Perlen aus der Instrumenten-Sammlung von Paul de Wit, Leipzig

16 plates in photochromolithography. Title printed in red & black. 1 p.l., 14 pp. Oblong folio, orig. board wrappers, & preserved in what appears to be a specially made binding of pink velvet (upper cover now slightly faded to light brown, spine with a little wear), upper cover with central sunken panel with a reproduction of four musicians, elaborate metalwork in each corner. Leipzig: [Privately Published] by de Wit, [1892]. Presentation copy, bound in what I believe is a deluxe presentation binding, inscribed on the title "Souvenir de l'éditeur à M. le dr. Maurice Emmanuel de Paris. Paul de Wit. Leipsic, le 26 Octobre 1897." De Wit (1852-1925), a member of a wealthy Maastricht family, was a viol player and collector of musical instruments; he edited the Zeitschrift für Instrumentenbau in which early instruments were discussed in great detail. De Wit made a number of collections of early musical instruments and the present catalogue contains photographs of the most important pieces in his then-collection. Several hundred instruments are depicted in rich and vivid color. The recipient of this copy was Maurice Emmanuel (1862-1938), French composer and musicologist and one of the genuine independents in French music. A fine copy. ❧ New Grove, Vol., 6, pp. 154-55 & Vol. 20, pp. 464. .

The ALS from Cyrus Field tipped in opposite the frontispiece portrait of him. Dated 26th May, 1881 at Field's office at 145 Broadway, New York, Field writes to D B Ivison Esq. The text of the letter appears to be in a secretarial hand with Field's own calligraphic signature, slightly smudged. The letter is tipped into the gutter and from the marginal glue staining would appear to have been their for a century or more. The book comes with an original piece of the first atlantic cable ! Cyrus West Field and the Atlantic Telegraph Company were behind the construction of the first transatlantic telegraph cable. The first was laid across the floor of the Atlantic from Telegraph Field, Foilhommerum Bay, Valentia Island in western Ireland to Heart's Content in eastern Newfoundland. The project began in 1854 and was completed in 1858. The cable functioned for only three weeks, but it was the first such project to yield practical results. The first official telegram to pass between two continents was a letter of congratulation from Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom to the President of the United States James Buchanan on August 16. Signal quality declined rapidly, slowing transmission to an almost unusable speed. The cable was destroyed the following month when Wildman Whitehouse applied excessive voltage to it while trying to achieve faster operation. (It has been argued that the faulty manufacture, storage and handling of the 1858 cable would have led to premature failure in any case.) The cable's rapid failure undermined public and investor confidence and delayed efforts to restore a connection. A second attempt was undertaken in 1865 with much-improved material and, following some setbacks, a connection was completed and put into service on July 28, 1866. This cable proved more durable. Before the first transatlantic cable, communications between Europe and the Americas took place only by ship. Sometimes, however, severe winter storms delayed ships for weeks. The transatlantic cable reduced communication time considerably, allowing a message and a response in the same day. Five attempts to lay a cable were made over a nine-year period ?- one in 1857, two in 1858, one in 1865, and one in 1866. Lasting connections were finally achieved with the 1866 cable and the 1865 cable, which was repaired by Isambard Kingdom Brunel's ship the SS Great Eastern, captained by Sir James Anderson. In the 1870s duplex and quadruplex transmission and receiving systems were set up that could relay multiple messages over the cable. Additional cables were laid between Foilhommerum and Heart's Content in 1873, 1874, 1880, and 1894. By the end of the 19th century, British-, French-, German-, and American-owned cables linked Europe and North America in a sophisticated web of telegraphic communications. (Wikipedia)

[Dance Card or Carnet du Bal] Ball der Stadt Wien 7 Februar 1892

Vienna: August Klein, 1892. Morocco, with composite material mount on boards. Very Good Plus. An elaborate Renaissance styled leather dance card, with brass mount ornamentation.Oblong, 9 by 13 cm. Setting this dance card apart from the norm is that it is more like a small book within, with 27 leaves, plus an actual card, and each of the leaves is enriched with B/W illustrations on the rectos. Each of these pages is dedicated to one of the dances, and on most pages, there is a photographic oval cameo of the composer (or composer and lyricist), with the balance of the page given over to illustration(s) of the dance, or a scene somehow evocative of the dance or its spirit. The style of these etched drawings, and the ornamentation that frames and graces them, is very typical of the late nineteenth century and complements the Renaissance Revival relief work on the cover. The front and rear cover have gilt lined rectangular plaques for the title and date. The pencil which also holds the card closed has a brass finial at the top. A pink and white twine runs through the spine and can be suspended by a hook attached to a lady's garment, as usual, and the twine has a decorative tassel as well. Suspended below is a red wax medallion encased in wood, and this is attached to a red and white ribbon. Light rubbing to the leather. The ribbon holding the medal is torn in one place and held together with but a thread. One of two pencil stays partially torn.

        Manual de Ministros de Indios

265-480 pages with 2 plates, illustrations, tables. Quarto (11 1/2" x 8 3/4") bound in quarter red leather, marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. From the library of Professor George M Foster. Pagination follows its publication in a volume of the Anales del Museo Nacional de Mexioc. First edition.Jacinto de la Serna was a 17th-century priest who recorded extensive information regarding the survival of native religious customs. Born in Mexico, he gained a doctorate in theology at the University of Mexico, of which he was later rector three times. As a young priest he served for 14 years in parishes of the Indians during the same time that Ruiz de Alarcon was making his investigations. He spent most of his later career in Mexico City, where he was one of the curates of the cathedral during three periods. He held important offices in the administrations of the archdiocese. He served as visitor general of the archdiocese under two archbishops. In 1656 he composed a work entitled Manual de ministros de indios para el conocimiento de sus idolatrias y extirpacion de ellas first published in 1892, in which he drew together the fruits of his own experience and the results of his studies. The purpose of the work was to acquaint the religious ministers with the superstitions of the Indians, so that they could better instruct their Indian charges. The work may be divided into four parts. In chapters 1-5 he traces the history of the efforts to put an end native religious practices. In this section he gives valuable details of his own activities and of those of his predecessors, such as Pedro Ponce de Leon and Hernando Ruiz de Alarcon. Chapters 6-11 are a study of the Aztec calendar, for which he drew heavily on Martin de Leon. Boturini later used some of his material. Chapters 12-27 treat of religious beliefs and practices of the Indians. Large sections were take directly or in paraphrase from Ruiz de Alarcon, including the latter's translations of Indian chants and prayers. Chapters 28-33 propose remedies against the continued practice of the native religions.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Foster's stamp to title. Some extremity rubbing, boards slightly bowed else a very good copy.

Description of the Star Camera, at the Sydney Observatory

Sydney: S.T Leigh & Co., 1892. Quarto, with a photograph and seven large lithograph plates; original red cloth, some browning and a few institutional stamps, a good copy recased with new endpapers. An overview of an important piece of astronomical instrumentation. The principal observatories in New South Wales during the nineteenth century were at Sydney and Parramatta, and from the 1890s to the 1930s an astrometric camera was run as a field station by Sydney Observatory at Red Hill, which today is Observatory Park, Pennant Hills. The author of this rare work was the Government Astronomer from 1870, who was responsible for some of the major astronomical programmes undertaken in Australia during the nineteenth century. His book shows details of the camera that was used at Red Hill for photographing the Milky Way and for gaining experience in stellar photography. Russell's work with photography was of great importance: see Holden, Photography in Colonial Australia, pp. 61-3 for further details.

The Color Printer. A treatise on the use of colors in typographic printing.

      - Cincinnati, Earhart & Richardson 1892. Quarto publisher's decorated grey cloth blocked in gold and black with three colour onlays; 137pp and 90 plates, all but a couple colour and those embossed anyway, other illustrations and decorations through the text, many of these in colour. Minor signs of use and wear around the edges, the occasional spot, a rather good copy. A most pleasing book, the absolute standard for American colour printing of the late 19th century and something of an encyclopaedia of the aesthetic style in printing. Not a rare book but it has always been hard to find in decent condition.

Rare Autograph! Joseph Pulitzer pays a $400 dividend to John A. Cockerill, editor of the ?St. Louis Post-Dispatch? ? endorsed by Cockerill

"Partly Printed Check Signed ?Joseph Pulitzer? in red ink, 8? x 3?. Office of the Post-Dispatch, St. Louis, May 27, 1892. Filled out in another hand to John A. Cockerill Esq. ?dividend? penned in red in unknown hand. Pictorial logo at left. Endorsed ?John A. Cockerill? on verso. Folds. Fine condition.John A. Cockerill (1845-1896) became editor of the ?St. Louis Post-Dispatch? in 1878. In October 1882, at a political rally, lawyer Alonzo Slayback, whose partner was running for Congress, had called the paper ?blackmailers.? In the ?Post-Dispatch,? Cockerill called Slayback a ?coward.? On October 13, 1882, less than five months after endorsing this check, Slayback went to Cockerill?s office and, after a short conversation, pulled a gun from his pocket and aimed it at Cockerill who grabbed his pistol and fired, killing Slayback. Cockerill was tried for murder. Newspapers took sides. The jury?s verdict was ?justifiable homicide committed in self-defense.? After the trial, the ?Post-Dispatch? saw a drop in circulation and number of advertisers. Pulitzer reassigned Cockerill to be editor of his newly acquired ?New York World.? Joseph Pulitzer?s eyes began to fail in the 1880s and by the end of the decade, at age 42, he was virtually blind. Autograph material authentically signed by Pulitzer has rarely appeared on the market. In fact, before this item became available, only one Joseph Pulitzer signed document or letter had appeared at a major public auction in at least the last 25 years."

Paris: Librairie de l'Art Independant, 1892.. Three quarter blue crushed levant and marbled boards, raised bands, t.e.g., original wrappers bound in. Some minor rubbing to raised bands, otherwise fine. First edition of this early work in Regnier's transition from the PARNASSIAN tradition to marked symbolist leanings. This is an out of series, unnumbered copy on Hollande, in addition to twenty numbered copies, and bears his signed presentation inscription to his close friend, Francis Viele-Griffin, the American-born writer who moved to France at the age of eight and became one of the leading theoreticians and representatives of the French Symbolist movement. In 1890, Regnier, Viele- Griffin, Paul Adam and Bernard Lazare founded the journal, ENTRETIENS POLITIQUES ET LITTERAIRES, which became the leading vehicle for expression of Symbolist poetics. A very good association copy.

Neue Studien ueber Hypnotismus, Suggestion und Psychotherapie... Uebersetzt von Dr. Sigm. Freud

Leipzig & Vienna: Deuticke, 1892. BERNHEIM, Hippolyte (1840-1919). Neue Studien ueber Hypnotismus, Suggestion and Psychotherapie .. . Uebersetzt von Dr. Sigm. FREUD. 8vo. xii, 380pp. 245 x 165 mm. Contemporary cloth-backed boards. Ex library but a very good copy. Leipzig & Vienna: Deuticke, 1892. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN, translated by Freud and one of his earliest contributions to psychiatry. See Garrison-Morton 4999. Bernheim opposed Charcot's view of hypnosis and emphasized the verbal, cultural and emotional in treating hysteria. Freud was very much impressed with him: "I went to Nancy in the summer of 1889 where I spent several weeks. I witnessed the astonishing experiments performed by Bernheim on his hospital patients, and it is there that I experienced the strongest impressions relating to the possible use of powerful psychical processes which remained hidden from human consciousness. I had many interesting discussions with him and I undertook to translate into German his two works on suggestion and its therapeutic effects" (quoted in D.S.B.). Grinstein 316.
