AUTUMN

1892. Edited by H.G.O. Blake. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1892. Original dark green cloth with facsimile signature in gilt, beveled. First Edition, which consisted of only 1020 copies (Borst says there were only 500, but Blanck's figure is more likely). This was the last of Thoreau's four "seasons" to be posthumously published from his journal: EARLY SPRING had come out in 1881, followed by SUMMER in 1884; curiously, WINTER came next, in 1888. Even using Blanck's larger number of copies, AUTUMN is one of the two scarcest (EARLY SPRING consisted of 1018 copies, while the other two consisted of 1260 and 1550 respectively).~This is a bright copy, fine with just a bit of rubbing at the extremities. With the bookplate of Henry Hornblower, plus part of the small Brentano's booklabel (probably from this copy's initial sale). Borst A11.1.a; Blanck 20130.

        Favorite Flies & Their Histories

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, 1892. First Edition, first issue, with date "1892" on title-page. Thick 8vo. Illustrated with 32 color plates of flies, engravings of natural insects & 8 photos. viii, [ii], 521 pp. Bound in three quarters morocco and marbled boards. Ownership of Alfred A. Kiggins. About fine. Wetzel p. 180; Goodspeed, p. 276 et seq.; Bruns M40 . The classic work of late nineteenth century American fly fishing. An interesting and attractive book, "an important work on the flies in use during the latter past of the nineteenth century - exquisite colored plates -" (Wetzel), which went into several editions. It was written (and compiled from her father's correspondence) by the daughter of Charles F. Orvis, famed American tackle-maker and author of "Fishing With the Fly" (1883). Goodspeed notes that while Mrs. Marbury was "not herself a fisher-woman", she was an expert at making flies, which she tied without the aid of a vise. Much of the book consists of the replies her father received from anglers to whom he had posed questions concerning the sport

The Principles and Practice of Medicine

New York: Appleton and Company. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE IN ORIGINAL CLOTH of Osler's magnum opus: "One of the most influential textbooks of general medicine ever written" (Norman). "During his first four years in Baltimore, Osler had relatively few duties. The routine work in the hospital being performed by his residents, he was free to devote more time to writing. The principal result was his Principles and Practice of Medicine, published to great acclaim in 1892. Dedicated to his early teachers, Johnson, Bovell, and Howard, it was one of the last single-authored textbooks to cover the whole of medicine. Although Osler later complained that effecting the revisions for subsequent editions was a millstone around his neck, it turned a national physician into an international figure. It was eventually translated into French, German, Spanish, and Chinese and went through eight editions during Osler's lifetime..." (Dictionary of National Biography). "The timing of the textbook was almost perfect. Principles and Practice was at once a monument to the achievements of nineteenth-century scientific medicine and a gateway to the twentieth century. Osler had mastered the mainstream clinicopathological tradition of the past seventy years. He was thoroughly up on the bacteriological work of the 1880s that had solved such a central conundrum in the etiology of infectious disease. With a few exceptions, his accounts of the natural history of disease still make sense, in some instances are considered classic. In 1892 the endocrine system had not been understood, the body's immune system was still a mystery, viruses could not be identified, principles of nutrition and genetics were largely unknown, and x-rays, electrocardiographs, and scores of other diagnostic devices had not yet been developed" (Bliss, William Osler: A Life in Medicine). First sate, with the misspelling "Georgias" on page vi. With ads dated March 1892. There are first state copies with ads dated November 1891 and March 1892; both were printed and distributed by March 17, 1892. There were 3000 copies printed of the first state. (Sir WIlliam Osler: An Annotated Bibliography, 1375). New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1892. Thick octavo, original cloth rebacked with original spine laid down. Handsome bookplate of Harry Hyland Kerr on front pastedown and ownership signature of James Kerr dated 1892 on front free endpaper. James and Harry Hyland Kerr were noted Canadian-American surgeons. Some light rubbing to cloth, a few pages with repairs to outer text edge. RARE IN ORIGINAL CLOTH.

ACROSS THIBET: being a translation of "De Paris au Tonkin à travers le Tibet inconnu." (IN ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S PRINTED DUST JACKET)

New York: Cassell, 1892. Bonvalot, Gabriel. ACROSS THIBET: being a translation of "De Paris au Tonkin à travers le Tibet inconnu." Translated by C. B. Pitman. New York: Cassell Publishing Company, (1892). First American Edition, in one volume. AN ASTONISHING COPY in original publisher's decorated cloth, almost completely unworn (although noticeably foxed on both covers and spines) with the ORIGINAL COLORED FOLDING MAP in the front pocket, so often missing (fresh, with only two minor nicks). Furthermore this copy remains IN THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S PRINTED DUST JACKET (some soiling, wear, closed tears, the lower quadrant of the DJ's spine panel has gone missing). Generously illustrated throughout, many full page, inspired by photographs taken by Prince Henry d'Orleans. Inner hinges tight and uncracked for such a large, heavy book. Bonvalot (1853-1933) was a French explorer, author, and legislator. In 1889 he set out to make an unparalleled journey via the most primitive means from France to French Indochina. Accompanying the seasoned explorer (unquestionably equal to England's Younghusband and Swedin's Hedin in terms of Tibetan exploration) was Prince Henri d’Orleans, a young aristocrat with a craving for adventure and a talent for photography. After crossing Russia, the Frenchmen mounted up in Siberia, then headed south towards Tibet. The resultant equestrian winter journey across the Tibetan plain and the Himalayan mountains is nearly too arduous to believe. Before his journey was over, Bonvalot had ridden across Siberia, the Takla Makan desert, Tibet and China, reaching Hanoi in little more than a year after setting off from Paris. This astonishing journey, which has never again been attempted, inspired Jules Verne to use Bonvalot as the role model of his intrepid fictional reporter, Claudius Bombarnac. The Long Rider's Guild Press has recently reprinted the book determined to show that fact is often more remarkable than fiction. A most appealing copy. For those interested in fictional Tibet, we do have fiction in stock: several different editions of James Hilton's LOST HORIZON (including the original manuscript). First American Edition. Fine/Good to Very Good.

Royal 8vo, publisher’s original polished cloth over tan polished buckram, the spine with lettering label printed in brick-red and black. [8], 333 pp. A fine, bright and handsome copy with just a hint of age evidence. VERY SCARCE LARGE PAPER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS MONUMENTAL WORK. He, like Nelson of the British nation, was a personification of the highest development of naval power in the world. This work treats his entire life from childhood to his famed exploits on the U.S.S. Essex and the brilliant campaigns of the American Civil War. Like John Paul Jones in the 18th century and Chester Nimitz in the 20th, he represented the U.S. Navy of the 19th Century in the finest manner. Capt. Mahan was the leading naval historian of his time as well as being a distinguished officer and President of the United States Naval War College. His other outstanding works include THE LIFE OF NELSON, THE EMBODIMENT OF THE SEA POWER OF GREAT BRITAIN; THE INFLUENCE OF SEA POWER UPON HISTORY 1660-1783; THE INFLUENCE OF SEA POWER UPON THE FRENCH REVOLUTION AND EMPIRE 1793-1812; THE INTEREST OF AMERICA IN SEA POWER, PRESENT AND FUTURE; SEA POWER IN ITS RELATION TO THE WAR OF 1812 and a number of other important works.

Mapa De Los Ferro Carriles De La Repblica Argentina...

Buenos Aires, Direccin de Ferro Carriles Nacionales, 1892. Printed color topographical map, four parts of eighteen sections each, backed with linen. Each part consists of a single horizontal fold and nine vertical folds and isattached to its covers at the lower left section. Each section measures 8.25 x 12.25 inches. Each unfolded part of 18 sections measures 24.5 inches high by 74.5 inches wide, the entire map unfolds to eight feet two inches in height and six feet two inches wide. Title continues: Y De Los Paises Limtrofes. Construido segun los datos instrucciones suministrados por el Presidente de la Direccion Dor Don Luis Faraoz por el Ingeniero Gegrafo Dor Jos Chavanne. The four parts are bound in embossed green cloth covers printed in gold. Despite a bit of old worming and minor stains, the map is handsome and brilliant. Scale: 1: 1,000,000. Oval stamp of the DFCN near the cartouche. The map encompasses approximately 41 South latitude to approx. 20 S. latitude, and approx. 53 West longitude to a little beyond 73 W. latitude. This includes Chile along its entire western border, in some cases to the Pacific, and parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Railroad lines are shown as far south as Baha Nueva in Chubut on the east coast and a bit inland from Valdivia (Chile) in the west; in the north Asuncin is the farthest inland reach, and both completed and projected sections of the Transandine (Valparaiso toBuenos Aires) line are shown (the last tunnel was completed in 1909). Development ofrailways in Argentina dates from 1857 and was mostly supported by private companies largely controlled in England, about 15% being owned and operated by the government. Produced following an investment crisis in 1890, this map may have been intended toencourage support of an already well developed transportation system carrying thepastoral and agricultural products of Argentina?s steadily developing export trade, which contributed greatly to maintaining the country?s economic stability. Besides showing railways, the large scale on which this map was produced allows acomprehensive view of the country and its physical peculiarities. Dry rivers, mountain peaks, saline lakes, central plateaus, the Gran Chaco, countless rivers? allareshown with the detail and elevations one expects from railroad survey expeditions. Stock#NS0156.
