Archive of Artwork, Fanzines and Correspondence (late 1960s - early 1980s)

A substantial archive of work by a young, gifted fantasy artist, who had just begun to appear in the professional magazines and had begun an apprenticeship with a master etcher when he died at a young age. Riley had been a contributor to a number of small fanzines, and editor for a time of two different zines. Included are copies of the zines he edited and others he collected or traded for; original artwork, pasteups and manuscripts for zines he edited; other printed materials and others' original artwork; plus a large body of correspondence related to the zines and to fantasy and science fiction in general. Included in the lot are more than 40 different fanzine titles, many of which do not appear on Locus Magazine's online checklist of "Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Weird Fiction Magazine Index: 1890-2006+." Of these 40+ titles there are over 95 different issues, plus an extensive folder pertaining to artist Kenneth Smith's publication Phantasmagoria, which includes prints, original artwork, PR materials, etc. Some notable highlights include: ¶ two sketchbooks of Riley's artwork; ¶ a complete run (Issues 1-9) of Return to Wonder, one of the zines Riley edited, plus manuscripts and artwork for Return to Wonder #6-9; ¶ correspondence from authors such as Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, L. Sprague De Camp, Philip Jose Farmer, Norman Rockwell, Ben Bova, and others; ¶ a 3-page original typescript by science fiction writer Edmond Hamilton, "Look Forward, Look Back," and a copy of the issue of Return to Wonder that was devoted to Hamilton's work, inscribed by Hamilton and by his wife, science fiction author Leigh Brackett; ¶ a typescript of an original piece by Brackett that was published in RTW about becoming a writer, which mentions her collaboration with William Faulkner on the screenplay of The Big Sleep; ¶ a large file of correspondence from artist Kenneth Smith, including artwork, photographs, an "Autobiography" typescript and interview typescript; ¶ a large file of correspondence from Jim Smith, a writer and college roommate of author Stephen King, with many letters, anecdotes, etc., about King as well as short story and poetry typescripts by Smith, 1975-1982 (i.e., preceding King's commercial breakthroughs); ¶ a large file of correspondence with SF/Fantasy publisher Donald Grant, 1971-1980, including a 33-page corrected typescript of an interview with Riley dated June 26, 1976; ¶ a file of correspondence with the literary agent and Robert E. Howard scholar Glenn Lord re Robert E. Howard, to whom one issue of Return to Wonder was devoted; ¶ an extensive file (approximately 120 items) of correspondence from Michael Taylor, co-author and co-editor of Return to Wonder for part of its duration, including a typescript of a co-authored story and a second, extensively corrected typescript. ¶ This is a significant archive that adds to the body of knowledge of 1970s science fiction fanzines; restores and enhances the limited record of one of the fine artists of the genre; and puts the fanzines of that period into historical context. A more detailed inventory is available on request. .

Autograph manuscript notebook of field experiments, 1890-91, 1891-92, and 1892-93. 130 leaves

1890-93. Raulin, Jules (1836-96). Champ d?expériences. Manuscript notebook. [130]pp., with diagrams and charts. N.p., 1890-93. 214 x 172 mm. Original embossed boards, cloth backstrip, some wear at spine and edges, a few leaves loose. Minor fraying at edges but very good. Scientific notebook written by plant physiologist Jules Raulin, who studied under Pasteur at the École Normale Supérieur and served as Pasteur?s first laboratory assistant at the school. Raulin collaborated with Pasteur on the latter?s investigations of fermentation, oxidation and silkworm disease; he also pursued his own research on the chemical role of minerals in plant nutrition, which led to important advances in agriculture. In 1876 Raulin was appointed professor of chemistry at the Faculté des Sciences in Lyon, and in 1883 he founded the École de Chimie Industrielle (School of Industrial Chemistry), where he spent most of his research time on agronomy and silk production. He was the first to identify the role of zinc in plant nutrition, and his experimental studies of the mold species Aspergillus niger led to the development of the nutritive medium known as Raulin's fluid. The present notebook contains extensive notes and diagrams detailing Raulin?s agricultural researches in the early 1890s, including information on soil chemistry, fertilizers, pest control, etc. At the end of the notebook are several pages devoted to silkworm culture.         Rivers of Grass. An Homage to Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Minerva: The Press at Wimberly Boca Raton, FL: Minerva: The Press at Wimberly. 2012. One of 36 copies, on Yu Kou heavy for the images and text and interleaved with Yu Kou light paper, hand numbered and signed by the artist on the colophon page, "DKrause." Page size: 9-7/8 x 6-7/8 inches; 10pp. Bound: loose as issued housed in envelope made of terracotta Lokta oil paper fastened with tie (combination of terracotta and light orange string and tan leather cord) on lozenge-shaped seed-pod from mahogany tree serves as the fastener, printed letterpress (with a small amount of ink) with the words RIVER OF GRASS and Dorothy Simpson Krause on the lower left front corner. The artist tells us that the envelope, 7 x 10 inches, was selected as the sort of thing an early settler might use to carry a parcel of documents. The seven images (six images plus titlepage) in the book were produced from historic images selected by the artist (credits listed on last page) as well as the artist's own photographs. The photographs of the Everglades were combined with the historic images on the computer and, in each, separated a layer that became the letterpress printing plate. The resulting images have achieved a depth and luminosity not otherwise possible. Ghost-like images reflecting the history of the Everglades combine with the disastrous effects of industrial mismanagement. However, the beauty and vastness of this natural wonder shine through in each image. A laser printer was used to print the under-layer for letterpress. The unprinted margins of the paper were torn away to create a deckle edge. Each sheet was then folded into a folio and then opened flat and a sheet of Yu Kou sheer was used between each folio. The interleaving of lighter- weight sheets somehow, when turning the pages, suggests the movement of the grasses in the Everglades. Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998) was an American journalist, writer, feminist and environmentalist. The worked for "The Miami Herald" and wrote over 100 short stories. It is, however, for her 1947 book, THE EVERLADES: RIVER OF GRASS, that she is most remembered. Compared to Rachel Carson's SILENT SPRING for its impact on the environment, it redefined the national image of the Everglades, pointing out that the entire ecosystem of south Florida was dependent on this natural wonder. Dorothy Simpson Krause's homage to Marjory Douglas, and, therefore, to the Everglades, is a beautiful book with a strong and vital message. See an Image.

It's the best novel written about an actress. A rising young diplomat asks the heroine to give up her career to become his wife and a future ambassadress.Ah how James saw it, the idiocy of any man's thinking that a real actress could even consider balancing love against the stage!".         The Principles of Psychology

New York: Henry Holt. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of William James's masterpiece, the foundational work in establishing psychology as an experimental science. "The Principles of Psychology, which appeared in 1890 after twelve years in the making, is undoubtedly his magnum opus. James was an established Harvard professor and a psychologist and philosopher with an international reputation when Principles was published, but the book alone guaranteed him permanent renown. Since psychology and philosophy were not distinctly separated in 1890, Principles is not only a textbook in experimental psychology but also a landmark contribution to the philosophy of psychology or the philosophy of mind. Discussions of the mind-body relationship and of free will, for instance, accompany explanations of brain functions and of physiological optics. Principles, a massive study that occupies two volumes and twenty-eight chapters, is absorbing for the philosopher and the psychologist alike. Russell called Principles 'the most delightful and readable book on its subject,' a sentiment that many modern thinkers still hold" (Myers, William James: His Life and Thought). First issue, with "Psy-chology" hyphenated in ads facing title pages and error ("notice an, d" on line 19, p.307) in volume I. Provenance: with ownership signature in pencil in each volume on flyleaf of "C. E. St. John", presumably Dr. Charles Edward St. John (1857-1935), noted astronomer and physicist and student of James's at Harvard. New York: Henry Holt, 1890. Octavo, original green cloth. Light rubbing to cloth with abrasion on front board of volume I, remnants of bookplates on endpapers. Text fine. Rare.

4 Autograph Letters, signed, to Grant Allen

n.p. 1890 1897 n.p., 1890-1897. 4 vols., 12mo. 1-1/2 to 4 pp. . Vickery, The Literary Impact of The Golden Bough, pp. 88-89 . A fascinating group of letters whose scope ranges from animism and tree worship to private topics. In one letter, Frazer thanks Allen "for the kind present of 'The Attis'" (Allen's translation of The Attis of Caius Valerius Catullus - with dissertations on the myth of Attis, on the origin of tree-worship -, 1892). Frazer later devoted a section to this subject in Adonis, Attis, Osiris. Studies in the History of Oriental Religion (1906). Elsewhere, Frazer observes, "I should be pleased and proud to make your acquaintance - Whether the profit would be mutual, is, I fear, much more than doubtful. I am no talker and I am afraid you would find me an exceedingly dull fellow. The few ideas I have occur at long intervals, and though, by being stored up and set out together in a book, they make a little show, yet the intervals (which form much the greater part of my life) are times of 'long barren silence' and intellectual vacuity. Not that I am idle at such times, I am reading and studying. But the process of absorbing ideas, however pleasurable to the absorber, is hardly interesting to the bystander. Forgive me for saying so much about myself - It must be very disappointing, after reading a book with interest or even admiration, to find that the writer is a very dull person." The recipient is Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (1848-1899), a prolific Canadian-born writer, reviled in the mid 1890s as "the prophet of the new hedonism." As Vickery notes, discussing The Attis, "the first to make extensive use of Frazer's ideas was Grant Allen - he drew heavily on The Golden Bough, which he calls 'a profound and epoch-making work' - Allen's ideas are of less importance than is the swiftness with which he absorbed and applied the perspectives afforded classical literature by The Golden Bough." Frazer autograph material is quite uncommon, especially with such good content

Carte de visite portrait of Tawhiao, 2nd Maori King, captioned "Tawahio [sic] the Maori King"

New Zealand ca. 1890 [New Zealand, ca. 1890]. (NEW ZEALAND) 3-3/8 x 2-1.2. . Mounted to card. Slight circular abrasion in lower right corner of image . A rare care-de-visite portrait of Tawhiao (c. 1822 - 1894), the 2nd Maori King , who "-left a legacy of religious principles from which his people would draw a future dream for Tainui: the rebirth of a self-sufficient economic base, supported by the strength and stability of the people. Native trees and foods symbolise strength and self-sufficiency in his statement: 'I shall build my own house, the ridge-pole will be of hinau and the supporting posts of mahoe and patate. Those who inhabit that house shall be raised on rengarenga and nurtured on kawariki.' During Tawhiao's exile, Waikato people had reflected and focused on the powerful symbols of the King movement. The man and the vision became united, and part of the traditions and knowledge of the people. The vision is recounted and passed on to later generations at tribal hui, where it continues to be discussed and debated." - www.nzhistory.net.nz

Condensation of Water Vapour in the Presence of Dust-free Air and other Gases

Harrison and Sons London: Harrison and Sons. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of the first description of WIlson's famous cloud chamber, the first type of detector to show the tracks of elementary particles. Cloud chambers "developed from the work of Charles Wilson at the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1890's. He was interested in creating artificial mist, in order to investigate its effect on light, and did so by building a desktop-sized apparatus in which a glass chamber full of moist air was connected to a piston which could be suddenly moved outward, lowering the pressure and causing mist (or cloud) to form in the chamber. The mist droplets grow on tiny particles of dust in the air (cloud condensation nuclei). But, to his surprise, Wilson found that even when all the dust had been removed from the chamber, when the piston was rapidly moved out over a large distance a very thin mist still formed in the chamber. He surmised that the droplets were condensing around electrically charged particles (ions), and proved this, early in 1896, by operating the cloud chamber alongside a source of X-rays (X-rays had only been discovered in the preceding year) and seeing it fill up with condensation as the X-rays passing through it ionized the atoms in the air inside the chamber... Cloud chambers became an essential tool of physics (it was a cloud chamber photograph, for example, that first revealed the existence of the positron) and grew much larger, many being several meters across. They are still used, although superseded for many purposes by other detectors, including bubble chambers and wire chambers." (Gribben, Q is for Quantum). Wilson shared the 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his method of making the paths of electrically charged particles visible by condensation of vapour." Also includes an early paper by Ernest Rutherford, "A Magnetic Detector of Electrical Waves and some of its Applications" (p. 1-24).IN:Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Series A, pp. 265-307. London: Harrison and Sons, 1897. Quarto, original publisher's burgundy blind-stamped cloth. A fine copy.

Original gilt titled maroon cloth, spine slightly sunned, minor wear to extremities. Hutton's first book, "Swordmanship", was published in 1862, and following his retirement from the army in 1865 he "...devoted himself to the practice of modern fencing... His chief work, published in 1889, was devoted to the sabre - Cold Steel (a title sometimes transferred by his friends from the book to the writer)... Under Hutton's instruction the school of arms of the London rifle brigade reached a high level of all-round swordsmanship... From 1895 until his death Hutton was first president of the Amateur Fencing Association, originally the fencing branch of the Amateur Gymnastic Association, the earliest attempt at organising British fencing. He promoted the beginning of national championships for men from 1898 and for women from 1907. When English fencers first participated in the international cup (at Paris in 1903), he was on the jury. In 1909 he became fencing delegate to the British Olympic Council" (ODNB).
