1891. A Tale of the Peninsular War. With Eight Illustrations by John Proctor and Eleven Plans of Battles. London: Griffith Farran & Co., n.d. Original aqua blue cloth pictorially decorated in black, green and red, all page edges gilt. Early edition of Henty's third book for boys -- an edition not specifically cited by Newbolt. This title was originally published in late 1879 (but dated 1880) by "Griffith and Farran". In 1887 and again in 1891 (but both undated), there were editions published by "Griffith, Farran, Okeden & Welsh" -- the latter of which appeared soon thereafter in this glorious pictorial binding. (Newbolt speculates that this binding was issued for that purpose -- to stimulate sales by imitating the handsome Henty bindings then being produced by the rival publishing firm Blackie & Son.) The closest entry in Newbolt to this one is 7.4 -- as it describes this binding (though the cloth is "olive-green"), but with GFO&W on the title page. The Newbolt supplement lists a "7.4-A" which is closer still to this copy -- as that entry has "Griffin Farran & Co." on the title page (as here); however, that entry mentions that although the printer's slug on the final page of text is identical to this copy's ("Gilbert & Rivington, Ld., St. John's House, Clerkenwell Road, London", on that copy it is followed by a date in 1891 whereas this copy bears no such date.~Suffice it to say that this is an early reprint of the first edition, probably from 1891-1892. This is a fine, bright copy -- and is extremely scarce thus. See Newbolt 7.4 and 7.4-A.

        American Football

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1891. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. With 31 photographs of stars from Harvard, Princeton and Yale. In near fine condition with a touch of wear to the extremities. Walter Camp is credited with having revolutionized the game of American football during his years as athletic director and head advisory football coach at Yale in the late 1880s. "Team play was his great objective, and his strategic ability contributed much to the development of its technique. An even greater contribution came from his love of clean sportsmanship… He created a literature of the game in books, magazines, and newspapers… A memorial erected at the Yale Bowl, financed by his admirers in many colleges and schools, bears testimony to the respect and affection in which he was held" (DAB).

        Dame in wallendem Kleid

- GARRISON/M. 1369, NORMAN 2173.

Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Neat repairs to the front hinge and spine. Upper half of front cover darkened. Very Good or better copy of a scarce title. Original printed boards. A scarce collection of eleven speeches prefaced by the comment: "These chance utterances of faith and doubt are printed for a few friends who will care to keep them." Holmes served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court from 1899 until 1902 when he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Theodore Roosevelt, a position he held until his retirement in 1932. Holmes became famous for his liberal interpretations of the United States Constitution and was known as the "Great Dissenter" because of his disagreement with the views of his colleagues on the Court. His lectures on common law at the Lowell Institute in Boston, collected as THE COMMON LAW (1881), are considered a classic of legal writing. Speeches in this book include "Harvard College in the War" and "The Use of Law Schools." This copy with the bookplate of John Wesley Churchill on the front pastedown and his presumed pencil name on the front endpaper. Also on the front pastedown is a small bookplate presenting this book to the Churchill Memorial Room.

        EPIMACHUS ELLIOTI - Black Sicklebill

London 1891 - This splendid hand-colored, folio size lithograph from Richard Bowdler Sharpe’s outstanding work “Birds of Paradise" is in excellent condition, measures 14 ¾” x 22” and magnificently displays the author's scientific skill and attention to detail. Richard Bowdler Sharpe conceived of the idea for his exquisite work ‘Birds of Paradise’, published from 1891-1898, as a supplement to John Gould’s ‘Birds of New Guinea’, published in London from 1875 to 1888, was left incomplete on Gould’s death in 1881. The task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. The birds of paradise were so strikingly beautiful that Sharpe later issued what amounted to a sequel of this work, focusing on the most colorful and exquisite subjects. Sharpe’s Birds of Paradise are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. All of the bird prints in Arader Galleries' inventory have exquisite original color. The vastly superior quality of original color can be clearly differentiated from new color by its smooth and even appearance. The inks have noticeably deeper, richer tones. The difference can also be seen in the lovely surface "sheen" that results from the application of gum arabic when the lithograph was first pulled. The hand coloring of engravings and lithographs reached its zenith in the 19th Century. Works that still display their original color are more rewarding to view, and will better hold their value in the years to come.
