Jena: Gustav Fischer,, 1892. Octavo (242 × 165 mm), pp. (4), 59. Publisher's orange printed paper wrappers Ownership stamp of Dr Paul Hammerschlag, an Austrian author on taxation, to front wrapper. Wrappers lightly soiled, lower wrapper a little frayed along fore edge; an excellent copy, uncut and largely unopened. First separate edition.         The Color Printer A Treatise

1892. EARHART, John. The Color Printer. A Treatise on the Use of Colors in Typographic Printing. 137 pp. Illustrated with 90 plates. 4to., bound in light bluish-grey publisher's cloth, decorated on spine and front cover in six colours, emblem containing three overlapping ink balls on cover and spine, and floral-printed endpapers. Cincinnati: Earhart and Richardson, 1892. A spectacular piece of nineteenth-century American colour printing. "Justly famous for its beauty and utility... Marvellous plates often hinting of Art Nouveau, Earhart offered demonstrations of color mixing, color-harmonies, and color printing in its various phases and recorded the actual proportions of inks used. Vignettes, letters, designs, and whole variety of plates are rendered in most of the common color processes, and some of them are embossed." The dedication paged is signed by Earhart. There is the slightest rubbing to head and foot of spine, otherwise in fine condition. A fine copy. Yale Library Gazette, July 1974, p. 16.

        The Art of Golf

Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1892. _. Half Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Second edition. Complete with all 20 photographic plates and two pages of advertising. Half-leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Spine has five raised bands with gilt rules and lettering. Sound binding with intact hinges. Clean pages and plats. Per Murdoch 699: "one of the great classic books of golf literature, it includes the first use of photographs to demonstrate the swing. . . . 'the most entertaining book ever written about the foibles of the human golfer. . . . indeed, fine golf literature'" Simpson was the first to advance the idea that golf originated from bored shepherds striking rocks with their crooks, explain how the term 'links' was related to sheep herding, and note that the work 'putt' came from the idea of putting a ball (or rock) into a hole (or scrape) in the ground.         Hohere Algebra. Manuscript transcription of Konigsberger's lectures

Heidelberg, 1892. Königsberger, Leo (1837-1921). Höhere Algebra. Akademische Vorträge . . . W: 1891 1892 S. Bound manuscript, written in a neat German hand. Title (in black letter) and 735 numbered pages. N.p. [Heidelberg], ca. 1892. 206 x 164 mm. Half morocco, mottled boards c. 1892, light wear, one corner bumped. A few pencil annotations in the margins. Ownership signature of "Heinrich H[illeg.], stud. math., Heidelberg" on the verso of the front free endpaper.A unique record of the academic work of Königsberger, one of the most famous mathematicians of his time. Königsberger spent most of his career at the University of Heidelberg, where he taught mathematics from 1869 to 1875 and again from 1884 until his retirement in 1914. He contributed to several fields of mathematics, most notably analysis and analytical mechanics. "Königsberger . . . was extremely skillful in treating material from the Riemannian point of view, as can be seen from his textbooks on elliptic functions (1874) and hyperelliptic integrals (1878). In addition he worked intensively on the theory of differential equations. This subject, which grew out of function theory, is associated especially with Lazarus Fuchs, with whom Königsberger was friendly during his youth. Königsberger was the first to treat not merely one differential equation, but an entire system of such equations in complex variables (DSB)."While at Heidelberg Königsberger became close friends with the chemist Robert Bunsen and physicists Hermann Helmholtz and Gustav Kirchhoff; these contacts provided him with the stimulation for his series of works on the differential equations of analytical mechanics. He also published some notable historic works, including an account of his teacher Weierstrass's first lecture on elliptic functions (1917) and a biography of Helmholtz (1902).The present manuscript is a transcription of Königsberger's lectures on higher algebra given at Heidelberg during the academic year 1891-92; it was most likely prepared by the mathematics student who inscribed his name in the volume. The lectures were not published, and we can find no record of any similar manuscript transcriptions in either OCLC or the Karlsruhe database. Dictionary of Scientific Biography.

An uncommon title in the Great War series (uniform with the MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT). A contemporary reviewer in the Atlantic Monthly said, "His book is such as our knowledge of him prepared us to expect, and it is a treat....His style is characteristic of the man. It is absolutely free from rhetorical ornament, and it does not hesitate to be colloquial in the extreme, but it is admirable in its clearness and directness.....he appends a concluding chapter on the military lessons of the war, which is full of knowledge, wisdom, and sound sense." An important record of inestimable historical importance.

(Wetzel), which went into several editions. It was written (and compiled from her father's correspondence) by the daughter of Charles F. Orvis, famed American tackle-maker and author of "Fishing With the Fly" (1883). Goodspeed notes that while Mrs. Marbury was "not herself a fisher-woman", she was an expert at making flies, which she tied without the aid of a vise. Much of the book consists of the replies her father received from anglers to whom he had posed questions concerning the sport.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wohl Paris, o. D. - 1 ½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Maps to Accompany the Journal of the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1891-2

Adelaide: Surveyor General's Office, 1891-, 1892. Two large folding lithographic maps housed within the original printed card covers, splendidly preserved in a custom-made quarter blue morocco bookform box. Splendid central desert charts. Two splendid large maps of the central desert, rich in geographical and geological detail. The maps were issued as part of first published report of the Elder Scientific Expedition of 1891, and cover the arid interior on the border of Western and South Australia. The expedition was privately funded by Sir Thomas Elder, who had earlier bankrolled the first great desert journey of Ernest Giles. It was led by surveyor general David Lindsay, a celebrated explorer of the Northern Territory. Lindsay took charge of the Elder Scientific Expedition with the stated intention of exploring the unknown interior of Western Australia between the routes laid out by Forrest in 1874 and Giles in 1875 'for the purpose of completing the exploration of Australia'. The expedition travelled 2,745 miles through unexplored country, mapping 80,000 square miles. Sadly, the men were besieged by internal conflict and all but one member of the scientific team resigned. This marked an abrupt end to Lindsay's career as an explorer.

Young, a Berkeley resident, was a medical doctor and active lecturer on various subjects in California and the Pacific Northwest from around 1870 through the late 1890s. She was the editor of the Woman's Pacific Coast Journal from 1870-1872, and often lectured on physiological and health reform, and while embracing temperance, was apparently a sore disappointment to the more religious of the temperance crusaders who wished to count her among their membership without success. She was at least in one instance accused of links to spiritualism. She advocated for women's suffrage in her lectures as early as 1872. The People's Party was a reformist populist third party that enjoyed some successes in California in the second half of the 19th Century. OCLC locates a single copy, at UC Berkeley. .
