        Lehrbuch des Pandektenrechts.

Frankfurt am Main, Literarische Anstalt Bütten & Loening, 1891. 7., durchgesehene und vermehrte Aufl. 3 Bde. 8vo. In seinem Brief vom 18. Auflage arbeitete Windscheid unablässig an seinem Opus maximum. Korin gafu

Kyoto: Unsodo, 1891. Taniguchi Kokyo after Ogata Korin. Oblong folio. (14)ff. Contains twelve woodblock prints in bright colors and gold and silver metallic ink by Taniguchi Kokyo after Ogata Korin in the Rinpa style. Rinpa artists worked in a variety of formats, including screens, fans, and hanging scrolls; the images in this volume include nine designs for folding fans and three vertical designs that could have been used for hanging scrolls or panels. The designs show a mix of natural subjects, such as gold flowers and deep red maple leaves, to human figures, such as a group of cantankerous priests. There are also two designs showing women in elegant flowing kimonos, and one breathtaking fan of tumultous waves crested in silver against a gold background. Compared to the bold fan designs, the three panels at the end of the volume are quieter, using of bokashi printing to render subtle brown and black ink washes for the three sparse nature scenes: a solitary deer in autumn, a small group of cranes, and a bright white crane against a gold background. This last image especially is very characteristic of the Rinpa style, which usually place simple natural subjects against a background filled with gold leaf. The images are preceded by an introduction and a page of seals in black and red, and followed by a colophon in red. The Rinpa style of painting was created in the late seventeenth century and consolidated by the Ogata brothers, Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan. The style experienced a resurgence in the early nineteenth century thanks to the efforts of Sakai Hoitsu and his students. In the late 1880's, Taniguchi Kokyo undertook a study of the Rinpa legacy, and the descendents of Sakai Hoitsu allowed Kokyo to see and copy original Ogata Korin paintings that had remained in the family. The copies of those designs became the basis of this book, and helped to spur a revival of the Rinpa style in Kyoto. Taniguchi Kokyo was a student of Kono Bairei, and later went on to teach art at the Kyoto School of Art in 1894 and also at the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting from 1909 to 1912. This important collection of designs is bound in mica-patterned gray paper, with tassel-style ties. Dampstains and wear to covers, and the original title label has been removed. Remnants of orange cloth to spine, and some off-setting and foxing throughout the interior. An important work from this Kyoto artist.

        Lapsus Calami

Cambridge: Macmillan and Bowes, 1891. First edition. Very Good. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (some pushing to the spine ends and light fading to the cloth extremities, modest rubbing to the spine ends and board corners) in a Very Good example of the rare dust jacket (modest soiling, some short tears, and only a bit of loss, creasing to the rear flap), of this small volume by James Kenneth Stephen here writing as J. K. S., and perhaps the only copy to survive in jacket. James Kenneth Stephen was an English Poet, cousin to Virginia Woolf, and tutor to Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Albert Victor who was the eldest son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later to become Edward VII, King of England). This slim volume contains Stephen's famous poem "To R.K." (Rudyard Kipling), a Poem which Kipling mentioned in his Autobiography "Something of Myself, For My Friends Known and Unknown" (Macmillan & Co, 1937). There, reviewing his career, Kipling called Stephen "that genius" and referred to Stephen's poem --- contained here for the first time in book form --- in which Stephen deplored the state of contemporary writing: Kipling stating "And I had the additional luck of not being taken seriously for some time. People talked, quite reasonably, of rockets and sticks; and that genius, J.K.S., brother to Herbert Stephen, dealt with Haggard and me in some stanzas which I would have given much to have written myself. They breathed a prayer for better days when: - ' The world shall cease to wonder / at the genius of an Ass, / And a boy's eccentric blunder / Shall not bring success to pass: / when there stands a muzzled stripling, / Mute beside a muzzled bore: / When the Rudyards cease from Kipling / and the Haggards Ride no more'." Kipling further stated "It ran joyously through all the papers. It still hangs faintly in the air and, as I used to warn Haggard, may continue as an aroma when all but our two queer names are forgotten." Subsequent to Stephen's "To R. K.", Kipling went on to win the 1907 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first English language writer to win the Prize. ["Lapsus Calami" means a slip of the pen and Haggard, of course, is H. Rider Haggard.] A Very Good copy in considerably better condition than any other copy we ever have seen and rather scarce as such. We have never seen or heard of another copy in the original dust jacket. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        Cranford

London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1891. - One of the Great Pre-Feminist NovelsBy One of the Great Female British NovelistsIn a Beautiful 'Kelliegram' Binding[KELLIEGRAM BINDING] GASKELL, Mrs. Cranford. With a Preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie and Illustrations by Hugh Thomson. London and New York: Macmillan & Co., 1891. Hugh Thomson-illustrated edition. Octavo (6 15/16 x 4 1/2 in; 176 x 114 mm). xxx, 297, [1] pp. 111 black and white illustrations including frontispiece, head- and tailpieces, and historiated initials. Contemporary binding by Kelly & Son (stamp-signed Kelliegram Binding London) to rear turn-in full green morocco with a portrait inlay of Mr. Jenkyns, partially reproducing the illustration on page 108, in black, blue, grey, dark and light brown, and ivory calf against a charming pictorially gilt village background to upper cover. Lower cover with pictorial inlay of a sedan chair in blue, light and dark brown, and grey calf. Raised bands with gilt dots, compartments with gilt panel within gilt borders. Turn-ins with gilt rules and gilt corner pieces. Red cloth liners and end-leaves. All edges gilt. Minimal sunning to spine. A beautiful and very fine example.Cranford, which originally appeared as a serial in Charles Dickens' magazine, Household Words, 1851-53, and saw its first publication in book form in 1853, is "a series of linked sketches of life among the ladies of a quiet country village in the 1830s.The greatest charm of Cranford, which has kept it unfailingly popular, is its amused but loving portrait of the old-fashioned customs and 'elegant economy' of a delicately observed group of middle-aged figures in a landscape" (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865), a "strong and independent-minded woman" (The Feminist Companion to Literature), was an important proto-Feminist writer who often tackled unorthodox subjects in her novels. Cranford, for example, concerns a community of spinsters who glory in their freedom from male interference. Mrs. Gaskell was "'.the most popular, with small question, the most powerful and finished female novelist of an epoch singularly rich in female novelists'" (Enclyclopedia of British Women Writers, p. 264, citing Mrs. Gaskell's obituary in The Athenaeum)."Critical awareness of Gaskell as a social historian is now more balanced by awareness of her innovativeness and artistic development as a novelist. While scholars continue to debate the precise nature of her talent, they also reaffirm the singular attractiveness of her best works" (ibid) of which Cranford is one.The beautifully inlaid and colorful "Kelliegram bindings were one of many innovations of the English commercial binding firm of Kelly & Sons. The Kelly family had one of the longest connections in the history of the binding trade in London, having been founded in 1770 by John Kellie, as the name was then spelled. The binding firm was carried on by successive members of the family into the 1930s. William Henry Kelly significantly developed the company in the first half of the nineteenth century, followed by William Henry, Jr., Henry, and Hubert Kelly, who took control in 1892, taking the firm into the twentieth century The development [during the 1880s] that came to be known as Kelliegram was one of the bindery's most notable, and the popularity continues today as demonstrated by the prices Kelliegram bindings command at auction and in the rare book trade" [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bel exemplaire.

New Light on Dark Africa: Being the Narrative of the German Emin Pasha Expedition

London: Ward, Lock, and Co, 1891. 1st Edition in English. Hardcover. Fine. frontis (portrait), illustrations, folding map (in cover pocket), index, xviii, (1), 597p. Original reddish brown pictorial cloth. 22cm. The only bits of wear we noticed were a small chip on the free front endpaper and some browning of the tissue guard for the frontis. Translated from the original German by H. W. Dulcken. A superb copy of this scarce work which has one of the most visually appealing covers you will see on any publisher's trade edition. Peters was a bit of an adventurer and his actions on this expedition may or may not have been sanctioned. At any rate, Germany and Great Britain concluded the second Anglo-German Agreement on July 1, 1890 under which any claims to East African territory secured by Peters for German were casually abandoned by the Germans. Peters was later sent to Africa as a German colonial official but highhanded mistreatment of Africans led to his dismissal and forfeiture of his pension rights. Undaunted, Peters moved to England and continued as an adventurer and promoter.

SHIRE YEHUDAH = SONGS OF JUDAH: A COLLECTION OF SACRED SONGS FOR SOLI AND CHORUSES WITH ORGAN ACCOMPANIMENT FOR SABBATH MORNING AND EVENING SERVICES: SECOND VOLUME

New Orleans; Fred. E. Kitziger, 1891. Original boards. 4to. 202 pages. 30 cm. First edition. Composed and published by Fred E. Kitziger, organist of the Touro Synagogue. Singerman 3677. Second Volume, a total of four volumes were published (1888-1899) . Contains front advertisement matter containing testimonials, of interest concerning the widespread use of Shire Yehudah throughout the United States. Attractive hand laid and drawn music notation. Bound in original blue boards with pastedown gilt title. Frederick Emil Kitziger (1844?1903) ?A widely known composer of liturgical music for the early Reform movement, Frederick Kitziger served as organist and musical director for multiple New Orleans-area synagogues in the late 19th century. ? Together, the four volumes of Shire Yehudah contain 347 settings for Sabbath and High Holy Day services. Especially in the first two volumes, Kitziger selected prayer texts from the various prayerbooks then in use among Reform and Reform-leaning synagogues in America?chiefly, Isaac Mayer Wise?s Minhag America (1856) , in which Hebrew is prominent, with English and, to a lesser extent, German playing secondary roles; and David Einhorn?s Olath Tamid (the first part also 1856) , which favors English. Kitziger may also have relied for some settings on two other prayerbooks current in American Reform services that are known to have been used in New Orleans as well: Benjamin Szold and Marcus Jastrow?s Avodath Yisrael and another by Adolph Huebsch, who also compiled a hymnal, with text in German, adapted to preexisting tunes. In some instances Kitziger even provided optional settings of prayers according to different versions or inclusions in the various prayerbooks. Obviously, this rendered his music usable by a larger number of congregations than would have been the case had it been modeled on any single prayerbook. ? Kitziger?s own sales records indicate that by the end of the century Shire Yehudah had been purchased by synagogues (presumably Reform) in thirty-seven states. There were apparently sales to Canada, England, and even Germany, although it is difficult to gauge the actual usage abroad. In New Orleans, Kitziger?s music enjoyed regular and extensive use, and much of it found its way into the regular repertoire of major synagogues elsewhere in the South. Certain settings became standard in Reform worship throughout the United States. ? (Milken Archive) Subjects: Synagogue music - Sabbath services. Choruses, Sacred (Mixed voices, 4 parts) with organ - Scores. Synagogue music - United States - New Orleans. OCLC lists 8 copies. Light wear to boards, internally clean and fresh. Good + condition.         Bush Friends in Tasmania Last Series

Native Flowers, Fruits and Insects, drawn from Nature, with Prose Descriptions and Illustrations in Verse - Last Series. Limited edition of 700 signed and numbered copies. Beautiful chromolitographed plates. This forms a sequel to the author's 'Some of my Bush Friends in Tasmania' (1860).Louisa Anne Meredith [née Twamley] (1812-1895) was a writer, illustrator, and naturalist. Born in Birmingham, England, by her early twenties she was already an accomplished illustrator and published poet, at the centre of Birmingham literary, artistic, and Chartist groups. In 1839 she married her cousin, Charles Meredith, and the couple sailed to New South Wales, Australia, intending to spend only a few years in the colony. However, financial failure prevented them returning to England, and instead they relocated to Tasmania. Despite all difficulties, she continued to pursue her artistic literary interests; she combined her narrative, naturalist, and artistic talents to produce beautiful folio celebrations of the natural life of Tasmania. Her last folio, the sumptuous Bush Friends in Tasmania, was published in 1891. At the age of nearly 80 she travelled to England to see it printed. Her valuable record of life and landscape, vivid, accurate, and readable, is also punctuated with elegiac passages on the rapid destruction of that world by the settler invasion. She won literary distinctions, while her painting won awards in international and intercolonial exhibitions, most notably the Melbourne exhibition of 1866. Today, she is considered one of Australia's most loved artists and naturalists. Sources: ODNB; M. Braby's A Flutter of Butterflies (2012)

He practiced medicine but lung disease forced him to retire in 1882, and from that point on he devoted himself to writing and literary research. Bridges' literary work, however, started long before his retirement, his first collection of poems having been published in 1873. As a poet Bridges stands apart from modern English verse yet his work has had great influence in a select circle, by its restraint, purity, precision, and delicacy yet strength of expression.Major Clive Behrens (1871-1935)was the son of Edward Behrens. He married Charlotte Louisa Adela Evelina Rothschild, daughter of Nathan Mayer de Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild and Emma Louisa Rothschild, on 4 October 1899. They lived at Swinton Grange, Malton, Yorkshire, England. He held the offices of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) and Justice of the Peace (J.P.)
