First EditionIn FrenchBound in paper with gilt letteringNicolas Ozanne (1728-1811) was one of the artists in the Ozanne family. He was a French draughtsman, engraver and marine engineer. He was a precocious draughtsman and at the age of ten was working at the Arsenal in Brest. In 1750 he was named drawing-master of the Gardes du Pavillon Amiral et de la Marine in Brest. Entrusting his appointment to his younger brother Pierre Ozanne (1737-1813), he was called in 1751 to Versailles to participate in the publication of the series of drawings and engravings entitled the Voyage du Roi Louis XV au Havre en 1749. He made contact with Parisian artists and the engineers and high functionaries of the Ministere de la Marine. In 1755-6 he had the chance to accompany Joseph Vernet to southern France when the latter painted his views of the Ports of France for Louis XV. He received the appointment of Dessinateur de la Marine in 1756 and published the Marine militaire ou recueil des differents vaisseaux qui servent la guerre (Paris, 1762), a volume of didactic engravings. He was also named maritime instructor to the princes of the royal family and in 1769 became Inginieur Ordinaire de la Marine. He produced numerous drawings, watercolours and engravings, among them two views of Paris (Navigation de barques et chalands sur la Seine devant les Tuileries and Les Chantiers du quai de la Grenouillre, lors de la construction d'un grand navire; both pen and black ink and black wash) now in the Musee Carnavalet, Paris. He is best known for his countless maritime drawings (views of French ports, naval battles, illustrated treatises on naval construction), some published as prints, the originals of others housed for the most part at the Musee de la Marine, Paris, and the Cabinet des Dessins, Musee du Louvre, Paris. Condition: The binding is firm. The outer hinges are starting slightly. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and some rubbing. The front inner hinge is slightly strained and there are amorialbookplates on the pastedowns. Internally the pages are generally clean with some browning to the edges and some mild intermittant spotting which is mostly towards the front of the book. Some of the pages have been reinforced. There is also some mild offsetting from some of the plates, and the previous owner hasfixed some pages from another book on the Ozannes into the text. Overall the condition of the book is very good.         PTERIDOPHORA ALBERTI - The King of Saxony Bird-of-paradise

London 1891 - This splendid hand-colored, folio size lithograph from Richard Bowdler Sharpe’s outstanding work “Birds of Paradise" is in excellent condition, measures 14 ¾” x 22” and magnificently displays the author's scientific skill and attention to detail. Richard Bowdler Sharpe conceived of the idea for his exquisite work ‘Birds of Paradise’, published from 1891-1898, as a supplement to John Gould’s ‘Birds of New Guinea’, published in London from 1875 to 1888, was left incomplete on Gould’s death in 1881. The task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. The birds of paradise were so strikingly beautiful that Sharpe later issued what amounted to a sequel of this work, focusing on the most colorful and exquisite subjects. Sharpe’s Birds of Paradise are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. All of the bird prints in Arader Galleries' inventory have exquisite original color. The vastly superior quality of original color can be clearly differentiated from new color by its smooth and even appearance. The inks have noticeably deeper, richer tones. The difference can also be seen in the lovely surface "sheen" that results from the application of gum arabic when the lithograph was first pulled. The hand coloring of engravings and lithographs reached its zenith in the 19th Century. Works that still display their original color are more rewarding to view, and will better hold their value in the years to come.

AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, UNSIGNED, DESCRIBING ELIZABETH CUSTER'S TRIP TO SCOTLAND].

[N.p. ca. 1891]. - 49pp. Folio. Manuscript on one side of sheet only. Scattered corrections and notations. Light soiling and marginal wear. Very good. In a tan morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. Manuscript written by Elizabeth Custer, in the form of a letter to her sister (but unsigned), describing her trip to Scotland and a stay with Andrew Carnegie at Cluny Castle over the Fourth of July, 1891. After General Custer's dramatic death at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Libbie Custer devoted herself to promoting his legacy as a fallen hero through her books and lectures. In the present manuscript, addressed at the head, "Dear sister," she tells of her visit to Edinburgh and to Cluny Castle where she was the guest of Andrew Carnegie and his wife. She thinks constantly of how much "Autie" - her nickname for her husband - would have enjoyed being there. Her narrative includes ample detail of her trip. At a dinner she notes that Mr. Carnegie ".said beautiful things of Autie, how his country honored him and then some such charming sentiments for me. I was overwhelmed and taken greatly by surprise and I wish that Autie might have listened. He would not have any doubt that Mr. Carnegie believed my fifteen years of endeavor to honor his name were not in vain." Indeed, it was almost entirely due to her efforts that Custer passed into legend rather than infamy for the next century.
