        Das Kapital / Buch One

Hamburg: Verlag Von Otto Meissner, 1890 Hamburg: Verlag von Otto Meissner, 1890. Two Forewords by Marx himself, two more Forewords by Friedrich Engels. Entire text in German. Fourth Edition. Octavo, [XXXII] 739 pp. Half russet morocco leather with brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Light peripheral wear; dedication page separated, some paper repair to last page of text at lower right corner (not affecting text), occasional light pencil annotations in German, else better than Very Good. Please see scans. A scarce early Meissner edition of Book One of Karl Marx's seminal political/economic treatise, Das Kapital, in the original German, as he wrote it. Here was first propounded, in depth, the notion that a capitalist's profit from materials and machinery is ultimately impossible, and thus must be taken from workers through forced labor beyond the measure of compensation offered for that labor. Regardless of how much merit Marx's views in the end did or did not contain, there is no doubting the depth of thought and work that went into the clear expression those views, nor the impact that the publication of Das Kapital has had on this planet since. A sturdy, handsome, even elegant binding after the German fashion of the time. With two forewords by Friedrich Engels, in addition to two of Marx's own, running to about thirty pages in total. L-39n

On Early Law and Custom; New Edition, 1890; Prize Binding.

1890 - Maine, Sir Henry Sumner [1822-1888]. On Early Law and Custom. London: John Murray, 1890. 402 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary signed morocco binding (by J. Low), all edges gilt, gilt spine with raised bands, gilt heraldic device of the Law Society of the United Kingdom to front board, presentation bookplate to front free endpaper. Light rubbing to extremities, negligible light fading to spine, boards slightly bowed, crack to text block between front free endpaper and following leaf. Interior notably fresh. * "New Edition." First published in 1883 as, Dissertations on Early Law and Custom. Like the equally distinguished Village Communities in the East and the West (1871) and the Early History of Institutions (1875), this treatise considers aspects of traditional societies to establish and illustrate the normal process of development in legal and political ideas, most notably freedom of contract. "Maine indicates the place in the development of a legal system of such agencies as legal fictions and equity. He explains the history of the concept of a law of nature; and in his account of the contrast between primitive and modern society--between the place which the law of persons occupies in primitive and modern law--he comes to the famous conclusion that the government of progressive societies has been from status to contract.": Holdsworth, History of English Law XV: 363-4.         In Darkest Africa

London, Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington Limited,, 1890. or, The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria. 2 volumes, demy quarto. Original dark brown half morocco, japon on bevelled boards with the title, flag of Emin Pasha and Stanley's signature to the upper boards gilt, title gilt to spines, dog-tooth roll gilt to the spine and corner edges, top edges gilt, others uncut, dark brown silk page-markers still intact, and in place. Titles printed in red and black, photogravure portrait frontispiece of Stanley on India paper mounted, printed by Lemercier from a photograph by Walery, similar Lemercier-printed frontispiece to volume II, and 44 plates, 6 of them etchings printed in sepia, signed in pencil by G. Montbard, the rest printed on India paper and mounted, 4 maps, 3 of them folding, the 2 large area maps linen-backed, 1 folding printed table, and 103 illustrations in the text, 3 of them full-page. The japon a little discoloured and slightly rubbed as often, but the morocco solid, clean and unchipped, joints barely creased, tan-burn from the turn-ins, occasional foxing verso of the mounting sheets, plates unaffected, and the etchings showing some slight marginal discolouration, but overall a very superior copy of a set which while handomely presented, is often encountered somewhat tired and unprepossessing. First edition, edition de luxe. Number 195 of 250 copies signed by Stanley. Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha, who proved singularly resistant to being "rescued", his abandonment of his own rear column and his wider motives for his mission have all come under suspicion then and since, but the book remains a classic of African exploration. In the course of the journey Stanley met Roger Casement, then in service on the Congo, discovered the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. Translations of In Darkest Africa appeared quickly in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch while sales of the English trade editions reached 150,000 copies.

        Lover or Friend?

Publisher's original design gray printed endpapers. Spines very slightly cocked, otherwise fine.OCLC/KVK record only nine copies of the first edition in library holdings worldwide. ABPC has no auction records for any edition of Lover Or Friend? as far back into the past as 1923.A prime example of "safe fiction" for girls of the 19th century, which is to say highly conservative with an emphasis on the domestic duties of women, which take precedence over all other considerations and responsibilities.A very popular novelist in her time but now long forgotten, Rosa Nouchette Carey's ambition was "to try to do good and not harm by my works, and to write books which any mother can give a girl to read" (as cited by Black, Notable Women Authors). As such, the question Lover or Friend? - a suggestive title suggesting more than it delivers - aims at the latter, safely navigating the young female reader away from potential indelicacies to rest ashore a pure land not without its own difficulties, and it is there that the book still speaks to women stepping into the modern world yet fettered to the old, and frustrated. Juggling the roles of wife, mother, and working woman remains as much a daily struggle for women in 2011 as it was in 1890, though Carey's answer, concentrate on the domestic front, retreat from the other, may rankle 21st century feminists.Carey practiced what she preached. Though she enjoyed writing, she kept it a friend, not a lover."I do not think that I have known any author who has made her writing - the real work of her life - so secondary a matter as has Rosa Carey. She has so consistently lived her religion, so to speak, that family duty and devotion to its many members have always come first" (Helen Marion Burnside, as cited by Black)."Rosa Nouchette Carey (1840–1909), novelist, was born at Stratford-le-Bow, London, on 24 September 1840... As a child she told stories to her younger sister, and in this way created the plot of her first novel, Nellie's Memories (1868). The publisher's advertisements suggest that it sold over 52,000 copies. It was followed by many other novels, marked by pious tone, domestic subject matter, and a large number of rather unmemorable characters, which were staples of the market in safe fiction for girls during the last third of the nineteenth century..."Yet, gushing and unpretending as her work is, she does depict the frustrations of such women with some sympathy, exploring the pains of living up to high ideals and the psychic cost of self-abnegation..."Carey's literary career got going... in her late twenties. After the death of her mother in 1870 Carey and her remaining unmarried sister went to keep house for a widowed brother and look after his children; after the sister married and went to live in Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland (which provided a setting for some of Carey's fiction), the brother died and Carey was left in charge of the children. "As well as writing thirty-three three-volume novels, she was on the staff of the Girls' Own Paper, for which she wrote eight serials. She does not seem to have moved in literary circles, although she was a close friend of the novelist Ellen Wood (Mrs Henry Wood). The poet Helen Marion Burnside, who also worked for the Girls' Own Paper, lived with her from about 1875, and edited The Rosa Nouchette Carey Birthday Book (1901). When Carey's sister was widowed she returned to keep house for the two authors. Rosa Carey died of lung cancer at her home, Sandilands, Keswick Road, Putney, London, on 19 July 1909" (Oxford DNB)

        Fete Foraine

      A. Capendu, Paris - Scarce juvenile title celebrating French carnival. N.d., circa 1890. Small folio-sized, 31 by 25 cm. 16 pp., including wraps. Vivid chromolithographs, whose artful juxtapositions aid in transporting us back to the nineteenth century carnival and to see the kinetic energy and color of such occasions through a child's eyes. Here is the wonderment without the grime and sordidness that was surely the underside of peripatetic productions. The illustrations bring to life "les Animaux Savants", the wild animals, the organ grinder, the souvenir vendors, Punch and Judy, the minstrel band, the jugglers, the balancing acts, Indianqs, the monkeys, balloons, and then such innocent fun as cycling. No copies located on OCLC. Light soling scattered. Minor roughness by the spine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
