergsträßer's optical telegraph with plates; and a two-part article by Gabriel Dallet on the possible applications of codes taken from the Revue Scientifique, 1887. The sixth volume is titled "Black Cabinets and Famous Cryptanalysts," and contains a lengthy piece by F. Stix on the Austrian cabinets noirs and a translation by Mendelsohn of Simonetta's 'Treatise on Deciphering,' originally published in the Signal Corps Bulletin in 1937. The final volume concentrates on mathematical aspects of cryptographic and cryptanalytic problems including a presentation copy of a mimeographed paper on the Hill Cipher by Richard E. Powell, dated Berkeley, 1950; two papers on the Kryha machine by Georg Hamel; and Hans Rohrbach's 'Chiffrierverfahren der neuesten Zeit' from the Archiv der elektrischen Übertragung, 1948 with a translation by Howard T. Oakley. An extremely unusual and absorbing trouvaille.

The Port of New York. Birds Eye View from the Battery, Looking South

New York: Currier & Ives, 1892. unbound. very good(+). Parsons, Charles and Lyman Atwater. Original color lithograph. Image measures 26.25" x 38", with frame 32.25" x 44". An excellent example of the rare 1892 edition of a dramatic birds eye view of the port of New York. Included below the title is a list of fifty-seven references to sites of interest. At the center of the image is Castle Garden, originally an island and cultural hub with a world famous theater. The piece shows the building when it was still operating as the world's first immigration center. In 1892, when it was replaced by Ellis Island, Castle Garden returned to its roots of entertainment and became an aquarium. The flurry of activity in one of the world's busiest ports is palpable, with horse drawn streetcars along the Battery and boats and ships veering in and around Staten Island, Governor's Island, part of Brooklyn and New Jersey. The Statue of Liberty had just been completed in 1886. Currier & Ives called themselves the "Printmakers to the People" and they produced thousands of images that chronicled the growth of the United States. Founded in 1834, Currier & Ives produced high quality lithographs until the business closed in 1907. The piece has been expertly restored and is framed and sealed with padded rabbet and UF5 conservation plexiglass.

        The Novels Of George Eliot

Edinburgh and London - William Blackwood and Sons, 1892 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The seven novels of George Eliot together with a volume ofshort stories, in uniform fine bindings by Bumpus, with binder's stamp to front free endpaper. In eight volumes complete. New edition. The volumes are as follows: Adam Bede; The Mill on the Floss; Silas Marner, The Lifted Veil, Brother Jacob; Scenes of Clerical Life; Felix Holt the Radical; Romola; Middlemarch; and Daniel Deronda. Mary AnneEvans (1819 - 1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist and translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (187172), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and well known for their realism and psychological insight. Scenes of Clerical Life is the title under which George Eliot's first published fictional work, a collection of three short stories, was released in book form, and the first of her works to be released under her famous pseudonym. She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women only writing lighthearted romances. An additional factor in her use of a pen name may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals attending her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived for over 20 years. Her 1872 work, Middlemarch, has been described as the greatest novel in the English language. Previous owner's ink inscription to verso of front free endpapers of first and last volumes. Condition: In half morocco bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, smart but with slight wear to extremities and the odd mark to boards. Front hinge to volume one starting slightly. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout but with occasional spotting, mostly to endpapers and text block edge and the occasional mark to pages. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Egypt: Three Essays on the History, Religion and Art of Ancient Egypt

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company. The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1892. First edition. Royal 8vo (10 x 6-1/2 inches). Colored map of the Nile delta and 32 collotype plates from photos. [8], 86 pp. Publisher's vellum, designed by Sarah Wyman Whitman, with tall, gilt lotus device on upper cover, gilt decorated spine. Vellum a bit soiled and foxed. With the engraved bookplate of Theodor Low De Vinne, printer, typographer, and historian of printing . Brimmer, a Boston businessman and one of the founders of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, travelled to Egypt in 1890 with his niece, Mrs. John Jay [Minna Timmins] Chapman, and the two co-authored these little essays. Brimmer was a close friend of fellow Bostonian Sarah Wyman Whitman, and her design for the binding of his book - whose appearance breathes the spirit of the 90s and the Art and Crafts Movement - represents one of her greatest triumphs. At the time the book was in press, Daniel Berkeley Updike was supervising The Riverside Press in Cambridge. The presence of De Vinne's bookplate provides a remarkable association, given that Updike's first private commission (THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER) was printed in the same year by De Vinne himself

[Broadside]: Mrs. Carrie F. Young of Berkeley, Cal. Will Speak to the Citizens on the Subject: People's Party from a Woman's Standpoint and at 2 P. M. to the Ladies, Dates to be Announced on the Subject of Money-Famine, and Why

Cubery & Co. Printers S[an]. F[rancisco].: Cubery & Co., Printers. [1892]. First. Broadside. Printed on yellow paper. Approximately 12" x 18". Small tears and a few modest nicks mostly along the upper margin, with one longer tear, none of them affecting any text. The broadside provides a schedule of Young's lectures in various places in Northern California: Yreka, Chico, Briggs, Dunsmuir, Redding, Sissions (now Mount Shasta), and others. Printed on thin paper, very good and something of a surprising survivor. Carrie F. Young, a Berkeley resident, was a medical doctor and active lecturer on various subjects in California and the Pacific Northwest from around 1870 through the late 1890s. She was the editor of the Woman's Pacific Coast Journal from 1870-1872, and often lectured on physiological and health reform, and while embracing temperance, was apparently a sore disappointment to the more religious of the temperance crusaders who wished to count her among their membership without success. She was at least in one instance accused of links to spiritualism. She advocated for women's suffrage in her lectures as early as 1872. The People's Party was a reformist populist third party that enjoyed some successes in California in the second half of the 19th Century. OCLC locates a single copy, at UC Berkeley. .

Untersuchungen ueber die Ausbreitung der elektrischen Kraft. Mit 40 Figuren im Text.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1892. 8vo. Contemporary half cloth. VI, (2), 295, (1) pp. Upper part of joints neatly repaired, otherwise a clean and fresh copy.. First edition of Hertz' seminal book on electromagnetic waves, which laid the foundation of radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony. While investigating Maxwell's conception of light as an electromagnetic phenomenon, Hertz exposed that waves of electricity could both be transmitted and received through space. This had profound consequences and led, amongst other things, to Marconi's perfection of wireless telegraphy. "His [Hertz'] discovery of the properties of reflection, refraction, and polarization in electricity, with this wave theory of electrical motion, laid the foundation of radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony." (Milestones of Science, p 47.)"Experimental proof by Hertz of the Faraday-Maxwell hypothesis that electrical waves can be projected through space was begun in 1887, eight years after Maxwell's death. The two main requirements were (a) a method of producing the waves, supposing that they existed, and (b) a method of detecting them once they were produced." (PMM, 377.)"Hertz's researches on electrical waves vindicated the Helmholtz ideal of the physicist as one whose competences embraced both experiment and mathematics. Hertz entered physics at the right time for one of his abilities to make a critical contribution; because the outstanding problem of physics was the disorderly condition of electrodynamics, what was needed was someone with the theoretical power to analyze the competing theories and with the experimental judgment to produce the evidence that would persuade the physical community that a decision between the theories had been reached." (DSB, VI, 348b.)"In the early 1890's the young inventor Guglielmo Marconi read of Hertz's electric wave experiments in an Italian electrical journal and began considering the Possibility of communication by wireless waves. Hertz's work initiated a technological development as momentous as it physical counterpart." (DSB, VI, 349a.).Honeyman, No. 1668 - PMM 377 - Sparrow, Milestones of Science Nr. 101
